Editor’s Letter

Love Is Not Cancelled

I recall the first time I heard that sentiment mentioned: it was at an area wedding venue and the managers were meeting to discuss the current state of the world: namely, COVID-19. I sat in on the meeting and listened as the possibilities of how life could change came to light. Would there be weddings in the near future? How long would there be necessary restrictions on gatherings? How would couples navigate all the changes? What about the weddings already booked, not to mention the altered arrangements for couples planning future weddings? “Well, love needn’t be cancelled,” one meeting participant said. We probably looked at her with uncertainty. “What would weddings be like if they weren’t cancelled?” I thought. Turns out, the woman at that meeting was correct: weddings have indeed continued, although with differences. Fewer guests, social distancing, mountaintop elopements, and weddings in unusual places are just a few of the things trending as of press time (late 2020). There is no doubt weddings will continue to evolve. There are some positive take-aways from the recent months: couples are doing their weddings their way like never before and making the day one of great personal meaning. They also are honoring the things that make their shared lives important: family, whether virtually or in the front row during the ceremony. For example, one bride honored loved ones by asking mothers, grandmothers and aunts to bring their wedding gowns for display at her wedding. Another bride asked the cake baker to make, as an add-on, a replica of her parents’ wedding cake. The point is, couples realize the importance of sharing their day with family and friends, and indeed, love has not been cancelled. Happy wedding planning,

A magical day, from the ceremony in the rustic and elegant barn at Newfound Lake Inn to the tented reception illuminated with sparkly lights. The just-married couple (above) snuck away for some lakeside photos on Newfound Lake.

40 LAKES REGION BRIDE

Amy & Chris Date of engagement: January 11, 2020 Date of wedding: August 14, 2020 A wedding near the lake is pure magic. If you add in a rustic and elegant barn and a tented celebration overlooking beautiful Newfound Lake in the Bristol, NH area, you have the ingredients for a wonderful wedding. When Amy and Chris were planning their wedding, the solution of where to hold the wedding was simple: Newfound Lake Inn, a property owned by her family. Amy says some of the features of the property that made it so special were “the beautiful barn, and the private beach and dock for sunset photos. We loved the fact that our guests were able to stay on location at the inn and enjoy the lake all weekend. The food was also amazing!” Kristina Kuusik, wedding planner at Mavinhouse Events, was “incredible and truly made our vision come to life. We couldn’t have done it without her. She did an amazing job securing our vendors and keeping everyone in the loop with all the Covid curveballs thrown our way. Linda Kohn, the events coordinator at the inn, was also extremely accommodating and helpful,” says Amy. The couple’s favorite part of their wedding day, recalls Amy, was, “Seeing each other for the first time as I walked down the aisle (my husband cried!). And dancing the night away with our friends and family.” Chris and Amy’s wedding vendors: Photographer: Whiting Photography

A Special Day in the Mountains Joe and Mary

Meredith Jane Photography www.meredithjanephoto.com

LAKES REGION BRIDE 43

Beautiful mountains created a perfect background for a New Hampshire country wedding.

all images this page Meredith Jane Photography 44 LAKES REGION BRIDE

Date of engagement: August 3, 2019 Date of wedding: September 26, 2020 Mary and Joe chose Whiteface Hollow in Tamworth, NH as the location of their wedding because, as Mary says, “Joe and I have been spending our weekends in the Green and White Mountains for years, whether we’re skiing in the winter, or chipping away at the 4,000 footers in the spring/summer. The country up north is where we share our best memories together. So, when it came time to plan our big day, we knew that being surrounded by the mountains was a good point to start our search. Whiteface Hollow was the perfect fit, as were panoramic views of Mt. Whiteface from the venue. Joe and I wanted our wedding to be a step away from the busy day-to-day for us and our guests, and Whiteface Hollow was the perfect place to do it. We knew we wanted a barn wedding, but our expectations were blown away as we made our way up the country road to Whiteface Hollow. Stepping onto the grounds for the first time was amazing. “John and Jennifer (the owners) gave us a tour of the entire property, and it was clear they had everything in line to ensure our wedding weekend would be exactly as we pictured. Our ceremony was held at St. Charles Borromeo in Meredith, so there were some extra logistics that we needed to address. John and Jennifer shared a thorough list of the top vendors in the area, as well as suggestions/tips to guide us in our planning every step of the way. We truly couldn’t have pulled off a socially-distant, COVID wedding without them! “One of the best parts about Whiteface Hollow is you get exclusive access to the grounds from Thursday through Sunday, with enough space for our family and friends to camp or bunk in the farmhouse together.” Mary mentions, “Like everyone else, we were faced with postponing or forging ahead when the pandemic hit in March. We needed to decide whether to postpone, drasti-

