Jennifer Thomason, Class of 2006 At Lake Forest, one of Jennifer’s favorite classes was Econometrics. Taught by Associate Professor of Economics Robert Lemke, she learned to apply statistical analysis to economic research. An internship with Chicago financial advisory firm Scott Balice Strategies solidified her interest in pursuing a career in the field. Since graduating, Jennifer has worked as a regulatory economist for the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, where she conducts the competitive analysis for mergers and acquisitions in the banking industry. Brandon Johnson, Class of 2003 Before heading to Stanford University to pursue a PhD in biology, Brandon helped chart the direction of innovative Parkinson’s disease research at Lake Forest, working alongside Professor Shubhik DebBurman. Thanks to a faculty advisor invested in his success and strong scientific training, he went on to one of the world’s top graduate schools with plans to discover new medical therapies. Play-by Play Broadcaster for Hockey Team

Doug Plagens, Class of 2007 Doug went from campus DJ to hockey announcer after joining the College’s radio station WMXM 88.9 FM as a first-year student. Through on-the-job experience, he learned to forge relationships with players and develop his on-air style. After graduate school at Syracuse University’s S. I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, Doug landed in the broadcast booth for the Idaho Steelheads, the ECHL affiliate of the NHL’s Dallas Stars. Amy Gentry, Class of 2003 Amy took classes on the pre-law track, where constitutional law Professor Debra Levis used the Socratic Method (a teaching technique usually reserved for law schools) to test her ability to think on the spot, and a persuasive writing course taught her to structure and communicate arguments effectively. After graduating from Vanderbilt University Law School, Amy now specializes in corporate mergers and acquisitions at Bracewell and Giuliani, an international law firm based in Houston. A challenging curriculum and renowned faculty provide students with the skills necessary to succeed.

Eliza Topalski Fournier, Class of 1998 As she explored career options for environmental studies majors, Eliza signed up for the Mentor Program, which pairs students with alumni based on professional interests. A match with Betsey Starinchak Frank, Class of 1988, led to much advice and a summer internship tending the Shedd Aquarium’s gardens. Bill credits the individual attention from faculty as integral to his student experience. Professor of Chemistry William Martin pushed him to succeed in the classroom while a biology professor connected him with a cancer researcher who was looking for student assistance at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science. After graduating Bill went on to earn a medical degree and a PhD in pharmacology and molecular biology and today practices anesthesiology and conducts genomics research at Mayo Clinic. Amanda Mertens Campbell, Class of 1999 As an American studies major, Amanda took classes that addressed her many interests, including English, history, and politics. Now as minority counsel to the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee, where she advises Republican committee members on energy policy, Amanda credits the interdisciplinary nature of her education for her ability to understand how energy intersects with issues like public health, tax, and transportation.
