I DON’T CARE WHAT MY HUSBAND SAYS, I am NOT

a foot-stomping, Mt. Crumpet-climbing, stinky-souled, cantankerous recluse who hates Christmas!

Sure, I wear a sour, grinchy frown while I’m doing all the driving, shopping, decorating, wrapping, cooking, unwrapping, cleaning, and undecorating that the holiday season entails. And if I’m being honest, I have to admit that nearly every December I explode in a not-so-jolly tirade in which I threaten to cancel Christmas and its endless barrage of things to do and places to go. ‘Course there’s also the fact that my grown children still to this day sing “She’s a mean one, Mom the Grinch.” Dang it…my husband is right, isn’t he? (Please don’t tell him I said that.) I am a Grinch. But if I may, I’d like to speak in defense of my green curmudgeony counterpart—and not just because we share some not-soflattering personality traits. Don’t you think the narrator of his tale was a bit judgy? After all, he did compare the Grinch to a dead tomato with moldy purple splotches. He even said the Grinch’s heart was full of unwashed socks and he had garlic in his soul. No wonder the Grinch smelled so terribly… which might explain why he didn’t particularly want to be around people. Adding to the Grinch’s problems, of course, were his too-tight shoes, some sort of physical ailment related to how his head attached to his body, and a heart condition— that’s enough to make even the most congenial among us a bit grouchy. The Grinch wasn’t a monster—he was simply a misunderstood, albeit stinky, homebody desperately in need of a metaphorical heart transplant.

So I’ve decided to be MORE like the Grinch, not less, only hopefully without the stench. I plan on concentrating on the opening my heart part, not the nasty-wasty Christmas-hating part. And I hope I have a heart transformation like his, too; one in which I embrace all that comes with the Christmas season—giant to-do list of things to do and places to go included. Because though the true essence of Christmas isn’t about the going and the doing, it is about spreading love and happiness to others as we go and we do. I’m hopeful my heart transformation will help me to keep the true meaning of Christmas joyfully in my heart all year long. And I’m hopeful my family finds my newfound joy contagious. Should I backslide, though, and my husband tells me I’m behaving like the Grinch, I’m simply going to respond, “Thank you! That is so sweet of you to say!” w DANA JORDAN PUBLISHER

Yes, I see myself in the brokenness of the green guy. Maybe you see yourself, too. Because aren’t we all in need of a heart makeover? Couldn’t we all stand for our hearts to grow a bit? Would we not all benefit from the life transformation that happens when, like the Grinch, we open our hearts to the mercy and help and grace that are available to us through the birth of our Savior? After all, that’s an eternal Christmas gift that even the Grinch was unable to resist.

LIVE, LEARN,

Life takes practice! And though they don’t always come wrapped in a shiny red bow, the lessons we learn along the way are invaluable gifts that are worth sharing. Here are a few noteworthy examples featured in this issue: KEEPING IT REAL

“My faith demands that I do whatever I can, wherever I am, whenever I can, for as long as I can with whatever I have to try to make a difference.” –PRESIDENT JIMMY CARTER

SPREADING LOVE AND JOY ALL YEAR LONG

Be sure to check out PAGE 20 to discover the unique and personal ways Dr. Coral Kirscher provides for her patients at her medical spas Renew Health and Wellness and Lake Norman Skin & Laser, which just opened a new location in Denver. “I want to make sure my patients feel heard and know that I’m 100 percent on their health journey with them. We pride ourselves on being proactive and not reactive and are with our patients every step of the way.”

For the ladies of West Lake Dentistry in Denver (PAGE 26), leaving love and smiles in their wake is something they do 365 days a year. It’s a way of life for this dynamic team. Their words echo throughout the office almost in unison: “We want to know about our patients’ needs, desires, fears, concerns, and anything that we can do to make their visits with us as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. We truly care about their lives and their families ... one of the best things about dentistry is the emphasis on the relational aspects, which we focus on and value tremendously.”