cally change our plans, or wait it out to see if we could continue with the wedding that resembled our original ideas. We started to look at the biggest risk factors based on what we knew at the time, and how we could plan accordingly to keep guests and vendors safe, and COVID-free. We needed plenty of space to distance, limited time indoors, free flowing air, extra masks, plenty of sanitizer, and some good luck! It was entirely a blessing that Whiteface Hollow had so much space and free flowing mountain air to ensure that our guests felt safe and comfortable. In the end, we didn’t have to change our initial plans too much. John and Jennifer provided guidance along the way, sharing the protocols and procedures they put in place and kept us informed on any NH state regulation changes that might impact our wedding. In order to pull this off, it really required that we over-planned, had backup plans, and over communicated everything to our guests. We wanted to ensure that those who joined us to celebrate felt comfortable coming and knew that we were taking the appropriate measures.” The couple’s advice for others planning a wedding, is “Keep your guests informed, and be super transparent about guest count, have precautions in place, etc. We used our wedding website’s homepage to share all the details (tables 6 ft apart, mask requirements, hand sanitizer available, etc). We live-streamed our ceremony for guests who weren’t comfortable attending, and this allowed them to share in our special day without having to put themselves at risk. We constantly tried to remind each other what our wedding was all about, and I think that mindset set us up to be flexible and laid back through the stresses of planning a wedding during a global pandemic. Be realistic and objective, and make decisions based on what you CAN control. Always have a backup plan for a worst case scenario.” continued on pg. 79

Samantha & Giuseppe Date of engagement: September 6, 2019 Date of wedding: October 11, 2020 Totally unique and utterly beautiful, the wedding style of Samantha and Giuseppe came from the groom’s love for the Renaissance and Viking time periods. It was also the bride’s dream of wanting a more modern wedding dress and style, so out of that the “Modern Medieval” theme was born. Says Samantha, “The entire day was really centered around this idea of a Renaissance man meets a modern-day princess and what that love story would look and feel like. “The tunics and cloaks were handmade by our friend, who also happens to be the tailor for many of the actors at King Richards Faire, Trinity’s Custom Creations.” The couple was fortunate that they chose an outdoor wedding venue so there was more than enough room for guests to maintain comfortable social distancing. With COVID restrictions, the guest list was whittled down to about 60 of their closest friends and family, which worked out beautifully and allowed it to feel like that small and intimate gathering of “lords and continued on pg. 50

Samantha’s favorite moment of the day was the “first look” time just before the ceremony when it was just the two of them hidden away together before the start of everything. Giuseppe’s favorite part of the wedding day was, he says, “taking the photos after the ceremony when all the guys got to lift Samantha up and play around for a few minutes.” However, both agree another favorite part of the day was watching Giuseppe’s groomsmen aka the “Kingsmen” perform an interpretive dance during dinner. A beautiful lakeside wedding with a small guest list made for a memorable and wonderful day.

Kayla and Rob Date of engagement: November 15, 2019 Date of wedding: August 15, 2020 Originally (pre-Covid), Kayla and Rob were planning to get married and have their reception at the Stone Church in Newmarket, NH with a guest list of 75 friends and family in attendance. They were patient and knew they had to figure out a rework of the original plan once the pandemic arrived. Wanting to celebrate in a way that was safe and enjoyable, the couple knew a 75-person gathering wouldn’t work, and when Kayla’s parents offered their Lakes Region home, it was a perfect solution. All portions of the wedding took place outside: the food was served on the porch, there was an outdoor tent, and all this greatly minimized risk. In May, they officially pulled the plug on their original wedding plan and it gave them three months to change course. The original wedding plan was for a DIY event, but they hired a day-of coordinator – Alana Claire Events. She was instrumental in making the day go smoothly and reworking the original plan. Showcase Events was a joy to work with, and provided the tent, linens, glassware, tables, gentle lighting, and a chandelier. Sheena from Showcase was helpful and set up tables with the Governor’s guidelines. Favors for the guests were NH maple syrup and a mask! Kayla’s father built the ceremony arch and the florals that decorated the arch were created by their godmother, a retired florist. The couple kept the list down to 15 guests by choosing their parents and siblings, and then their three closest friends. Rob’s father

included Rob’s grandmother by face timing with her during the ceremony. Rob’s grandmother provided a letter, which was read at the wedding. This was the couple’s most memorable part of the day. The things that made the day special included having the wedding at the family home, the arbor built with love, and the exchange of vows, which was memorable and touching for everyone. (The couple confides that even Mel, their photographer, teared up!) Instead of traditional dancing, the couple opted to offer lawn games for guests, and it was very popular. The Couple’s Wedding Vendors: Catering: Common Man, Plymouth with a menu of Mac and Cheese, and a chicken dish. Wedding Cake: Laura from E(at)xactly Cakes made a vegan 2-layer wedding cake. One layer was cookie monster – vanilla cake with caramel and oreos and chocolate fudge; another layer was lemon lavender. Flowers: Made by Kayla’s godmother, and included sunflowers because they grew outside the couple’s first apartment. Rentals: Showcase Events Officiant: Rev. Erica Hewitt Wedding Photographer: Mel Tata Photography

