From me to YOU!

H

appy New Year! I hope you had a wonderful holiday season and Santa brought you everything you asked for! With a new year upon us, it is a great time to reflect on the past, and think to the future. I always think of January as the month of endless possibilities and a happy start to another 365 days! The New Year is also always a great time to change those bad habits, or pick up some extra good ones. Our resolution at North County Kids Magazine is to make sure that you know all about the best family-friendly events in North County, and are well equipped to be the fabulous parents that you are! With that mindset, this issue is “bulked up” with some great New Years-inspired features such as our Celeb New Year’s Resolution feature, Pinterest Picks, and healthy “Gone Bananas!” recipes. We also hear from our helpful bookworm in the Mom to Mom Book Review and tackle a very relevant subject, Facebook, with Down to Earth Dad. As always, we have some very talented young North County-ers that we spotlight as our Surfer of the Month, Skateboarder of the Month, and North County Kid of the Month, with some new additions this month including the Kidsville Playtown Kid of the Month and SPOT Kids Therapy Kid of the Month. There truly are some amazing kids out there!

Q&A

What is your favorite thing about living in North County?

I love

being able to hike a mountain or surf the waves.

When did you start playing soccer? I started playing when I was 5 years old and I haven’t stopped since.

How do you prepare for a game? I listen to my music on the way to a game and then when I get to the field my teammates and I will boost each other up with words of encouragement. What kind of training do you do? I practice two or three times a week with my team and then I work with a goalkeeper trainer on my own.

What do you enjoy most about your Competitive Revolution team? My teammates and playing at a high level. What are your goals in terms of playing soccer?

I hope to learn and grow as a goalkeeper and one day I hope to play at a National level.

We hear that you met someone pretty special and they gave you some advice. Yes I got to meet Abby Wambach. She gave me some great

advice: “Find your own way—what works for others may not work for you— believe in yourself. Your parents will always believe in you but in the end it has to be you to believe in yourself.”

What advice do you have for other kids looking to start playing soccer? Get out there, try it, have fun and find what works for you. NCK Revolution Soccer is San Marcos’ most successful competitive soccer program and we invite you to Join the Revolution! • Local league for local families looking for a FUN place for their kids to enjoy soccer • All-volunteer program • Family-friendly atmosphere • Winter, Spring, and Fall seasons are offered with lowest registration fees in town! Down To Earth Dad

Talkin’ ‘bout a Resolution

2

013 is in the rearview mirror, so it’s time to formulate a life-changing New Year’s resolution—something so substantial that it will help morph me into the Down to Earth Dad 2.0. Now, this requires a bit of painful self-reflection. Is there anything I do in my life that is totally unproductive and a complete waste of time? Is there anything in my life that is a bit unhealthy? Is there anything in my life that is borderline creepy? From across the room my wife has just shouted with tremendous vigor “fantasy football.” Perhaps, but I was thinking about something else—Facebook. I recognized it was time to relinquish my Facebook obsession earlier this year when my family took a trip back to my hometown of Indianapolis. My wife and I were sitting in Steak ‘n Shake (because that’s what you do in Indiana), and on a lark she asked me, “How many Facebook friends do you have in

this restaurant?” I quickly surveyed the room, “Four that I can see, but I’m guessing there might be a few dudes back in the kitchen.” Her follow-up question cut to the heart of the matter, “How many of them do you actually want to go over and talk to?” I truthfully replied, “None, obviously.” I wasn’t being aloof—I just already knew everything that was going on in their lives from Facebook. I have the same feelings about Facebook that The Breakfast Club’s John Bender had about the Shermer High School Physics Club—it’s sorta social, demented and sad, but social. Here’s an example—I am Facebook friends with the girl whose locker was next to mine for four years in high school. During that time I don’t think we spoke once. Now we have a symbiotic Facebook relationship, where she relentlessly shows me pictures of mutilated animals in the futile attempt to convert me to become a vegetarian and I patiently wait to analyze her family’s vacation photos from Kings Island. This is the twisted

kicker—the reason I want to see her vacation photos is probably only so I can subconsciously convince myself that my family’s Lake Tahoe vacation was better than hers, and therefore in the world of social competitiveness I am somehow the big winner. See what I mean—it’s demented and sad, but social. There was a recent study published in the Public Library of Science that found that using Facebook is associated with jealousy, social tension, isolation and depression. Seriously, it took two college professors to figure this out? But who am I kidding, I can’t give up Facebook. How else would I find out that D-list celebrities have died? Maybe I should just set my sights on a more realistic New Year’s resolution—like thinning down my overflowing Netflix queue. NCK The Down-To-Earth-Dad is a lawyer by day and youth soccer coach by night. He lives in Carlsbad with his wife and two kids.

