An unusual offering, this classic Georgian Colonial has exquisite elegance, sophisticated style and architectural details that will exceed your expectations. The alluring entry with custom Chinese wall panels opens to a timeless living room rich with color and handsome moldings. The first floor master suite bedroom with fireplace, outfitted walk-in closet, marble bathroom with heated floors and exercise room complete with full bath is luxurious. The extended circular pillared dining room with floor to ceiling curved windows overlooks the 2700 square foot brick and bluestone patio and water fountain designed by landscape architect Rand Rosenthal, making a breathless statement. The owner commissioned Gunn and Smith Architects to design the exercise room, family room and kitchen additions to fit architecturally with the character and details of the original home. The expanded family room features a beveled ceiling, wood paneled walls and built-ins with doors leading to the terrace. Upstairs are four bedrooms and three full baths. The piece de resistance is the seasonal landscaping with woodland plants, a full sun cutting garden, walking paths, and a profusion of hydrangeas. Truly paradise! $2,195,000 CLAYTON · 314·725·5100 TOWN & COUNTRY · 314·569·1177 LAURAMCCARTHY.COM

EDITOR ‌IT’S HARD TO BELIEVE, BUT ONE YEAR AGO, ALMOST TO THE DAY, I married my best friend. It was a magical day – one I’ll certainly cherish forever. And although our love story is kind of my favorite (no bias here whatsoever), LN contributing writer Denise Kruse does a lovely job capturing the stories of six St. Louis couples’ big days in this week’s Elegant Living Weddings special section, starting on p. 43. If you’re currently planning your big day, we hope you find inspiration from these beautiful weddings. And even if you’ve already planned your dream wedding, we hope that you enjoy paging through this beautiful and heartwarming special section – and that it maybe even sparks a special memory from your own celebration. Also in this week’s edition, make sure to read the story behind Cory Herweck Woodworking (p. 31). Launched in January, Cory Herweck Woodworking crafts “rustic-meets-modern” furniture and accessories that are truly one-of-a-kind works. We hope that you enjoy this story, delightfully shared by LN contributing writer Brittany Nay, and find inspiration in Herweck’s “crafted with purpose” pieces, too. All the best,

Alecia Humphreys

n 2008, as the United States was in the depths of the Great Recession, a financial services firm rose from the ashes. Seeing that financial institutions were overlooking the most important aspect of their businesses – clients and financial advisers – Tad Edwards started Benjamin F. Edwards & Co. The St. Louis-based firm has a 130-year family legacy behind it, dating back to the late 1800s. When Edwards founded his firm, his vision was to establish a place where clients were put first. “[The firm] is a family,” he says. “Every decision we make, we ask ourselves how it’s going to affect our clients. It’s not about us – it’s about how we can help accomplish their goals and dreams.” Benjamin F. an experienced team of businesses services professionals. The firm now has 63 branches in 26 states. “We have assembled a phenomenal team of like-minded people who share the same values and vision,” Edwards says. “From the start, we knew it was essential that we be equipped to serve the needs of all investors – from those just starting out to those with sophisticated needs and challenges, like business owners.” Edwards and his team were true to their vision. Today, the company has a product and service platform able to handle investment needs from the basic to the complex.

Offering Business Owners strategic alternatives Doug Rubenstein, executive vice president, chief operating officer and director of capital markets, also works on the investment banking side of Benjamin F. Edwards. The investment banking group helps small- and middle-market companies and their owners evaluate strategic alternatives, including mergers, acquisitions and even the sale of the company. “Our process is about being patient, thoughtful and understanding the mindset of the business owner,” Rubenstein says. “In the event that a company decides that they want to sell, our job is to find the optimal buyer and get them to the finish line for a successful transaction.” Rubenstein says in most situations, the sale of a business is the single biggest transaction of a business-owning client’s lifetime, and it’s something that needs to be

handled delicately and professionally. “We’re happy to sit with our clients early, when they’re just beginning to think about alternatives,” he says. “In fact, as you start your business, you should be thinking about what your exit will be, whether it’s selling or passing it on to heirs. We’re here to help manage the entire transaction.”

executive services: it’s MOre than investMent Banking Before a client is ready to sell that business, people at Benjamin F. Edwards like Kortney Christensen, executive vice president and director of sales and marketing, are available to help business owners. Among her responsibilities, Christensen oversees the firm’s executive and business owner services area. Christensen says Benjamin F. Edwards has built a team of experts with decades of experience on matters important to business owners, including people who have worked for years in executive compensation, corporate retirement plans, insurance – including “key man” – and estate planning. “We are in a position to help business owners with whatever their needs are,” she says. “We take a tailored approach to each situation. These aren’t one-size-fits-all solutions. We work with business owners as their businesses evolve, whether they have short- or long-term planning needs.” Edwards concurs, noting that the company’s different areas of expertise help clients of all kinds achieve their a team approach is taken when addressing business owner business goals. challenges. From left: Connor dunlop, financial advisor; shelby schagrin, investment banking; ed o’neal, retirement plans. “We not only have a very experienced investment banking team, but we have what [Christensen] has: A higher net worth client and executive services team. All of these people involved add value to our clients and their adviser,” he says.

exciting future The future of Benjamin F. Edwards is bright. Edwards says he and his team are continually working to preserve the decades-long tradition of mutual trust and respect the company is built on. “We’re a very forward-looking firm,” he says. “We have the opportunity of a lifetime here to continue a legacy that has stood the test of time and deliver meaningful and informed advice and service to our clients.” Benjamin F. American Red Cross of Greater St. Louis

HEROES BREAKFAST

G

Photos and story by Bryan Schraier

uests recently enjoyed much-needed coffee before the sixth annual Heroes Breakfast held by American Red Cross of Greater St. Louis. That morning at Union Station, nine individuals or groups received awards in these categories: military, nurse, law enforcement, community impact, good Samaritan, emergency medical assistance, disaster relief, firefighter, and the Dr. Charles Drew Blood Services Award. Those individuals and groups worked courageously in ways that epitomized the mission of the Red Cross – to prevent and alleviate human suffering – some performing at great risk to their own lives. Funds raised that morning go toward the Red Cross’ many programs such as blood donation, health and safety, international and disaster services.

It has a lot of meaning for me. The Red Cross means a lot to our company. Our founder, Jack Taylor, really believed in giving back, loved St. Louis, loved the community. With this being their 100th anniversary, we’re so pleased and proud to be a part of all their initiatives and efforts. As a company, we support their annual disaster giving program, which really means we’re getting ahead of those storms. We’re able to provide support for them so that they can help others in times of need.

Roan Mountain Rhododendron Festival takes place June 17 and 18 this year and celebrates the massive natural gardens of pink Catawba rhododendrons on the slopes of the mountain. Pisgah National Forest, on the North

Carolina side, sports massive groves of R. maximum, along with showy native mountain laurel. Bloom dates will vary by elevation, but late spring and early summer should be a gorgeous period to visit these areas.

raveling during the spring makes a great way to enjoy stunning plants that don’t like to grow in Ladue – yet you might ask, “How’s it possible that any plant wouldn’t adore being in a Ladue garden?” Well, one of the largest groups of flowering shrubs, the genus Rhododendron (Latin for “tree rose”), is picky about soil pH, and although it grows beautifully in the Pacific Northwest and the southeastern states along the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean, it doesn’t thrive in our lime-rich soils and during our hot summers. My inspiration for this column comes from the breathtaking display of cut trusses (flower clusters) of evergreen rhododendrons in the competition show of the American Rhododendron Society’s national meeting held a few weeks ago in Eureka, California, home of the giant sequoia and sweet occidental azalea. Rhodies represent a preferred landscape shrub in that climate, where they attain great size. A subgroup of this genus, the ever-popular azaleas, tends to be smaller and may not be evergreen. You may have enjoyed the wonderful, long spring bloom in the Rhododendron Glen at the Missouri Botanical Garden and thought about growing some rhodies of your own – but beware! The garden’s horticultural staff works a lot of magic to make this beautiful display happen, with substantial soil modification and specially acidified irrigation water. Timid or novice gardeners should leave this genus to the pros. Still, if you want to prove me wrong, start by selecting a cold-hardy rhododendron cultivar. Although the bright, cheery florist azaleas aren’t winter-hardy for us, one good native choice would be the deciduous roseshell azalea, R. prinophyllum. Next, select a sheltered, semishaded location where evergreens enjoy protection from drying winter winds. Also note that drainage must be perfect, as rhodies suffer from root rot in heavy clay soils. Dig the largest hole you can, and backfill it with acidic amended soils. Use iron sulfate, peat moss, aged pine bark or composted oak leaves to lower the soil pH. Plant the rootball high, slightly above final grade, and mulch well. Feed your plants only special acidic plant foods made for azaleas, rhodies and hollies. Finally, avoid one common planting mistake: starting small shrubs close to the foundation of a house. Why? Well, over time, some cultivars reach 12 to 15 feet in height and then lean awkwardly away from the wall. If you decided to forgo this challenge, some places you might visit with fabulous rhododendron displays include the Rhododendron Species Botanical Garden in Federal Way, Washington; Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library in Delaware; Callaway Gardens in Georgia; the Royal Horticultural Society Garden Wisley in England; and the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh in Scotland. To see fantastic shows of native rhodies, visit the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee in May or June. The 71st annual

