NO JOB TOO BIG: People are divaifed by the gigantic size of ships sen.riced by PSNS. Here, a worker d isma rttles scajfolding near a 1W.der post and propeller shaft at tlie rear of USS Carl Vinson.

A Lewis, a mechanical engineer 1n the Design D1\11Sion'& weaponry section. Downey's grandfather, Fred Downey, worked in the Supply Department and his father. Jim, worked in the Design Division. Lewis' grandfather, William Lewis, セ@ ed at the yard dunng World War I as a coppersmith, then went back to work there during \Vorld War Din the sheet metal shop. ll1s grandmother. f\1artha Lewis, managed th<.' elect:ncal shop's stockroom during \\ orld \Var 11 Burrow'S and others whose family histones mtcrtwine with the shlpyard's say proudly that they got their jobs on their own. Nevertheless, sh e says, "I feel like fm carrying on a family tradition." She has a daughter, Amanda, age 9 With a real knack for operating the nunia-

ture cranes at the councy flllr - who someday might want to work at PSNS. What does Burrows think of that? "There are some places that are real unhealthy where I w ouldn't want her to work, like sandblasting or insulating," she says, aft.er some thought. •But I wouldn't mind her being something else, like a c rane operator." Downey, too, says he w ould recommend the shipyard to either o f his two sons, if they showed an interest. "It's definitely the best Navy yard in the country," he said.

MAKING THE PROPELLERS SHINE The sea has been cruel to the four massive propellers of the aircratt earner USS Carl VIJ\SOn. For years, it has warped them, battered them, dulled them, coated them

with barnacles and scoured thousands of pits into their surfaces. But Puget Sound Naval Shipyard's propeller shop knows how to gently restore these 66,000-pound workhorses to radiant health and beauty. For a few short months, the shop removes them from the ship and takes them in. Then a crew of workers smooths, s hapes, straightens, balance!l, polishes and pampers each blade until it shines Wee newly minted gold They have a gigantic room " ·here the propellers, also known as screws, can be slowly heated and cooled to relieve internal stress built up by repeated welding o f their surfaces. -1 like working with these bigger propellers. They're unique," says John Gntruh of Kingston, who has spent 40 years in Uus specialized marine trade.

"These propellers come in h ere so dirty and ugly you wouldn't hardly recognize them.'' he adds - And they leave tn beautiful condition. They're a work of art." セヲ。、・@ of a special nickel-alummumbronze alloy that resists corrosion, each screw has five enormous blades that rotate around a hub. Toda.v at the propeller shop a crew is getting ready to balance one of the Carl Vinson's propellers on a giant rotating machine similar to those foW\d at a garage for balancing car tires. The giant prop is hoisted up on the balancing nl8chine with a 60-ton overhead crarie. At the same tilne, Jeff Rogers of Belfair is smoothing and pollshlng anotht'r of Carl \'mson's four propellers. "You want a smooth surf8C\? for the ''ater to flow over," explams Grimlh.

PAST AND FUTURE WORK HAND IN HAND • The past and future of PSNS are bosom buddies jns1de the yard's 92,250-square-foot sheet metal shop. ' The future is sitting next to one wall. It's a machine f.hat's told ,.,.hat to do by a computer, then uses an (il.St.orushingly powerful laser beam to do It. : Some say the laser could start a fire from a hal!-mile ti.way But t.n.stead lt JS used for cutting lntrlcate shapes la.cge flat pieces of sheet metal Generatmg the equivalent of 1.6 million watts of wer at Its peak, the beam can slJce through quanerch stainless steel like a razor 21ppmg through paper, eaving a tr.ul only 811,000ths mch wtde, says Rudy hlund, a shop supervisor The laser 1S directed by the slupyard's CAD/CAM sysm. which allows architects, designers and engineers •cr('ate" a needed part usmg a セイ・ョ@ and keyboard e dunens1ons and other numertcal intormanon then fed to thl' machine by the con1puter The shipyard's past is sitting nearby In the sheet taJ shop. It's an engravmg maclune, installed there ln the 9.0'20s. that uu.cnbes words, shapes and lettering In セィ・エ^@ metal using a \vheel that spins at 10,000 rpm. It's still used, and today it ls being operated by Les ote who manually shapes the letters using a handontrolJed lever Also u1 the shop L'i n splnrung lnthc that memorizes ov.· Its operator make'! a single part so that it can make ozens or hundreds more on Its OWi\. And here is a huge tum>t punch that cufll notches d holes In !'!hN>t metal up to a hal!·inch thick using Lo、・ァイHセ@ eleccrlfted plasma. in the past four years. t has made 12.37 mUlJon cuts without breald.ng down nee

Our hats are off to the hardworking in .. dividuals that have made the shipyard what it is today in Kitsap County. The Bon Marche has been serving customers in the North· west for 100 years and Puget Sound Naval Shipyard has been serving the Pacific Fleet of our prestigious Navy for 100 years. We both look forward to serving Northwest for the next 100 years.
