Rancho Encinitas acadEmy Excellence in Teaching • Excellence in Learning Rancho Encinitas Academy is a private school that serves students from K through grade 8. Nestled in the beautifully landscaped campus is the sister school, Edison Academy, that serves students with mild to moderate learning challenges. The mission of both programs is to nurture a student’s natural wonder and joy of learning, facilitated by a highly creative staff. Quality education at these schools prepares a student for the challenges of the future by fostering knowledge, creativity and self-reliance. There are seven separate buildings custom designed and constructed especially for the school. The campus with its architecture, landscaping, and proximity to the ocean is conducive to a safe, relaxed, and tranquil learning experience. The campus was specifically designed to reduce stress and anxiety so that a student’s focus can be on learning.

appy New Year! I hope you had a wonderful holiday season and Santa brought you everything you asked for! With a new year upon us, it is a great time to reflect on the past, and think to the future. I always think of January as the month of endless possibilities and a happy start to another 365 days! The New Year is also always a great time to change those bad habits, or pick up some extra good ones. Our resolution at North County Kids Magazine is to make sure that you know all about the best family-friendly events in North County, and help you enjoy each and every day with your family! With that mindset, this issue is “bulked up” with some great New Years-inspired features such as our Celeb New Year’s Resolution feature, Pinterest Picks, New Year’s Resolutions Mad Lib, and 5 Steps to a New You in the New Year (with an added healthy and tasty recipe). We also hear from our helpful bookworm in the Mom to Mom Book Review, who has great insight into Wild which was recently made into a movie, and our hilarious Down to Earth Dad as he tackles Knotts Berry Farm. As always, we have some very talented young North County-ers that we spotlight as our Surfer of the Month, Skater of the Month, and amazing North County Kid of the Month. There truly are some amazing kids out there! Happy New Year & Enjoy!

Hometown: San Marcos Age: 9 Grade: 4th School: Discovery Elementary Hobbies: Dance, swim, yoga Favorite Food: Escargot (for real!) Favorite thing about living in North County: Being close to the beach

Q&A

When did you start practicing yoga? June 2014. What inspired you to start practicing? My mom is a yoga teacher. Where do you practice? Yoga Six in Carlsbad. What are your favorite yoga positions? Tree, Downward Facing Dog, Handstand, and Sun Salutation. What position do you find difficult/something you are currently working on? King Pigeon, Full Splits on my left side, Firefly (Titibasana), and Bird of Paradise.

Do you prefer hot, warm, or yoga with no heat? Why? Yoga with no heat, definitely. I don’t want to come out steaming hot. Why do you think it’s important for people to practice yoga? If people are stressed out they should take yoga to calm themselves. It helps me stretch out and helps with balance. Would you be interested in teaching yoga in the future? Why or why not? No, because my friend Brianna and I are planning on creating a rock band. Is there anything else you would like to add? Yoga is a really good for you and I think everyone should do it. nck

Do you have a lot of friends that practice yoga too? Yes! January 2015 | North County Kids

New Year, New Resolutions!

“It is so important to me to take time off… When I work so much, I don’t get a lot of sleep, and I think I want to get really fit and in shape and just get really healthy.” Demi Lovato

“New Years resolution? I mean, there’s just nothing wrong with me, I don’t know!” Nicole Richie

“Every year, top of my list of New Year’s resolutions, is eat more healthy, take more exercise, and go to bed early!” Elizabeth Hurley “I once heard a very wise man (Nick Cannon) say: ‘We make time for whatever we want to make time for.’ That was almost ten years ago. I am applying that to my everyday life. And just remembering to be authentic.” Kelly Rowland

“I kind of incorporate resolutions throughout the year. If I think of something good to do, I’ll incorporate it into the system.” Jerry Seinfeld

“[I wish to] stay consistent with my workouts and eat healthy. Being a new mommy, it’s easy to just grab whatever’s there and throw the workout out the window.” Fergie

