Kavita Arora Hometown: Carlsbad Age: 12 Grade: 7th School: Rancho Encinitas Academy Hobbies: Piano and karate Favorite Food: Pickles Favorite thing about living in North County: All of the outdoor festivals & fairs

Q&A What is your favorite subject at Rancho Encinitas Academy? Math is my favorite subject because there is always a right answer and because my class is small; I can do more advanced work. What is your favorite activity to participate in at Rancho Encinitas Academy? Yoga is one of my favorite activities at school. It helps me to recharge and find peace. Are there any special field trips or activities that you would like to describe? I really look forward to our field trips to volunteer at the Rancho Coastal Humane Society. It’s nice to be able to help care for animals that were abandoned and give them love. I also love the Star Assemblies where we get to see some cool performances like The Chinese Acrobats and The African Dancers that came last month.

What is the most valuable lesson you have learned at Rancho Encinitas Academy? At REA, I’ve really learned to love learning! The teachers are so encouraging and nurturing and they push me to do my best. For me, REA is like a big family. I’ve learned to appreciate the differences in people and that I can be myself. What other talents or hobbies do you have outside of school? I have been a karate student for the past 6 years at the YMCA under Master Sensei Rivera. I’m currently a Junior Black Belt and have participated in many competitions in Southern California. I’m looking forward to testing for my Black Belt in December and becoming a student teacher. I also love to play piano and I’ve even composed my own short song which I got to play at my formal recital and at our school talent show.

Where do you see yourself in the next five years? In 5 years, I’ll be a senior in high school, applying to college. I would really like to attend Johns Hopkins University in Maryland. I was invited to participate in their Center for Talented Youth Summer Program for the past 4 years and loved the challenge and meeting new people from around the world. Is there anything else you would like to add? I really want to thank Mr. Paul and Ms. Linda for starting such an amazing school where I have been challenged academically, made awesome friends, and have been able to be myself and I’m so lucky that my parents sent me here. I also really love all my teachers and Ms. Verna for continuing to make REA such a great school to come to every day. NCK

Student of the Month

Thomas Rodriguez Hometown: Encinitas Age: 13 years old Grade: 8th School: The Rhoades School

Favorite Food: Grilled cheese sandwiches and Jamba Juice smoothies Favorite thing about living in North County: The weather

Hobbies: Computer programming, basketball, music/DJing

Q&A

What is your favorite subject at The Rhoades School? Which class are you enjoying the most this year? My favorite subject this year is Social Studies with Mrs.Schramm. I love to learn about the history of our world and how it became the way it is today. I have taken a couple of courses on Model UN and really liked lobbying for important causes that can have an impact on our future. I’ve always been interested in Computer Sciences and had a fabulous teacher named Mr. Hinko who really got me excited about programming and taught me how to program in HTML and Java. He has always encouraged me, given me advice, and found special projects to challenge me. He taught me so much that now my parents and teachers always ask me for help when their computers frustrate them.

means that all 4 of the kids in my family can be at school together, at least until next year, when I will be leaving for high school.

What is your favorite activity to participate in at The Rhoades School? My favorite activity at The Rhoades School would have to be playing for the basketball team. You really get to connect with all of your friends after school and just have a great time while still getting exercise. Mr. Ruppert and Mr. Dei have been our P.E. coaches since kindergarten so by the time we are ready to play on the middle school basketball team they know us really well and can challenge us to play together and play our best as a team. I also enjoy the Buddy program. This year my class gets to buddy up with the kindergarten class and it’s fun to spend time reading or playing with them and helping them with their projects. My youngest brother is in kindergarten this year with the same teacher I had 9 years ago, so it’s kind of neat that my friends and I get to be with him and his friends during our Buddy time each week.

Where do you see yourself in the next five years? In five years from now I hope to be driving my own car and hopefully I will be a freshman at UCLA!

What is the most valuable lesson you have learned at The Rhoades School? I believe the most valuable lesson that I have learned at The Rhodes School would have to be how to be an effective leader. It’s sometimes hard to be a good friend while also trying to do what you think is the right thing. I sometimes feel really strongly about what I believe in and want to fight for it. But, I have learned that it’s important to listen to others who might have equally good or better ideas and see what we can come up with together. What do you think makes The Rhoades School unique and different from other schools? I think the friendly learning environment is what makes Rhoades truly Rhoades. Everything is focused on making learning enjoyable with handson experiences, like our ability to use the recording studio to produce our own original music. We also have fun traditions to look forward to in every grade. This year I’m excited for our 8th grade trip to Washington, D.C. I also love that with a K-8 school our friends can be together for so many years and we have such a great bond. Milan has been my best friend since we started kindergarten at The Rhoades School and I know we will be friends for life thanks to Rhoades. It also

What other talents or hobbies do you have outside of school? When I am not in school, you can usually find me playing basketball, DJing, listening to music, or working on my computer or phone. (My grandma and I were at the front of the line at 5:00 a.m. for the iPhone 6 plus on the day they were released). My mom always tells me to stop “playing” on my phone. But when my 7th grade project measuring voice recognition features of cell phone technology made it to the California State Science Fair, I think she realized I am doing more than “playing.” Well, sometimes! I have 3 younger siblings and I am the Assistant Coach for my second grade brother’s Junior FLL robotics team.