RESILIENT AND DETERMINED

Flip on over to PAGE 34 and meet Dr. Heather Hill Day of Graystone Eye Associates in Hickory. After losing her mom when she was just 19, she has learned to carry on her mother’s spirit by being the best version of herself— determined, loving, giving, and grateful. “My mother’s death helped me to be both a stronger mother and doctor because I realized how important relationships are. I never knew how many lives she touched until after her passing ... I strive every day to be the woman she was.” w

WHAT’S IN YOUR WAFFLE? For the millions who suffer from food allergies, the holidays can be especially challenging. Here are some tips to help you through all the upcoming events where food itself is the celebration— Try naturally gluten-free foods such as quinoa and rice. Dips like chutney and hummus on rice crackers with fresh fruits and veggies make a delicious appetizer. For milk or soy allergies, try substituting coconut milk instead of the usual cream, soy, or nut milks. For your main meat or even tofu recipes, be sure to avoid pre-marinated or pre-spiced foods. You can make your own flavorings by using olive oil and fresh herbs such as rosemary, thyme, marjoram, and garlic. For desserts, focus on fresh fruits that are in season such as kiwi, orange, persimmon, lemon, mandarin, clementine, apple, and pear.

DOING EXCEPTIONAL WORK IN THE LAKE NORMAN COMMUNITY, A LEADER WHO IS PAVING THE WAY TO CHANGING OUR ATTITUDES AND INSPIRING CONFIDENCE IN THE FUTURE.

on WHAT’S NEW: Our daughter Harbor Deann will turn one on March 23 and we can’t wait to celebrate the big day ... she is our complete world and joy! Also, my new medical spa Lake Norman Skin & Laser is growing with our newest location now open in Denver. We are proud to offer the best in Botox, one of a kind medical weight loss, custom facials, laser hair reduction, anti-aging, hair restoration, and exosome therapy. on BEING PROACTIVE INSTEAD OF REACTIVE: I was diagnosed with autoimmune conditions including Hashimoto’s and lupus at a young age and after a lot of self-guided research, I realized my symptoms were caused by a medication I had been prescribed. Unfortunately, I did not get that knowledge from any of the doctors I was seeing at the time and was only met with adversity. That experience drives me to be an advocate for my patients. I want to make sure they feel heard and know that I’m 100 percent on their health journey with them. This continues to be the reason I remain so dedicated to my weight loss and weight management programs. People who choose to be proactive when it comes to their health and weight loss end up avoiding so many health problems as they age such as type II diabetes, high blood pressure, heart attack, and stroke. Weight management has always been a passion of mine and I love helping people achieve their goals.

on SETTING A HIGHER STANDARD: I personally specialize in weight loss and thyroid/ hormone management at my and my husband’s medical center Renew Health and Wellness as well as at LKN Skin & Laser. Our programs are unique, individualized, and get phenomenal results. We blend the best components of traditional medical practice along with a holistic and natural approach—all while achieving better outcomes for our patients without surgery or toxic synthetic medications. We focus on treating the underlying condition rather than just prescribing medication to treat a group of symptoms. on FAMILY AND HOME: We are very involved in our local church, and family and friends are what we truly treasure the most. We enjoy all things outdoors and like to stay active. Hiking and our CrossFit classes are among our favorite things to do ... and of course the summertime is filled with boating and all kinds of lake fun! w WRITER Leslie Ogle

in perspective. Everything I do now is for my family. I rely heavily on my faith to reset and recharge. There is nothing like that quiet time in prayer or reflecting on the word of God through music or devotions to remind me what life is all about and why I do what I do. My faith gives me hope, strength, and true purpose.” There was some serendipity that brought Dr. Murtagh to West Lake Dentistry. Back in 2010, she was a receptionist at a dental office in Charlotte, and Dr. Naylor was an associate dentist there. “We worked together for one year before I went to dental school,” she explains, “and became good friends. Keeping in touch through the years, we always wanted to work together again and now we are finally able to do so.”

WE ARE

OUR PATIENTS ARE GETTING THE QUALITY CARE THEY DESERVE.

A rare LKN native, Dr. Murtagh grew up in Huntersville and attended UNC-Chapel Hill for dental school. She then moved to Boston and worked in a private practice outside the city. It was there that she met her husband, and they moved back to Lake Norman in 2019. They have two boys: 3-year-old Quinn and Max who is two and a half. Their beloved French Bulldog, Butter, rounds out the group. “Live and let live,” Dr. Murtagh says, “is one of my favorite expressions. You never know what someone may be experiencing in their life ... you don’t know their situation so you can’t judge them. Why not give each other the benefit of the doubt? We should all treat everyone with kindness and grace even if they may not be extending the same courtesy. If more people did this, I think we would be a more understanding society and maybe happier overall.”

