Jace planned, organized, managed logistics and directed 80 volunteers in completion of an Agua Hedionda Lagoon improvement project. Any advice to parents out there who are hesitant to let their 8 year old jump on a skateboard & drop in from 10 feet? Skateboarding will keep them playing outside and meeting other cool kids. Just wear all your pads and your helmet and you will be okay even when you fall! All the kids I know seem to bounce right back up and get back on their board to try again! Nobody usually drops in the deepend their first day, so drop-in on a mini-ramp first and work your way up! My dad always spots me when I’m first learning and we get to spend a lot of time together because of skateboarding and surfing!

Here is what she had to say: How has living in North County affected your skating career? North County San Diego, especially Encinitas, is kind of the epicenter for vert-skateboarding, and a lot of legends and current pros live and train right here! It’s a treat we don’t take for granted that every time we go to our local Magdalena Ecke YMCA Encinitas skatepark, there are several pros there practicing and not only can you watch and learn, but you can skate with them and they’re all so nice! We get to skate with legends like female skating pioneer Cara-Beth Burnside, Bones Brigade member Mike McGill, and Andy Macdonald almost on a weekly basis! Lastly, there are plenty of parks to skate locally, and they’re building several more right now! Who are some local pros and companies that have helped you in your achievements? Local North-County: Mike McGill and his namesake skateshop located right here in downtown Encinitas. I go to the same school as his kids, we skate the same park, he always is encouraging and invites me to skate demos with him and the McGill’s skate team. Next for sure is Aura Skateboarding and founder Jim Bell. Jim built our backyard skatebowl and before that, our mini-ramp, and he invited me to be on his skate team. Now I get to skate Aura’s new indoor facility any time I want and it’s a great place to learn. The local Magdalena Ecke YMCA skatepark staff is very encouraging too and always makes me feel at home when we skate there, and they have fun contests for all the locals. Do you get nervous before every competition? If so, what do you do to relax and calm your nerves? I do get nervous, but I also get more excited than nervous. I want to do my best and not fall during my run, but contests are also so fun because all my skate friends are there, and the Silly Girl teammates, my family, and the music always pumps me up. I’m too young to meditate my Dad says, but I do go into some sort of zone during my contest runs and I’m not sure how I learned to do that, but it works for me. Skating and surfing in contest heats is one of the best feelings in the world for me, especially when I make the finals! What advice do you have for other kids thinking about learning how to skateboard? You’re never too young to learn and never too old either. Don’t be scared because it is so fun, just wear your pads at first. Your mom and dad will be happy that you’re outside playing instead of inside playing a video game. “Finding Nemo 3D was so cool! I loved the movie and felt like I was swimming with Nemo and Dory. My favorite part is with the sea turtles, so seeing that in 3D was awesome. Darla is also really funny from inside the Dentist’s office. I’ve never seen a 3D movie before, but now I want all of my favorite movies to be in 3D! “I’ve actually never been to a 3D movie before, and I was quite impressed! For a “kid’s movie” Finding Nemo is definitely one of my favorites, but seeing it really come alive on the screen was amazing! The underwater setting and bright, vibrant colors of the fish and other underwater creatures was beautiful. Watching the fish literally swim right up to us was very realistic and definitely added a whole new element to the movie! The experience as a whole was very easy and fun. The staff was friendly and the theater was very clean…and didn’t have any musty movie theater smell that I’ve noticed at other theaters! Maddie really enjoyed the movie and hasn’t stopped talking about it! It was a great motherdaughter outing and I will definitely be back to see another movie soon!”

Jacob Cervantes Â An inspirational Rock Hero! Jacob Cervantes is like most 17 year olds. He loves spending time with friends, playing football, learning about video cameras and noodling with computers. But when school ends at 3 oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;clock, life for Jacob takes on a very different look from your average high-schooler. By 3:30 he has driven all the way from his home in Otay Ranch to the Rock Church, where he will spend the next 3-5 hours volunteering his time to Rockâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Production Arts. Jacob is just one of the hundreds who volunteer at the Rock Church. In 2011, Rock Church volunteers contributed more than 235,000 hours to the City of San Diego, saving the city an estimated $4 million dollars. It is volunteers like Jacob, who help spread pervasive hope through his time, effort and dedication to inspiring others. When Jacob was 13, he applied to run a camera for the Rock services. He was given the chance to man a stationary cameraâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;but his level of skill and eagerness to learn caught the eye of Doug Mote, the Rockâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Technical Arts Director. He was quickly given the chance to learn the highly complex jib camera and Jacob took full command.
