Rancho Encinitas acadEmy Excellence in Teaching • Excellence in Learning Rancho Encinitas Academy is a private school that serves students from K through grade 8. Nestled in the beautifully landscaped campus is the sister school, Edison Academy, that serves students with mild to moderate learning challenges. The mission of both programs is to nurture a student’s natural wonder and joy of learning, facilitated by a highly creative staff. Quality education at these schools prepares a student for the challenges of the future by fostering knowledge, creativity and self-reliance. There are seven separate buildings custom designed and constructed especially for the school. The campus with its architecture, landscaping, and proximity to the ocean is conducive to a safe, relaxed, and tranquil learning experience. The campus was specifically designed to reduce stress and anxiety so that a student’s focus can be on learning.

appy summer everyone! From sun-kissed skin after long days at beach to neighborhood BBQs and the permanent smell of chlorine in your kids’ hair, we are stoked that June is here! This month we focus our appreciation on our wonderful dads and celebrate Father’s Day on June 15th, followed by the official first day of summer, June 21st. We also round out the season with our last and final Summer Camp Guide on page 11. Not only is June the kick-off of summer, but it is also a very busy month for birthday parties! Fear not, we highlight some of our favorite birthday party venues and entertainment on our Birthday Party Guide on page 18. We also have some really fun Father’s Day features such as Pinterest: Father’s Day Edition on page 5, Apps for Dad on page 26, and Down to Earth Dad: Brick to the Future on page 29… just to name a few. As always we included some remarkable locals in our North County Kid of the Month on page 5, Surfer of the Month on page 23, Skateboarder of the Month on page 20, and our Hero of the Month on page 30. Thank you so much for being such an awesome North County Kids reader and please let me know if you have any questions, suggestions, or comments!

Q&A

When did you start playing golf? When I was 6. What do you love about golf that makes it stand out from other sports? I enjoy the combination of both mental and physical prowess needed to play well. How often do you practice? Every day except before final exams. What is the best golf advice you’ve ever heard? Keep it simple! At just 15 years old you were invited to Augusta to compete on national television on the Sunday before Masters week. What did you do to earn this honor? I had to go through local and regional qualifying events.

How did the Drive, Chip and Putt competition in Augusta go? I actually didn’t perform as well as I wanted. Where do you hope to be in 5 years, in terms of your golf career? Playing golf in college. What advice do you have for kids who want to get into golfing? Don’t think, just play – and have fun! Is there anything else you would like to add? Anything you want to share with our readers? If you don’t already play golf, try it out. It is a great way to meet new people, spend time with friends and family, and have fun. NCK

Celeb Tracker Happy Father’s Day! See what these stars have to say about Fatherhood!

“There’s something comforting in a house full of kids. It surprises me, because I usually like being alone, but I’m really loving it.” Patrick Dempsey

“Every day I’m proud to be a dad. When you have kids, there’s no such thing as quality time. There’s just time. There’s no, ‘Ooh, his graduation is better than going to the mall.’ It’s all kind of equal. Changing her diaper and her winning a contest — it’s all good.” Chris Rock

“When we were visiting New York City, I took my kids to the same playground where I went growing up. It was fun to feel that connection of having gone there as a kid and being there as a parent.” Ben Stiller

“Fatherhood is the best thing I ever did. It changes your perspective. You can write a book, you can make a movie, you can paint a painting, but having kids is really the most extraordinary thing I have taken on.”

“Huck’s going to get stuff I want; that’s what’s going to be funny. ‘Look, Star Wars figures!’ I know it’s for ages 4 and up, but still, I will play with them until he’s old enough.” Brad Paisley

“Men should always change diapers. It’s a very rewarding experience. It’s mentally cleansing. It’s like washing dishes, but imagine if the dishes were your kids, so you really love the dishes.” Chris Martin

Brad Pitt

“Having children is like living in a frat house — nobody sleeps, everything’s broken, and there’s a lot of throwing up.” Ray Romano

