November 2012

November is such a great month! Nestled between Halloween and the upcoming holidays, although hectic, November seems to be the perfect time to enjoy the moments of family, friends, beautiful weather, delicious food, and of course the beginning of Christmas shopping season. I know one thing that we are all probably thankful for...we live in North County, San Diego, one of the most beautiful and desirable places to live in the entire world! We have such a great community of families and businesses, there is no better place to raise a family and watch our kids grow up. Be sure to see what our readers are thankful for in our ʻWe Asked You,” Thanksgiving edition. Other than Thanksgiving, November is full of some other great holidays! On November 11 we recognize Veteranʼs Day, which honors all members of the Armed Forces who have served our country valiantly. We have a huge community of Service Members we are lucky to call neighbors and friends here in North County. I attribute this as a key reason why the community of North County is so unique with so many outstanding individuals. To all Veterans, we salute you and thank you for what you do everyday! On Sunday, November 11, be sure to show your appreciation for these brave individuals and remember that while most of us get to spend the holidays with our loved ones, most service members do not. November also includes Housewife Day, November 3rd, which recognizes the importance of stay at home wives and mothers and World Kindness Day, November 13th, which, as it implies, encourages us to be kind to others and help create a better world. Donʼt forget about Clean Your Refrigerator Day, November 15th, and ironically enough, the day after Thanksgiving is actually Buy Nothing Day to some, which was created as a protest against the commercialism of holidays. (Do you abide by this holiday, or do you prefer the tradition of Black Friday?!)

This month I recommend...

learning more about and donating to the amazing non-profit organization, Team Rubicon. Team Rubicon is dedicated to bridging the gap between the lives that military personnel experience while deployed, and the lives they are reintegrated into when they return home. Hundreds of US military veterans, many returning home after fighting ten years of war, find a renewed sense of purpose for their skills and experiences through TR. Since its creation in January 2010, TR has impacted thousands of lives and reaches victims outside the scope of where traditional aid organizations venture; victims on the fringe. Is it a disaster relief organization? A veteran-focused enterprise? The truth is itʼs both. TR pioneered a new paradigm in disaster response while redefining the meaning of veteran reintegration into society. teamrubiconusa.org

What makes Ali Elise our North County Kid of the month is her amazing musical talent and dedication to her passion. Ali’s musical talent started with singing when she was very young. From there she expanded into learning the piano and more recently took up the guitar. Fresh off of performing at the San Diego Kids Expo, we caught up with Ali and asked her a few more questions… How old were you when you started playing the piano and singing? I started singing when I was 2 years old, and started piano lessons when I was 5. I actually started performing when I was 4. Where are some places you have performed in San Diego? House of Blues, Downtown San Diego. Lantern Festival. Hotel Inigo. Mira Mesa's Got Talent. Rolando Fall Festival. What qualities does it take to stay motivated and passionate as an aspiring artist? Patience, Self Confidence, Determination and the ability to laugh at yourself. We heard that you have a fun connection to the show “The Voice”! Who do you know that is on the show? SHHHH! I can't tell exactly who it is. "My vocal coach." He is going through auditions right now. How often do you practice the guitar, the piano, and vocals? (How many days/week or hours?) I practice at least 5 days a week. I also have guitar class at school. I practice with my vocal coach on Thursdays. (When he gets back from "The Voice" of course.) Have you ever written your own song? Yes, I write my own songs. Also, my friend Valerie wrote a poem and asked me to write the music to it. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? Graduating High School and going off to Point Loma Nazarene University, studying music. I would like to become a music teacher. Ali Elise at the San Diego Kids Expo singing a duet of Jason Mrazʼs “Iʼm Yours.” Any advice for kids who are interested in taking up an instrument or might want to start singing? For singers, start with Karaoke. It's easier to sing in front of people you know. For musicians, start with the piano, because it is related to all other instruments. ANY other info you would like to add? Any “thank you's” to people who have helped you along the way? Thank you to my brother Anthony. He came up with my band name "Fate By Friday." To my sister Laura, for being my biggest fan and to my parents, for getting me to all the gigs I have to perform at. I love you all!!

We Asked You! What are you thankful for?

Ask Down to Earth Dad Dear Down to Earth Dad, My third grader wants a new iPhone 5. She keeps telling me that she needs it in case there is an emergency. What do you think? Should I buy it for her? Sincerely, Tech-not-savy Mom Dear Tech-not-savy Mom,

Tennille (Mom): “I am thankful that we are in good health!” Joshua (Son, 5): “Chicken!”

First, kudos to your kid for her brilliant and blatant use of fear in the attempt to manipulate you into buying her an expensive smartphone. She has a bright career ahead of her as a political strategist or possibly as an advertising executive.

