We’ve got a few ideas for you...
This year I had a close-up look at Lakes Region weddings. I assigned myself a new task of helping with the weddings at my church. (I have been a member of the Gilford Community Church in Gilford village for many years.) Recently, the church undertook a building expansion. Over the months since the construction was completed, many wedding ceremonies have taken place. Due to the increased amount of ceremonies, my husband and I were asked to help with weddings at the church and we were happy to step up. It’s meant busy Saturdays for most of this past summer and fall, but it was worth it to help in the moments before each bride took a deep breath, wiped away a few tears of emotion and walked down the aisle. It gave me an up-close view of the people that weddings are all about: the family and the happy couple. We dealt with butterfly cages and videos of the bride and groom as they grew up and one tearful bride who needed a place to store her wedding cake before the reception. (The church was happy to let her store it in their oversized refrigerator.) At Lakes Region Bride magazine, I look at wedding photos all year long and I talk to many wedding professionals. I sometimes get so caught up in the business of weddings that I forget it’s all about the bride and groom and the families and friends who nurture the couple over the months of planning.

With that in mind, I decided Lakes Region Bride this year would focus big time on wonderful wedding ideas. So, we’ve given you a variety of wedding stories, from a casual and stylish Castle in the Clouds ceremony and celebration to a stunning family-compound wedding to an actual wedding that took place at our church with a gorgeous autumn reception that followed at Waukewan Golf Club. For fun we’ve added some unusual and gorgeous wedding photos that offer everything from a beautiful, very unique bride to a vintage shoot to a slick cocktail hour photo gallery. We’re all about ideas that help the bride and groom get the best wedding possible. We’d like to thank all the couples we worked with at our church this year; they allowed us to watch over their wedding flowers, pin on boutonnieres, hand out programs and support moms and dads who shed a few bittersweet tears as daughters and sons prepared to marry. Here’s to happy wedding planning…and a wonderful, romantic life ahead.

Tying a Highboy... Many weddings feature these tall highboy “tables.” They make a bold statement and look gorgeous. We have just one pet peeve: often they are tied sloppily. Brent & Laura ~ A Castle Romance, July 9, 2011 (Eye Sugar Photography)
Brent (a manager at Trader Joe’s) and Laura (a project estimator for DPR Construction) met through college pals; Laura is a graduate of Cornell and in 2006, she attended a Laguna Beach, CA get-together of friends from her college days. At the party she met a “mystery” friend of a mutual pal. Sparks flew and the couple dated for five years (10 months of which went into wedding planning after the engagement.) The couple were living (and still reside) in CA but Laura is originally from Maine. They wanted a rustic wedding, but when Laura showed Brent photos of Castle in the Clouds, his eyes lit up and he said, “That’s it!” With the help of family and friends, the wedding came together at a castle on the other side of the country. Laura wanted a simple outdoor wedding with a natural feel. This was accomplished with a birch tree arbor made by a family friend (the couple were married under the arbor on the lawn outside the Castle). Bagpiper Kirk Brunson played at the ceremony, adding a unique musical sound. Birch tree lantern posts and metal lantern hangers lit the patio reception at the Castle Carriage House. Centerpiece table numbers were painted by Laura’s young cousins; centerpiece barn board boxes were made by Laura’s dad. Wedding favors were placed in Laura’s great-grandfather’s wheelbarrow with a weeping cherry tree in the middle. After-dinner mint favors were put together by a cousin and each had a photo of Brent and Laura. Dandelion Florist of Wolfeboro designed centerpiece florals with local plants and mosses. A very manageable guest list of 80 people danced and dined on the patio at the Castle Carriage House with incredible views of the Lakes Region’s mountains and the lake far below. Laura’s mother’s famous Whoopie Pie recipe was used for the “pie” dessert that was displayed on a tiered shelf made by Laura’s father using his grandfather’s old ladder. Laura’s stylish gown was by Vera Wang; maids’ dresses were chosen to be comfortable, to reflect each woman’s individual style...and be something they can wear again. This is smart fashion recycling! Jordan and David - Rustic Fall Celebration October 4, 2011

