Welcome Dear Friends, Welcome to the 41st season of Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival, Nevada’s largest professional, non-profit-theater and provider of educational outreach programming! Forty-one years of Shakespeare at Lake Tahoe is a remarkable achievement made possible by the visionary founders and leaders of this company and supported by the extraordinary generosity of this community, our board of directors, staff, volunteers, and the many, many artists who have created hundreds of evenings of magic under the stars. Our work continues year-round through our educational outreach programming. Our in-school residency program InterACT brings Shakespeare alive in the classroom for approximately 3,000 students each year with interactive workshops. The D. G. Menchetti Young Shakespeare Program has entertained and educated over 50,000 young people for free, since it began in 2002. Welcome to our newest partner, David Walley’s Resort, for helping to underwrite the D.G. Menchetti Young Shakespeare Program. Synopsis
and still loves him, even though he loves Hermia. Hoping to regain his love, Helena tells Demetrius of the elopement that Hermia and Lysander have planned. At the appointed time, Demetrius stalks into the woods after Lysander and Hermia. Helena follows behind him. In these same woods are a band of fairies, including Oberon, the fairy king, and Titania, his queen and a group of Athenian craftsmen, rehearsing a play that they hope to perform for the duke and his bride. Oberon and Titania are at odds over the custody of a young changeling boy. Seeking revenge, Oberon sends his servant, Puck, to acquire a magical flower, the juice of which makes a person
Theseus is preparing for his marriage to Hippolyta and commissions Philostrate to find suitable amusements for the occasion. Egeus marches into Theseus’s court with his daughter, Hermia, and two young men, Demetrius and Lysander. Egeus wishes Hermia to marry Demetrius (who loves Hermia), but Hermia is in love with Lysander and refuses. Theseus gives Hermia until his wedding to make her decision. Hermia and Lysander plan to escape Athens the following night and marry. They make their intentions known to Hermia’s friend Helena, who was once engaged to Demetrius 10

fall in love with the first thing they see upon waking. Puck obtains the flower, and Oberon tells him of his plan to use it on the sleeping Titania. Having seen Demetrius act cruelly toward Helena, he orders Puck to spread some of the juice on the eyelids of the young Athenian man. Puck encounters Lysander and Hermia and mistakenly applies the juice to Lysander’s eyes. Lysander happens to see Helena upon awaking and falls deeply in love with her, abandoning Hermia. Confusion abounds as the four lovers dote, fight, and fall asleep with a little help from Puck. When Titania wakes, she falls in love with Bottom whose head Puck has mockingly transformed
into that of a donkey and while she is under this spell, Oberon obtains the changeling boy. Theseus and Hippolyta discover the sleeping lovers in the forest and take them back to Athens to be married—Demetrius now loves Helena, and Lysander now loves Hermia. After the group wedding, the lovers watch Bottom and his fellow craftsmen perform their play, a fumbling, hilarious version of the story of Pyramus and Thisbe. All is well, and the lovers head off to bed. Only Puck remains, to ask the audience for its forgiveness and approval and to urge us to remember the play as though it had all been a dream.

Director’s Note While searching for an approach to A Midsummer Night’s Dream I was drawn, rather whimsically, to the music of the “British Invasion” and the idea of setting the play in the mid-1960s. I began to imagine a production of Shakespeare’s “Dream” set to early 60’s pop music, with the “Mechanicals” (Bottom, Flute, Quince & Co.) as a sort of “Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.” London in the 1960s was reported by music critic Ian MacDonald to be, “a city in glorious thrall to a thriving youth culture…the place to
which we must all look to learn how to act, think and dress.” But London’s first incarnation as the city that “swings” might well have been at the turn of the 16th century, the final decade of the Elizabethan period, just about the time that the city’s greatest pop star, William Shakespeare, penned A Midsummer Night’s Dream. While the young in 1590 were hardly “classless,” it was a period of great upward mobility, with a vibrant global economy spurred on by expansionism in the New World. London was the center of government, commerce and the arts. Shakespeare’s London was also

the progenitor of all “youth cultures” to follow. While I have, occasionally, embraced contemporary settings for the Shakespeare plays in my work, I am aware that this approach can be dangerously reductive, leading the director into the role of literary lion tamer, torturing the text into submission in order to keep it in the cage of comparison. The goal, and only real justification, for this production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream is to create a look and rhythm that will engage the audience in the text and heighten our awareness of what is timeless in the play.

The actions of the young lovers seem particularly suited to the rhythms and sentiment of the early 60’s love songs; the fairy world of Oberon and Titania, with their magical “flowerpower,” finds a clear equivalent in the spiritual movement inspired by celebrities pilgrimages to India. The lovers’ journey to the woods might be viewed, in this context, as a “consciousness-raising trip.” Whether or not we have achieved our goal will only be discovered in performance. Acting Company Joe Atack Snout / Wall / Pease Blossom Joe is really excited to be returning to the acting company for his 4th season on the Mainstage and to be working on his 7th production of D.G. Menchetti Young Shakespeare Program. Shakespeare credits include Demetrius and Quince in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Sea Captain/ Priest in Twelfth Night, Panthino/ Outlaw in The Two Gentlemen of Verona, the title role in Macbeth, Lord Tyrell in Richard III, Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing and Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet. Joe is also Director of Education at LTSF planning and directing all of LTSF’s fantastic education programs including D.G. Menchetti Young Shakespeare, InterACT (in-school residency program) and Midsummer Camps.