St. Charles-based woodworker Cory Herweck creates furniture with character from sustainable area hardwood.

E

very piece of hardwood furniture that Cory Herweck creates is crafted with purpose. The local artisan, who fell in love with woodworking in middle-school shop class, brought his dream career to fruition in January, launching Cory Herweck Woodworking out of his 100-year-old historic home in downtown St. Charles. After working in local home-improvement stores and lumber yards for several years after college, Herweck recently had been trying his hand at his own woodwork. When he successfully crafted a dining table out of an old wooden barn door and iron piping for a friend’s home in 2014, he knew he’d found his calling. “I love the natural beauty that the wood gives,” Herweck says. “There’s something about the character, when you have six colors in the span of 6 inches … I think of how I can do something different with every slice.” Today, Herweck crafts a mix of rustic-meets-modern furniture and home

accessories, from his most popular pieces – geometric shelves, available in oak, maple, walnut or cherry wood – to custom dining and coffee tables, cabinets and desks, and cutting and serving boards. The St. Charles native is inspired by the unique angles and contemporary look of midcentury modern furniture. “I make midcentury modern furniture, with the twist of using different types of wood than are traditionally used with pieces of this era,” he explains, adding that he typically chooses white oak, red oak, teak, walnut, maple, sycamore and elm to add new flair to the furniture. With each creation, Herweck aims to preserve the story behind the wood, from where it was rooted to how it was used. Each piece he uses is milled at local lumber yards, including sustainable hardwoods from Wunderwoods Custom Hardwoods in St. Charles, where he works part time. “I love tracking down where the wood came from and the story behind it, so it gives the piece history and character,” he notes.

Among the artisan’s recent pieces are a sofa table, triangular shelves and a media cabinet crafted from quarter-sawn red oak harvested from a family friend’s farm in southeast Missouri. He also created a kitchen table from an elm tree felled in Maplewood, a desk and dining table from a fallen walnut tree in St. Charles, and a white oak wet bar, also sourced from St. Charles. “I want my furniture to make people’s homes feel more comfortable,” Herweck says, adding that he’s expanding his woodworking repertoire to a wider range of “homey” accessories, including headboards, dressers and side tables. For a handcrafted custom piece from Herweck, prospective clients can contact him by phone or email or through his website to discuss their vision for the design-and-build process. Herweck collaborates with each customer to get a sense of the piece’s design and purpose, as well as the space it will complement. He then creates a digital design for the client to approve before building the custom item. Every build is different, depending on the type of wood and the design of the piece, according to Herweck. “With the exception of my triangular shelves, each piece is a one-off creation,” he says.

Cory Herweck Woodworking, 314-397-8770, coryherweck.com

Those unique items, all with a different story, give homes character, Herweck notes, adding, “I want people to say my piece fills a purpose in their home.” He also takes the purpose of his pieces a step further by donating 5 percent of their sales to a local or regional urban garden. After work as a Christian missionary exposed Herweck to an urban garden in Memphis, Tennessee, he chose to make easier access to healthy food the philanthropic cause of his woodworking business. Herweck hopes to benefit St. Louis-area sustainable farms, as well as the Memphis urban garden, where discounted organic food is offered to families who live in food deserts. “I want to help people in need who live in food deserts gain access to sustainable food,” he explains. “My woodwork is also sustainable, so it all ties in. “Everything I do is crafted with purpose, whether it’s helping a family who needs better food or people who need a better atmosphere in their homes.”

M . M s. r r Y Elizabeth Burkhardt & David Rosenfeld

ou wouldn’t expect Charles M. Schultz’s classic cartoon strip Peanuts to play an integral role in the spark of a romance, but then again, love turns up in unexpected places. Elizabeth “Libby” Burkhardt and David Rosenfeld met in 2001 while both were participating in Parkway Central Middle School’s production of Snoopy: The Musical – David played the role of Linus, Charlie Brown’s blanket-toting best friend, and Libby played Peppermint Patty, a freckle-faced tomboy. They became fast friends and stayed close throughout high school as they performed alongside one another in West Side Story and Pizzazz, Parkway Central High’s show choir. After college, the friends both headed to the University of Missouri-Columbia, where Libby and David pursued their degrees in education and biological sciences, respectively, escorting each other to various sorority and fraternity events. David will tell you that he knew there was something special about Libby from day one, and over their many years of friendship, they made several unsuccessful attempts to begin dating. It wasn’t until March 2010, after years of friendship blossoming into courtship, that Libby came around, and the couple went on their first date. After five years of dating, David proposed to Libby on July 3, 2015. Libby had come back to St. Louis to spend the Fourth of July with her family, and David, then a medical student, told her he wasn’t able to return home, because he “had to study” (a completely plausible excuse). He surprised her that night as Libby was at the Missouri Botanical Garden with her family for family photos with her siblings, with a carefully rehearsed plan to have Libby led to a bench in a private garden area, where she received a bouquet of roses and a letter from David. As Libby finished the letter, David appeared from behind the bushes and got down on one knee to propose. After a moment to celebrate together, the couple emerged from the garden to find both families outside, with cameras and monogrammed Kleenexes at the ready. The families celebrated the engagement that night at SqWires in Lafayette Square, where David and his mom, Shelley, had decorated the event space with red roses, romantic candles and dozens of photos of the

couple. “It was surely a night to remember,” Libby recalls. The couple both wanted a big wedding, with all of their friends and family there. “The decision to have the wedding in our hometown of St. Louis was easy!” Libby says. They both knew the St. Louis Country Club, with its white stucco, red tile roof and black shutters, surrounded by green polo fields and a world-renowned golf course, would be the perfect backdrop for their one-of-a-kind wedding. The entire wedding weekend in early September 2016 told their love story – they shared the narrative of everything from their first meeting in middle school to their engagement at the Missouri Botanical Garden, exchanged personalized vows and asked many of their friends and family to speak at both the rehearsal dinner and wedding, ending the ceremony with the Jewish tradition of the breaking of glass. The ceremony was led by both Rabbi Amy Feder and Pastor Kevin Cameron to represent both sides of the family. The couple’s vision included a nine-piece band to get their guests dancing, with additional activities – like marshmallow roasting for s’mores – at St. Louis Country Club’s beautiful back patio for nondancers to enjoy the evening under the night sky and charming café lights. Late-night food at the wedding included Imo’s Pizza – her favorite – and Katz’s pastrami sandwiches – his favorite. Custom sugar cookies representing various parts of their story were given out as favors, including, of course, Peppermint Patty and Linus. The most memorable part of the day was a gift from the bride’s dad. “He surprised us with a painter who live-painted the ceremony – guests were able to observe and visit with the painter during cocktail hour, and David and I even got to pick up the paint brush and leave our own mark on the painting,” Libby says. “It’s an amazing keepsake that we will cherish forever.” After four years as Columbia, Missouri, residents, the couple plans to move to Chicago later this month for David’s dermatology residency at Loyola University Medical Center and Libby’s position as director of major gifts at the Lyric Opera of Chicago. They honeymooned in Hawaii.