Skiing played largely into the engagement of Jordan and David. Indeed, the couple’s first date at was Cannon Mt. in NH in 2008. A few years later, on January 2, 2010 to be exact, Jordan and David were skiing with family at Gunstock in Gilford. Jordan recalls, “Dave and I were on a trail by ourselves when he stopped to change his gloves. I was looking into the woods and when I turned around he was kneeling in the snow with my ring! It was really sweet - it was quiet and there was a light snow falling. When we got down to the chair lift, his sister asked where we had been and she was the first to find out that we were engaged. She announced to everyone waiting for the lift that her brother was getting married!” Engaged for 22 months, the couple went into wedding planning mode. Colors were navy with shades of orange, wheat and ivory. The rustic/chic theme

utilized the barn at Waukewan Golf Club. An apple theme with green apples was added to the centerpieces, and candy apples were favors and reception tables were named after native NH apples.
Super organized Jordan held it all together and the couple did a lot of the planning. They created their own ceremony programs, table and place cards. Jordan’s in-laws built flower boxes that held the centerpieces. Burlap covered screens displayed pictures of the couple. “We had three screens: one each for Dave and me with pictures our parents selected of us growing up. And the third screen had pictures of Dave and me together from the time we met. I also added personal

Samantha and Bryan - Planned to Perfection (Lisa Smith Photography)

Persistence pays off. It surely did for Samantha, a wedding planner in Georgia (originally from NH with parents who still live in the Lakes Region). Samantha was so interested in fitness that she quit her job as an event planner and went to work for a gym in Boston. That is where she first saw Bryan, who also worked at the gym. She invited him to her weekly taco night at her apartment; he said no. In turn, he invited her out, and she declined. With some persistence, a first date was arranged. From there, the romance was on. Bryan popped the question in Samantha’s parent’s backyard (where the wedding reception would take place) in front of a group of family. The wedding was scheduled for June 11, 2011. Samantha and Bryan were working and living in Georgia by then; it meant planning the wedding long distance. Once again, persistence to have the wedding with their unique vision paid off. Samantha recalls, “My vision for the wedding was classic New England elegance with little eclectic touches. I didn’t want the wedding to look too matchy, matchy. As an event planner, that’s my biggest pet peeve when everything is cookie cutter and coordinates perfectly. I wanted to mix up colors, styles and textures. There were no set colors, rather a color palette I worked from, including soft pink, peach, Blush, ivory and a bit of gold.” Samantha’s gown was simple yet absolutely gorgeous. “I found my gown at Priscilla of Boston. The dress was Ivory Taffeta in the style Maeve – part of their Vineyard Collection. I couldn’t resist that big bow! Very preppy! I had searched and searched, and searched some more for the perfect statement piece necklace. Everything I came across was very ‘blingy’ but I wanted something a little more understated yet still beautiful and statement making. My mother and I created the twisted necklace by combining several necklaces we found in various stores. They can be worn together or as I wore it on my wedding day. I wear them all the time in my everyday wardrobe. It’s nice because every time I put it on it reminds me of our special day.” Touches that made the wedding unique and memorable included a Cookie Bar - Samantha picked the cookie flavors and her aunt, cousin and sister helped with the baking. With three cookies per guest, they baked 525 cookies...and there wasn’t one left at the end of the reception. Cookie bag labels were created and cut out and hand glued by Samantha. The table number cards for guests were made using a template and shrunk down to fit the small hooks and displayed with names on each one. Samantha created the number with the pink stripe background and found great frames at Ikea. The wonderful, rustic signs in the yard presented a challenge. Samantha recalls, “You should have seen me the day before the wedding on my hands and knees in the garage painting them! I literally used the paint we had left in the garage. My stepfather cut the post and signs for me and prepped them in white.” Persistence helped Samantha and Bryan find a dream reception location and as it turned out, they did not need to look further cont. on pg. 50