Stitch has done a bunch of educational theater tours and a fair amount of radio, television and film. Stitch loves Lake Tahoe.

Wesley Gaines McNair Snug / Lion / Mustard Seed This is Wesley’s first production with Lake Tahoe! He has spent the past three years pursuing a BFA in Theater Performance at UNR, with university roles including: Player King/Bernardo in Hamlet in Original Pronunciation, Bottom in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Home Spirit in the devised work I Am the Pilot In Command. Bottom / Pyramus Shad Willingham is an actor, director and playwright. Upon receiving his MFA from University of Washington, Shad joined the Oregon Shakespeare Festival performing in almost 20 productions. In 2008 Shad accepted a teaching position at Tulane University. While there Shad appeared in numerous plays: The 39 Steps, The Seafarer, South Pacific and Julius Caesar, among them. Shad acts & directs regularly. Recently directing Twelfth Night for New Orleans Shakespeare Festival and appearing in Noises Off with Idaho Shakespeare Festival. Shad recently wrote, directed and starred in the world premiere of his play Ham for the Holidays. This February Shad directed Romeo and Juliet for California State University, Northridge where is currently a professor of acting.

Helene Peterson Choreographer Helene returns to LTSF for a third year. She was the choreographer for 2010’s The
Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) and 2011’s Twelfth Night. Nineteen seasons of choreography for the Idaho Shakespeare Festival include: A Christmas Carol, The Tempest, Cymbeline, Much Ado About Nothing, You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown, The Fantasticks, I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change, and Romeo and Juliet. Helene holds a MFA in dance from New York University, Tisch School of the Arts. She was awarded a Fellowship from the Idaho Commission on the Arts for Artistic Excellence in 2006.
Star Moxley Costume Designer A resident designer with Idaho Shakespeare Festival for 22 seasons her designs include Macbeth, Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, Twelfth Night, As You Like It, Henry V, The Three Musketeers, The Winter’s Tale, She Stoops to Conquer, Arms and the Man, Waiting for Godot, Quilters, and Much Ado About Nothing. She also designs for Idaho Theater for Youth, Boise Contemporary Theater and Great Lakes Theater. Esther happily splits her year between Boise, ID and her home in Cleveland, OH with her amazingly talented and supportive husband, Richard.

Prior to his work in Nevada, Idaho and Ohio, he served as artistic director of Sierra Repertory Theatre in Sonora, California. He has worked with such companies as The Old Globe, La Jolla Playhouse, the Milwaukee and Missouri Repertory Theaters, Actor’s Theatre of Phoenix, and the Los Angeles Shakespeare Festival. Charlie has garnered significant awards for artistic leadership in Boise and Cleveland. Charlie shares his life with an incredibly supportive family, his wife Lidia and 18-yearold daughter, Alexa.
Bob Taylor Executive Director Bob Taylor became Executive Director of Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival in June 2010. In addition to his duties in Tahoe, he remains the Executive Director of Great Lakes Theater in Cleveland—a position he has held since 2003. He manages a number of areas including finance, development, human resources, planning, and general administration.
Bob is a fellow of the 2013 Chief Executive Program, a threeyear program for 100 leaders in the US and abroad that are working together to address the competitive challenges, financial health and continued relevance of the arts. Bob is an adjunct faculty member at Baldwin Wallace University, and regularly is asked to speak on career opportunities in theater management. He serves in an advisory capacity to the Beck Center for the Arts, a community arts organization in Lakewood, Ohio.

Outreach M i ds u m m e r C a m p A Summer Theater Series for Students Ages 4-16 Our Midsummer Camp immerses students in fun, interactive and educational theater-based activities. The series of weeklong summer theater camps affords students a unique opportunity to work with and learn from Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival’s professional actors/ teaching artists in a safe and supportive environment. Featuring exciting activities for the young actor in your family, our Midsummer Camp introduces students to the extraordinary works of William Shakespeare, provides a place for participants to sing and dance their hearts out and enables each attendee to develop their talents. From July 29 – August 8th the D.G. Menchetti Young Shakespeare Program presents an interactive, exciting interpretation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, created with the young audience member in mind. This production is set in the late 1880’s with fairies, a circus and young love entangled by mischievous magic. With great costumes, music, audience interaction, and of course some of Shakespeare’s most hilarious characters, it promises to be fun for the whole family! This production is directed by Festival Director of Education, Joe Atack, and features a fabulous cast of professional actors and young aspiring actors training and learning from their castmates.