Elizabeth & Levi Date of engagement: December 24, 2018; Date of wedding: September 6, 2020 One look at Elizabeth and Levi’s intimate wedding day at the bride’s parents’ home and many words come to mind such as elegant, rustic, woodsy, lush and utterly gorgeous. Certainly the florals took center stage, creating the feeling of a magical fairyland wedding. Added to this, the style and use of special touches such as the pink Depression glass for the table from the collection of Elizabeth’s mother, Nancy, made the wedding personalized. The couple had always planned a rustic and elegant affair with family in attendance. With about 10 months to plan the wedding, Elizabeth and Levi developed their conceptual ideas of the wedding. Elizabeth’s mother, Nancy, did the planning. The colors for the wedding were gray greens, peachy pinks, cream and silver. continued on pg. 58

Woodsy Outdoor Wedding continued from pg. 57 The wedding was a labor of love for Nancy (the mother of the bride), and she created a wonderful atmosphere using colors and textures. The antique china that graced the wedding table was unique and gave a nod to the family’s past. The glassware and salad and dessert plates were “pink” Depression glass, some of which was collected by Elizabeth’s great aunt, and other pieces were collected over the years by Elizabeth’s mother. The sterling flatware is half Elizabeth’s grandmother’s sterling from her wedding in 1950, and the other half is from Elizabeth’s mother’s Old Maryland Engraved, given to her in 1984. Speaking of the silver color, the table cloth was found by Elizabeth about a year before the ceremony, and the table design flowed from tarnished sterling metallic threads of the “lace”. Certainly the flowers were a beautiful and memorable part of the wedding and reception, and were created by Branch & Bloom in Wolfeboro, NH. Says Elizabeth, “It was amazing how Rebecca (of Branch & Bloom) took a few inspirational photographs and a conversation with my mom and me and was able to perfectly create exactly what I’d imagined. She’s truly an artist.” The table centerpiece was enhanced by 12 silver compotes filled with flowers and 12 silver candlesticks. These have been collected by Elizabeth’s mom over the years, and built into the design of the flowers from the beginning. Including the bride and groom, there were 17 celebrating the nuptials. Elizabeth and Levi wrote their own vows and self-united. Says Elizabeth’s mother, Nancy, “The entire event was magical for all who shared the day.” Elizabeth and Levi’s Wedding Vendors Photographer: Eric McCallister Photography

Stephen’s Landscaping in Center Harbor provided the hydrangeas which graced the front of the tent. Arch: The 1900 arch from San Francisco was brought to New Hampshire by Elizabeth’s parents, with the idea of using it in Elizabeth’s wedding in the future. Transportation: Molly the Trolley picked up all the guests and brought them to the ceremony. After the ceremony, the trolley took the guests around the Wolfeboro Town Docks and the area. Tents/Rentals: Lakes Region Tent and Event provided the tent and the chairs for the ceremony and in the tent. The ceremony lighting was provided by Elizabeth’s parents, and installed by Elizabeth’s brother, John and girlfriend, Casey. Fairy

He also really liked sitting alone, together, on the trolley after the wedding. He says it was nice to have a moment with me after the big day we had. “For me, the importance of having a small wedding was about being able to say the things I needed to say to Levi and I knew I could only do that if I had the intimacy of family. I thought of our ceremony as a promise I was making to Levi, but also to my family, and it was important that I knew they saw I was taking it seriously. “

Tent Tips For an outdoor gathering, a tent is a great way to keep your guests dry should it rain and free from hot summer sun or other weather. There are many things to consider if you are thinking a tent would be great for your wedding. According to Sheena Abbott of Showcase Events, the following tips/questions will help you as you pursue a tent rental. -Are there underground utilities in the tent area (septic, gas, electric)? -What is the surface of the tent placement (grass, asphalt, sand)? -Will your space hold the size tent you need? -Would you like to fit everything under one tent (dinner, dancing, band/DJ) or under smaller tents? -What type of tent will fit your budget? -Is a catering tent needed? -Is your event taking place at a rental home? -Is there accessible power? -A site visit is always a good idea! Woodsy Outdoor Wedding continued from pg. 59 “My favorite part was looking out onto our wedding party in the middle of the ceremony and seeing my aunts and uncles, my parents and grandparents; people who all had been married 30, 40, even 70 years and feeling like the promises I was making to Levi honored the lessons I’d learned growing up around those couples. There’s a lot of pressure when you’re planning a wedding to do things a certain way, and in that moment I felt really happy that we’d managed to create a ceremony that honored what we wanted from our wedding.” The couple were self united and it was a personalized choice for both. Elizabeth recalls, “For Levi, self uniting was intimidating. It was a vulnerable action to take in front of family and soon to be family members. In my heart I knew marrying ourselves was the right decision, but I was intimidated, too. I was so nervous the entire day leading up to our wedding; I had the worst butterflies! I kept worrying that what I’d written wouldn’t be what Levi needed to hear from me or that what he would say would be somehow better than what I’d come up with. I was also worried I wouldn’t be able to say the actual words; the few times I’d practiced leading up to our wedding day I’d started crying so hard I couldn’t get anything out. “But once we were up there, it felt so right, just Levi and me, declaring to the world how we felt about one another and defining our relationship on our own terms. That’s the type of people we are...we frequently travel a path more difficult to do what’s right for us. Marrying ourselves was hard; but like so many things in life that are challenging, we got so much out of it. I couldn’t imagine it any other way.”