Let’s get right to it: you want to know what’s up with gowns this year before you begin shopping for your dream dress. Here’s what you will be seeing and what you should know this year. “We are seeing traditional ball gowns with an updated look and feel. It’s belts, belts, belts!” says Helen Dionne, owner of A Day to Remember Bridal Boutique in Concord, NH. “Belts are a great way to take a simple gown and turn it into an extraordinary gown. Designers have really outdone themselves creating individual masterpieces with some of these belts. The royal wedding did have an impact on bridal styles. Most manufacturers have designed a gown or two with sleeves and I’ve actually had calls for gowns with sleeves since Kate Middleton got married.” Caitlin Baldwin, owner of Inspirations Bridal & Formal Wear in North Conway says floral accents and ruffles are big at her shop right now. “Bright color accents have become less popular than in the past,” she says. When asked what NH brides are looking for, she adds, “NH brides tend to be a little safer in their style trends and go towards more classic and traditional
dresses. Also, we have seen quite a few brides loving fun, flirty and flared gowns.” Helen of A Day to Remember comments that a lot fewer gowns have “pick up tucks” and the mermaid style has edged back into the limelight. “In NH, we continue to see brides who like ‘fit and flare’ styling, although I believe that as the bridal magazines find their way to the store shelves, our NH brides will be looking for those styles.” Lace has remained popular and taken on different forms, according to Caitlin of Inspirations Bridal. “There are many different patterns now, so we are not dealing with ‘grandma’s lace dress’ anymore. Soft organza is popular vs. chiffon; organza creates a full skirt without being bulky.” “I saw a lot of lace at Market this year,” explains Helen. “Different designers use multiple fabrics. What I can tell you for sure is that with the labor shortage in China forcing the factories to pay higher wages to keep workers, the increased cost of textiles worldwide and the higher distribution costs mean that gown prices have gone up significantly.” For headpieces and veils, Helen says feather plumes and flowers are seen as accessories in 2012. My birdcage veil was created using a Linens by divine brooch from my great inspirations!; flowers Lakes photo: Floral Susan grandmother and I Region Studio Brown created the peacock feather hair accessories for my bridesmaids. I also changed into my cowboy boots for a little Texas flair! (The couple resides in that state.) Jordan says, “Living in Texas and having to plan from afar was difficult. I did a lot of research online. My mom mailed me all the information she gathered at bridal expos, so I had a lot of information for local vendors. I had lots of help from my mom and aunt. “Fortunately, we were pretty lucky and didn’t have any major problems. It was raining on the wedding day, but that was out of our control. I do really love how the pictures came out even with the rain.” The wedding ceremony took place at the Gilford Community Church. The wedding party was transported to the reception at Waukewan Golf Club via Molly the Trolley. The menu for the wedding dinner cocktail hour consisted of seasonal fruits and veggies, domestic cheese and crackers and Bruschetta. The entree buffet included mixed green salad and rolls, Broccoli Chicken Penne Pasta with wine sauce, Prime Rib, roasted butternut squash with baked Turkish apricots and roasted Red Bliss potatoes with rosemary. Dessert was a tiered wedding cake from Hemlocks Confections and apple crisp, in keeping with the fall theme. Jordan’s advice to those planning a wedding: “Do your best to stick to a budget! In the midst of planning, it seems like every detail is necessary and you want it to be perfect. Make a decision and move on. Your guests won’t know about what the options were. I would also advise creating a ‘Bridal Emergency Kit.’ You never know what might happen. The one thing I needed (a mini sewing kit) was one of the few things I thought I could pass on.”

Working with a Justice of the Peace by Sheila Oranch Joining together with your beloved in a public ceremony is one of the most meaningful acts in your life. Whether you are planning an intimate moment with just a few witnesses, or a grand affair, your ceremony will be remembered for the rest of your life. An experienced Justice of the Peace (JP) can help you avoid some of the stress in planning your wedding. Here are some tips to make it easier: Plan ahead. Ask town clerks near where you want to have your ceremony if they can suggest local JPs. (Most JPs will charge extra for travel.) Talk with a few JPs about their availability, fees and how they work. If you have not chosen the ceremony site, they may have suggestions. Plan ahead so you can get the date you want. Communicate. Talk to each other and make sure you both have the same vision for the ceremony and whether you want personalized wedding vows. Decide whether you want to write one vow that you will both say, or whether you want to say different things. Coordinate with your JP. Work with your JP to include everything that is important to you. Do you want your ceremony to be traditional or modern? Will someone give you away or do you give yourselves? Will you exchange rings? Do you want to light a unity candle? Make your day, your way. Write your vows. Once you have decided on the style of your ceremony, think about how to express your feelings. What are some of the great things about your fiancé? What are some of your favorite memories together? What does marriage mean to you? Your JP will fit the vows into the order of the ceremony. Practice makes perfect. Read what you’ve written out loud to a friend or family member and keep the wording natural. Give a copy to your officiant to have handy for you, and so it can be added into your ceremony. A printed copy of the whole ceremony will make a lovely keepsake. The more ideas and planning you share with your JP, the easier it will be to have a relaxed ceremony and a solid beginning to a lifelong, harmonious relationship. “When it comes to shape of the cake,” says Lashunda Allen, “couples are going with their own unique themes... whether it’s Legos, Pez or a puzzle or zombie theme, which requires different fun shapes to recreate the feel of the theme. Right now tiers of varying heights seems to be a big trend.” What are brides using for cake toppers? Lashunda continues, “Esty (the website) has been big this past year as a source for finding special toppers. A great way to personalize a wedding is to have a topper made. Companies that offer custom, handmade keepsake wedding cake toppers will most definitely grow even more this year. Couples like to be unique and capture their union together with a topper they can keep forever.”

