appy March everyone! Winter has passed, spring is on the horizon, and days are (thankfully) growing longer and longer! Mardi Gras lands on March 4th and is French for Fat Tuesday, referring to the practice of the last night of eating richer, fatty foods before the ritual fasting of the Lenten season, which begins on Ash Wednesday. We can definitely help you out with some “fatty” recipes on our Pinterest page to fully indulge in before you fast! Then on March 17th we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with green beer and Corned Beef and Hash. This sounds like a month of eating, eh? We’re in. Warm weather is also approaching which means spring and summer planning is on the horizon. We’ve included an amazing Summer Camp Guide that spotlights some of our top spring and summer camp recommendations for you and your family. Be sure to also read the always funny Down to Earth Dad who exposes what parents secretly do for their kids (sell Girl Scout cookies, build science projects… sound familiar?) Also take a look at some fun and helpful apps in A is for App, all centered around the great outdoors and camping tips for the whole family. For ideas regarding your next local family outing, flip to our packed Local Events Calendar and also check out what celebs have to say about vacation in our Celeb Tracker… you might be surprised by some! As always, take a peek at our kid spotlights and be prepared to be amazed at the local talent!

Lauren Fleming Age: 18 Grade: 12th Grade School: Steele Canyon High School Hobbies: Ballet, Singing, Reading, and All Things Disney Favorite Food: Cheddar Cheese Favorite thing about living in San Diego: Going to the Beach Favorite Beach: Fletcher’s Cove Favorite Restaurant: Buca di Beppo

Who is your inspiration/role model? My mom. She is everything I want to be as a person.

Q&A

How long have you been dancing? 13 years. I started taking ballet classes at San Diego Civic Youth Ballet when I was 4, and have stuck with it ever since. What do you love the most about dancing? Performing! I love being able to put a smile on someone’s face. What do you love most about the San Diego Civic Youth Ballet program? The vibe – it’s very close, inclusive, and drama-free. Do you ever get nervous before a performance? If so, what do you do to relax? Yes – all the time! But you stop being nervous when you’re on stage. You are still kind of nervous, but it’s O.K.; you know what you are doing because you have been training for that moment for so long. Which performance stands out as your favorite so far? The last production of Cinderella in 2010. I played one of the stepsisters, which has been my favorite role to date. The stepsisters are the comedy of the

show, and the role requires lots of improvisation and acting. It was a blast! What is the most difficult thing about being a ballet dancer? Finding balance with everything else in your schedule; you definitely have to make sacrifices. You have to learn to be O.K. with saying, “No, I can’t spend the night. No, I can’t go to that party – I have ballet.” How did you react when you learned you would be dancing the role of Cinderella? I was with my best friend when my mom texted me, “O.K. Don’t freak out...” and she took forever to send the rest of the message. But when we read that I was cast as Cinderella, my friend screamed and then I screamed. It was totally unexpected, so I was really excited! What are you looking forward to most about dancing the role of Cinderella? Partnering and being bullied by the stepsisters. We are all friends, so it makes it really funny.

So you are graduating from high school this year. What are your plans for the future? Go to college and study Astronautical Engineering. My dream is to be the person who designs spacecraft! I always liked math and astronomy, so I decided to put those two together and make a career out of it. What advice do you have for other kids looking to start dancing? If you want to, then make it happen! Don’t let anything stop you from doing it. NCK

Don’t miss seeing the North County Kid of the Month, Lauren Fleming, performing on stage in Cinderella in April! The production runs April 2-April 6 with special show dates for Schools and Girl Scouts. Tickets are just $10$15 and can be purchased online at www.sdcyb.org or by phone (619) 233-3060. Be sure to LIKE San Diego Civic Youth Ballet on Facebook and find them on Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest @SDCYBallet. San Diego Civic Youth Ballet is the resident classical ballet school in Balboa Park since 1945. To learn more about what they do for your community, visit www.sdcyb.org or call (619) 233-3060. Adventure