The entire team has a philanthropic and giving nature. Dedicating numerous hours to community service, they have also participated in organizations such as the MOM (Mission of Mercy) program which operates mobile clinics that enlist dentists, dental students, and other volunteers to provide preventive, restorative, and surgical dental treatments. “Here at West Lake Dentistry,” Dr. Naylor concludes, “we are devoted to giving back to our community and to making sure our patients are getting the quality care they deserve. We want to know about our patients’ needs, desires, fears, concerns, and anything that we can do to make their visits with us as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. We strive to change people’s lives by making them happier and healthier ... if we can do that, we feel fulfilled and successful.” w

would have two conversations with myself every year. The first one would take place the day after Thanksgiving. As I unpacked my holiday decorations, I would immediately start grumbling to myself…

How am I going to salvage these crinkled bows? Where is the garland? Did I accidentally throw out the star for the tree?!!! Right then and there I would make myself a promise. Raising a half-lit string of lights over my head I would swear that this year, when I packed up my holiday décor, I would be organized so decorating next year would be quick and easy! The next conversation I’d have with myself would take place on January 1. After sticking to my new diet and exercise regimen for a full four hours, my energy would be low, and my resolve to honor my holiday-packing-plan would be weak. I’d toss the decorations into a few boxes, throw them in the attic, and promise not to berate myself next December.

30

After years of beating myself up and promising renewal, I finally took action last year. I run a company that preaches the benefits of organization. I’ve embraced them in my closet, my pantry, and my home office. It was time to bring that discipline to holiday season! DECEMBER 2023

GET YOUR

ORGANIZE ON!

STE P O N E: I dedicated a space in my garage for decorations, so I could access them easily. I built some large, deep cabinets at the far end of the garage, and left an open space where I could roll our Christmas tree in and out. Just knowing I wouldn’t have to climb up an attic ladder or squeeze giant boxes through a tiny crawl space next year made me happier. STE P TWO : I went shopping for storage items. You don’t need expensive bins to be organized. One-gallon plastic bags are a perfect way to protect lights, prevent tangling, and keep track of those little fuses. A rod installed in one of my garage cabinets was the perfect place to store bows. I hung the bows on a hanger, then placed tissue paper in the loops so they’d keep their shape. Ornaments were placed in plastic cups lined with tissue paper, then lined up in a shallow plastic bin. STE P THR EE: Label each box clearly on the top and side and be specific in your labeling, (ie “Greenery,” “Lights,” “Ornaments”) or you can label your boxes by décor location (ie “Dining Room Table,” “Mantle,” “Family Room”). Don’t rush. Go box by box. Even if it takes you a little longer to clean up this year, you will save that time in multiples in years to come! STE P F O U R : Create a wrapping station. This is the gift that keeps on giving. I dedicated a small space in my laundry room, but you could also use a spare bedroom or home office. A shallow drawer can store tissue paper, slats organize gift bags, a rod holds wrapping paper, and bins on slatwall hold decorative pens, small cards, tape, and scissors. Everything is at your fingertips! w

First impressions matter, and the exterior of your home is the first thing potential buyers will see. Start by ensuring your front yard is well-maintained. Trim bushes and keep them six inches from the home, mow the lawn regularly, and add colorful flowers or potted plants to create an inviting atmosphere. A fresh coat of paint on the front door goes a long way as well.

SP RI NG CLE ANI NG:

Spring cleaning is a critical step in preparing your home for sale. Give your home a thorough cleaning—focusing on windows, floors, and any neglected corners. You can use airfreshening products but make sure they are light, natural scents.

DE CLUT T E R AND DE P E RSONALI ZE :

Remove personal items such as family photos from your living spaces to allow potential buyers to envision themselves in the home. Declutter by packing away unnecessary items. The goal is to create a clean and spacious look.

LI GH T E N UP:

Natural light is a great asset during the spring season. Open your blinds and curtains to let in as much sunlight as possible. Consider adding light, sheer curtains, or blinds to create a bright and welcoming ambiance in your home.

FRE SH E N UP W I T H SP RI NG DE COR:

Exchange heavy winter items, such as blankets and pillows, for lighter, more colorful accents. Fresh flowers in various rooms in your home are a classic and classy touch—creating a vibrant, springtime feel.