John (Dad): “Redemption!” Marin (Daughter, 7): “My Mom & Dad!”

Avel and Norma, proud parents of daughters Nicole (10) and Ava (7) all agree they are thankful for their “family, health, & wonderful life!”

But seriously, what emergency is she talking about? 99% of the time my kids are at school, karate, a neighbor’s house or with grandma. So if there actually is some emergency I can just call the school, the karate studio, the neighbor or grandma. And if there is something really important that I need to tell my kid – like the dog died or the house burned down – I’m telling them in person, not with a text message. What would your kid really do with an iPhone? Maybe she could use an application like Facetime or Siri? But do you want that? Right now in Des Moines, Iowa, there is an overweight, out-of-work, middle-aged guy, sitting alone in his living room who desperately wants to do Facetime with your kid. Don’t let that happen! And Siri, that’s also potentially trouble. You know what I would have done if I had an iPhone when I was in school? I would have cheated. During the middle of a test I would have slyly pulled out my phone and whispered “Siri, what is the square root of 81?”

Amy (Mom): “My family, good health, & my relationship with God.” Taylor (Daughter, 6): “My school talking about God!” Tanner (Son, 2): “Cars!”

Your kid really just wants to play games on the iPhone. I know this from firsthand experience, because as soon as I walk in the door at night my kids rip my phone out of my hands and play Temple Run until the battery runs out. What it really boils down to is this: your kid doesn’t need an iPhone, your kid wants an iPhone. And the reason they want an iPhone is because it will make the other kids jealous. When I was a kid the status symbol item in my elementary school was a Rubic’s Cube, which cost about $5.00 in 1982. Now third graders want to impress their friends by stuffing their Spiderman backpacks full of Apple products. And I think that’s crazy. My advice to you is this: don’t buy your kid an iPhone. Instead, take the money you would have spent on an iPhone and buy them 1 share of Apple stock. Your kid will thank you in about fifteen years, when they need to sell the stock to use the money to get their car out of the impound lot following a night of debauchery in the Gaslamp Quarter. And if you’re truly worried about a possible emergency and want your kid to have a cell phone so you can contact them at all times, then buy them a cheap pay-as-you-go phone for $20. It won’t make them look cool to their friends, but it has a functional purpose for a fraction of the price of an iPhone. However, if you choose to disregard my advice and you think it’s a wise investment to buy your kid an iPhone so they can be the bees-knees of the elementary school playground, well, I have one more suggestion for you: buy them a used phone that has been dropped, with a cracked screen - because that’s what’s going to eventually happen to your kid’s phone.

Andres (Dad): “My son!” Max (Son, 4): “Castle Bounce Houses!”

Sincerely,

Down to Earth Dad The Down to Earth Dad is a lawyer by day and youth soccer coach by night. He lives in Carlsbad with his wife and two kids.

One of the world’s top skateboard ramp builders, Jim Bell, is based right here in North County. He frequently builds custom backyard ramps, like the Filler’s backyard quarter-pipe and A-frame combo seen in the photo below. His ramp building skills were also featured in our October issue, as our skater of that month Bryce Ava Wettstein is the proud owner of the famous ‘iguana bowl’ in Encinitas. Jim also recently opened Aura Skateboarding Training Facility, which functions as a high quality ramp construction/design center, a private indoor Skatepark (with competition style street course & world class spine ramp), and a multi-purpose event venue for hire. Aura Skateboard Training Facility, located at 1074 La Mirada Court in Vista, was created to provide a private indoor Skatepark where skateboarders, BMX riders & scooter riders can progress under the best possible conditions. The skatepark boasts the highest quality ramps custom built by Jim Bell and his team inside an easy to find, high image industrial park. Their family lounge area offers free Wi-Fi, comfortable seating, a pool table, an original Pac-Man stand-up arcade, and toys/games (for younger kids).

US Navy Veteran

the f o O HER

Month!

HM2 (FMF) James “Doc” Hansen, US Navy Retired, served 13 years in the United States Navy. For most of that time he was stationed with Marine Corp ground combat forces providing them with routine and emergency medical care both in clinical and direct combat situations. Doc was medically retired in 2009 due to combat injuries he incurred while serving in Iraq. Despite living with the challenges of PTSD and a brain injury that required surgery in 2007, Doc still feels highly compelled to use his talents and training to serve his country and help those in need of his skills. In 2010 Doc sought out and found a group of likeminded veterans with Team Rubicon (www.TeamRubiconUSA.org). Team Rubicon unites the skills and experiences of military veterans with medical professionals to deploy vanguard teams that bridge the gap between disasters and aid response. When major disasters occur at home or abroad, Team Rubicon quickly sends in small volunteer teams of veterans and healthcare professionals to clear roads and medically stabilize disaster victims until larger organizations like the Red Cross can mobilize their larger assets. Team Rubicon has 10 regional teams and thousands of volunteers standing by to help all over the country. As part of Team Rubiconʼs regional team 9, Doc Hansen is a local representative in San Diego County. You will often find him busy using his networking skills to help organize Team Rubicon fundraising events. He even brews the beer for many of the events himself! However, if a major disaster strikes our region you can rest assured Doc stands ready at a momentʼs notice to grab his pack and head for the airport with his service dog “Leonardo” Di Puppy.

Fun Facts about Doc Hansen: Although I have lived all over the western U.S., I fell in love with Oceanside after first being stationed at Camp Pendleton in 1996. I have since adopted North County as my home.

My favorite place to eat in Oceanside is a Gastropub restaurant called The Flying Pig. I also like to spend time with friends at the Breakwater Brewery and in the summer my and wife and I ride our scooters around town.

*Note: all Libraries will be closed all day November 22 & 23 in observation of Thanksgiving.

In addition to working as a volunteer with Team Rubicon, I am a full time student working toward a Bachelors of Science degree in biology. My Bulldog, Leonardo, is the big man on campus. While I am happily married to my wonderfully supportive wife Amber, most of the girls on campus know Leonardoʼs name. sdnor thcountykids.com

Thanksgiving Sweet Potatoes Happy! Crunchy!

Healthy!

Make your Thanksgiving Sweet Potatoes the happy, healthy, crunchy way with this fun and silly recipe that uses baked bananas! Amanda and her friends, Luke and Lily, recommend you leave at least an hour and a half to both prepare and bake this recipe. Which leaves plenty of time to play while everything bakes! You could even make this a day or two in advance and leave final baking stage for Thanksgiving Day. Pre

Ingredients: 4 large sweet potatoes 2 bananas (ripe) 2 Tbsp olive oil 2 Tbsp butter 1/4 cup sugar or honey 1 tsp vanilla 1 tsp cinnamon

As seen on TV!

Step 1: Wash & Peel Sweet Potatoes Cover potatoes in 3 parts water & 1 part vinegar. Let sit for 5 minutes and then rinse thoroughly.

Step 3: Sweet Pecan Topping

Place butter, vanilla, sugar (or honey), cinnamon into small skillet. Place over low heat and melt together. Stir in pecans and once evenly coated, turn off and let cool.

While potatoes are baking, play outside!

We threw the ball for our dogs.

Step 4: Test potatoes and bake bananas!

Your potatoes are done when they are easily smashed with a fork. Add your bananas on top of potatoes (in the skins) and bake until dark brown (about 15 minutes).

Good Food Factory tips on how to safely peel a potato: Have an adult anchor a fork into one end of your potato. Make sure potato and your peeler are nice and wet. Gently push your peeler across potato, away from your body! Keep peeling potato, turning it with the fork, until all of the skin is gone. Dunk your peeler into a glass of water if it becomes a bit sticky or hard to push. Rinse once more.

Step 5: Mash & Top! Step 2: Cut, Prepare & Bake Sweet Potatoes Preheat oven to 400 degrees.2012 Have an adult cut potatoes into large chunks or slices. Place in cast ir 20 November

Mash potatoes and baked bananas, together in a baking dish. We just mashed our with large wooden spoons. (Be sure to have adult help get banana out of the peel, it will be hot!). Cover mashed potatoes & bananas with your pecan topping. Return to oven and bake for 20 minutes. Make silly face over your potatoes, to ensure proper sweetness.

“Staying out of kids' space can teach them to be responsible for their own decisions and mistakes. Is it their room, or are they borrowing the space while they're living in your house? If it's theirs, then they should be able to do whatever they want with it. If it's their clothes, they have the right to do whatever they want with those clothes. We have to give them some freedom to be who they are."

Q. What’s your favorite part about surfing? Why? A. My favorite part about surfing is that no two waves are alike so it always is a different experience. It always keeps you wondering and excited. Q. Have you ever had any shark run-ins? Other sea creatures? A. I have only seen a leopard shark while surfing, but they aren’t dangerous because they are very mellow and they are bottom feeders. Also, I see lots of seals and dolphins.

Q. How has living in North County, even San Diego in general, affected your surfing career? A. I think it has helped because there are so many different types of waves in Carlsbad. This creates well-rounded surfing because you could go to one spot and work on turns, or go to another spot and work on drop-ins.

Q. Where do you see yourself professionally in 5 years? A. In 5 years I will be 18, out of high school, and I hope to be surfing professionally. If that doesn’t work out, then I hope to be a Marine Biologist. That way I will always be close to the ocean. I want to always surf, either way.