“Cake toppers are a funny business and most often seem to be the cause for great concern and debate,” adds Greg Worthen. “I am starting to see a trend toward no topper at all, although flowers, whether fresh or sugar, are still the most common choice. A topper is a great way to personalize the cake and we have made things from sugar lizards to Mario and Princess Peach to truly personalize the cake. The strangest topper I had was probably a bonsai tree.” When asked what advice he would give couples shopping for a wedding cake, Greg says, “It is probably best to know there are many bakers available and we each have our specific strengths and weaknesses. A wedding cake is most likely the single most expensive food item the couple will ever purchase and they should feel that the baker can prepare what they are looking for. I personally take no offense when not chosen to prepare a cake over another baker, as it is such an important event for the couple.” Lashunda comments, “I believe it’s really unfair to ask a cake designer to copy a design from a magazine or from another cake designer’s website. Honestly, a copy is never the same as the original. Please bring your cake designer various photos for inspiration and challenge the baker to create a unique wedding cake just for you. “If brides are working with a budget, they can still get a fantastic cake. As long as the design of the cake is realistic and the expectations of the bride are in check, she will be able to get a bolder statement wedding cake without the labor intensive detail cost.”

Gimme Shelter...Tent Tips
Many couples have their hearts set on an outdoor tented reception for a summer or fall wedding. It’s a popular trend; if you choose a tented reception, there are things you must think about before and during the tent rental process. The following information will help as you shop for a tent and plan your tented event. 1. Make sure to have a tent installation expert visit the site where you want to put the tent. The expert can thoroughly evaluate the grounds. This is important; the average person may choose a site they love but have no idea about electrical lines, septic, etc. In getting an estimate prior to a site visit, be aware that the price may change after the visit, depending on the condition of the site. 2. You should be prepared to pay a deposit upon signing a contract for the tent rental. 3. Discuss with the tent company what the schedule will be for the site survey. 4. There are lots of tent styles and sizes - marquee, pole, century, saddle span, Top Tent, etc. A good rental company can guide you to the correct tent for your particular site. (There are special considerations for some types of tents, such as a pole tent will need more room for roping and staking.) Walk the site with the expert/tent rental installer. You should point out any known underground utilities such as electric, water, sprinkler, telephone, communication, cable, cont. on pg. 55