NE UT RAL PAI NT COLORS:

Fresh paint is crucial to attaining top dollar for your home. Opt for neutral, light colors on your walls. Neutral shades provide a clean canvas for potential buyers, making it easier for them to imagine their own style and preferences in the space. Homes with too many colors tend to overwhelm the buyer.

KI TCH E N AND BAT H ROOM UP DAT E S:

Kitchens and bathrooms can be a significant selling point for your home. Minor updates (such as changing cabinet hardware, installing new faucets, or replacing outdated light fixtures) can make a significant difference without breaking the bank.

OUT DOOR SPACE S:

Clean outdoor furniture, add colorful cushions, and set up a welcoming vibe so buyers can envision themselves enjoying the space ... make it party-ready!

E NLI ST P ROFE SSI ONAL H E LP:

Consider working with a real estate agent or professional stager who has experience in the spring market. Some agents can also assist with staging your home. They can provide valuable insights, suggest improvements, and help you market your home effectively. w

Focus and a Clear Vision

BALLE T DA N CIN G TAU G H T H E R G R ACE ... it taught her

to be calm and flexible. Her love of reading and travel opened her eyes to possibilities. However, it’s the values instilled in her by her family that helped Dr. Heather Hill Day of Graystone Eye Associates in Hickory to become the person she is today—determined to live her life with a giving heart and unwavering gratitude. “My childhood optometrist was a huge inspiration in my life,” Dr. Day explains, “and led me down the path of eyecare. I started wearing glasses and contact lenses at a very young age, and each year I would go to visit him knowing I would leave with better vision ... and really cool glasses! The ability to see leaves on trees that I had never seen before changed my life, and I wanted to give that type of vision to everyone around me.” As a teenager, Dr. Day enjoyed volunteering at local shelters and giving back to her community in various ways. She credits her father who is a North Carolina historian and has a museum centered around North Carolina history in downtown Statesville. “Dad taught me the Dr. Heather Hill Day importance of community and the value GRAYSTONE EYE ASSOCIATES in helping others, and I knew early on I wanted to be a doctor. After graduating from high school, I attended Appalachian State University The ability to see where I majored in chemistry and minored in biology.” leaves on trees After a move to Ohio and graduating top of her class from The Ohio State College of Optometry, Dr. Day completed externships in ocular disease, low vision, and contact lenses. She then started working in Mooresville for a large ophthalmology group where she shadowed numerous surgeons before opening her own private practice in Statesville. “Eighteen years later,” she smiles, “I am blessed to be able to call Graystone Eye my new home.”

that I had never seen before changed my life, and I wanted to give that type of vision to everyone around me.

Upon hearing the stories she shares about her parents, her two siblings, and their upbringing, it is easy to see how they laid the groundwork for a successful life. Sadly, her mother passed away when Dr. Day was just 19 years old. Needless to say it was a significant loss but the spirit of Susan Annette Hill lives on. “My mother’s death helped me to be both a stronger mother and doctor because I realized how important relationships are. She was an amazing mom, wife, artist, teacher, and friend—always focusing on others and sharing her love of art with her students. I never knew how many lives she touched until after her passing. I strive every day to be the woman she was. It’s imperative to me that my daughter, Sydney, knows I am always here for her, even though I work long hours. I am very proud of who she has become and wouldn’t be the person I am today without her in my life.” w

For Flying Out Loud!

W H E T H E R YO U ’ R E T R AV E L I N G

for the holidays or celebrating the fact that they are over, we know travel can be stressful, especially in the winter! Delays, weather conditions, and TONS of folks who had the same idea can make for some trying moments. Here are a few tips to help you enjoy your winter getaway—

CHECK THE WEATHER. If you have a connection, pay attention to the weather conditions in your connecting cities, as well as at your departure and destination airports. Research ahead of time to determine which alternate flights might work best.

FLY SOUTH. Consider booking your connection through a Southern city where winter weather is not as big an issue. WHENEVER POSSIBLE, FLY DIRECT. Many times, it is the connecting flight that gets you in trouble. Do your initial flight searches with the “Nonstop Flights Only” button checked. You can also use searches such as “Show Nearby Airports” and “My Dates Are Flexible.” CHOOSE A MORNING FLIGHT. There are two good reasons for this: you are far less likely to have your flight affected by problems at other airports; and if your flight is canceled or delayed, your options for alternate flights on that same day are much better.