M . M s. r r B Emily Naegeli & Conner Keefe

oth born and raised in St. Louis, Emily Naegeli and Conner Keefe were introduced by Emily’s good friend from high school, Emily Kossman, who happened to be one of Conner’s neighbors from childhood. Both were headed to Indiana University and were lucky enough to begin their college career knowing they already had a friend on campus. They became close friends and, ultimately, a couple. After college, Conner and Emily moved to Baltimore in April 2014, and one night, while out on a walk with their dog, Jameson, around picturesque Federal Hill Park, Conner got down on one knee next to Jameson and popped the big question. That night, the couple began talking about their wedding day, both immediately agreeing on a winter wedding. “I think ultimately the reason we both wanted winter is because it’s our dog’s favorite season – not surprising, as she looks like a polar bear,” Emily says. As it turns out, one of their favorite parts of their wedding day was taking pictures with Jameson in the snow on the golf course. The couple did most of their planning while living in Baltimore, relying heavily on Cosmopolitan Events to bring their vision to life. Their families also collaborated with the couple heavily on the event. “One night, our family had a cake-tasting party for us and tried upwards of seven different cakes as a group and reported back!” Emily recalls. For their big day in January 2016, the couple wanted a classic feel that was still unique to them – Emily was the fifth generation of her family to be married at St. Ambrose on the Hill in St. Louis, taking the same signature picture Emily’s grandparents and great-grandparents took in front of the church doors. The bride wore a crew neck, double-faced silk gown with subtle cutouts by Rivini, which she happened upon during a trunk show at Fleur de Lis bridal boutique in Clayton. “One of my favorite accessories was my veil, which was cathedral length, with a blusher,” Emily recalls. “When I pulled the blusher down right before I walked down the aisle, I really felt like a bride.” The wedding party was a mix of high-school friends, college friends and family. Bridesmaids carried bright pink bouquets, a colorful contrast to their navy Alfred Sung gowns. “Finding bright pink flowers in

January, especially peonies, was not easy and wouldn’t have been possible without Bloomin’ Buckets,” Emily says. The groomsmen wore Ralph Lauren bow ties in tartan green – the groom’s favorite color – with navy suits and found themselves hitting a snag as they were preparing for the wedding. “Apparently, as they were getting dressed shortly before the wedding, they realized no one knew how to tie them,” Emily says. “After giving up on watching YouTube videos trying to learn, they ended up having to run across the street and have a bridesmaid’s dad, who happened to live across the street, tie them.” The Landolfi Quartet provided both classic and modern music for the ceremony – the bridal party walked down the aisle to “Clair de Lune,” while the bride entered to “Yellow” by Coldplay. Their recessional was to the tune of “Here Comes the Sun” by the Beatles – avid Beatles fans, the couple’s first dance was also a Fab Four hit, “Here, There and Everywhere.” Conner grew up visiting Greenbriar Hills Country Club, which was the venue they chose for their reception. Conner wanted outside space, even with a winter wedding, so finding a way to have a tent and fireplace as part of the reception space was key; the reception was half inside, half outside on a sunny, 47-degree January day, so even with a layer of snow on the ground, the temperature was perfect. The groom works for a wine company, so serving wine that matched the event and paired well with the food was an important part of the evening. “We put a lot of time and thought into those selections and brought in some of our own wine so our guests could experience some of our favorites,” Emily says. For the overall décor, the couple wanted an intimate, winter-lodge feel – a warm, roaring fire met guests as they entered the cocktail hour, and the reception space was candlelit. The head table, with navy- and white-striped tablecloths and bright pink bouquets, was adorned with custom china from St. Louisbased Sasha Nicholas and a porcelain ice bucket the couple had received as bridal shower gifts. “We also had these pieces inscribed with messages from loved ones, so it really meant a lot to have them at the head table,” Emily says. The couple kept their winter theme and honeymooned at the Carriage House in Kohler, Wisconsin. Emily and Conner currently reside in Chicago.

M . M s. r r “W Lauren Herring & Ted Disabato

e owe it all to Cassandra,” is how the couple begins their love story. Lauren Herring and Ted Disabato were introduced by Cassandra Sanford, a mutual friend who initiated an email introduction between the two, and so began their journey together. “Ted is an overachiever – an attorney, an entrepreneur and a proud dad to his little girl, Kennedy. I hope you two will grab a drink or even just coffee. You both are impactful members of our community and, if nothing else, should at least know one another,” Cassandra told Lauren. These were appealing descriptions to Lauren, an accomplished businesswoman herself with a heart of gold. Lauren, chief executive officer of IMPACT Group, a leadership development and career coaching company, and Ted, managing member of TdD Attorneys at Law and broker at TdD Premier Real Estate, shared their first date at Oceano Bistro in Clayton. The couple calls their initial connection “serious interest at first sight,” and after a few glasses of wine and shared appetizers, the couple relocated to 5 Star Burgers for boozy shakes for dessert. After, Ted took Lauren home, but both didn’t want the evening to end – Lauren offered some mint iced tea she had brewed from her garden, and the two sat in Lauren’s backyard, continuing to pique each other’s interest. The evening ended with a hug and a second date set. The story of their proposal was somewhat unconventional. The couple went on a trip to Busch Gardens Tampa Bay (amusement parks are “Ted’s juvenile passion,” according to Lauren), where she lost her diamond stud earring on a roller coaster. Shortly after their trip, the two found themselves at Genovese Jewelers to find a replacement. Lauren found a great deal and upgrade on her earrings, and president Joe Genovese suggested the couple check out “some other merchandise.” Ted jokes

that ring shopping came out of left field for him; Lauren says that based on previous conversations, it was fair game. In the meantime, the couple booked a church and venue, and Lauren found a dress – and 2½ months later, they walked out of Genovese Jewelers with a forever ring. Ted proposed to Lauren with a picturesque backdrop while on a mountain hike during a vacation to Lake Tahoe. From the beginning, the couple made their wedding a family affair – sister-in-law Kate Disabato designed and oversaw all the invitations and paper products for the big day. Kennedy’s inclusion in the ceremony was also important to the couple – she was a flower girl, and Lauren and Ted included a special rainbow cake for her at the reception. “Overall, I think the most important aspect of our vision for the day was celebrating friends and family, so this really guided all our decisions,” Lauren says. Wedding planning was a collaborative project, with both Lauren and Ted wanting to center the ceremony around their mutual commitment to God. Having the Rev. Gary Braun from the Washington University Catholic Student Center officiate their ecumenical ceremony was also very special to the couple. “The fact that Ted was willing to write our own vows, as I wanted, goes to show how much he loves me,” Lauren recalls. For the reception at the Missouri Athletic Club, Lauren enlisted local band Push the Limit to set the elegant, fun vibe. “I think the fact that they rotated and never stopped playing is really cool,” Ted says. With more than 350 guests, the couple still wanted to maintain a sense of intimacy. “We wanted our guests to feel the night was about them enjoying just as much as we were,” Lauren says. After a honeymoon on Molokai and the Big Island in Hawaii, the couple has made their home in Clayton.

M . M s. r r N Nicholle Turano & Arthur Harmon

icholle (Nicki) Turano and Arthur Harmon were both resident assistants for their now-alma mater, Southwest Baptist University (SBU) in Bolivar, Missouri. It was the beginning of Nicki’s junior year – and Arthur’s senior year – and she had been reassigned to a new dorm, which meant new co-workers. On move-in day, she was introduced to Arthur, her new colleague, and was instantaneously struck. A few weeks later, they happened upon each other at a student ministry leaders meeting, and sparks flew the entire weekend. “From there,” Nicki says, “the rest was history.” Just over a year later, Arthur began scheming for his proposal to Nicki. He had left her waiting for a while – after talking to Nicki’s dad to ask for her hand, which Nicki knew had taken place, he let several months slip by with formal dates and landmark trips that would have been ideal. “I was determined to take my time,” Arthur says. It was the week before Valentine’s Day when his plans began to come together. Nicki met Arthur at an old swing on SBU’s campus that held great significance to the couple – it was a meaningful meeting point for their relationship – but at one point along the way, in the swing’s disrepair, SBU decided to toss it. Arthur’s friend found the discarded swing and held on to it, just in case – and the dilapidated symbol of their early relationship had its comeback on the night Arthur proposed, playing a song on his guitar that they would later have their first dance to as husband and wife. After the proposal, their friends gathered to celebrate with the couple. “The room was filled with the people who had loved us the best as a couple,” Arthur recalls.