“Your marriage goes to a whole new level. You not only fall in love with your wife in a new way, but you’re forced to pull together. You have to become a united front.” Hugh Jackman

Students who struggled before they attended NewBridge School. Today’s classrooms are big, busy, and fast. Many students struggle with the rigorous academic requirements, not because of intelligence, or motivation. In most cases, no one ever taught these students how to learn efficiently and effectively. At NewBridge School, highly-trained teachers work in small classrooms to teach research-based learning strategies. Targeted, systematic instruction gives students the know-how, ability and condence to achieve. We specialize in teaching students with language-based difficulties, such as dyslexia, and those with executive functioning difficulties, such as memory and attention. Our students become successful learners, then transition into some of the best private and public high schools and colleges. “These are talented young boys and girls who, with the right tools, will succeed anywhere,” says director Steven Mayo. “Our job is to give them the tools, then help them transition into larger, challenging academic programs.” NewBridge Learning Center provides intensive 1:1

Career Highlights 2nd place Spine Ramp at the Shane Hidalgo Contest

Q&A

How has living in North County affected your skating career? I feel lucky to live in North County because of all the skate parks and local skate companies near by. Who are some local pros and companies that have helped you in your achievements? Skateboarding Pro Oscar Jordan and Aura Training Facility have helped me a lot. Both have helped me learn new tricks and progress at a rapid pace. Where do you see yourself professionally in 5 years? I see myself competing more and hopefully being sponsored by a few companies.

20

North County Kids | June 2014

What’s your favorite after-school snack? I love quesadillas. Do you get nervous before every competition? If so, what do you do to relax and calm your nerves? I do get nervous. To calm myself down, I just take deep breaths, stay confident and tell myself that I am going to do well. What advice do you have for other kids thinking about learning how to skateboard? I would say, ‘Go for it!’ It’s going to be a little hard in the beginning, but it will be all fun after that. Don’t give up.

and hobbies, can you tell our readers about those? Right now I play competitive soccer and I like filming and taking pictures of myself and my friends skating. How do you juggle your other interests and skateboarding? Sometimes juggling everything is really hard. I just make skating my priority and skate as much as I can. Is there anything else you want to add? I would like to say thank you to my parents, Aura Training Facility and my awesome friends for all of their encouragement and support! NCK

Get Your Good Sleep On!

I

t’s not news that new (and seasoned) parents have a general lack of good sleep. Summer’s three months of extra daylight hours and children’s offschool sleep patterns (or lack of sleep patterns) typically erase routines and any hope for adequate amounts of good sleep.
Among many benefits, getting good sleep activates a complicated process that leaves your body and brain rested and healthy the next day, both necessities of busy, multi-tasking parents. A bad night’s sleep has shown to contribute toward a lower level of brain function throughout the day. Although we can’t make your children sleep when you want to sleep, we can shed some light on sleep and how to do it best thanks to wellknown local Sleep-Posture Expert, Dr Rick Loos. Why is good sleep so important?
Sleep recharges the body and brain from each day’s hard work. It’s the only time of day when the body has a chance to rest and recover. It’s also the brain’s time to process all the thoughts and information running through our minds. What prevents you from getting a good sleep?
An over active mind, excessive caffeine or alcohol consumption, electronics, noise, light, hormones, and stress can all prevent you from good and/or adequate sleep. About Sleep Posture... What sabotages your spine’s alignment?
Gravity, poor posture, modern day lifestyle (lots of sitting and driving), poor sleeping habits (sleep position, and the other good sleep prevention items I listed above), and the use of regular foam, feather, or fiber fill pillows. Which pillows are good and which are not?
Likely, it is time to break-up with your current pillow(s). Typically pillows are poorly designed. They tend to be over or under supportive and they come in a variety of shapes and sizes. These designs don’t take the human bodies natural shape and curve into consideration and often reverse the curve as demonstrated in the X-Ray photos here.