Is there anything else you would like to add? I am especially grateful to Mr. Hinko at The Rhoades School for getting me excited about computers and programming. I’m also thankful for my robotics coach, Mr. Kanevsky, for the years he devoted to our Rhoades School Tech Attack robotics team. My parents are always supportive of me and they loaned me $100 this summer so that I could pay for my Apple developer’s license. I needed to do that in order to upload my first game to the app store for purchase. I hope to sell enough games to be able to pay them back. Surfer of the Month

Austin Tyler Sonnier Age: 18

Started Surfing: Age 6 (2002)

Grade: 12 School: Torrey Pines High School Hometown: Del Mar Stance: Goofy Foot Sponsors: Matuse Wetsuits and Hobie Surfboards

Starting Competing: Age 13 (2009) Hobbies: Fishing, skiing, writing and bodysurfing Favorite Surf Spot: k-59, El Salvador Long board or short board: Longboard

Q&A

How has living in North County affected your surfing career? North County San Diego has given me massive, medium and micro lefts, rights, slabs, mush burgers, beach breaks, river mouths and point breaks to surf. Each North County spot uniquely shapes my style every day, giving me a diverse set of tools to use in competitions, but mainly, the flat spells in the summer have, out of necessity, required me to ride big longboards. The fun derived from the power and flow of a longboard has never left my mind, and I’ve been hooked ever since. Who are some local pros and companies that have helped you in your achievements? How? Shea Roney, an ex-pro long boarder, took me under his wing many years ago. Shea has been coaching me ever since. When I was younger, he took me on surf trips up and down the coast to prepare for upcoming events. He and my dad, Keith Sonnier, are to thank for introducing me to the world of longboarding. Josh Martin from Hobie Surfboards is a huge help in shaping my boards and making sure I have the right equipment under my feet. He knows anything and everything about each square inch of board and how it will react with the wave in any situation.

In addition, Spencer Hayes at Matuse Wetsuits has helped me progress. He supplies me with amazing wetsuits to keep me warm and comfortable in the cold winter water. Any advice to other surfers out there looking to improve their skills? If you aren’t having fun, stop what you are doing and mix things up. Fun is stoke. It leads to passion, and passion allows you to wake up early, paddle hard into waves, and seek to learn new maneuvers. Without fun, there is no stoke, passion, or desire to improve. Try mixing things up to find the fun again. Love what you do. What do you love the most about surfing? Why? I love the ability to feel confident and in control in an aquatic situation where 99.9% of people might panic or fall. I love approaching a glassy wave on the nose. I slide my back foot further back and squat down into a stretch 5. Slicing my fingers through the wave I feel the wind through my hair and see the reflection of my toes gliding across moving water. Have you ever had any shark run-ins? Other sea creatures? I’ve encountered a large 7 gill shark while spear fishing in Del Mar.

Also, a sea turtle in Costa Rica ran into my board when I was surfing an outer reef, and I thought it was a shark! Where do you see yourself professionally in 5 years? In five years, I will be surfing every day while having successfully completed medical school prerequisites. I want to become a pediatrician but surfing wise, I’d love to compete in a few pro contests in other countries as well. Experiencing new and diverse cultures internationally is one of my favorite things to do. Where is your go-to surf gear shop? Mitch’s Surf Shop in Solana Beach. What’s the biggest wave you’ve ever surfed? Triple overhead Playa Zonte in El Salvador on my 9’6 single fin. Is there anything else you would like to add? There is enough water for human need but not enough for human greed. Stick up for the planet. Bob Dylan is my favorite artist. Go Saints! NCK

Flu Season Labor Day has come and gone and our kids are back in school. Along with the joys of school comes cold and flu season. These illnesses are primarily passed by direct contact with our hands (desks, door handles, etc.) that are then used to rub eyes or eat lunch. The best way to avoid the more serious complications of these illnesses is of course to avoid getting them in the first place. Therefore, wash hands, wash hands, wash hands. Hand sanitizer works great as well. Encourage your kids to sneeze or cough into their elbow to limit the spread.