“Walking into the room, you could feel their joy for us.” For their big day, the couple wanted to be mindful of their guests. “Arthur and I both have a heart to practice hospitality well, from beginning to end,” Nicki says. “We wanted to feed them good food, good drinks and good music – after all, a wedding is a celebration! And we truly believe we wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for each of them.” The ceremony was held in Graham Chapel at Washington University in St. Louis this January. “Because the chapel is already so beautiful, it was an easy first choice,” Nicki says. Nicki also envisioned an ambiance inspired by childhood travels to Italy with her parents. “I was pretty young when I went, so I can’t recall too many historical facts, but what I do remember – dinner!” Nicki says. “I remember the experience that each night brought. It wasn’t just about the food – although amazing – it was the dimmed lighting, the flowers in the centerpieces, the candlesticks and tea lights, the place settings, the music. It was all so romantic.” The reception was held at Neo on Locust, with a color palette of Marsala red and gold creating a dreamy winter vibe, with thoughtful and elegant table settings under the warm glow of a canopy of string lights throughout the entire event space. The couple enjoyed a relaxing honeymoon in Kauai, Hawaii – although the bride had grown up traveling, it was the groom’s first trip to an ocean. Nicki and Arthur currently reside in Bolivar, where they both work at their alma mater – Arthur as a resident director and graduate student, and Nicki as an admissions counselor.

M . M s. r r M Sydney Levinson & Matt Stein

att Stein and Sydney Levinson’s first encounter had a fairly daunting audience. “We were introduced by Matt’s sister,” Sydney recalls. “Our first meeting was at a dinner attended by both our families [in Los Angeles], where everyone knew it was a potential setup; however, we barely spoke more than a few sentences.” Understandably so – it’s hard to get to know someone in a pressure cooker. Geography was another issue. Matt lived in San Francisco, and Sydney lived in New York City, and neither was interested in a long-distance relationship. Then a Facebook friend request led to exchanging phone numbers, and after many FaceTime calls, Matt booked a trip to NYC two months after the couple’s initial meeting. Within a week, he was back again, after convincing his boss that he had important “business” in New York, and the young romance blossomed. Sydney and Matt’s engagement took place in San Francisco, where Matt arranged for Sydney to meet him at their favorite neighborhood landmark, the Palace of Fine Arts. There she found him down on one knee, asking for her hand in marriage. The location, with its stunning rotunda and sweeping pillars reflected in the lagoon, is also a popular tourist destination, so the couple’s engagement was witnessed by many convivial strangers. The two of them then walked to dinner, where Sydney got her second surprise of the night – both sets of parents had flown from St. Louis and Los Angeles to celebrate with the newly betrothed couple. “It was a very memorable weekend spent together with our families, filled with much love and laughter,” Sydney says. Sydney and Matt worked with Simcha Lourie of Simcha’s Events to create the

perfect blend of their two visions for their wedding day, in the bride’s hometown of St. Louis. “Matt’s vision was a room filled with our families, friends and a band – which was easy to achieve!” Sydney says. Her vision was warmth and love – she wanted something different, and having inherited her mom’s artistic creativity, she worked closely with Lourie to bring her unique vision to life. “Simcha was able to execute on our inspiration and out-of-the-box ideas,” Sydney says. “We envisioned bright colors in the ceremony and neutrals in the reception.” The couple’s ceremony last September, held at Meadowbrook Country Club in Ballwin, was striking, with an aisle thickly covered in bright flower petals. Sydney and Matt also incorporated the traditions of their faith in a creative way. “Rather than having a traditional chuppah, we wanted to find something unique,” Sydney says. “We had been to a wedding in Israel where the chuppah was carried in by loved ones – we thought it was so special and meaningful, and it truly symbolized that we would have an open house and the love and support of our family and friends as we entered into marriage.” For the reception, also held at Meadowbrook Country Club, Sydney wanted a contrast to the brightness of their ceremony and brought A Midsummer Night’s Dream-inspired color palette of silver, gold and cream-toned vision to life, complete with tall tree centerpieces, tabletop terrariums, hanging vines and plenty of candles – both set in place and suspended from greenery installations – to set the mood. The couple spent a memorable two-week honeymoon traveling through Japan. Sydney and Matt currently live in San Francisco.

M . M s. r r M Maggie McCarthy & Andrew Desloge

aggie McCarthy and Andrew Desloge were having separate nights out with friends at Planter’s House in Lafayette Square in the spring of 2014 when Andrew approached Maggie at the bar. The two hit it off, and Andrew asked for Maggie’s number. The next day, they had their first date at Pastaria. “I guess you could say the first date went well, considering he asked me out the next two nights,” Maggie recalls. The week before Thanksgiving 2015, Andrew took Maggie to Seaside, Florida, where he had grown up vacationing as a boy. “I had never been to Seaside before, but it was one of Andrew’s favorite spots,” Maggie says. She loved the charm of the town and was having so much fun that engagement didn’t even cross her mind. Under the guise of grabbing some sunset drinks with friends of Andrew’s family, Andrew shared what was in his heart with Maggie before getting down on one knee and proposing in front of a beachside pavilion; he even hired a photographer to sneak professional shots of the couple. “It was perfect in every way for both of us!” Maggie says. “And now Seaside is certainly a place we visit often and cherish forever!” The ring was purchased from Kuzelman Brothers, and Maggie describes it as “everything and more I could have dreamed of.” Maggie and Andrew, both very detail-oriented, made sure every element of their wedding was chosen with careful consideration, from the invitations to the late-night eats for guests. Invitations were by Poeme in Cincinnati, tying in the blush-pink-and-gold color palette of the day. The wedding weekend kicked off with a rehearsal dinner at St. Louis Country Club hosted by Andrew’s parents, Marybeth and Allan Desloge. The wedding – hosted by Maggie’s parents, Cathy and Jim McCarthy – took place at the Shrine of St. Joseph, with both Maggie and Andrew desiring a ceremony that focused on the tradition and

faith of the Catholic church. The Rev. Jack Siefert from the couple’s parish was chosen to say the Mass. “He truly made the ceremony so special,” Maggie says. Music for the Mass was also very important to the couple. “We were so blessed to work with Dee at Rosewood Ensemble,” Maggie recalls. “They’re so talented, and the music during our ceremony took our breath away.” Staying true to Maggie’s Irish roots, bagpipe players escorted the couple out of the church. The bride wore an Amsale gown from Belle Vie Couture in Chicago and carried a boutique with two lockets tucked in the flowers that held photos of her parents’ wedding, plus both sets of grandparents on their wedding days. She also wore a ring that belonged to Andrew’s late grandmother, Elizabeth Hoey. The groom wore Lucchese crocodile tail boots, which were a wedding gift from the bride. Maggie and Andrew chose The Coronado as an elegant venue for the modern storybook romance theme for their reception, with Festive Couture Floral creating a one-of-a-kind ambiance with white, champagne, ivory and coral/blush roses; white orchids; white and green hydrangeas; bells of Ireland; and coral hypericum. “We still get compliments on our flowers to this day,” Maggie says. Votives, floating candles and additional pin lighting helped set a dreamy scene. The Downtown Band, a 12-piece ensemble from Nashville, Tennessee, had every guest on the dance floor, and photography was done by Mike Cassimatis. “Mike loves detail just as we do, and we just could not be more pleased with his work – for any future photography, he will be the only person we call!” Maggie says. The couple took a “mini-moon” in South Haven, Michigan, for quick getaway after the wedding, waiting until early December before heading to the Round Hill Resort on Montego Bay, Jamaica. They recently sold their charming house in Brentwood and will be moving to their new home in Warson Woods later this month.

edding bells fill the air! With summer fast approaching, wedding season is mere weeks away. Are your rings ready? Whether you’re finalizing details for your own upcoming nuptials, navigating the early stages of planning your dream wedding or thinking of upgrading your existing wedding ring, LN has compiled the latest wedding ring trends from local jewelry experts to make sure your ring is as stylish as it is sparkly.