“My health resolution is to practice mindful eating, a technique my girlfriends and I just learned at Miraval Spa. I am known to scarf down my food and often eat standing up because I’m so busy and now I’ve learned to be mindful by putting my fork down between bites and really savor and appreciate the food that I’m putting in my body.” Giuliana Rancic

Move * Nourish * Believe

Recipe

Lorna Jane Clarkson, founder of multi-award-winning activewear label Lorna Jane, represents more than just clothing. Through her philosophy, “Move Nourish Believe,” Lorna inspires and encourages women all over the world to build Active Living rituals into their day and ultimately achieve their wildest dreams. “Active Living is about getting more out of life by giving more of yourself every day,” she says “and what better time to start this life changing philosophy than at the beginning of a new year!” Here are her top 5 tips for a new ‘Active You’ in 2015.

5 Steps to a New You in the New Year

RECIPE FOR LORNA JANE’S RESCUE SMOOTHIE For a delicious, healthy treat the whole family can enjoy, whip up Lorna Jane’s Rescue Smoothie from her cookbook, Nourish: The Fit Woman’s Cookbook. “Not only is this smoothie so incredibly delicious,” says Lorna, “but the enzymes in the pineapple and the probiotics in the yogurt activate and aid your digestion. Whether you have an important presentation at work or your mini-me has a big day at school, this smoothie is great for calming your nerves and your tummy!” Blend until smooth: • 1 cup (250g) frozen chopped pineapple • 1 cup (250ml) pure coconut water • ½ cup (140g) unsweetened Greek yogurt • 8 fresh mint leaves Serve in a glass topped with extra mint leaves, 2 tsp flaked coconut and 1 tsp passionfruit pulp.

1) Before moving full-steam ahead into the New Year, take some time to reflect on the year prior. Ask yourself the tough questions and be honest when answering them. What were your goals in 2014? What prevented you from achieving these goals? What unhealthy habits or behaviors do you have? Make a list of all the choices you made that held you back, and make sure you don’t repeat them in 2015. 2) Be positive. Often when we set goals, it’s common for them to look like a list things that we need to stop doing -- stop eating sugar, limit the amount of TV watched, work less, lose 5 pounds, etc. As you reset your objectives for the year ahead, make sure it’s a list of things you want to do and achieve rather than a list of ‘what not to do.’ 3) Take the time to really think about what’s important to you. Ask yourself, “What do I really want?” When you understand

what’s important to you, you can better prioritize. It’s time to start believing in the life that you want for yourself and stop being busy with the ordinary things life puts in your way. 4) Establish rituals. If you’re like me and often feel like there’s not enough hours in the day, you can manage this by building rituals into your life to ensure that you find time for the things that are important. Make it simple by building your rituals around the daily practice of MOVE NOURISH BELIEVE. By making the daily commitment to MOVE your body, NOURISH from the inside out and BELIEVE anything is possible, you will become the best version of yourself and you will get the very most out of every single day. 5) Never, Never, Never give up on your goals or shaping your dreams. If you slip up, remember: Every day is a new beginning, take a deep breath and start again.

Q&A

How has living in North County affected your skating career? Living close to the PQ skate park gives me an opportunity to keep practicing as much as I can. There are 3 close to me. That gives me an opportunity to meet a lot of skaters.
Who are some local pros and companies that have helped you in your achievements? Willy Santos for sure. It’s cool to see him often at the skate park. Alex C. from the skate shop Route 44 helps me a lot and teaches me a lot. He gives me advice on tricks and helps me get over my fears. The guys from Wavelines skate shop help me as well when we see eachother at the skate park.
Where do you see yourself professionally in 5 years? For sure in college working on a degree in business. I would also love to help out a team of architects who are looking to build skateparks.