Planning your wedding means a chance to show your personal style; however, don’t leave it til the last minute! Here are some tips on when to start planning. TWELVE – EIGHTEEN MONTHS BEFORE: • Buy a wedding planning notebook or organizer and slip Lakes Region Bride into the pages for easy reference. • Plan the overall style of the wedding/color scheme. Include your parents and future in-law in your plans. • Retaining a wedding-planning professional? Interview planners and make your final choice. • Choose wedding date and make appointment with clergy who you wish to perform the ceremony. Email save-the-date cards. This allows key guests plenty of notice to make travel plans. • If you have friends, co-workers or relatives who were recently married, talk with them for tips and advice. • Book a reception facility. (On a tight budget? Consider off-season dates for possible discounts.) • Discuss how much to spend on your wedding. Budgeting is very important! • Shop for your wedding rings. • Make a wedding guest list after consulting with your family and the groom’s family. EIGHT – TWELVE MONTHS BEFORE: • Shop for and order your wedding gown and veil. If wearing an heirloom gown, have it cleaned/altered. • Choose wedding attendants, shop with them for dresses, get measurements from attendants living far away. • Add cell phone numbers/email addresses of all wedding party members to your address/phone book. • Register for china, silver, etc. • Set up appointments to meet with caterers, photographers, cake bakers, florists, musicians/DJs, videographers. EIGHT MONTHS BEFORE: • Finalize guest list. • Order invitations, announcements and thank-you notes. Ask that envelopes be delivered right away so you can begin addressing them. Invitations should be mailed about four weeks before the wedding. • Decide on and sign contracts with photographer, band or DJ, limo service, reception facility, caterer, cake baker. • Decide on wedding color scheme, discuss with your mother and groom’s mother, so they can shop for their dresses. • Choose florist. Discuss color scheme with florist so flowers can be ordered to match. • Groom and ushers should shop for tuxedos. • Discuss ceremony music.
• Reserve any needed rental supplies for the ceremony and/or reception. • With fiance, choose honeymoon location and check for passports and any necessary inoculations. SIX MONTHS BEFORE: • Reserve hotel rooms for out-of-town guests. • Decide where all wedding attendants will be staying. THREE MONTHS BEFORE: • Confirm delivery and alteration dates with bridal shop for your dress and attendants’ dresses. Choose accessories. • Schedule the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner. TWO MONTHS BEFORE: • Visit with your officiant to go over your vows and music. • Make appointment with hair stylist/manicurist for two weeks before wedding. Schedule hair appointment for wedding day, if desired. Check with bridesmaids and schedule hair appointments for those who wish it for the day of the wedding. • Choose gifts for attendants and for groom. • Keep up with writing thank-you notes for gifts received. • Schedule all details with caterer and reception facility. • Choose a friend to watch over gifts and guest book at reception. • Write church program and take to printer. • Address and mail wedding invitations. ONE MONTH BEFORE: • Final fitting of wedding dress and headpiece. Bring all accessories. • Meet with florist, discuss all wedding flowers and when florist can bring flowers to the church and/or reception site. TWO WEEKS BEFORE: • Final check of guest list. Call guests that have not RSVP’d. • Work on seating plan after final guest count. • Final check with wedding attendants: Do they have their headpieces, shoes and other accessories? Do their gowns fit properly? • Gather last-minute accessories such as wedding guest book, cake knife, rice bags, toasting glasses, napkins, etc. • Go with fiance to fill out marriage license information. ONE WEEK BEFORE: • Try on your wedding dress and accessories. Practice with hairstyle and makeup. Break in your wedding shoes. • Ask friends and relatives to help with last-minute duties. • Make sure family and wedding party know sequence of events, transportation, etc. for wedding day. • Check with musician that music will start 1/2 hour before ceremony.

Denaie and Thomas - Wedded in Wolfeboro - Sept. 23, 2011 (Birch Blaze Photography)
From the time of their engagement, Denaie and Thomas wanted their wedding to take place near the water. Indeed, Thomas proposed to Denaie at the Rachael Carson Salt Pond Reserve in Maine and his father grew up on Lake Winnipesaukee. When the couple saw the Wolfeboro Inn, situated very close to Winnipesaukee in Wolfeboro, Denaie says, “The view honestly took my breath away! The inn and location was everything I ever dreamed of.” Planning was smooth due to the help of the Wolfeboro Inn staff. “Paula, the bridal coordinator at the inn, was so sweet and really cared about our needs,” Denaie adds. All wedding events - the rehearsal dinner, ceremony and wedding reception took place at the inn. The rehearsal dinner was held on the inn’s Winnipesaukee Belle. The pretty vessel toured the lake while the wedding party and guests dined and danced. “It was truly magical,” Denaie says. The ceremony took place in the beautiful outdoor gazebo at the inn, overlooking the lake. Appetizers were served to guests during cocktail hour at the inn and consisted of proscuitto wrapped asparagus, bruschetta and spring rolls. Dinner and dancing for the reception was held in the inn’s ballroom; guests were served steak with an au jus gravy or Chicken Marsala, fresh green veggies and mashed potatoes. Personal touches made the day memorable, such as bubbles to blow on the just-married couple, because “we really wanted our guests to have fun!” Denaie laughs. Colors were purple and blue - Thomas loves blue and purple is Denaie’s favorite color. “We had fortune cookie favors because Thomas loves Chinese food. The groom’s cake was fashioned to look like a take-out box filled with chicken fingers. The cake was a gift/joke from my parents,” Denaie explains. “We also had a slide show with pictures from our childhood and our eight years together. Further touches were name tags placed on wine corks because of my love of wine.” Each table was named after locations the couple had visited with matching pictures of them in each location. Books on each table were for guests to leave loving thoughts for the newlyweds. The 1960 Thunderbird belongs to Thomas’ cousin who lent it for the day for an added classy touch. It was to be used for transportation to a nearby church which was a backup location in case of rain. cont. on pg. 60