Stackable RingS

Why wear one or two rings when you can wear an entire stack? “We are seeing brides wear simple solitaire engagement rings paired with a narrow diamond wedding band, adding a variety of unique bands to be collected throughout life together,” says Anne M. Pokoski, certified gemologist appraiser and personal jeweler with Elleard Heffern Fine Jewelers in Clayton, listing anniversaries, significant birthdays or the birth of a child as examples. The stacking-bands trend is echoed by Julie Ettinger, owner of YLANG YLANG in Ladue, who explains this can be a great time to add in new metals for a trendier look. Yellow gold is here to stay, and rose gold may be having its moment, but in lieu of getting an entire engagement ring in one color, brides can test the trendy waters with thin stacking bands in different metals. Not only is it a popular pick, but also it creates a one-of-a-kind look for the wearer – an important option for modern brides. “People love that we have engagement rings nobody else has,” Ettinger says, noting the store’s exclusives with lines Erica Courtney and Single Stone. “I think our bridal [offerings are] really building because we offer those exclusive, can’t-find-them-anywhere-else settings.” She also mentions oval diamonds as recently increasing in popularity.

Simple iS key For those less interested in the multi-ring look, something simpler may be a better fit. “The current trends in engagement rings are more simple styles,” says Joe Genovese, president of Genovese Jewelers in St. Louis, “from the basic plain solitaire setting to very thin rings with small diamonds down each side. The halo settings are still very strong – but not the really elaborate ones.” Genovese explains he isn’t a huge fan of trendy designs, noting that in his experience, women tend to replace their settings in about 10 years; resetting can make things more modern and current. “It is a shame to spend the money on a ring that can go out of style in a year or two,” he says. “When it comes to trendy, stick with the more fun, everyday fashion pieces.”

gRoom optionS Brides aren’t the only ones looking for rings – each groom needs something special, as well. By and large, the experts say the look for grooms is classic and simple. “The classic plain platinum or 18-karat yellow gold band is still the most popular request at our store, but we are recently finding that men aren’t afraid to be a little more fashion-forward and are looking at rings with contemporary details or finishes,” Pokoski says. Ettinger says that grooms today are looking for “simple and elegant [rings] with a little twist,” noting a Single Stone design that is simple from the top with a bit of pizazz hidden on the side. Details like engraving can add a hint of flair without being overly decorative.

Genovese Jewelers

cReative and cuStom When the right details cannot be found, it might be time to turn to custom. All three jewelers note custom rings as being one of the most exciting options available to brides and grooms, allowing lovebirds the chance to create rings that are unique to them. “Custom wedding jewelry today ranges from vintage styles that can incorporate family diamonds or gemstones to contemporary pieces that exude the look of the most fashion-forward pieces from Europe,” Pokoski says. “That’s the beauty of custom design – it gives the client complete freedom to create exactly what [he or] she wants.” And after all, isn’t that one of the most important features of a wedding? Three local pasTry chefs share This year’s popular Trends in wedding cakes.

62

T

he discerning bride this season may want to be festooned with flowers, to be draped in gold and silver, to sport intricate patterns or simply to go naked – for her wedding cake. These are all current trends for the pastry centerpieces, and the designs are as diverse and individual as the wedding couples themselves. “I think overall, people are getting more comfortable with stepping outside of the box,” says Katie Veile, owner of Kaked by Katie. “I am seeing less traditional all-white wedding cakes, which will always remain timeless.” Couples working with Veile to plan their wedding cakes are requesting a number of creative options, she says. Cakes featuring metallics, detailed lace designs, ruffles, texturized surfaces, fresh flowers, sugar flowers and bold colors are among recent orders for the St. Louis-based company. “I hope to see more royal icing work and big floral designs in 2017,” she adds. The biggest trend seen by Lia Weber, owner of Made. By Lia and winner of TLC’s Next Great Baker Season 4, is the “naked cake.” Weber began designing and making naked cakes in 2015, and the response has been phenomenal. “Brides are starting to want something more simple, classy and elegant, and that’s exactly what a naked cake is,” she says. “You can dress it up or dress it down to fit in with any theme or venue.” Naked cakes feature layers of cake with a thin layer of icing. “My signature is to have more of a sheer look, with just some cake peeping through, which adds a little more uniqueness to the design.” Executive pastry chef Eric Phillips at The Chase Park Plaza agrees that simplicity is a current trend among soon-to-wed couples. “I don’t see as much fondant and royal icing as I did in the past,” he says. “I think flavor is more of a concern than the appearance now.” Phillips enjoys creating chocolate flowers or cake toppers for a unique presentation. While wedding cakes are still the centerpiece of a wedding banquet, groom’s cakes continue to appear on some dessert tables. “I honestly would say about 40 percent of my clients opt to have a groom’s cake,” Veile says. “Some have the cake for the rehearsal dinner, which I believe to be genius. Since most groom’s cakes tend to not ‘fit in’ with the entire vibe of the wedding, having it at the rehearsal makes perfect sense.” She notes that groom’s cakes represent the groom’s interests and personality. They can include college mascot motifs, craft beer-infused flavors and sports themes. “Maybe he’s a chocolate lover – drip cakes (where chocolate ganache covers the top and drips artfully down the sides) are beautiful and garnished with all his favorite candies,” she says. Whether you love traditional, unusual or naked designs, bakers and pastry chefs agree that the cake should reflect the wedding couple’s style and preferences. “I think the most important thing when researching wedding-cake trends is to stay up on the current and future trends,” Weber says. “Before going to a cake tasting, do some research and bring pictures of cakes and ideas you like. Then let the cake artist use their creativity to design a cake specifically for you.” Made. By Lia, 314-518-3565, madebylia.com Kaked by Katie, kakedbykatie.com The Chase Park Plaza, 212 N. eddings express a couple’s tastes and personalities, and nowhere is this more evident than in the current trend of mobile wedding services. Trucks and trailers offer everything from full-service bars and catering to officiants themselves arriving in completely mobile ceremony venues, proving that weddings can happen almost anywhere these days. Before the ceremony, the Sav MakeUp Rolling MakeUp & Skincare Studio might be parked outside the wedding venue, the bride’s home or anyplace else the wedding party wants to prep for photos in the St. Louis area and even beyond, if requested. The vintage 1968 Skyline Nomad trailer contains a trendy hair and makeup studio complete with a bathroom and running water. “We can pull it anywhere that you need us to, so it can be part of not just the wedding itself but [also] all the other pieces that go along with the wedding,” says Denise Hopkins, who handles marketing for the studio and whose daughter, Savanna, is the professional hair and makeup artist who makes wedding parties look their best. Engagement and wedding photo shoots on location are becoming the norm as more couples opt to have pictures taken at natural sites instead of in

studios, she adds. Most wedding parties require about two to four hours to prepare, and Savanna works with two assistants for larger groups. The benefit is that there’s no mess in the bride’s home or other preparation site as people come and go from the mobile studio, which can be parked right outside the residence. “We have a little outdoor space that we put together, too, so people can hang out, and it’s a social/ conversation area,” Hopkins adds. After the ceremony, it’s time to celebrate, and The Wandering Sidecar Bar Co. is ready to pull up and help. If you love the vintage trailer/makeup studio, you’ll also love Ruthie, the 1960 Avalon trailer, and Birdie, the 1967 Holi horse trailer. Both have been completely transformed into one-of-a-kind mobile bars. In November 2015, Tiffany Unger had her now 10-month-old twin boys and was looking for options for home-based income streams. “I wracked my brain for months, and one day while flipping through a magazine, I saw a short editorial on a camper bar in California,” she says. “It struck me like a bolt of lightning, and I just knew I had to do this.” After outfitting Ruthie for the job, The Wandering Sidecar Bar Co. launched in June 2016, with Birdie making its debut in September