Skater of the Month

Xander Newell Age: 9 Hometown: Encinitas Stance: Regular Sponsors: TEN Skateboards

Started Skating at Age: 7½ Started Competing: 8 Favored Discipline: Bowl and Vert

Career Highlights First McTwist Getting sponsored by TEN Skateboards Meeting and skating with Neal Mims

Q&A How has living in North County affected your skating career? There are so many great skate parks in this area and I get to skate with some really nice people and amazing skaters.

Do you get nervous before every competition? If so, what do you do to relax and calm your nerves? Yes, I remind myself that it doesn’t matter how I score in the contest…what matters is that I have fun.

Who are some local pros and companies that have helped you in your achievements?

What advice do you have for other kids thinking about learning how to skateboard?

Neal Mims of Neal Mims Skate Academy (NMSA) has been a mentor to me and helped me learn new skills and push my skating to another level.

Don’t give up, it’s not always easy but it sure is fun!

Where do you see yourself professionally in 5 years?

Skateboarding is usually my first priority and I do it almost every day. I always make sure to get my homework and chores done too though. NCK

I hope to be skating in contests like AmTech and eventually going Pro.

How do you juggle your other interests and skateboarding?

What’s your favorite after-school snack? Apples.

1st place in the Scholastic Surf Series (SSS) for the whole year when I was in 6th grade. 2nd place in the SSS Nationals. I was super stoked to get invited to the USA Surfing America championships contest at lowers in my first year of surfing competitively.

How has living in North County affected your surfing career?

What do you love the most about surfing? Why?

Living in North County has helped my surfing out tremendously! I get to ride my bike to meet up with my friends every day to surf the best spots in Carlsbad.

Surfing lets me express my personality. Whenever I go surfing with my friends Peytie, Hana, and Maya, they make me laugh and we have so much fun.

Who are some local pros and companies that have helped you in your achievements? How? One of my favorite local pros, Evan Slater, has helped me out a ton. His daughter Peytie and I surf every day and he is always there to guide and support us.

Any advice to other surfers out there looking to improve their skills? Just keep practicing. Once you’ve got the hang of it, you’ll never let it go!

challenging academics, integrated humanitarian service, and exciting global expedition programs. The Grauer School is a grades 6-12 college preparatory school that is the regional leader in the small schools movement. The Grauer School focuses on college preparatory rigor balanced with expeditionary learning and Socratic teaching. As a small school by design with approximately 150 students total, The Grauer School emphasizes relationship-based teaching that stems from its small class sizes with a student-to-teacher ratio of 6 to 1. “The best way to understand the power of relationship-driven education, a core feature at The Grauer School, is to witness it firsthand,” Braymen adds. “Once you step onto campus, and especially after you see a class in action, you’ll understand why the seniors in our graduating class were accepted to 89% of the colleges to which they applied.” Since space on the tours is limited, families are asked to RSVP to the “Discover Grauer”

event at www.grauerschool.com or by calling (760) 274-2116. Priority admission applications are due January 17th while regular admissions applications are due February 28th. The Grauer School is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), a member of the California Association of Independent Schools (CAIS), and is the only school in the region to be honored as a designated UNESCO school. The Grauer School was named one of Outside magazine’s Best 10 Places to Work in the United States in 2013. Cody Reid

Age: 5 Grade: Preschool Part of San Diego you live in: Penasquitos School: Sundance Elementary Favorite after school snack: A peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Favorite part of living in North County: Walking to the pet store by my house, and going to the park. How long have you been a Challenged Athletes Foundation athlete? 4 years What grants have you received from CAF? I received a grant for an Össur running leg. What do you enjoy most about being part the Challenged Athletes Foundation? I like getting to see my friends and showing pictures to my class to show them that more people have legs like me. What CAF events do you participate in? And which is your favorite and why? The Kids Run at CAF’s Aspen Medical Products San Diego Triathlon Challenge in La Jolla. I like to run really fast with the other kids and get a medal. I like to win.