What’s your favorite after-school snack? RAMEN! I could eat ramen for breakfast, lunch, and dinner if my mom would let me.
Do you get nervous before every competition? If so, what do you do to relax and calm your nerves? I for sure get nervous before a competition. But I just drink some water, take a deep breath, and go for it! What advice do you have for other kids thinking about learning how to skateboard? Have fun with it, don’t stress too hard on it and keep trying. You will eventually get the trick down with determination and practice. And don’t get discouraged! We hear that you have several other talents and hobbies, can you tell our readers about those? I was in martial arts and boxing for a few years. I competed a lot in both of those. I played basketball for a few seasons and I also like to play darts and swim. I also actually really like school. I am in AVID which

Favored Discipline: Street

is a college Prep course that I have been a part of in middle school and will continue to be in throughout high school. Recently my family and I helped an outreach program put together a Thanksgiving celebration for homeless families. That was really cool and I would like to do that again. How do you juggle your other interests and skateboarding? I basically have to schedule everything around homework. Once I get my homework done, I just check on how much time I have and what I can fit in that free time. Is there anything else you want to add? Anything you want our readers to know? For sure definitely stay in school, it’s not so bad and get good grades! Stay mellow and have fun. Be cool to everybody. NCK

Down To Earth Dad

Stomach in Knott’s

E

very year around the holidays my family makes our annual pilgrimage to Knott’s Berry Farm. We started this tradition about seven years ago, when both of our kids were only big enough for the tame Camp Snoopy rides. They would spin around or bounce up and down, with the biggest smiles on their little faces, as my wife took pictures and I sipped on overpriced coffee drinks. But our Camp Snoopy days are behind us. As the years have gone by our kids have grown taller; now they are big enough to climb aboard every thrill ride in the park. Both of my kids are thrill seekers. It must be hereditary, because I loved roller coasters when I was their age. The amusement park I went to as a kid was called Kings Island, which is just outside of Cincinnati. It’s the place where Jan put the blueprints in the wrong canister in the classic two-part Brady Bunch episode. And it’s also the place where I rode my first real roller coaster: The Beast. I went on The Beast with my dad in the summer of 1979, the year the ride first opened. At the time it was the longest, tallest and fast-

est roller coaster in the world. Despite the fact that I satisfied the minimum height requirements, my dad wasn’t convinced I was actually big enough to fit securely in the seat, and I remember him holding on to my leg like a visegrip during the duration of the ride, to ensure that I didn’t slip out. My dad’s hand squeezing my leg on that ride is one of my most vivid childhood memories, because I recognized at that moment that my dad was trying to protect me, which was comforting as we zipped around at high speeds on an untested roller coaster. Fast forward 35 years. Now I’m the dad grasping the legs of my kids. However, there is a big difference between Kings Island in 1979 and Knott’s Berry Farm today. My dad got to be the hero and he only had to go on one, single, solitary ride. In 1979 the line for The Beast was 4 hours long. You went to Kings Island, you stood in line for The Beast, you rode The Beast, and then you drove back to Indianapolis. But for me to be a great dad I had to ride Montezuma’s Revenge 100 times, because the crowd on a weekday in December at Knott’s Berry Farm is a bit sparse, and there were no lines for any of the rides.

The ride that finally sealed my fate was the Silver Bullet. As we were buckling in for our fifth trip on the Silver Bullet my kids were still super excited. But me, well, not so much. Perhaps there is a benefit to having to wait four hours in line for a ride, I thought to myself. Then I surveyed the other patrons in line and I didn’t see any other 42-year-old guys. And that’s when it hit me: I’m too old for roller coasters. So, with a bit of sadness, I would officially like to announce my retirement from competitive-roller-coastering. I’ve been riding thrill rides for 35 years and it is time that I open up my seat to someone younger, who doesn’t have a bad back or a realistic chance to have a heart attack. Next year my kids get to fend for themselves on all of the roller coasters. My wife and I will be snug in our seats watching the Snoopy Ice show. Mom to Mom

Book Review

Megan Rath is a wife and mom of an 8 year old daughter and 4 year old son. She is the organizer of the Hip Chicks Book Club (www.meetup.com/hipchicksbookclub), a large group of diverse women of all ages that meets in North County every month. A native of North County all her life, she currently lives in Vista.