Summer Camp Adventures Like No Other

S

pring is in the air, but most parents’ minds are on summer— especially kids camps. These days there are many options to choose from, but few will have campers interacting with rare and exotic wildlife like the camps at both the San Diego Zoo and the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. The enthusiastic staff at both sites know kids as well as they do animals, and the result is a variety of hands-on, join-in, be-a-part-of-it fun for young kids, tweens, and teens. Zoo Fun At the Zoo, the five-day adventures include tons of fun—animal encounters, behind-the-scenes visits, bus rides, games, and crafts. Every day is action-packed with exploration. Kindergarteners will be busy meeting all kinds of critters from the Zoo’s amazing alphabet of animals. First graders take a close look at mammals from the mini to the massive, while other grades focus on flying friends, get to know some wildlife “weirdos,” and explore animal behavior and zoo careers. The challenges of being a teen today aren’t always fun, but the Zoo has one that is—Teen Survivor Challenge. It’s the ultimate summer camp experience, where fantasy meets imagination and dreams become reality. Each day campers will participate in action-oriented activities that take them into a keeper’s or animal’s world. For artists in grades 1-3, the Zoo offers a special Art Camp with a professional art teacher to bring out a child’s creative side, with the help of close-up animal encounters. Each day is filled with sketching opportunities and other fun art-making experiences.

Safari Park Adventures The San Diego Zoo Safari Park has both day camps and overnight camps for kids eager to immersive themselves in the world of wildlife. The Park is their “home” as they trek to private animal encounters, behind-the-scenes areas, and even caravan trucks into the field enclosures. Campers become a part of it all as they get to know the animals and keepers. In addition to fun during the daylight hours, youngsters in grades 3-8 can double their fun by making themselves at home at a week-long overnight camp. Waking up to roaring lions, late-night Park prowls, and s’mores around the campfire add a special feel to the experience. At a time in their life when many teens are trying to figure out what their future will be, many think about working with animals. The Park’s Work on the Wild Side day camp offers them a way to explore the various paths they might take. They’ll meet professionals in all area of animal care and conservation, and find out what zookeeping is really like firsthand through one-on-one job shadowing. Spending consecutive days (and in some cases, nights!) at the Zoo and the Park is a different, much richer experience than when visiting with family or school. Campers enjoy experiences most people never have, and it leaves a mark. As one parent shared “This camp was an inspiration and really nurtured her deep love for wildlife and our natural world.” NCK For detailed information about summer camp options and to reserve space, visit the websites at sandiegozoo.org/education/summer_camp and sdzsafaripark.org/education/summer or call 619-718-3000. Q&A

Starting Competing: 2008 Favorite Surf Spot: Seaside Long board or short board: Short board

How has living in North County affected your surfing career? North County has a great variety of waves, which helps me become a better surfer. When I first started surfing, I remember my dad pushing me into the waves at Beacons. As I improved, I moved south to the better waves at Seaside Reef.

improve their skills? The best advice I can give is to just have fun! When you love what you do, you always find ways to improve and get better. Listen to your coach, practice and enjoy each contest, especially during the highs of winning. I think the key to the competitions is to stay humble but keep fighting.

Who are some local pros and companies that have helped you in your achievements? I have been so blessed to have so many awesome sponsors and mentors throughout the years. Dan Mori, the owner of Fulcrum Surf, John Daniels of Learn to Rip, and Sean Madison from the USA Surf Team gave me the instruction and confidence I needed to really take my surfing to the competitive level. I also get inspired surfing amongst local and visiting pros at my favorite surf spot. Hansen’s Surf Shop has been a long time supporter and now has given me the opportunity to work for their amazing company.

What do you love the most about surfing? Surfing for me is pure joy and an escape from all my worries. It’s so awesome to get in the water and enjoy all that God has created for me. I really like competing as well. It’s a chance to push myself and be pushed by my competitors.

Any advice to other surfers out there looking to

Have you ever had any shark run-ins? Other sea creatures? No, but I have been chased by a couple of seals.