Garden Wedding Cheyenne and Hannah

Robin Easler Photography www.robineaslerphotography.com

74 LAKES REGION BRIDE

Date of engagement: May 11, 2019 Date of wedding: June 12, 2020 Hannah and Cheynne were looking at an apartment the year before they married and happened to drive past Tarbin Gardens. It was the first and only venue location the couple looked at in person when they were wedding planning, and says Cheyenne, “We knew we wanted to get married there literally the second we pulled into the parking lot. The maximum occupancy was more than suited for our already small guest list and because we were planning on an outdoor wedding, the shade coverage was perfect. “The main reason we picked Tarbin Gardens (in Franklin, NH) was because of how beautiful everything was. We are flower and plant lovers and our wedding was themed around succulents, so it was more than perfect for us.” Although the pandemic meant adjustments for many weddings, Cheyenne says, “We already had a small guest list and the garden grounds were so expansive we did not have to make huge adjustments. We did have concerns when COVID first started about whether or not we would have to postpone.” (They did make a postponement date for September with the venue should they have had to cancel the original date.) “The venue also asked us to seat no more than six people at a table so we had to adjust our order and get bigger tables and an extra one.” The couple provided hand sanitizer throughout the reception area, as well as disinfectant wipes and wearing of masks was encouraged. Hannah’s favorite part of the day was the two staged photo shoots. She recalls, “We did one after the ceremony with our

bridal party and our moms and it was really fun. And Cheyenne and I had a private photo shoot after food was served and took pictures at different areas around the venue. My favorite was having photos taken in and around the succulent greenhouse.” Cheyenne’s favorite part was the ceremony; she says, “We practiced once the day before. On the day of the wedding, all went well! Seeing my future wife smile at me was probably the best part of the whole day.”

The wedding was themed around succulents. The colors were based around colors found on succulents. There were some shades of green, and the bridesmaid’s dresses were each a different shade of purple/red, and the men’s bowties were a purple/red color. It all tied into the decorations for the wedding and on the cake. Cheyenne’s dress also had tiny baby pink flowers throughout it to tie into a garden look. continued on pg. 76

The cake reflected the soft colors of the wedding and the greenery of Tarbin Gardens.

The couple says, “We provided the main courses and all the beverages, and we asked guests to volunteer different hors d’oeuvres we wanted to include. We provided chicken, steak, and shrimp kebabs with various vegetables, two different mixed drinks we made ourselves and a red sauce mixed with an Alfredo pasta dish. And we also had two kinds of homemade dips (buffalo and spinach), a fruit bowl, Pigs in a Blanket, Caesar salad, meatballs, potato and pasta salad, and a few other things.”

Ceremony officiant: The couple says, “Our wedding was nonreligious. We had Lisa Parker, a private Justice of the Peace based in Henniker. She was lovely to work with; she gave us several samples to choose from and we could add, remove, and personalize it to create our perfect ceremony. We loved how our ceremony came out.”

continued from pg. 45 Mary’s favorite part of the day, she says, was “Stepping into the limo just moments after we were officially married and sharing a 30 minute ride to our venue to really soak things in and enjoy some alone time as husband and wife. We were overjoyed with excitement and love—sipping on champagne and listening to Fleetwood Mac and Dave Matthews Band, two of our all-time favorite bands.” Joe’s best part of the day was “Joining my wife at our table once we had finished our first dance. The sun was just starting to set behind the mountains overlooking the barn, and the sky turned a beautiful hazy red. We got to sit back and reflect on the day so far, and enjoy a few drinks with each other while our guests all did the same.” The original plan was to use Whiteface Hollows’ Tasting Room for the cocktail hour so guests could comfortably spread out on the grounds and enjoy cocktails and hors d'oeuvres inside in the event of inclement weather. Fortunately, it was a 70 degree sunny day, so the guests were able to soak up the sun outdoors on the Tasting Room’s gorgeous patio while enjoying their cocktails and starting to watch the sun set.