2016. Two more unique mobile bars will soon join Ruthie and Birdie: Big Red, a 1969 Chevy grain truck that will include sinks, refrigeration and draft taps, and Chief, a 1957 truck bed bar. “We not only offer a really unique bar service, but [it’s] also at a fraction of the cost of alcohol packages,” Unger says. “When we arrive, we take over all aspects of the bar. We provide the bar, experienced and professional staff, and everything that you need including bar tools, ice, mixers, garnishes and paper goods. Our clients provide the alcohol, which can save them an enormous amount of money over liquor packages with huge upcharges.” Although the mobile bars are mostly used for outdoor events, Unger says they are happy to bring the trucks inside if possible. Wedding couples who want a fun food-truck atmosphere for wedding desserts – while also helping people in need – might consider Destination Desserts. Although it’s not the only bakery-goods food truck catering to weddings and many other event types, it is the only one affiliated with the nonprofit Center for Head Injury Services (CHIS) in St. Louis. “We started thinking about the concept in 2008, when the recession hit, and we couldn’t find any jobs for our folks with disabilities,” says Destination Desserts

savanna hopkins

sav makeup trailer

director Denise Samuels. “After much research and time, we decided on a food truck – a rolling billboard for what we were trying to do.” The brightly colored Destination Desserts truck hit the streets in May 2013. “We offer everything from signature cupcakes to gooey butter cake, fresh strawberry shortcake, ice cream sundae bars, and we’ve done pies, also,” Samuels says. “We’ve had couples who want to serve their guests off the truck, so they make sure they [get to] see everyone. Anything goes.” And in the process, CHIS clients bake, decorate and learn other skills needed to obtain work in commercial kitchens. All proceeds support the CHIS. Wedding couples can plan specific menus, and Samuels notes that wedding requests have been steadily increasing. “Destination Desserts’ main focus is a great product – more than 61 flavors of cupcakes alone – but secondly, we just want to help nice people find a great purpose,” Samuels notes. Eyelash Care

‌E

By Kimmie Gotch

very lady loves bold, full, long eyelashes, but not everyone can afford extensions. So, ladies, to make your natural lashes long, strong and healthy, consider these six tips, reflecting that the better you care for those lashes, the lovelier they’ll look: Tip 1:  Remove all eye makeup before bed. Like shedding other cosmetics at day’s end to foster skin care, removing all eye makeup, no matter how pesky, before retiring for the night ranks as crucial. Your lashes need to breathe, just like your skin, so do them and yourself a favor by putting the kibosh on the kohl!

glue on your real lashes, and take care when removing the fakes at the end of the day.

Leave your lashes alone as much as possible, especially when they’re sporting mascara.

Tip 2:  Use a lash serum. Unhappy with the length of your natural lashes? If so, before bed, treat your cleansed lashes with a lash serum, which will then work its magic while you sleep. Consistent use of such a serum should improve the length of your natural lashes.

Tip 4:  Get a lash tint. Ladies unhappy with the color of their lashes should try a lash tint, which can work wonders on blondes or anyone with light-colored lashes. Such tints involve dyeing lashes darker, which makes them look much thicker and longer.

Tip 3:  Avoid wearing fake lashes. Strip lashes can damage your natural ones, so avoid wearing them. If you must resort to the things, though, avoid getting

Tip 5:  Avoid picking at your lashes. This should seem obvious – if you’re trying to maintain long, healthy lashes, then you oughtn’t pick at them or uproot them.

Tip 6:  Find a volumizing and lengthening mascara. One last tip. Find a mascara that enhances your natural lashes to make them look long and thick. Choose a mascara recommended for lengthening, thickening or volumizing lashes. OK, ladies! Taking those six tips should help you achieve lashes flawless enough to make people wonder if you’re wearing fakes – or if you’re just naturally blessed.

Strong Communities Need Trained Professionals

Specialized mortgage solutions for doctors, lawyers, and CPA’s Luckily, there are knowledgeable professionals skilled in their craft helping us to maintain our daily, civilized lives. Whether it’s an attorney, a doctor, or a Certified Professional Accountant (CPA), the need for these trained professionals in our society ensures we have the expertise necessary whenever the need arises.

(636) 274-1378

That’s why we strive to provide solutions such as First Bank’s Professionals Program that help to make the lives of these professionals just a little easier. “I have a great friend that’s an attorney. I had closed on their purchase loan at a previous bank and they were required to have mortgage insurance, said Dan Kraus, First Bank Home Loan Consultant. “When I moved to First Bank, I explained all of the benefits of the program with him. After providing him with all of his options, First Bank’s Professional Program ended up saving him roughly $350 per month in a lower interest rate and no private mortgage insurance (PMI). Kraus continued to say the primary advantages of our Professionals Program are a lower interest rate and, even with minimal equity in their home, the homeowner will still not pay monthly PMI. Not only will doctors, attorneys and CPA’s enjoy cost savings, but they’ll also find this specialized program offers loan amounts up to $750,000 and higher loan to values. Plus, with a low down payment requirement for professionals just starting out, you may purchase a home now instead of renting and waiting to save up for a down payment. “A big hurdle for young professionals just starting out, is often the down payment, said Kraus. “Unless you have money saved or will be receiving a gift from a relative, buying a house sometimes is put on hold. First Bank’s Professional Program allows young professionals to get into a house now with low down payments. With rising interest rates, monthly payments on a home loan may be lower than what they will be in a year when you have saved enough money for a down payment. Ask your First Bank Mortgage home loan consultant about the Mortgage Professionals Program for Doctors, Attorneys, and CPA’s. Dan Kraus, Home Loan Consultant First Bank Mortgage Dan Kraus brings 23 years of experience to the mortgage services industry industry. Dan can reached at 314-205-3188 or you can email him at Dan.Kraus@fbol.com.

CLARK

hen I went to interview Build-A-Bear founder Maxine Clark, she opened her arms to give me a hug instead of a handshake. “I’m a teddy bear person – I give hugs” she said with a smile. Clark made a fortune and earned universal acclaim as an entrepreneur in the teddy bear business, and at a diminutive 4 feet 10 inches tall, she almost comes across as a real-life teddy bear herself – although she talks a lot faster than any stuffed animal I’ve ever encountered. Clark retired from her role as CEO of Build-A-Bear in 2013, but she immediately went to work harnessing her boundless energy and ideas to benefit the kids who literally helped build her empire one bear at a time. “Children were our business – they came and gave us their money and their parents’ money to make wonderful teddy bears who would be their friends forever,” Clark says. “The best thing we can do with that money is to reinvest it back into children – and their children and grandchildren in the future.” Clark believes the best way to help kids is to make education better and create educational opportunities in St. Louis. Those are the primary objectives of the Clark-Fox and Build-A-Bear Foundations. Along with her husband, Bob Fox, the foundations have already helped change the St. Louis education landscape. Among their biggest successes is the launching of the KIPP (Knowledge Is Power Program) Charter Schools in St. Louis. There are two elementary KIPP schools and two middle schools, and this fall, KIPP St. Louis High School will welcome its first freshman class. As a public charter school, KIPP St. Louis High School will operate like a private college prep school. Clark says the philosophy she encourages at the KIPP schools is the same that made her a success in business. “Every single teacher is an entrepreneur, teaching a unique mix of children. Their business is educating our children,” Clark says. “Nobody wants to think about it as a business, but it’s the business of teaching kids to love learning.” Clark got her love for learning and compassion from her mother, Anne, who was a traveling secretary for First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and later opened a school for children with Down syndrome. Clark says she never really thought about being a CEO, because she wanted to be a civil rights attorney or anything that “women didn’t do.” She ended up at The May Department Stores Co. and moved to St. Louis in 1976 as the top assistant to CEO David Farrell. After leaving May, Clark saw a trend in retailing and took a chance on the Build-A-Bear concept that obviously worked out pretty well. “One thing I have is chutzpah – it’s the guts to ask the question, to do something that nobody else would,” Clark says. “My strength is that I know what I don’t know, and I’m always trying to figure it out.” That kind of boldness and vision is exactly what a lot of people think the education system needs. Clark started a website and search engine called Blueprint 4 Summer STL. It helps parents find camps and education programs to keep kids engaged when the school year ends. Her next project looks to be the biggest and most challenging so far; she calls it the Delmar Devine. The name is a play on the local term “Delmar divide,” the line of demarcation that separates the predominantly white and more prosperous side of St. Louis from the North Side, where the population is nearly all African-American. The Delmar Devine project includes the transformation of the long-shuttered St. Luke’s Hospital into what Clark calls a “cortex” center with office space for nonprofits, foundations and community support organizations. It will also include

It’s another big entrepreneurial shot that Clark believes will pay off for the city and the people who need it the most. “There are so many young people with so much talent that we shouldn’t be in this funk,” Clark says. “We should be blossoming and blooming, white, black, Hispanic, Bosnian – they are here in St. Louis, and we’re chasing them away rather than encouraging them to stay.” Whatever the future holds, Clark has a knack for getting things done, and it always starts with a hug.