What health problems are caused by an unsupported spine?
Some of the health problem include: neck pain, back pain, stiffness, numbness, headaches, and herniated discs. We definitely want to avoid those health issues and get a good night’s sleep. So, what now? Sleep with the Proper Pillow, a sleep-posture pillow product that I created and put on the market a few years ago. It’s the only supportive, spine-aligning pillow like it and here is why it works: • the cut of the pillow layers support your body’s natural curve • your neck and spine is in proper alignment (see X-Ray photo)
 • an inner orthotic foam blend adjusts to sleeping position on side or back
 • a stay cool comfort layer allows for continuous airflow and temp regulation • the removable quilted outer cover can be washed in a standard washing machine

Great news! How can we get one today? Visit www.properpillow.com for all the info. and to place an order.
We’re offering 20% off pillows during the month of June with code NCKJUNE! Like us on Facebook at facebook. com/ProperPillow anytime in June and one lucky Facebook fan will WIN a pillow on June 30th!

SUNDAY SAFE AND FUN: THE ROCK CHURCH CHILDREN’S MINISTRY

V

alentin Diaz knows that children are our future and he has a love and a passion for teaching them. As a volunteer in the children’s ministry of the Rock Church, Diaz has a contagious attitude that influences his fellow volunteers and inspires families and the community. “If I had one hope for these kids,” said Diaz,

“it would be them leaving and them understanding that God loves them and God has a plan for their life.” The Rock Church’s goal every Sunday is to foster a family environment where every child from age one year to fifth grade can find a place to belong. At its North County site (as well as the original Point Loma location and a new site in East County) dedicated volunteers and trained staff work to help kids learn the stories of the Bible and the good news of Jesus Christ and His love. It’s not day care but it’s safe and creative and a lot of fun. Rock volunteers like Diaz love being with kids and teaching them God’s Word. “They are just so fun to hang around. What they are experiencing is the Word at their level,” said Diaz, who last November was honored as a Rock Hero. Diaz focuses on making Bible teachings

more relatable to kids. Through his methods he tries to make the messages easy for the children to understand and applicable in their everyday application. “He makes the word alive and relevant to [the kids]. Church is happening in their everyday lives,” said Christina Paiva, Rock Kids Elementary Worship Service Producer. “Diaz has a love for the children and works hard to be an encouragement to each and every one of them.” The Rock Church children’s services are offered during worship services at 8AM, 10AM, 12PM, and 5PM. “We have such a responsibility to train them up right, and what better way to start then in Children’s Ministry,” said Diaz. Q&A

How has living in North County affected your surfing career? North County has so many different spots with several types of waves from Seaside to Trestles in the far North County. We have beach breaks that help when training for afternoon contest heat conditions. Then there are reefs and point breaks that allow you to really work on your flow and style. Who are some local pros and companies that have helped you in your achievements? How? When I was younger, we would always go to Cardiff Reef. So growing up I was able to watch Joel Tudor and Ryan Burch who have so much style. They are fun to watch. Local reps were always around as well and would help me out with supplies. Ricky Irons sent me to my first Surfer Poll awards when I was 8. I was able to meet all of the pros and felt what it would be like to be a part of the surfing community. Big thanks to Scott O, Sandra D, Greg Sauritch, the Hansen family, and crews at Matuse, Sanuk, and Volcom. Special Thanks to Rick Devoe for my first sponsor when I was 6. Any advice to other surfers out there looking to improve their skills? Surf as much as you can and have fun. When it is not fun anymore, that is when you need to step back and remember

Started Surfing: 2005

why you started surfing in the first place. From a competitive side, when free surfing I try to always work on something new (going backside, working on a cutback, body mechanics, equipment, etc). Surfing all kinds of waves helps from a contest perspective as well. If you want to take competitive surfing as far as you can, get a good coach to help you fine tune your surfing and heat strategies. Also, I like to switch up my activities – add in some sort of cross training soccer, basketball, volleyball, track etc. This will help with the cardio element of your surfing. What do you love the most about surfing? Why? Well, surfing is really fun! It feels so good in the water to know you are going to do something new each day. Surfing lets me be myself and express my personality. Surfing is really good for you and many long friendships come out of surfing! Have you ever had any shark run-ins? Other sea creatures? I have only seen leopard sharks and sand sharks in the water. I did see a lot of sea turtles in Mexico and Hawaii while surfing. But my mom has a really cool photo she took of me at Rincon where two dolphins are jumping completely out of the water about 20 yards from me.

Starting Competing: 2006 Hobbies: Surfing, skating, skiing, soccer, art, hanging out with friends Favorite Surf Spot: Seaside, Swamis, D Street Long board or short board: Short

Where do you see yourself professionally in 5 years? I will be a senior in high school trying to figure out what is next. Perhaps I will be playing collegiate soccer somewhere along the coast. But before that (in the next few years) I am planning on surfing some Junior Pro and Women’s Star events to see where that might lead. I dream of being on the Women’s ASP, so that is definitely a goal of mine Who is your favorite pro-surfer? Lots of favorites: Kelly Slater, Claire Bevilacqua, Carissa Moore, and Lakey Peterson Where is your go-to surf gear shop? That is easy,…. has to be Hansen’s!!!!! Hansen’s is the best shop in San Diego and has everything you need for surfing. They also have a great selection of ski and snowboard equipment. What’s the biggest wave you’ve ever surfed? Maybe about 8 foot in mainland Mexico. Is there anything else you would like to add? Thanks to my mom for taking me surfing every day. Thanks to my dad for teaching me how to surf. Thanks to my sponsors , coaches, and mentors. NCK June 2014 | North County Kids

Book Review

Megan Rath is a wife and mom of a 8 year old daughter and 4 year old son. She is the organizer of the Hip Chicks Book Club (www.meetup.com/hipchicksbookclub), a large group of diverse women of all ages that meets in North County every month. A native of North County all her life, she currently lives in Vista.

Confessions of a Jane Austen Addict by Laurie Viera Rigler Being a Jane Austen fan myself, I was really hoping to love this book. It has some really good elements, like a romance similar to Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennett, and of course traveling back to Jane Austen’s time. But the author’s writing was a little vague, especially in the end, and I was left wanting a little more from the story.

I give this one a C. If you liked this book, or Jane Austen’s work in general, I highly suggest the British television mini-series, Lost in Austen, which I discovered at my local library.

An Abundance of Katherines by John Green After winning a game show for “Smart Kids”, former child prodigy Colin Singleton (who has dated and been dumped by nineteen girls named Katherine throughout his 18 years of life) and his best friend embark on a road trip with Colin’s game show winnings. Although this is an awardwinning book, I’m really torn between liking it and disliking it. I really like John Green’s writing style, and the story itself is, for the most part, entertaining and well rounded. But Colin is so whiny, and actually really annoying, especially with his anagramming everything, and trying to predict how long a relationship will last through a math theorem, that it’s hard to get through at times.

I give this book a C+. If you liked this book, I definitely recommend The Fault in Our Stars, also by John Green. It is a great book.

Down To Earth Dad

Brick to the Future

W

photos by the Down to Earth Dad and son

henever I hear the opening chords to the song The Power of Love by Huey Lewis & The News I am transported back in time – no Flux Capacitor required – to the summer of 1985, sitting in a movie theater with my buddies, getting ready to watch Back to the Future for the third time. Over the past 30 years I’ve probably watched Back to the Future 1,000 times, and for the longest period I just couldn’t put my finger on why this particular movie has such a hold over me. I solved the mystery a few years ago when I read an interview with the film’s screenwriter Bob Gale. He explained that the premise for the movie originated after he found his father’s old high school yearbook and discovered that his dad had been the president of his graduating class. Bob Gale had never known that fact about his dad, and he wondered if he had gone to high school at the same time with his dad, if they would have been friends. After reading Bob Gale’s interview it became clear to me – Back to the Future is about a son’s quest to find friendship with his father, and the reason I am so drawn to the movie is because I can vicariously experience the father and son relationship between Marty and George McFly.

You see, my dad never really wanted to be my friend. He didn’t think that was his job as a parent. He had more of a Boy Named Sue philosophy to fatherhood, where he purposely did things to make me tough, because he understood the world can be a hard place and toughness is a valuable commodity. I can appreciate this approach to parenting, but I don’t necessarily want to repeat it. Now, I don’t claim to be an expert in parenting, but my personal philosophy is that being friends with our kids – at least to some degree – is a good thing. I understand this can be tricky business. If you’re too good of friends they won’t respect you, so you have to find the right balance. I try to find this balance by taking an active interest in the hobbies my kids enjoy now: LEGOs, guitar and soccer. It’s my hope that the time we spend doing these activities today will turn into a lifelong friendship. So what would I like this month for Father’s Day? Well, for now I just want to spend time with my kids building things out of LEGOs. But the gift I really want is in the future: when my kids inevitably discover my old high school yearbooks, I don’t want them to sit around and wonder if we could have been friends in a different time, under different circumstances. At what age did you become a Navy SEAL? I entered the SEAL training program at 25 and turned 26 while in training. What inspired you to become a SEAL? I was working as a CPA in New York City after graduating from Colgate University. I was very frustrated by the greed and lack of authenticity I saw in the financial world there. I was inspired by a SEAL recruiting video titled “Be Someone Special” and thought that I did not feel special grubbing for money…leading others as a SEAL officer sounded pretty special so I went for it!

a SEAL every day to increase my confidence and chances of success. In training my sense of “been there, done that” helped me earn the title of “honor man” (#1 graduate in my class).

Tell us one of the most important lessons you learned as a SEAL. I learned so many lessons as a SEAL – here are just a few of them.

What advice do you have for young men (and women) interested in becoming a SEAL? Begin your physical, mental, and moral training now. To be a SEAL you must do the work up front, not wait till you get there and hope you get through. Seek a mentor and training program such as those we offer at www.sealfit.com. Currently only men are allowed in the SEALs, but that doesn’t mean interested ladies should not explore special operations. There are many amazing jobs for females to work alongside SEALs and other special ops units.

1. It is the small things that count the most. Every day in SEAL training we had to shine our boots and clean our gear. Initially they seemed like mindless tasks. I soon noticed that the guys with the best maintained gear, also performed better. If you take care of the little things in life, the big things tend to take care of themselves.

We know that you are an author of 3 books, congrats! Can you tell us about each book in one sentence? a. The Way of The SEAL The Way of the SEAL will help leaders from all walks of life learn to think and succeed like an elite warrior.

2. Everyone needs a swim buddy. In SEAL training we were paired up with a “swim buddy.” We were never to be more than 15 feet from our swim buddy in the water and on land during most events. This seemed like an unreasonable request however, my swim buddy and I came to rely on each other, and in many instances we carried each other across the finish line. I learned how important it is to not try to go it alone in life.

b. Unbeatable Mind Unbeatable Mind is my philosophy and toolkit to forge mental toughness and emotional resiliency to be able to conquer any challenge in life.

3. Win in your mind before starting the challenge In SEAL training I visualized myself succeeding as

c. 8 Weeks to SEALFIT 8 Weeks to SEALFIT is a NYT best seller that provides the comprehensive and unconventional functional training program to train your body and mind like a Navy SEAL.

What made you decide to share your knowledge of training to become, and then becoming a SEAL? In 2007 I started SEALFIT with a focus on training SEAL and other special ops candidates. Soon I had people from all walks of life, who were inspired by the training and ethos of SEALFIT, coming to train with me in our 3 day, 1 week and 3 week immersion academies. The positive transformations experienced made me want to share SEALFIT with a broader audience. So I launched my online training academy and first book, Unbeatable Mind. Then I decided to reach business leaders with The Way of the SEAL. Is there a lack of knowledge/literature available to the public on the topics that your books discuss? (were you trying to fill a void?) Yes – there is very little information about integrated warrior development training (which is what I introduce in The Way of the SEAL and Unbeatable Mind). The training is all encompassing combining physical, mental, emotional, intuition and spiritual. Good luck to everyone…Hooyah!