AVOID TAKING WRAPPED GIFTS. Security will have to open them, period. With the Transportation Security Administration searching checked bags as well as carry-ons, this applies to all of your luggage.

CONSIDER SMALLER AIRPORTS. So often these days, the sheer number of travelers can bog down the busier, larger airports. w For more travel tips or to plan a vacation, visit www.aaa.com.

CHIROPRACTIC CARE: A Holistic Approach to Health and Wellness C H I R O P R AC T I C CA R E I S A H O L I ST I C A N D N O N - I N VA S I V E H E A LT H CA R E

discipline that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders, particularly those related to the spine. It is a well-established and widely practiced healthcare profession that offers a unique approach to healing and wellness. This article explores the fundamentals of chiropractic care, its benefits, and how it can contribute to your overall health.

The Core Principles of Chiropractic Care Chiropractic care is rooted in the belief that the body has the innate ability to heal itself when provided with the right conditions. Chiropractors, who are trained professionals in this field, work on the principle that the spine plays a crucial role in maintaining good health. They aim to restore proper alignment to the spine, which in turn allows the nervous system to function optimally. This, in essence, facilitates the body’s natural ability to heal. LKN EXPERT

ProWellness Family Chiropractic was founded in 2015 by Dr. Robin Owings with the aim of assisting people in living life at their healthiest. Common Reasons for Seeking Chiropractic Care 1 B AC K PA I N : One of the most common

reasons people seek chiropractic care is for relief from back pain. Whether it’s due to poor posture, injury, or age-related issues, chiropractors use a variety of techniques, such as spinal adjustments, to alleviate discomfort and promote healing. 2 N E C K PA I N : Neck pain is often

associated with stress, poor ergonomics, or underlying spinal issues. Chiropractors can provide adjustments that alleviate tension and improve neck mobility. 3 H E A DAC H E S A N D M I G R A I N E S :

Regular chiropractic care has been shown to reduce the frequency and severity of headaches and migraines. This is often achieved through spinal adjustments that correct misalignments. 4 S P O RT S I N J U R I E S : Athletes frequently turn to chiropractors to enhance their performance and recover from sports-related injuries. Chiropractic adjustments can help maintain optimal body function and prevent injuries. 5 I M P R OV I N G P O ST U R E : Chiropractors

can provide guidance on maintaining proper posture and advise on exercises to strengthen the core, ultimately reducing the risk of musculoskeletal issues.

Benefits of Chiropractic Care Pain Relief Chiropractic care is renowned for providing effective relief from various types of pain, particularly in the back, neck, and joints. Improved Mobility By correcting misalignments in the spine and other joints, chiropractic adjustments can enhance mobility and range of motion. Non-Invasive Unlike surgery or medications, chiropractic care is a non-invasive approach to health, making it an attractive option for many. Preventative Care Chiropractic care isn’t just about addressing existing issues; it’s also a preventative measure. Regular adjustments can help maintain overall health and wellbeing. Holistic Approach Chiropractors consider the whole body and focus on addressing the root causes of health issues, rather than merely alleviating symptoms. Enhanced Nervous System Function A properly aligned spine promotes optimal nervous system function, which is essential for overall health.

DURING THE HOLIDAYS ... AND ALL YEAR LONG! W I T H S O M U C H G O I N G O N physically

There’s no question, despite all the fun and festivities, the holidays can be quite stressful. Varying personalities and relationships, chores, shopping, money, the busyness of the season ... all these things can cause even the most patient among us to become a bit Grinchy.

46

(shopping, cooking, traveling, volunteering) and mentally (family dynamics, ginormous to-do lists, bittersweet memories), it’s important to keep healthy schedules and practices in place. For example, get regular exercise; take it easy on the caffeine, sugar, and alcohol; get enough sleep; eat nutritious foods, and drink plenty of water. Check in on how you feel physically. Don’t push yourself and run on empty. If possible, try to develop a regular practice that will ground and relax you ... come back to the present moment and breathe. Starting and ending your day with some downtime, even five minutes, will make a big difference. Helpful habits include reading, guided imagery, yoga, meditation, deep breathing, stretching, or cuddling with your pet while listening to music. In all the hustle and bustle remember to count your blessings and be present for all the beautiful moments the season brings. And take note of the things you can control and those you cannot ... much stress is avoided and mitigated when you learn to let it go. Consider the following:
