NCKid

of the Month

Pranav Puttaparthi Hometown: San Diego, California Age: 11 years (12 on August 20th) Grade: Going into 7th School: Meadowbrook Middle School, Poway, CA Hobbies: Reading and writing books and short stories. Also playing video games and publishing them on YouTube.

Q&A

When did your love for writing begin? When I was in first grade, I started doodling in a journal about a kid named Quest Kid who saves the world from bad guys. It wasn’t until 4th grade that I decided to publish an actual book. That story was modified a bit to create Escape the Dimension. What made you decide to write and publish your own book? In 3rd grade, I thought of an idea to write a different doodle story called Conscience. However I couldn’t make it a doodle, so I decided to make it a real book. However, it was abandoned because I didn’t know how to make it into an enjoyable book at that time. We decided to self-publish Escape the Dimension because I didn’t know whether the book was going to be a hit or not. Now we know it is a hit and readers like my writing style. For the second book, I’m planning to approach big publishing companies so they can republish the Escape the Dimension Series. What is your book about? This book is about a kid named Randy who gets kidnapped by a bad man who became the principal of a school and put him into a special alternate reality called The Dimension. Along with his friends,

Jason and Brian, Randy has to escape The Dimension. What is the bad man’s intentions to put the kids in The Dimension? Please follow the series to learn more! How did you come up with the idea/subject of your book? While riding my bike across my elementary school, an idea suddenly flashed into my head. I was planning to make a detective story about a principal kidnapping a kid and it was going to be really exciting considering the abandonment of Conscience. However, after studying a few space books I eventually decided to change the story into a Sci-Fi one. What is the name of your book and where can our readers find it? It’s called Escape the Dimension and you can find it on Amazon/Barnes & Nobles websites. You can also find an electronic copy for Kindle, Nook, iBooks(iPad), EBookPie and more. What kind of feedback have you received from your family and friends? Surprisingly excellent feedback! Everyone thought it was amazing that I wrote a book and wanted to buy it and support me. The youngest person who read the book was 7 years old and the oldest who read it was 58 years old. A lot of people said the book was great which is one of the reasons why we’re selling a lot of copies.

Favorite Food: Chocolate, Chicken Tikki Tenders, and Orange Chicken. Favorite thing about living in North County: The great community, schools and friends. I also enjoy visiting the North County Mall and Carlsbad Outlets. Favorite North County beach: Solana Beach and Carlsbad Beach

Do you have plans to write any other books? Yes. This series is going to contain 4 parts. The first is the one I just wrote. There will be a prequel, Conscience, a sequel, Escape the Dimension 2 Time Paradox, and a mystery finale. Conscience, which I just started writing again, will feature Randy’s father. In Escape the Dimension 2 Time Paradox, father and son meet. I can’t spoil anything about the final one, although I can say there will be a battle between planets. We hear that you are consistently an honor student at your school. Tell us about the special award you received. I received 2 Honor Roll awards at my school on June 10th. The Honor Roll awards are achieved by getting 3.5 GPA or more. Is there anything else you would like to add? I would like to thank North County Kids Magazine for featuring me as the North County Kid of the Month! I would also like to thank everyone who bought my book by helping, supporting and getting me to where I am today. I would like to thank David Posey, my cover art illustrator, my family for loving me and giving me all the care and support I need, and my friends who encouraged me to the end. NCK

Recipe

4th of July Inspired Recipes Red White and Bruschetta

Cheeseburger Cupcakes

These little cheeseburger cupcakes are made with white cake “buns,” dark chocolate cake “burgers patties” and cheese and condiments made from colored frosting.

Ingredients: • 1 loaf italian bread • 1 1/2 cup grape tomatoes chopped in half • 3/4 cup blueberries • 1 tsp olive oil, plus 1/4 cup • 3/4 cup feta cheese, crumbled • 1 clove garlic • black pepper to taste

Directions: 1. Preheat oven to broil. 2. Slice bread into 1/2 inch thick slices. Lightly brush both sides of the slices of bread with olive oil. Place on a baking sheet and bake for 7 to 10 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from oven and rub one side of bread with garlic. Allow to cool before topping. 3. Mix tomatoes, blueberries, 1 tsp olive oil, feta cheese and black pepper together in a bowl. Place a spoonful unto each slice and enjoy!

Directions: 1. Make a double batch of your favorite white cake cupcake recipe and a single batch of dark chocolate cake 2. Color some white frosting red, green, and yellow (or buy precolored decorator’s frosting in tubes.) 3. Cut the tops from all of your white cupcakes, and from all of your chocolate cupcakes. These will be what you use-- you can freeze the “butts” of your cupcakes for use in something else later on, or make a trifle with them! 4. To assemble: Place a white cupcake top “bun” on the bottom. Add some yellow frosting for cheese. Place your chocolate cupcake top “burger” on top. Add red and green frostings for ketchup and lettuce. Top with another white cupcake “bun.” **You can also use cake mix and bake sheets of cake and cut out circles for the buns and meat with a circle cookie cutter instead of cupcakes. 5. Brush the top “bun” of each cupcake with a touch of melted honey or maple syrup. Sprinkle with sesame seeds, and serve!

Healthy, High-Protein Snacks for Your Busy Family

Between the block parties, parades and late night fireworks, the Fourth of July is an exciting and entertaining yet potentially exhausting holiday. Chef Cheryl Forberg, nutritionist for Omni Hotels and NBC‘s “Biggest Loser,” has four quick and healthy high-protein snacks to keep kids energized. They’re easy to pack and take on the go and contain nearly 150 calories and more than 10 grams of protein so your kids won’t lose their stamina – even if you do! Good Eggs: “Deviled Eggs” — 3 hard boiled egg halves, whites only, each half filled with 1 tablespoon hummus (140 calories, 10 grams protein) Green Gobbling: 2/3 cup edamame in the shell (158 calories, 13 grams protein) String Theory: 1 low-fat mozzarella cheese stick and 1 large fresh orange (140 calories, 10 grams protein) Rye Society: 2 Wasa Rye Crackers and 2-1/2 ounces lox (smoked salmon) (150 calories, 14 grams protein)

And for a healthy, power packed start to the day, try Chef Forberg’s Quinoa breakfast bars. With super charged ingredients like oats, nuts and coconut, you and the kids are guaranteed to have a most spirited star spangled holiday! Quinoa Breakfast Bars (Yield 24 bars)

Ingredients: • Cooking oil spray • 2 ½ cups gluten-free old-fashioned rolled oats (not quick) • ½ cup quinoa flour • ½ cup nonfat dry milk powder • ½ cup unsweetened coconut • ½ cup sliced almonds or chopped pecans • ½ cup chopped dried apples or other dried fruit or berries • ½ cup currants or raisins • ½ teaspoon salt • 1 cup dark honey • ½ cup natural almond butter or peanut butter • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

Directions: 1. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees. Lightly coat a 9 x 13-inch baking pan with cooking oil spray. 2. In a large mixing bowl, measure the rolled oats, quinoa flour, milk powder, coconut, almonds, dried apples, currants, and salt. Stir well to combine and set aside. 3. In a small saucepan, warm the honey and nut butter over low heat, stirring occasionally until blended. Do not boil. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla. 4. Add the warm honey mixture to the dry ingredients and quickly stir the mixture until it’s well combined. The mixture will be sticky but not wet. 5. Pat the mixture into the prepared baking pan and press firmly with your hands to remove any air pockets. 6. Bake the bars until they just begin to brown on the edges, about 25 minutes. 7. Cool for 10 minutes and then cut them into 24 bars, each about 11⁄2 x 21⁄4 inches. 8. When the bars are just cool enough to handle, remove them from the pan to a cooling rack. When they are completely cool, store them in an airtight container. Keep them in the refrigerator for optimal freshness.

Q&A

How has living in North County affected your surfing career? North County has given me a selection of different waves: reefs, beach breaks, and a few point breaks. I especially love the beach lifestyle here. My father says there’s no place like it as far as the consistency of surf, variety of surfing break, and great weather. Our family has lived in North County since the 1870’s for a reason. Who are some local pros and companies that have helped you in your achievements? How? Thanks to Michael Burns from O’Neill in helping me to get a sponsorship from O’Neill Wetsuits. Thanks to Hansen’s for turning me on to Michael Burns and for paying for my contests Photography by Sheri Crummer

and giving me encouragement. Thanks to my Dad who makes my surfboards and gives me advice to improve my surfing. Any advice to other surfers out there looking to improve their skills? • Surf with a buddy who can push your limits. • Keep a positive attitude even when you fall! • If you have a frown, turn it upside down. What do you love the most about surfing? Why? Surfing is always there and it is a life-long activity. I met some of my greatest friends surfing. It also helps me keep things in perspective–I

do some of my best thinking when I’m out in the water. Even during or after a bad day, it all peels off my shoulders when I go out surfing–puts things into perspective. Have you ever had any shark run-ins or other sea creatures? I’ve never felt pain before like I felt when I got stung by a stingray! Where do you see yourself professionally in five years? I will be 18 and it is my goal to be on the ASP World Tour. NCK