Q. Who are some local pros and companies that have helped you in your achievements? How? A. Billabong has helped me with clothes, bathing suits, and just putting my name out there. Also, my dad has really helped me by acting as my coach. Barbie, the owner of Offshore Surf Shop, has also been a great help.

Q. Who is your favorite pro-surfer? A. My favorite pro surfer is definitely Bethany Hamilton. She is amazing. I look up to her for her courage, strength, and faith. Also, she is very kind and generous and helps out with a ton of charities.

Q. Any advice to other surfers out there looking to improve their skills? A. I think it is really important to skateboard because it helps with runs and cut-backs. Also, running helps because it keeps your heart and lungs in shape.

Q. What’s the biggest wave you’ve ever surfed (feet)? A. The biggest wave I have ever surfed was probably about 6 feet. It was on a big day at Oceanside, it was really exhilarating. I didn’t even realize how big it was until afterwards sdnor thcountykids.com

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! As December approaches, The Rock Church begins to prepare for its annual Toys for Joy event. This community event aims to bring hope and joy to underprivileged children and families throughout San Diego by providing toys, food and clothing. Thanks to several generous community members, last year over 8,000 toys, 12,000 bags of groceries and 130,000 articles of clothing were donated to over 9,000 families in need. Starting at 4am, families line up for hours so their children can receive one toy for Christimas and it was no different for the Zamora family. On Dec. 17, 2011, nine-year-old Nancy Zamora generously gave a bike she won through a Toys for Joy raffle to her three-year-old sister, Blanca Zamora. Coincidently, Nancy’s younger brother Sergio Zamora also won a bike, but instead decided to give it to Nancy, leaving him without one. After hearing about Sergio’s kind-hearted gesture, Pastor Miles McPherson paid the Zamora family a visit to deliver an unexpected and well-deserved Christmas gift: a bike for Sergio. “I have never seen little kids think about someone else, usually little kids are about me, me, me, me, me,” states Pastor Miles. “…they thought about their siblings. I think it’s a great story of unselfish love.” For more information on how to get involved with this year’s Toys for Joy event, please visit . . .

My Amazing Thanksgiving Fill in the blanks with the appropriate parts of speech to create your own silly story!

Teaching Lessons in Gratitude Lately I’ve been hearing a common gripe among my friends with young ones. And I’m saying it right along with them, “My kids don’t appreciate how lucky they are, and they always want more.” I don’t know about you, but I’m thinking that sentiment probably applies to most adults as well. If it were considered socially acceptable, I’m pretty sure I’d beg my dinner hosts for more dessert. If I had no concept of how hard-earned money is, I’d probably want to buy another new sweater — even though I just got a super cute one. If I didn’t have a pile of dishes to do and dinner to cook, I’d definitely want to hit the park/pool/friend’s house yet again today. So, yes, it’s understandable. But so is wanting to feel like all we do as parents doesn’t go unnoticed. How about a little gratitude? Is that too much to ask? Forget asking, I’m insisting. I figure if I want my kids to be gracious, I have to teach it. I’m finding it’s not as easy as I thought it would be. Not only do my kids continue to push back on me, I find myself being rather inconsistent. So I figure if I write about it, maybe you all will help hold me accountable.

Here are the few things I’ve started that seem to be working. 5 Good Things. Each night, I’m trying to remember to ask my kids to come up with five things my husband and I did to make their day better. It can be as simple as making breakfast (which it almost always is), but at least it gets the kids in a constructive pattern of thinking about how others’ actions positively impact their day. Meal Thanks. My friend is amazing at this, and I’m following her lead. At the end of every meal, rather than running off, I’m making my kids look the “host” (which is usually me) in the eye, and say, “Thank you for lunch. May I be excused?” For the most part my answer is, “Yes you may. Please clear your plate.” Sometimes I ask them to eat a bit more or join the rest of us a bit longer, but just being asked in a nice way makes saying “yes” far less cringe-worthy. Believe it or not, even three-and-a-half-year-old Little is doing a great job with this one. Justifying “More”. Rather than begging for more, I’m trying to teach my kids to think about what they’ve enjoyed so they can express that in the quest for more. For instance, “That cookie was delicious. May I have another one?” Or, “I’m having so much fun with these Star Wars guys. If I can get more, I’ll be able to have even better battles.” The answer isn’t always yes, and the reaction isn’t always pretty, but at least there’s an acknowledgement that there’s gratitude for what they did get and a “why” to the “more”. Goodness knows there will be days these tricks fail me, or I fail myself by getting too relaxed about them. But they’re a good start.

How do you teach your kids gratitude and manage the ever-present gimmes?