Hyken’s HOMEWORK Let’s Move!

‌T

he U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention identify one-third of all American teenagers as overweight and 17 percent as obese. Why? Well, today’s youth eat too much and exercise too little. Also, unfortunately, these teens more likely suffer from anxiety and depression than do kids who gravitate toward nutritious snacks and engage in frequent physical activity. Moreover, a recent article in the Journal of Family Medicine and Primary Care reports conclusive evidence of a relationship among eating issues, physical activity and mental health. Nutritious food choices and moderate amounts of activity, it appears, can prevent teenage mood disorders. Of course a good diet can improve a child’s overall health – parents have known that for decades! Nutritious meals lay a foundation for a healthy lifestyle that boosts the immune system, regulates weight and prevents disease. Exercise, however,

can have an immediate impact on any adolescent’s mood. A mild amount will send the neurotransmitter dopamine through the body, turning even the most angst-ridden teen a bit more joyful. Taking that activity outside can further boost mood because sunlight, which is full of vitamin D, acts as a natural antidepressant. Many teens, unfortunately, feel they lack the time to exercise because they’re doing homework, working part-time jobs and socializing with friends. Some also think they must engage in a heart-pumping sport to net any gains. But that’s not the case. Any activity that encourages a child to move benefits the body and the brain alike. A brisk walk with the family dog or a few minutes of hoops before dinner can make a great difference. The key to exercise involves regularity. Teens also need to be educated on the virtues of physical activity. Although exercise builds muscle, more important, it nicely relieves stress. A run around

By Dr. Russell Hyken the block or a game of tennis can really brighten a bad day. Exercise also customarily serves as a natural relaxant. Sleep comes easily a few hours after gym-time, as the body cools and the day’s tension wanes. Less stress and better sleep make a winning combination that even a cranky teen will embrace. Given the hectic nature of family life, creating an environment where teens value exercise requires determination, planning and encouragement – but creating a healthy home remains worth the effort. As kids enter adulthood, they continue the habits they developed earlier in life, and fit kids turn into fit adults who are confident, resilient and successful.

Finding Its FlagshIp

T

he year 2017 belongs to something of a golden era for potential automotive buyers. Quality choices abound, and in many ways, making a poor choice has grown more difficult than making a good one. Family sedans offer the horsepower and acceleration of supercars from just two decades ago; manufacturing techniques have advanced greatly, so almost every new car gives a “bank vault” feel; and the rate of tech growth has fully entered the ski-ramp part of an exponential curve. In truth, buyers who just want a nice car could almost write all their options on a wall and blindly throw darts – they’d be fine. But we don’t review cars to summarize with simply “Yep, it’s nice.” Even in this golden age, real differences exist, where choosy buyers will still have reason to be choosy. And with a segment as diverse as the three-row SUV offerings, some cream almost certainly will rise to the top. Given such fierce competition, lines between mainstream and luxury have blurred. Features previously reserved for the mortgagelike car-payment brands have become available in places you wouldn’t expect them, forcing some to wonder how much worth that German badge really has. Mazda’s all-new CX-9 numbers among those examples that pointedly ask, “Do I really need to pay more?” Most manufacturers, even mainstream ones, build a flagship vehicle to

generate buzz and to permit engineers to pat one another on the back about what they’ve accomplished. But Mazda, which arguably has some of the cleverest engineers in the biz, hasn’t had a flagship car in decades. So in a way, this three-row people-hauler ranks as its flagship – and it shows. Inside, Mazda has built what’s without a doubt the most luxurious vehicle in its history. The rosewood trim looks rich and real, unlike some faux-wood plastic; also, doors close with a solid, satisfying whunk, and nappa-lined seats feel just right. Automotively astute readers will remember the Ford and Mazda partnership from the ’90s and 2000s, with the outgoing CX-9 being one of the last vestiges of that partnership. That CX-9 shared a chassis with the Ford Flex and was long overdue for replacement. With that partnership ended, this new CX-9 has become 100 percent Mazda. Every new Mazda now bears a Skyactiv badge on back; Skyactiv could be thought of as an idea, resulting in a bucket of technologies, all revolving around optimizing efficiency. Under the hood, a turbocharged 2½-liter engine produces 250 horsepower and 310 torque all the way down to 2,000 rpm. Those numbers meet or beat the larger (and thirstier) V-6 engines of competitors. With weight the enemy of economy, Mazda has managed to shave more than 250 pounds from the new CX-9, which still remains larger in

PRICE AS TESTED: $45,255 LOANER FROM: Bommarito Mazda West County bommaritomazdawest.com every dimension. And Skyactiv gets down to the nitty-gritty, too: Details as seemingly slight as reducing transmission frictional losses and tucking all underpinnings into the floorpan for smoother airflow add together for noticeable improvements. Instead of building a flashy six-figure flagship car, Mazda’s engineers flexed cerebral muscle. Behind the wheel, this new Mazda leaves two lasting impressions. The first lasting impression, car lovers likely will expect from Mazda, with the CX-9 (like everything in the company’s lineup) undoubtedly more fun to drive than its competitors. Many large SUVs give a feeling of not having feet under you when cornering aggressively, like standing on a 30-foot ladder in a windstorm. The CX-9 still feels big, but instead of feeling as if it might topple over in corners, it responds surefootedly. No, driving a people-hauler doesn’t have to be emotionally numbing. The second lasting impression, less expected from Mazda, involves quiet solitude. Blindfolded passengers could easily be convinced they’re riding in a Lexus or an Audi. This type of comfort typically comes at the expense of driving satisfaction, and Mazda’s ability to offer both makes the CX-9 all the more impressive. So yes, the CX-9 ranks as one of the best three-row SUVs at its price point, if not in the entire segment. Still, it’s not perfect. We get spoiled amazingly fast, and although it might sound like a small

thing, I’d appreciate a heated steering wheel. Also, the SUV’s infotainment gets the job done but feels a bit rudimentary in doing so. Under fullthrottle acceleration, moreover, the capable powerplant loses a smidge of its composure and brings some torque-steer with it. And even though it would compromise chassis rigidity, I want a much larger, panoramic sunroof, darn it. That said, the rate of improvement in modern automobiles remains astounding. As mentioned, it’s become tougher to make a bad buying decision than a good one, and the Mazda CX-9 clearly seems a very good decision indeed. Much as the Volvo XC90 shines a bit brighter than its competition, so does this Mazda. Its interior’s a bit more luxurious and refined, with road noise a smidge lower; exterior styling, meanwhile, looks just a dab edgier, and driving dynamics turn that SUV frown upside down. Add all these small victories together, and you total what feels like a clearcut win. Forget the badge – the Mazda CX-9 delivers the experience and feel without a sticker price to match. ate last year, the area’s second Global Quesadilla Company opened in Creve Coeur, offering quesadillas, wraps, salads and nachos with a variety of internationally inspired toppings and fillings. Owner and St. Louis native Ben Reeder originated the concept in 2004 with the launch in University City of Casa Dilla, which shuttered in 2008. The following year, though, the family-owned business reopened in Town and Country as the first location of Global Quesadilla Company. “We take bold flavor concepts from all over the world that people seem to like and work them into quesadillas with cheese,” Reeder says. “We have Italian,

American, Mexican and Asian flavors along with barbecue and more.” The nearly 3,000-square-foot space seats roughly 80, which nearly doubles the capacity of the Town and Country storefront. Its simple interior design features polished wood, a skyline silhouette of St. Louis, a row of booths, four-tops and pub seats highlighting the logo’s red-and-black color scheme. At Global Quesadilla Company, the namesake products arrive as 15-inch grilled flour tortillas. All flavor combinations can be made into any of the available mediums on hand. “Everything we do, we try to make big. We take tremendous pride in our product,” Reeder says. “We

want people to say, ‘Wow!’ when they get their food. When they taste it and it’s good, we feel like we’ve done our job.” The most popular option on the menu, which generally hews to geographic names for items, is the Buffalo: Buffalo sauce, grilled chicken, bacon, cheddar and Monterey Jack – available as a quesadilla or wrap. Another highlight, the St. Louis, features Parmesantomato sauce, pepperoni, Italian sausage, Provel and mozzarella. A Thai peanut quesadilla, meanwhile, features grilled chicken, peppers, carrots, green onions and mozzarella. Massive plates of nachos (“’Chos”) are available in options including the Buffalo as well as the

Mexico City with pico de gallo, grilled chicken, taco beef or steak, shredded lettuce and fivecheese queso. Salads include selections such as a Greek option with black olives, tomatoes, red onions, cucumbers, peperoncini, feta and Greek dressing. Last but not least, a kids’ menu features quesadillas and “pizzadillas.” So all things considered, Global Quesadilla Company would make a hunger-satisfying stop on the road to New Jewish Theatre’s 4000 Miles.

