With over 75 nominations from all walks of local life, including the public and private sectors, our extremely discerning panel of judges has settled upon 40 of the Kitsap Peninsula's most outstanding individuals to be honored as our "40 Under Forty" Class of 2006. This exceptional group will undoubtedly become part of the next generation of "movers and shakers" — that select few who will determine what this place we all treasure will become, and who will shape its destiny. From all the materials the judges have reviewed, it is extremely obvious that our future is in good hands!

Ted Abernathy grew up in rural northern Georgia, but knew early on he had an interest in real estate and would pursue it as a career. Common Threads Bind Honorees Family. Community service. Faith. Learning the value of a dollar. Literacy. These are among the common threads that ran through many of the 40 Under Forty nomination forms. A number of our 40 Under Forty honorees cited Rotary and the Relay For Life as their passions. Rotary for offering the opportunity to not only give back to the community, but to help those in need in other places in the world. The Relay For Life demonstrates a unique sense of community camaraderie and is the absolute personification of hope, while raising money for breast cancer research. And there are other passions as well, most of which have been forged by exceptional and personal life experiences. “I am proud to say I have provided financial support for World Vision from the time I was 15 years old,” stated Afshan Tabazadeh. "I had one child that I provided financial support for from the age of two up to 17, and I am now on my second child with World Vision.” This, from someone who escaped Iran at age 11. Others find their passions closer to home. “The Navy League is the organization I spend most of my free time working with, Says Jennifer Nance. “I feel a huge commitment to supporting the sea services based on the fact we live and work, surrounded by the Navy.” “I am a big believer in helping children and disadvantaged families,” declared Kay Hill Cook. “This is

a purpose close to my heart, because I have been blessed with good people in my life and have never needed anything like this. I am grateful that I can try to help make a difference in the lives of people who haven’t been, and need a helping hand.” Beside understanding the responsibility of giving back to the community that gave them the opportunity to succeed, many of our honorees also noted how their parents taught them to think independently and how hard work has its own rewards. Those aren’t just monetary, but also include the self-satisfaction enjoyed by a job well done, as well as in the rewards achieved by not being afraid to follow their dreams. But perhaps the entire entrepreneurial mindset was articulated best by Maura Hallam Sweley, who said, "After years of being an employee, with some freelancing on the side, my move to Kitsap was the perfect impetus for me to make the leap from employee to self-employed. Despite the occasional rocky road that being a small business owner can lead you down, I hope to never be an employee again.” Our 40 Under Forty honorees obviously understood that basic philosophy at a relatively early age, and it has brought them to this place in time. Some people never understand it — and that is often the simple difference between leaders and followers.

Rebecca Graham Owner, IMPACT Writing & Design, North Mason Neighbor Age: 35 Rebecca Graham started IMPACT Writing & Design in 2002 after watching nonprofits struggle. She assisted with the North Kitsap transition houses, which allowed families to get back on their feet after adverse domestic occurrences. She earned her first dollar picking up nails in the parking lot of the moving company her father managed, a tradition that her daughter Sarah continues today. Kay says that it is surprising that she has always worked on the accounting side of business and has legal office education, but doesn’t balance her personal checkbook.

Ken is a family oriented man, but many people don’t know that he is also a huge 80s Van Halen fan. He and his wife, along with four other families, started Grace for Kids in 2004, a private foundation that helps out kids in Kitsap County. He also serves on the Board of Directors for the Harrison Medical Center Foundation, and is Secretary/Treasurer of the Kitsap County Estate Planning Council. “I would pay untold amounts of money to see David Lee Roth with Van Halen… in 1982,” said Ken.