Who is your favorite pro-surfer? My favorite surfer is Jordy Smith. I like that he is a power surer yet is also one of the most progressive athletes. Where is your go-to surf gear shop? The BEST surf shop is Hansen’s in Encinitas. What’s the biggest wave you’ve ever surfed? The biggest wave I ever surfed was just recently at Blacks in La Jolla. It was double overhead and so fun! Is there anything else you would like to add? I just like to thank God for creating the beautiful ocean for my enjoyment and for my parents who sacrificed a lot for me to be able to drive up and down the coast to compete. I am so glad my dad introduced me to this sport when I was just 2 years old and I have been hooked ever since! NCK

Where do you see yourself professionally in 5 years? I hope to be surfing for a competitive team in college. I am interested in Channel Islands or University of Santa Barbara. March 2014 | North County Kids

Happy St. Patrick’s Day & Camping Helpers

Survival skills are techniques a person may use in a dangerous situation (e.g. natural disasters) to save themselves or others. Generally speaking, these techniques are meant to provide the basic necessities for human life: water, food, shelter, habitat, and the need to think straight, to signal for help, to navigate safely, to avoid unpleasant interactions with animals and plants, and for first aid. In addition, survival skills are often basic ideas and abilities that ancient humans had to use for thousands of years, so these skills are partially a reenactment of history.

Book Review

Megan Rath is a wife and mom of a 8 year old daughter and 4 year old son. She is the organizer of the Hip Chicks Book Club (www.meetup.com/hipchicksbookclub), a large group of diverse women of all ages that meets in North County every month. A native of North County all her life, she currently lives in Vista.

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones by Cassandra Clare After Clary Fray witnesses the murder of a demon by a group of teenagers called Shadowhunters, her seemingly normal life is turned upside down. Now the Shadowhunters, whom she has a strange connection to, especially their sometimes-leader Jace, will have to help Clary find her kidnapped mother, get back a sacred cup, and figure out why she can all of a sudden see things that she once thought were only found in stories. Although it’s not a literary classic by any means, this book was actually pretty enjoyable, save for the plot twist at the end that grossed me out a little. I’m definitely looking forward to the next books in this series.

I give this book a BIf you enjoyed this book, check out the next in installment in The Mortal Instruments series, City of Ashes.

North County Kids | March 2014

Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter In 1962, when Italian hotel owner Pasquale Tursi meets the hopeful American film actress Dee Moray, who is in Italy to film Cleopatra, he falls instantly in love. But soon secrets are revealed, and she is forced back to America by the film’s producer, Michael Deane. Fifty years later, Pasquale, Michael Deane, Deane’s assistant Claire, and screenwriter/ Italian translator Shane, embark on a journey to reunite Pasquale with Dee, whom he hasn’t stopped thinking about over the last half century. I love anything to do with old Hollywood, so this book was for the most part, just lovely. The writing was very vivid, which made up for the few “dry” spots, most of which had to do with Claire’s and Shane’s storylines. I also loved that the author used Richard Burton as a minor character with a big impact on the story.

I give this book a B+

no, I’m not talking about bragging rights and social status for the kids in my school. I’m talking about bragging rights and social status for the dads of the kids in my school. Do you know the John Mellencamp song Small Town? Well, that was literally my town. And in my town all of the dads were blue collar guys who knew their way around a bandsaw and a block plane. These guys could chisel a Ferrari out of a chunk of wood. All of them except for one – my dad. My pop was a blue collar guy just like the other dads. He had a set of Craftsman tools in the garage and dirt under his fingernails. On paper you’d think he would be able to assemble an amazing Pinewood Derby car. And I am sure if he really had wanted to build a cool car he could have easily done so. But when it came time to make my car he told me that he didn’t have the time to build it, which I painfully knew wasn’t true. Now, this is the part in my story where I grit my teeth and start to hum Cats in the Cradle by Harry Chapian, while I get slightly angry and my eyes water a bit. But I digress, back to 1982.

While Eric Handy’s dad was meticulously carving small cylinders into the undercarriage of his son’s car, so he could insert lead fishing sinkers in the attempt to achieve perfect weight and balance, my dad was at the local watering hole and I was alone in my garage trying to build my car without chopping my fingers off. The car I ultimately brought to the competition looked a lot like the block of wood you pulled directly out of the kit, marginally improved with a sloppy coat of blue paint and four plastic tires that had been nailed on in a slapdash manner. It wasn’t fast and it didn’t look good. Needless to say, I did not win any trophies that day. But what really stung – and this memory has been burned into my brain for the last 30 years – was when a bunch

of Webelos taunted me and laughed at my pathetic car. Occasionally my wife gives me grief because she thinks I suffer from irrational exuberance when I help my kids with their school projects. And I admit that sometimes I go over the top a smidgen. There was the time, for example, when my daughter had to make a turkey out of construction paper for a Thanksgiving project in kindergarten. What she turned in was an elaborate turkey

made out of pieces of leather I cut from an old football, a perfect representation of the symbiosis between a classic American holiday and a classic American sport. Apparently, the teacher didn’t think a 6-year-old was capable or grasping that concept. So, when I sell 100 boxes of Girl Scout cookies to my coworkers it’s not because I support the mission of the organization, or because I want our local troop to raise enough money to go to surf camp. I’m hawking those

Do-si-dos to compensate for the fact that my dad couldn’t find the time to help me with my Pinewood Derby car. And that concludes this month’s psychoanalysis of The Down to Earth Dad. Now, I’ve got to go and build a 4th grade mission – and it’s going to be fabulous! NCK The Down-To-Earth-Dad is a lawyer by day and youth soccer coach by night. He lives in Carlsbad with his wife and two kids.

Special-Needs Kids and Their Families Made to Feel Special... Because They Are by Sydney Davison

L

inda Martin believes every child is a miracle, even — or perhaps especially — those who have special needs. She also believes houses of faith should reflect and operate based on that belief. After all, it’s right there in the Bible. “Body and soul, I am marvelously made,” says Psalm 139:14. However, Martin, a certified music therapist, has witnessed too many families with special-needs children who would struggle on Sundays to be able to participate in services or Sunday school. So she launched a ministry at the Rock Church called Miracle 139. The goal of Miracle 139 is to ensure that church is a place where everyone feels safe and welcome, where families can learn and have fellowship with one another. On Sunday no one is turned away or asked to leave, and everyone has the opportunity to hear the mes-

30

North County Kids | March 2014

sage and have fun. The ministry also supports families any way they can. Martin says the Rock’s main campus, located in the Liberty Station area of Point Loma, and their newest satellite campus in El Cajon, provide specialized classrooms for children with special needs, whether the family regularly attends the Rock or not. The church wants each child to receive an equal opportunity to learn about the love of Jesus, no matter their ability or disability. The children’s lessons focus on repetition and practice to make sure that the children have a better opportunity to learn and retain the message that they are being taught and for it to be “written on their heart,” said Martin. The volunteers have been specially trained and have backgrounds in special education, behavioral therapy, and psychology. Martin says that the one-to-one ratio is key.

Having enough volunteers to accommodate their classes and have students with a volunteer buddy for support is what makes their Sunday lessons achievable. “God has brought an amazing team and blessed us with an amazing group of volunteers (who) have a sincere love, “ said Martin. On an average Sunday 25 kids attend Miracle 139. The ministry doesn’t end on Sundays, though. It holds a Bible study every other Thursday to give support to parents or guardians, and stages date nights every couple months. “Another major benefit is connection with other faith families,” Martin said. Being able to provide families with a support group and a time of fellowship together is another goal of Miracle 139. The Rock also reaches out to other local San Diego churches, offering training to better equip them for special education students and programs. For more information about Miracle 139, visit www.sdrock.com/ministries/miracle139. NCK
