JCSC Foundation News The excitement is building for the first Deerslayer 5K Obstacle Course Run in April. Have you registered? If you’ve never done an obstacle course race before, then this is the one for you! Gather a few friends, register as a team in the non-competitive category, and have fun! All proceeds support the charitable endeavors of the Johnson City Senior Center Foundation. The Foundation provides valuable financial support to the Johnson City Senior Center, including funding for a partnership with Mountain States Foundation to offer the services of the Community Health Activities Coordinator to provide free health information and screenings for seniors at Memorial Park Community Center/Johnson City Senior Center; matching funds for an ABC grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission to fund the Senior Chorale musical group; fellowships to provide opportunities for

News low-income seniors to participate in activities at the Senior Center at reduced fees; and provides charter transportation services for some day outings across state lines! This past December, the Foundation supplied 136 Christmas boxes to homebound elderly in our local community, thanks to generous donations from our participants and community supporters. The Foundation is working to increase its Christmas outreach; the goal for 2016 is to serve at least 200 needy seniors in our community who do not receive resources from other agencies. The Johnson City Senior Center Foundation Board is comprised of community-minded volunteers working together to improve the lives of senior adults in Johnson City and surrounding areas. The Foundation has no paid staff, and all funds raised directly benefit the participants of the Johnson City Senior Center at Memorial Park Community Center.

March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month Colorectal cancer is a cancer that’s starts in the colon or the rectum. Colon cancer and rectal cancer are often grouped together because they have many features in common. Colorectal cancer is the fourth most common cancer in both men and women in the United States. Most colorectal cancers grow slowly over several years, and about 1 in 20 people develop colorectal cancer at some point in life. Due to a combination of early screening and improved treatments, survivorship has increased over the past 20 years. Colorectal cancer starts in the inner lining of the colon and/or rectum, slowly growing through some or all of its layers. It typically starts as a growth of tissue called a polyp. A particular type of polyp, called an adenoma, can then develop into cancer.

Risk Factors • Being overweight or obese • Physical Inactivity • Certain types of diet ( High intake of red meats or processed meats) • Smoking • Heavy Alcohol use • Being older, risk increases markedly after age 50 • Personal history of colorectal polyps or colorectal cancer • Personal history of inflammatory bowel disease • Family history of colorectal cancer • African Americans have a higher incidence of colorectal cancer

Symptoms • • • • • •

Changes in bowel habits Constipation Diarrhea Alternating diarrhea and constipation Rectal bleeding or blood in your stool Abdominal bloating, cramps or discomfort • A feeling that your bowel doesn’t empty completely • Stools that are thinner than normal • For more information, see the American Cancer Society web page.

Dominion Senior Living of Johnson City In December 2015, we welcomed a Greeneville native, Mink Ramsey, to our Dominion family. Mink has been a member of the Freewill Baptist church where he was the active song leader. He was raised on a farm with 11 other siblings and has always been extremely friendly and outgoing. Last year, Mink’s health had begun to decline which left Sharon Salyers, his daughter, in need of assistance. After searching, Sharon decided Dominion Senior Living would be a perfect place for Mink to settle in and call home. After two months of physical therapy with Susan Farris, Rehab Care’s LPTA and the excellent care he received from our staff, Mink was able to regain strength and social skills, which allowed him to move into the assisted living environment.

Fitness Tidbits!

Exercise and the Older Adult – Fact sheet from the American College of Sports Medicine By the year 2030, the number of individuals 65 years and over will reach 70 million in the United States alone. Those 85 and older will then be the fastest-growing segment of our population. We must determine the extent and mechanisms by which exercise and physical activity can improve health, functional capacity, quality of life, and independence in this population. Current evidence clearly indicates that participation in a regular exercise program is an effective way to reduce and/or prevent a number of the functional declines associated with aging. Older adults have the ability to adapt and respond to both endurance and strength training. Aerobic/endurance training can help to maintain and improve various aspects of heart and lung function and cardiac output, and such exercise can enhance endurance. Strength/ resistance training will help offset the loss in muscle mass and strength typically associated with aging, thereby improving functional capacity. Also important, reduction in risk factors associated with disease (heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, and so on) will improve health status and contribute to an increase in lifespan. Together, these training adaptations will greatly improve the functional capacity of older men and women, therefore improving their quality of life and extend independent living.
