Welcometospringtime! Achoo! If yourhomeisfilledwithwheezing, sneezingandnose-blowing,it couldbeduetoseasonalallergies oranupper respiratoryinfection.Symptoms forbothcanbesimilar, soknowinghowto treatthemandwhentoseekmedicalcare isimportant.

One cluethat you’redealingwithseasonal allergiesistiming,says Dr.JessicaSmith, a Mercy Kidspediatrician.When your childstarts exhibiting classicallergy symptoms–sneezing, congestionanditchyeyes–like clockwork eachspring,it’ssafetoassumeallergiesare theproblem.

“If youhave a fever, thatdenotesmore ofaninfection,”Smithsays.“If your child suddenly getssick, andthey’re reallynot feeling well, thatmightbea cluethatit’smore ofaninfectionthananallergy.” Coldsorother typesofupper respiratoryandsinusinfections alsomayincludeasorethroat, coughing andheadache.

Whetherit’sinfectiousorallergic, symptoms canbeannoyingatbest.Over-the-counter treatmentoptionscanhelp,andSmith

recommendsstartingwithalong-actingoral antihistamine,suchasa24-hour formulation of cetirizine hydrochloride(Zyrtec).Children cantakethemedicationinaliquidor chewable tablet form, andthe keytosuccessfultreatment is consistency.

“I recommendtakingit every24hours.It’s notnecessarytotakeitatthesametime every day, but takeitbefore you go tobed,”Smithsays. “And you wanttodoit foronetotwo weeksat leastbefore youdecideifit’s workingornot.”

Histamineisa chemical releasedbythe immune systemthatattacksallergensand causes commonallergy symptoms. Takingan antihistaminewill reducelevelsofhistamine andoftenease symptomsquickly.“Youtakean antihistamine, andthenextday yourhistamine levelisdown, and youmight feelalittlebetter,” Smithsays.“Thenextday youtakeanother antihistamine, andyourhistaminelevelis down evenmore, and you feelalotbetter. The bigmistakeIseealotofparentsmakingis thattheystoptheantihistaminebecausetheir childstartsto feelbetter.Andwhathappens?
