Galaxies: The Ultimate Mega Transect: A Tour of the Universe by Dr. Robert K. McMahan For the ancients, the Universe was the Earth and what they saw in the heavens were events designed exclusively for their benefit. By the Middle Ages, this view of the Universe had been elevated to religious dogma, challenged only at great personal risk. Today we know, through understanding based upon observations and the development of theory, that the Universe is enormous, that it has existed for billions of years, and that we are not located at the center – because there is no center. We are living through a Renaissance in Astrophysics, and our understanding of the Universe has advanced at a breathtaking pace over the last fifty years. The development of our modern view of the Universe represents a truly remarkable odyssey in the history of human thought. This short course is a serious introduction to how our modern understanding of the Universe has evolved and a survey of our current understanding of the beautiful, astonishing, amazing, wondrous Universe of which we are a part. Topics highlighted in this short course will include: historical astronomy, stars, special and general relativity, galaxies, large-scale structure, cosmology, expansion of the Universe, cosmic microwave background radiation, the big-bang, string theory, and the multiverse.