Vintage has been the style of choice for weddings for quite some time. The trend seems to be a lasting one. Where better to define vintage style than at an antiques and ephemera shop? The Shoppes at Red Hill in Moultonboro was the perfect setting for a day of antique decor and jewelry to add sparkle to the wedding. The beautiful bride’s old-fashioned look was complemented by a waterfall bouquet from Renaissance Florals and being surrounded by the antiques in the shop. than the backyard. “Finding a venue was a challenge for me,â€? Samantha explains. “I knew what I wanted but the fit just wasn’t right at all the places we toured. I wanted something truly unique and show stopping. The barn was our best bet for a truly unique guest experience. One little bit of advice about having an event in a field or barn or a space that isn’t an actual venue: You may think you will save money not paying a room rental or for food and beverages, but the money will go toward other things because the space may not have restrooms, heat, AC, lighting, staging, rentals. Just things to think about. It may run you a little extra in the budget but the outcome is exactly what you want! “The barn is on my father and stepmother’s property. It is not used for events, just this one very special day. It took them about a years’ worth of work to get it ready. We had to install a second floor railing, fans, lighting, etc. We handpicked the lighting we wanted to use in the space to really make it pop. It was decorated to perfection, from the side tables, to lighting, to furniture accents, to votive candles placed just perfectly.â€? The cocktail hour was held under a sail cloth tent in the back yard - the spot where Samantha and Bryan got engaged. The food was catered by the Coe House; appetizers included Baby Red Potato stuffed with lobster salad, fresh chives and caviar crème fraiche, Artichoke Mousse Puffs, Mini Crab Cake, Old Bay remoulade, Bruschetta, roasted garlic, fresh mozzarella, tomato balsamic vinaigrette, eggplant caviar, olive tempenade, Flat wraps filled with goat cheese, walnuts and figs and Potato Pancakes topped with smoked salmon rosette and capers and a raw bar with Jona crab claws, shrimp and more. Dinner in the barn was buffet style and included plated salads, roasted salmon with basil butter, citrus Basmati rice, grilled swordfish, pasta, lobster manicotti, seared Statler chicken, Petit Filet Mignon. Dessert was wedding cake in half carrot (Bryan’s favorite) and half lemon with raspberry preserves. The band, DC Project, played during the cocktail hour and at the reception. Although the barn was not large enough for dancing, a tent was added to the space in back of the barn, offering a nightclub
atmosphere. The white 1937 Rolls Royce was provided by Prestige Limousine and added a high-style touch to the day. How did Samantha pull off the gorgeous wedding from faraway Georgia? She says, “Family is KEY. If there is one thing I took away from this experience, it is that they want to help and be a part of this big day in any way, shape or form. Both my parents are in the same field, so finding key pieces for the wedding was natural for them. My dad found a great old ice chest that we put beer and wine in, the furniture at the cocktail reception was a mix of their own pieces and some from my father’s store, Home Comfort. Some of the small accent pieces, like the lady vases on the tables during the cocktail reception, are antiques they have collected over the years. It truly was a mix of different styles from many places and people. Thankfully my family was willing to use their personal items to make the whole thing come together.” Samantha’s advice for other brides-to-be? “You only get to be engaged and plan your wedding once. There will be laughter, tears, times when you feel giddy and full of excitement, followed by times when you feel overwhelmed…but somehow it will all come together. And if something doesn’t get done, or isn’t perfect, so what? Put your special touches on the day that reflect who you are as a couple.” A creative vision, a great family, talented wedding vendors and persistence really did pay off at this one-of-a-kind wedding.