TREATMENT TIPS to keep your children comfortable if they become sick t 1VTI UIF ĂžVJET TUBZJOH IZESBUFE JT WFSZ JNQPSUBOU

We also need to boost our kids’ immune system. We can do this by keeping them active, encouraging healthful diets (lots of fruits and vegetables please), and ensuring consistent sleep. Additionally, make sure your children are up to date on their immunizations including the pertussis (whooping cough) and flu vaccines. Everyone over 6 months of age should get a flu shot every year. Consider getting a nasal flu vaccine for kids over 2 years to avoid the need for an injection.

How has living in North County affected your skating career? Living in North County has opened me up to limitless possibilities in skateboarding. I skate with amazing groms, ams and pros almost everyday. They all have their unique styles and I just watch and learn. What’s your favorite after-school snack? My Dad’s homemade turkey chili. Do you get nervous before every competition? If so, what do you do to relax and calm your nerves? Yes, I do. I like to take a walk with my Mom and Dad. What advice do you have for other kids thinking about learning how to skateboard? Make it about fun with your friends and aim for 1 new trick a week and on different terrain.

How do you juggle your other interests and skateboarding? Schoolwork and skateboarding are always the biggest part of my days. Crafting and story writing is what I do in my down time. Is there anything else you want to add? No matter what your sport or activity, do it because it makes you happy. Use that to push yourself a little bit each day. Your ability to motivate yourself will help you progress in different parts of your life and that feels pretty good! NCK

We hear that you have several other talents and hobbies, can you tell our readers about those? I like cooking with my family and I also like arts and crafts. I just made a ping pong table, some beds with funky bedding and some gum ball and candy machines all out of things we save to reuse like bottle tops, buttons and little containers. I also love to write and play the piano.

Top 5 Tips for Losing Weight and Improving Your Health

1

Avoid Sugar At All Costs

It’s no secret that both kids and parents love sugar. According to a study by JAMA Internal Medicine, 71.4% of U.S. adults are consuming more than their recommended daily sugar intake. For optimal health, avoid it! Excessive sugar intake is linked to obesity, heart disease, metabolic issues, dangerous inflammation in the body and many other serious conditions. It’s a health epidemic the majority of parents don’t know how to combat because it’s in many foods we think are healthy and good for us. But don’t forget, your eating and fitness habits influence your children tremendously. Help yourself and the rest of the family detox from sugar by making simple switches every day. For example, swap out sugary breakfast cereals for wholesome egg scrambles. Change your family’s habits and every member will begin feeling better.

2

Take Advantage of Quick, Efficient Workouts

Who has time to hit the gym when they have to take the kids to soccer practice and make a wholesome dinner? Not many. But even on the busiest of days, you can fit in a great workout. Limit your workouts to 30-45 minutes max. This will force you to focus on your workout in order to maximize your time. Even better, get an amazing workout in as little as 4 minutes with Tabata training (20 seconds on, 10 seconds rest of any exercise for 4 min). These short workouts are efficient, intense and will energize you through your busy day.

3

Whether you’re ready for it or not, having kids changes the way you eat. You become more conscious of ingredients, look for more convenience, and often in an effort to lose those stubborn last few stubborn pounds of baby weight, try to find foods that will fill you up without filling you out. It’s not easy, but Michael Wystrach and Carter Comstock, founders of the weight-loss and wellness delivery based food program, F3 Foods, are making it easier. Here are their “top 5 health tips” for busy parents looking to maintain healthy eating habits and shed pounds.

Plan Ahead

We all tend to eat what is available and what’s convenient. If candy and chips are in the pantry, guess what we will reach for come snack time? And we all know what happens when someone orders pizza at the office. Make sure to take time out every week to stock your fridge with fresh fruits, vegetables, healthy nuts and seeds. Cut them up, package them in individual containers for snacks or meals…whatever you need to do to stay on track! Making a healthy trail mix (we recommend an assortment of tree nuts, some raisins, seeds and dark chocolate) and make sure it is easily accessible. You will love it and your kids won’t even know they are being healthy when they grab a handful!

4

Focus on Food Quality, Not Calories

Put your calorie counting and scale fearing days behind you and embrace clean eating and all the weight loss benefits that come with it! We love the simplicity of the Paleo diet, which is all about eating the right foods, NOT restricting how much food you eat. Eat high quality meats, nuts, seeds, vegetables, fruits, and healthy oils (like olive oil and coconut oil) and you will be amazed at how effective your body is at self-regulating with the right fuel. Focus on eating the right foods and you’ll likely find you’re feeling great, not to mention more satisfied and more confident in your jeans!