Book Review

Megan Rath is a wife and mom of a 8 year old daughter and 4 year old son. She is the organizer of the Hip Chicks Book Club (www.meetup.com/hipchicksbookclub), a large group of diverse women of all ages that meets in North County every month. The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair That Changed America by Erik Larson Being a Jane Austen fan myself, In 1893, Chicago was host to the World’s Fair, where things like Shredded Wheat and the Ferris Wheel were introduced. Daniel Burnham was the visionary behind this huge, obstacleridden undertaking. And at the same time, a few blocks from the fair, another man, Dr. H.H. Holmes, has a vision of his own, one of torture and murder, and becomes the first documented serial killer in America. This was a fascinating read! Although it in non-fiction, it reads like a novel. I did find that Googling images of the buildings and attractions as they were mentioned was very helpful, as there aren’t many photos in the book. And as much as I enjoyed knowing how the fair itself came to be, the parts that focused on Holmes, as sick and creepy as he was, were what I looked forward to reading the most.

I give this book an A. 24

The House at Riverton by Kate Morton In England in the 1910’s, 14-year-old Grace goes to work at Riverton, the large country estate belonging to the Hartford family. As she gets older, she becomes the ladies maid, and confidant, to Lord Hartford’s daughter. Now, at age 98, Grace must recall secrets she’s kept for the family all these years, including events surrounding the night in 1924, when a famous poet committed suicide at Riverton. If you are a fan of Downton Abbey, this is the book for you. Although some aspects were slightly predictable, I really enjoyed the story, and the relationships between the English upper-class and the people who work for them.

I give this book a B. If you liked this book, I definitely recommend The Forgotten Garden, also by Kate Morton.

BEATING SUMMER HUNGER

The Rock Church Donates 17,824 Meals to the San Diego Food Bank

R

ock Church, in partnership with the San Diego Food Bank, held its 6th annual Superhero Food Drive during April and May. The food drive encouraged community members to be real-life heroes by donating food for families in San Diego County—especially for children who cannot rely on free school breakfast and lunch during the summer months. With collection sites at the Rock Church North County as well as its main campus in Point Loma and its new East County location, the Rock Church raised 21,388 pounds of food. This translates to 17,824 meals for families in need in San Diego. “If we do what Jesus commands us to do, there shouldn’t be a hopeless inch of real estate in our community,” said Miles McPherson, senior pastor of the Rock Church. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), 16.2 million children lived in a food-insecure household in 2010. The USDA also reported that 35.1 percent of single-mother households and 25.4 percent of single-fa-

ther households were “food insecure.” A food insecure household is a home where there is uncertainty where its next meal is going to come from. “The San Diego Food Bank serves about 320,000 food-insecure individuals every month,” said Robin Skale, the food procurement coordinator at the San Diego Food Bank. Skale oversees all community food drives, including the Superhero food drive sponsored by Rock Church. “These people include lowincome families, single parent homes, and military families.” Summer is a crucial time for the San Diego Food Bank because the majority of children who receive free lunch during the academic year are not able to receive a free meal during the summer. According to the Food Research and Action Center, six out of seven low-income children who eat a free or reduced-price lunch during the academic year do not get free meal benefits during the summer months. As a result, many parents turn to the San Diego Food Bank especially during this time. “The Food Bank relies on food donations

to supplement meals for these children,” said Skale. “Food drives are an important way our community can help, especially during the summer months.” For more information on helping feed a hungry child in San Diego County, visit http:// sandiegofoodbank.org. NCK

The Rock is San Diego’s largest church. It was started in 2007 by Pastor Miles McPherson, a former NFL player. Over 12,500 people attend the Rock’s five Sunday services online and in person at their multiple campuses. For more information go to www.therocksandiego.org.
