Beyond the classroom

Where is Class Today?
First-year studies courses are designed, in part, to connect new students with the abundant resources of nearby Chicago. You’ll travel by train to Chicago with your first-year studies professor and visit one or more sites relevant to your course. For example, students taking New Media Art in Chicago visited the modern wing at the Art Institute of Chicago; those in Wild Chicago: Human Ecology in the Urban Landscape kayaked down the Chicago River; and students in Music Performance in Chicago went behind the scenes at Orchestra Hall, home to the renowned Chicago Symphony Orchestra. 6 Continents 20 Countries 27 Cities This year Lake Forest students will be studying in 27 cities around the world, from Sao Paulo to Beijing to Botswana to Athens to Washington D.C. Off-campus study provides our students with life-changing experiences that enhance their studies and give them a global perspective. Lake Forest also offers international internships.
“We know our students by name and prepare them to become responsible citizens of the global community.” – from the College’s Mission Statement.

Internships Give Our Students an Edge Not sure what career interests you the most? Want work experience to help you land a great job after graduation? College is the perfect time to explore professional areas of interest and to gain some experience to beef up that résumé. At Lake Forest, if you want an internship – you’ll get one. Our location near Chicago gives students many choices for internships in all areas. Some recent ones include the South African Consulate, Chicago Botanic Garden, Rolling Stone Magazine, Merrill Lynch, Shedd Aquarium, Chicago Sun-Times, US Green Building Council, City of Chicago, Illinois Holocaust Museum, and the Bank of China, among others.

What’s new On Campus A new “Caf” – the most recent addition to campus We take our meals seriously at Lake Forest, which is why the new addition to the Hart Dining Hall, completed in August, was such big news on campus. Unlike at a lot of college campuses, students rave about the food here and there’s something for everyone, whether vegetarian, vegan, or meat loving. The newly renovated cafeteria boasts a Mongolian grill, brick pizza oven, fresh produce station, dessert table, and expanded seating areas.

Investing in the future Lake Forest has invested more than $50 million dollars in campus improvements in the last seven years; the new “Caf” is the latest addition with more projects on the horizon. Recent renovations include a state-of-the-art library, new student center, new sports and recreation center, and a new football field, among others.

Focus on Faculty Experts ... Sc

Our Faculty have received their PhDs from the finest

graduate programs in the country. They are award-winning scholars whose research is supported by grants from the most prestigious organizations. They are experts in their fields and widely quoted in the media. And, most importantly, they are teachers and mentors who care deeply about their students’ success. They have chosen Lake Forest College because they can teach in small class settings and they have the resources of nearby Chicago to further their intellectual goals and enhance their teaching.

Ahmad Sadri, James P. Gorter Chair of Islamic World Studies and professor of sociology, is a regular commentator for National Public Radio in Chicago, BBC, and Voice of America, and is the author of several books.

cholars ... teachers ... Mentors ... “Lake Forest College has helped me mature in ways that would not have been likely had I gone to a larger university. I’m amazed at how qualified the professors are, but even more amazed at the amount of time they will spend with you outside of class. The connections I have forged with professors here have given me an advantage for my future plans of graduate school.” – David Curie ’13 • Ninety-eight percent of faculty hold a PhD or terminal degree in their field from places such as Stanford, Harvard, Princeton, MIT, Yale, Johns Hopkins, Northwestern, University of Chicago, University of Michigan, and University of Pennsylvania.

Professor of Biology Anne Houde’s research studies on behavioral ecology with guppies, has been published in numerous journals such as Science, Evolution, and Proceedings of the Royal Society, often with her students as co-authors.

• Faculty have been awarded grants and fellowships and recognized for their research and teaching by organizations such as the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, National Endowment for the Humanities, and the U.S. Department of Education. • Lake Forest professors are regularly contacted for expert comment on stories from media outlets such as the New York Times, Washington Post, LA Times, Wall Street Journal, The Korea Times, Boston Globe, Chicago Tribune, The Economist, Forbes Magazine, NBC, CBS, BBC, NPR, and many others.

“I earned my PhD at the University of Chicago and later taught there for three years. It’s a great school, but I wanted the opportunity to work more closely with undergraduates at all stages of their college careers. Lake Forest is a place where I can help students both find a passion and pursue it.” – Holly Swyers PhD Assistant Professor of Anthropology

Robert Baade, the A.B. Dick Professor of Economics and Business, is internationally recognized for his work in the field of sports economics and is one of the most widely quoted experts in the field. Professor Baade has published multiple research studies for organizations and think tanks such as the Brookings Institution and has consulted on numerous projects throughout the United States, Europe, and Canada.