5

Watch What You Drink

Water is your best friend when you’re trying to lose weight. Staying hydrated has numerous benefits, including promoting optimal physical and mental health, a healthy metabolism and digestive system, all while flushing out dangerous toxins. A lot of us don’t realize how much sugar we are consuming through beverages, and soda and fruit juices - all of which are sugar bombs that can take your health progress to a screeching halt. If you still miss a something sweet, use stevia or a little honey to sweeten your drinks or try making your own flavored water by adding fresh fruit and vegetables to it and letting it sit! It’s easy and the flavor combinations are endless!

Megan Rath is a wife and mom of an 8 year old daughter and 4 year old son. She is the organizer of the Hip Chicks Book Club (www.meetup.com/hipchicksbookclub), a large group of diverse women of all ages that meets in North County every month. Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell It’s 1986, and Eleanor, (Stereotypical “Red-HeadedStepchild” who comes from an abusive home), is the new girl in school. Park (good family, good grades, good life) is the only one who feels sorry enough for her to let her share his seat on the bus. Little does he know that when he does, his whole life will change. First love, man. I read this book in about two days. It was sweet, and smart, and even cringe-worthy and abrasive (Warning: LOTS of F-Bombs!) at times. It took me right back to high school, when I thought my clothes and taste in music were what defined me, but eventually realized it really is what’s inside you that truly makes you who you are. Also, if this book had a soundtrack, I’d totally buy it!

I give Eleanor & Park a B+. Also by Rainbow Rowell: Attachments, Fangirl, and Landline.

Wedding Night by Sophie Kinsella Lottie becomes the queen of bad decisions after any breakup, so when her boyfriend asks her on a business trip, instead of proposing like she thought, she gets mad, meets up with an old Ex, and they decide to get married right away. But Lottie’s sister, Fliss, has constructed a scheme to stop the wedding night before anything can happen, hoping to make Lottie see reason and annul the marriage. I just love when a book is truly just an escape from everyday life, and this one is just that. Nothing I had to think too hard about. It’s just a fun, fluffy read that left me feeling refreshed and happy, and ready to take on the heavier stuff.

I give this one a B. Sophie Kinsella is also the author of the Shopaholic books. The seventh book in that series, Shopaholic to the Stars, is now available.

Luca and Luke By Dave Franco

T

he doctor turned off the sonogram and took the instrument that he’d been gliding atop my seven-months pregnant belly and placed it next to the machine. With a solemn expression on his face, he looked at me square in the eye. “Mr. and Mrs. Meador, I’m afraid I have some bad news,” he began. “Your baby’s heart has stopped beating.” Chris and I looked at each other quizzically, not saying a word. I think the first thing that happens is the heart assumes news like this couldn’t possibly be true. We hugged each other in silence, then pulled back and looked at each other again. “I need a moment,” I told him. I walked into the restroom and started to tremble. Tears began to burst from my eyes and my body heaved up and down uncontrollably. I wrapped my arms around my baby girl still inside my belly and fell to my knees. “Lord, why take my sweet girl?” I pleaded with God to answer. It was then that something happened that I can only describe as a miracle. “You can keep

asking me why, Michelle,” I heard a voice inside my head say, “but it will be a long, painful road and you may never know the answer. Or you can trust me.” I looked at my swollen face in the mirror. And suddenly I said it. “I choose to trust you, Lord,” I said. It was all I had. I didn’t know what might become of saying such a thing. I guess I may never totally know. But God was about to show us that trust is not something you do, but a power you unleash. Twenty-four hours later, it was time to push Luca into this world. Our nurse took our hands and prayed, inviting God into the moment, to fill the room with His presence. I was overcome with a palpable sense of God protecting me like a mama bird covers her young. In the weeks that followed, there were no shortages of God’s mercies, just as there were no shortages of moments of unfathomable pain and feelings of loss. Friends stayed and people prayed, meals were delivered, and it was a strange combination of being broken-hearted and lifted higher than I’ve ever been before. The crib sat untouched in Luca’s room until it

was time for us to address it. With a pained look in his eyes, Chris said he was going to go in the room and take it down. This was going to be his saying goodbye as much as anything. His sniffling was gut-wrenching for me. He had been such a kind, loving husband throughout the entire ordeal. I continued to pray. And that is when the voice that I heard in the hospital spoke again. “Please don’t worry,” God said. “You’re going to have a son and you’ll name him Luke.” Exactly one year to the day after the birth of Luca, Luke was born. We talk about what a beautiful sister he has and how he’ll get to see her one-day. He may not quite understand yet, but he will. My husband and I are now a part of the Safe in Heaven ministry at Rock Church. We believe it was hand picked for us so we could come alongside other parents experiencing the loss of their babies.