veils are expected to be popular this year. “Fascinators and softer, ribbon headbands are big at Inspirations Bridal right now. Although a lot of brides initially say they don’t want a veil, in the end they do wear a veil for the ceremony, saying that it’s what ultimately creates the bridal feel for them. Some brides are recreating their mother’s veils to be used as their something old or something borrowed,” says Caitlin. Glittery shoes are in for 2012; Helen mentions that glitter and bright colors are popular for the bride’s finishing touch footwear. Caitlin adds, “Glittery shoes are part of the bigger trend of adding fun shoes to a gown. Girls who don’t want to take a fashion risk with their dresses love to integrate fun shoes. Some girls are doing blue shoes for their something blue or coordinating their shoes with the colors of their wedding. We have even had a couple of girls who are doing hiking boots, Converse, and cowboy boots. Traditional shoes are out the window.” At Inspirations Bridal, blush tone colors are popular. “They are a nice alternative to the traditional white and ivory and are very subtle. They come in colors such as pale shades of pinks, yellows and golds. It’s very classy looking.” Bridesmaids’ gowns are always changing. “We continue to see designers creating beautiful dresses that are truly ‘special occasion’ dresses that can be worn again and again,” Helen explains. “Not just your typical bridesmaid one-time-wear gowns anymore!” Shades of purple are popular for bridesmaid gowns at Inspirations Bridal. “Royal blue is a new contender,” Caitlin says. “Black remains popular too. We have seen an increasing number of brides who are choosing a color and a designer and allowing their bridesmaids to pick the dress. This works well because each maid is comfortable in a dress that fits their body type. And...they can choose a dress they will wear again (especially in black).” When asked what brides should know as they start to shop for their gown, Helen advises, “I always recommend making an appointment. I believe every bride deserves one-on-one attention. By making an appointment, it helps management staff the store properly. We want them to have a great experience.”

sewage, septic, etc. If you are renting a location, have the event manager on hand during the ground inspection. 6. Think about overhead obstructions such as trees, power lines, etc. in the area where you want the tent. 7. Tell the tent company what the ground is like at the site - grass, cement, asphalt, concrete, clay, stone, etc. Not all tents are staked into the ground. In the case of hard surfaces such as concrete, be aware you must have someone fill in the holes after the tent is removed. 8. It will cost extra to move the tent if you decide to move it during installation (in most cases it will have to be taken down and then re-installed). Be sure you know ahead of time exactly where the tent is to go. 9. When figuring out what size tent you need, it’s helpful to have at least a rough guest count. Allow 10 sq. ft. per guest in a tent. Factor in space for a head table, bar, dance floor, lounge area, cake table area, and other areas in your final decision on a tent size for your event. 10. Ask recently married friends for references for tent companies.

Ask your reception venue for a list of hair salons, DJs and photographers in the area. They often know the best vendors. “And..bigger is not always better. I will admit that
I wanted a huge wedding, but due to money constraints, I could not really afford a big wedding. That being said, my wedding was everything I ever dreamed of and more because I looked local and did my homework. “Stop thinking that anyone is going to notice if anything goes wrong. They won’t! Remember, stay calm and enjoy the process because before you know it, it is over and you will miss every second of it!” Denaie recalls the wedding day, “I was extremely emotional, as most brides are on their wedding day. Everytime I thought of crying, my mother-in-law would say ‘spiders’ because she knows how much I hate them! And I wouldn’t cry. Everything else went smoothly. My maid of honor just was a life saver. She

She kept telling me the sun was going to shine even when the weather said 70 percent chance of rain. “At 1 pm we called all the vendors and the reverend and said the wedding would be outside at the Wolfeboro Inn’s gazebo. At 3:30 I walked outside. There was no rain in sight. It was perfect!” After a glorious wedding, Thomas and Denaie enjoyed three days in Rhode Island at the vineyards and a week at Disney World. The couple stayed at Animal Kingdom. Denaie recalls, “It was amazing. Animals came to our balcony.
