Great Lakes Water Levels on the Rise New research shows that the frigid arctic-like weather the Great Lakes and Eastern United States have been experiencing this winter will likely contribute to a healthy rise in Great Lakes water levels in 2014. Rising and falling water levels in the Great Lakes are influenced by a number of factors, including evaporation, rain and snowfall, according to a news report published in the Petoskey News-Review in Petoskey, Michigan. “This winter’s bitterly cold weather is forming ice on areas of the lake that will reduce evaporation by blocking water vapor from rising into the atmosphere and keeping water temperatures cool well into the summer,” the paper reports. “That should help water levels continue a rebound that began in 2013 following an unusually long slump across most of the lakes dating from the late 1990s.”

If you’re looking to escape the Great Lakes’ cold and snow this month, head down to South Florida’s West Palm Beach for the 29th annual Palm Beach International Boat Show March 20-23. The show will feature more than $1 billion worth of yachts and accessories on display from the world’s leading manufacturers... and you’re pretty much guaranteed temperatures above freezing! Industry Mourns loss of Four Winns Founder Charlie Winn Charles E. “Charlie” Winn, a founder of Four Winns boat company in Cadillac, Michigan, passed away November 18. He was 70. Winn had a passion for the water, antique boats and boating in general. “Of all Charlie’s many interests, I would say his number-one passion was boating,” says his wife, Janna (pictured with Winn above). “He loved the Great Lakes, particularly venturing to the North Channel. We spent more than 30 years exploring by boat. He was such a fabulous, skilled captain. He had a natural ability for handling boats.” Winn was not only a founder of Four Winns, but also Lakeside Charlie’s Restaurant and Pheasant Ridge Estates, all located in Cadillac. He belonged to various yacht clubs in Florida and Michigan and held memberships in the Antique and Classic Boat Society and Great Lakes Cruising Club.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recently released a study that suggests physically separating the Mississippi River and Great Lakes watersheds is the most effective way to prevent aquatic species like Asian carp from moving between the two iconic waters. A coalition of conservation groups, including Alliance for the Great Lakes, National Wildlife Federation, Natural Resources Defense Council and the Sierra Club, echo the USACE’s findings, insisting the only option effective at stopping the transfer of invasive fish, parasites, grasses, algae and other organisms is constructing a physical barrier. USACE has previously admitted that a series of electrical barriers designed to repel Asian carp have been easily breached. For more information, visit greatlakes.org.
