Learners will design instruction, student assignments, and assessments that help students think critically and technology enhance the learning experience. Learners will explore different models for incorporating technology (TPACK, SAMR, T-3) while developing their own beliefs about the purpose of technology in learning.

This class is geared towards students with a working knowledge of Google Applications for Education. Students will prepare for the Google Educator Level 1 exam, which costs $10 (payable via credit or debit card) to register for the exam. You must have a Google account either personal or through your district.

Despite the fact that students are digital natives and have only grown up in a time of technology, they often are not digitally literate. Digitally literate students have the digital citizenship skills to manage their digital lives and footprints. In this course you will learn how to teach students how to find credible sources online, deal with cyberbullying and drama, maintain their digital footprint and online identity, understand privacy and security, and learn how to balance media usage In addition, a focus on how to prepare students with 21st century skills of collaboration, communication, and problem solving will be addressed. With the explosion of artificial intelligence software in the last several months, teachers face a new concern regarding academic integrity. Through blended learning, this course will help teachers develop new academic integrity policies–while keeping it aligned with their district’s policies, investigate some of the more popular generative AI platforms and their classroom implications, and explore the ways in which AI can be helpful to teachers. In order to achieve the course goals, we will also dive into the difference between cheating and using resources appropriately in order to complete classroom assignments. By the end of the course, teachers will have considered the ramifications of AI for both them and their students and have a firmer grasp on this evolving technology.

Participants will learn what the data says about the current teaching force in America in regards to stress, red flags and warning signs, and resources and strategies to experience a healthier state of existence in the workplace. The course will provide educational professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to support individual and/or school wide wellness initiatives and best practices for preventing deteriorating health conditions. Requirements will include reading the book and supplementary materials, keeping an annotated reading log, discussing specific questions, and writing a reflection about how the reading and discussions have influenced your teaching practice. You will need to purchase a copy of the book for the course. We will meet remotely on the following dates: 9/20, 9/27, and 10/3 to discuss readings and thoughts about the book and how it applies to the classroom. Other resources may be introduced for reading and discussion and will be provided. The course can be taken for a letter grade or pass/fail.

This course is designed to facilitate adapting curriculum to suit student needs within your classroom. The course will utilize the Wizards of Wright curriculum provided by The Wright Brothers Institute as a starting point for our curriculum adaptation exercises. Teachers of all grade levels are invited to join as the goal of the course is to be able to take single curricular activities and adapt them to meet standards across a wide range of grade levels. Teachers who complete this course will be able to register for an “in-class” day where they can implement one of the activities from this course with the LEC instructor free of charge. In addition, teachers completing this course will have first right to join an LEC STEM Summer Camp in the summer of 2024 to receive free PD credits.

This course will introduce teachers to the concepts included in Biomimicry (Biomimicry is a practice that involves exploring nature-inspired designs and teaches how to use these natural strategies to solve human challenges.) This STEM-based instruction teaches how to bridge nature studies with engineering and design learning. Teachers will be introduced to the Biomimicry Institute’s Youth Design Challenge. Teachers will learn that teaching through the lens of biomimicry offers opportunities to reconnect students with the wonders of our natural world. After over a year of virtual instruction, students and teachers need time for social interaction, a chance to flex their creativity, and designated space to move around while still in a structured environment. This class offers a hands-on approach in order to learn how to increase student engagement and creative thinking with hands-on strategies that also involve getting up and moving around the room. This type of learning does require some technology but lends itself more readily to old-fashioned “analog” activities. We will complete metaphorical thinking activities, 4 corners, OnePagers, and other hands-on activities in order to learn about their various uses, and then we will work together to craft your own lessons that you can apply in your classrooms. Uncover the importance of explicit phonics instruction, developing content knowledge, and exposing readers to grade level text play in developing strong and successful readers. Course activities include reviewing ODE’s Plan to Raise Literacy Achievement, digitally engaging with cognitive scientists, and reconstructing a model of the Simple View of Reading. Countless American students struggle to read. All educators oversee content area standards that are related to literacy. We can all benefit from learning what cognitive scientists have discovered about the reading brain. This hybrid course explores the wide spreading interest in the science of reading (SOR) instruction. Through a variety of asynchronous type activities and independent exploration of the All Ohio Literacy Modules participants will learn how the brain becomes rewired to read and what cognitive scientists recommend for instructional literacy practice as well as the elements of structured literacy and what The National Reading Panel found to be effective and evidence based practices for instruction. The course content will highlight the importance of explicit phonics instruction, developing content knowledge, and exposing readers to grade level text play in developing strong and successful readers. Course activities include reviewing the All Ohio LIteracy Modules, ODE’s Plan to Raise Literacy Achievement, digital study of helpful tools and resources online, and reconstructing a model of the Simple View of Reading. Creation of artifacts, watching recorded lectures, and virtual investigation will provide a fascinating journey into brain based research, a tutorial on where to find evidence based curriculum aligned to the state’s literacy plan, and inform how SOR social media groups can be a powerful resource.

The science of reading recognizes the contributions cognitive psychology and neuroscience have made in our understanding of learning to read. Much of the focus has been on children learning to read, but in this course we will focus on how we can use what we know through the SOR to understand the role decoding and phonics may play in reading gaps among children fourth grade and older. In this course, teachers of students 4-12 will get an overview of what science tells us about decoding, explore how phonics plays an inextricable role in successful reading, and examine strategies and interventions that can be used to support the older student in developmentally appropriate ways.

Participants will learn the definition of dyslexia, red flags, and the findings of current brain research.