Landline by Rainbow Rowell When T.V. writer Georgie tells her husband Neal she won’t be able to make it to Christmas at his parents’ house in Oklahoma because she has to work, she didn’t expect him to pack up their daughters and fly off without her. Thinking she has ruined her marriage for good, she can’t face going home. While staying with her own parents, she finds a way to communicate with Neal. But it’s Neal from over a decade ago she’s talking to… I really liked this book, for the most part. It’s a cute, quick read, great for when you want a little escape. And even if some of the ideas are a little farfetched, even for this time travel loving girl, there are parts of the story that are so relatable that I couldn’t put it down.

I give it a BAlso try Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell.

Wild: From Lost to Found of the Pacific Crest Trail by Cheryl Strayed After her mother’s death, Cheryl Strayed goes into a downward spiral, which destroys her marriage, and sets her on a dangerous path. Feeling the need to find herself again, she embarks on a 3 month journey, with zero experience, to hike over a thousand miles from the Mojave Desert in California to Washington State on the Pacific Crest Trail. After hearing rave reviews about this one, I was surprised at how hard it was for me to get into. I LOVED hearing about her experiences on the PCT, but the flashbacks to her multiple incidents of cheating on her husband and her flippant drug use almost made me put the book down. They were just hard to get through, at least for me. I am glad I stuck it out though, as there was a happy ending.

I give it a C+ If you enjoy this style of book, check out Eat Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert.

What Rock Church is All About

he woman put her hands out, made fists, and quickly moved them up and down, one after another. “Oh, a drum?” asked Jessica Yaffa, the volunteer who was manning the massive toy table. The woman nodded that Jessica had understood her correctly. “OK,” Jessica responded. “I’m sure we have a drum here somewhere.” Jessica alerted the handful of volunteers near her, including her son, and they sprang into action to locate a drum for the deaf guest who hoped to give it to her toddler son so they could create a way to communicate with each other. The volunteers searched anxiously among the thousands of toys donated to Rock Church’s 18th Annual Toys for Joy event that seeks to spread the love of Christ by showering guests with a free lunch, clothing, groceries, services, games with the entire family, and a toy to every child in attendance. But they seemed unable to find one. “Well?” Jessica asked her son after

some time had passed, determined not to disappoint. “We can’t find one,” he replied. “Stay at it.” Finally, after a few more nervous minutes had gone by, an Elmo toy was located and brought to Jessica. “Will this do?” her son asked. She took it and showed the woman who had patiently waited. Elmo is holding a drum. The woman gave the most full-throated silent cheer at the event. It was just one of the thousands of life-changing moments that occurred on this day, a day that ultimately offered every guest the greatest gift of all: the chance to ask Jesus—the Savior of all mankind—into their heart. There were 597 decisions made for Christ that day. The event that started small during the Christmas season in 1996 by Rock Church’s Senior Pastor, Miles McPherson, has grown so rapidly that moving to larger venues has been necessary several times over the years. In 2014, the event has expanded to simultaneously occur

in three locations around San Diego: Central San Diego, North County and East County. With 1 in 5 children living in poverty in San Diego, something as simple as a toy for Christmas and a meal can have a great impact. Next year, the event will add another location in South County—and there are plans for more. Walking into the North County location at San Marcos Middle School, Pastor McPherson sees only a portion of the more than 1,800 kids and parents who attended the event. All are playing together, opening boxes of toys, riding new bikes, receiving free groceries, listening to the Gospel message, being entertained and eating hot dogs. Not to mention the 366 volunteers handing out toys, serving the free lunch and praying for attendees. Without them this event would not be possible. “If you want to know what Rock Church is about, it’s about today,” McPherson says. “This is all Jesus wants from the church—that they would be united as one and people would experience the love of God.” nck