‌Story:  Vera is awakened late one night by a knock at her Greenwich Village apartment door. It’s her 21-year-old grandson, Leo, anything but fresh after a cross-country bicycling adventure from Seattle. While she scurries to find him food and bedding, they catch up haphazardly on the lives of their relatives. Communication isn’t easy, both because 91-year-old Vera often doesn’t wear her hearing aid and because Leo is abrupt and rather impulsive in his thoughts and behavior. Over the next few weeks, the two left-leaning political activists learn to enjoy their badinage as well as reveal their shortcomings. Leo is grieving the accidental death of his cycling pal, Micah, as well as reacting against the frequent need for reassurance about his safety by his more conservative mother, Jane, back home in St. Paul, Minnesota. There’s also the matter of his relationship with his adopted sister, Lily, a little too close for the comfort of either Jane or Vera. Leo hopes to reconnect with his former girlfriend Becca while in New York, but Becca has ambitious plans that don’t include him. Still, she has feelings for Leo that rise to the surface in a contentious meeting at Vera’s apartment. Vera is an unrepentant communist knocked down by the deaths of too many friends, while Leo is a strongwilled hippie raging against the injustices of life. In their time together, they learn more about each other and what bonds them. Highlights:  New Jewish Theatre brings down the curtain on its 20th season with a tenderly crafted interpretation of Amy Herzog’s Pulitzer Prize-finalist drama under Edward Coffield’s softly focused direction. Other Info:  Herzog’s one-act, 90-minute work debuted off-Broadway in 2011 and was a Pulitzer finalist in 2013. Like another of her efforts, After the Revolution, it features a character based on her real-life grandmother, Leepee Joseph, an ardent leftist of causes in the 20th and even 21st centuries. A production of 4000 Miles by The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis in 2013 was marred by a portrayal of Leo as boorish and obnoxious, either because of the presentation’s director or the actor in the role. Whatever the reason, New Jewish Theatre’s version seems much closer to realizing the tenderness of the relationships between characters referenced in reviews of the play’s off-Broadway productions. Coffield paints gentler portraits of the primary characters here, which are realized in satisfying fashion by Amy Loui as the inquisitive Vera and Chris Tipp as her rudderless grandson. The two connect grandly as they enact conversations between grandmother and grandson that also show them to be friends and allies, though not without conflict. Coffield’s pacing is steady and low-key throughout.

By Mark Bretz

Loui, at first glance, seems far too vital and energized to be convincing as a nonagenarian. She quickly proves her mettle, however, by convincing an audience with her halting gait and shaking hand that she can assume the role of the feisty Vera and claim it as her own, aided by movement coach Jaimie McKittrick. Tipp portrays Leo as a bit flighty and aimless, but he shapes the character’s crude language with a soft edge that is essential to making Leo a likable figure. He’s adept at showing the young man’s aching vulnerability in his awkward reunion with Becca, whom he loves but doesn’t really understand. The role of Becca fits Rachel Fenton like a well-worn glove; Fenton adroitly depicts the ambitious student’s frustrations with her comparatively immature lover. It’s difficult to watch the chasm grow between the two, which appears both inevitable and painful. Costuming by Michele Friedman Siler fits each of the four characters, while Michael Sullivan’s lighting captures the times of day as well as the tenor of the conversations. As artistic director Kathleen Sitzer and Coffield each favorably note in the show’s program, 4000 Miles is “a small play with a big heart.”

“Heart”” Ends in

“Art”

By Bryan A. Hollerbach | Photos by Sarah Conroy

A small new gallery in the Central West End greets art devotees.

F

or the St. Louis metro area, the online media company YP The Real Yellow Pages lists 235 “Art Galleries, Dealers & Consultants” – but early last month, it really ought to have upped by one that impressive total. On April 7, St. Louis’ Central West End neighborhood welcomed at 4374 Olive St. Horsley Arts, a small and quite selective gallery owned by artist Linda Horsley. Horsley briefly explains what inspired her not only to open the by-appointment-only gallery but also to open it where she did. “The charm of the Central West End has grown while I have been away in Seattle for the past 12

years teaching art and with family,” she says. “The arts are active here. Three blocks west of me is the Atrium Gallery, and two blocks over are the chain of McPherson [Avenue] galleries.” Likewise, Horsley briefly distinguishes Horsley Arts from other galleries in the metro area in general and in the Central West End in particular. “This smaller gallery remains unique, as it has an inviting quality,” she says. “People said it felt like a gathering of friends at the opening. “Built in 1910, it’s now renovated with a public restroom on the first floor and modern seated fixtures, and it seems airy for a smaller exhibition space of 75 feet long and only 20 feet wide.” Reflecting the comparatively compact area of the gallery, its opening involved only two artists: Bill Christman (the creator of Beatnik Bob’s Museum of Mystery Mirth and Mayhem in downtown St. Louis’ City Museum) and Horsley herself. In general, their oeuvres contrast tidily, with Christman’s signmaking bona fides and sculptural fondness for primaries and visual impishness counterbalancing the desaturated palette and disquieting funhouse-mirror distortions of much of Horsley’s portraiture. The gallerist sketches her rationale for opening with Christman’s works and her own. “The center space was taken up with robots, lights, signs and metal sculptures by Bill that have some whimsy, which I believe mixed well with my work on canvas,” Horsley says, adding that Christman also used the property’s long backyard to display certain larger robots. “This gallery space gave him the opportunity to extract or isolate the sculptures. “Each of us has our own fantasy that mostly complements the other – ‘state of playfulness.’ The work shows a reaction to the social/commercial world we live in. Bill’s world has a lot of the signs of the past commercial world in which to delight, and his sculptures recombine the usage of the material-

industrial world. My oil paintings sometimes show social stress from this commercial world.” The initial exhibition, Horsley notes, will continue through May 30, after which no successor has yet been formalized. “Our closing party is May 31, a Wednesday, from 5 to 8 p.m. – it’s open to the public,” she says, before adding, puckishly, “Bill hopes to sell more work so he doesn’t have to take it all back to his place.” Given that her own work constitutes so integral a part of Horsley Arts’ debut, the gallery’s namesake addresses whether it will serve as a permanent exhibition space for her work – or whether her half of the debut simply reflects happenstance. “The space may have only three or four shows a year, but [otherwise it] will remain an artist studio shown by appointment,” Horsley says. “I will continue to show in this space, and local artists will be invited to exhibit.” Otherwise, Horsley revisits her concepts – physical and aesthetic alike – for the new addition to YP’s 235. “I had envisioned this smaller gallery to be something like an old-world salon with a twist of renovation,” she says. “It’s a comfortable space that doesn’t look like a commercial storefront or even the typical whitewall gallery. It’s also my studio upstairs and home above the exhibition space. The first floor has my kitchen in the back, which we used for refreshments [at the April 7 opening]. The space has modern fixtures, soft gray walls, tall ceilings and bright wood floors throughout. “It’s a comfortable gallery space, and people have enjoyed its unobtrusive environment.” To be considered for exhibition at Horsley Arts, contact Horsley at lindasue@live.com with a file of no more than five images. Horsley Arts, 4374 Olive St., St. Louis, 314-243-3879, lindahorsley.com