What do you like most about your Össur running leg? It helps me run really fast!. Dana, as Cody’s Mom, what do you want people to know about CAF? Before we met the Challenged Athletes Foundation, Cody’s only prosthetic leg had a knee and was very heavy. He could not run fast like his friends at school. He often sat out of tag and other social games because he couldn’t keep up and often fell trying. CAF awarded Cody a running leg, it is really light, bouncy, and makes him very fast. Cody has been so much happier and social with his running leg. What is your favorite sport? Soccer. I like scoring goals in my soccer games. I’ve scored a lot and I even got a medal. Do you have a favorite sport team or athlete you like to watch/cheer for? I got to meet Blake Leeper and was on his relay team (at the CAF Össur Leg Amputee Running Clinic) he is really fast too. He got to go to London and won medals at the Paralympic Games! NCK

Mom to Mom

Book Review

Megan Rath is a wife and mom of a 8 year old daughter and 3 year old son. She is the organizer of the Hip Chicks Book Club (www.meetup.com/hipchicksbookclub), a large group of diverse women of all ages that meets in North County every month. A native of North County all her life, she currently lives in Vista.

Outlander by Diana Gabaldon In 1945 Scotland, Claire Randall is a nurse, home from the war, and on a second honeymoon with her husband. But while visiting an old stone circle, she is transported back in time to 1743, where she meets Jamie Frasier, a young Scottish warrior, and soon becomes torn between two very different centuries, and two very different men. Outlander is one of my all time favorite series of books. It is very much historical fiction, but I love the slight Sci-Fi edge. (I think I’ve mentioned it here before, but I’m a total sucker for time travel.) But really, it’s so well written, I forget about it being even slightly in the Sci-Fi realm. Just a warning though, there are some pretty graphic scenes, of both violent and sexual natures.

I give this book an A. The next book in the eight-book Outlander series is Dragonfly in Amber.

Paranormalcy by Kiersten White Evie is a very normal teenage girl. She just happens to be able to see through paranormal (Faeries, vampires, werewolves, etc.) “glamours” to the real monsters underneath, and she works for an agency that tracks these paranormals. Okay, so this book is definitely geared toward the 16-year-old crowd. But I loved it. So much so, that I ran right out to the library for the second (and third) book in the series. I like that Evie isn’t the typical brooding teen girl (she’s sort of an anti-Bella Swan, if you will.) She likes pink. She likes boys. She likes shopping. And she kicks butt.

I give this whole series (Paranormalcy, Supernaturally, and Endlessly) a B+. If you liked this book/series, check out Mind Games, also by Kiersten White, who happens to be a San Diego County native.

Toys for Joy: Bringing Hope for the Holidays by Kaity Bergquist, Sydney Davison, and Shawn Maree McCowan

E

ighteen hours before the big event, a line of families forms at the gate. Parents snuggle with their children in blankets on the ground, on chairs, even in tents, to be sure they will be one of the first through the doors. No, it’s not a Black Friday sale. It’s the ever-growing, 17th annual Toys for Joy event in southeast San Diego. Held at Abraham Lincoln High and Walter J. Porter Elementary schools, Toys for Joy is organized by Rock Church, along with 16 other churches, numerous sponsors and donors. More than 8,700 guests were served this year, and the number of struggling families continues to grow. Half a million San Diego residents face food insecurity, not knowing where their next meal will come from, said Miles McPherson, pastor of Rock Church. One in six children in San Diego live in poverty, and Toys for Joy is designed to provide those people with some hope, he said. “Hope is an expected desire that something positive is going to happen in your life,” said McPherson. “The one thing I hope they will leave with is hope. The church should be that.” All told, 9,312 toys, 5,720 books and 35,000 pounds of food were given away, including 600 bags of food for Porter Elementary students in need during the month-long holiday break. A record 212 of bicycles were given away, including a portion reserved for the last children in the toy line. Former San Diego Chargers defensive end Jacques Cesaire and Chargers defensive end Kendall Reyes were greeting kids. “You walk into the toy room, you walk into a room where they’re passing out groceries, you walk where people are picking out clothes -- it is truly a miracle. It really shows the miracle of Christmas,” said Cesaire. “Looking at these kids’ faces as they’re picking out the toy of their dreams, you almost have to fight back tears.” For families with a single wage earner, it can be particularly difficult to feel any Christmas cheer. Cherelle Spring, of El Cajon, is a single mother of three: Zyariah, 5, Tearea, 4, and Jeffrey, 2. “This means there’s a lot of hope out there,” Spring said as the tears rolled down her cheeks in the toy room. A volunteer held

Jeffrey as he clutched a toy train set while Zyariah tightly held princess dress-up shoes as if they would disappear. “You’ve got to keep faith in people in this world because for less fortunate people like me, having a family of three and being a single mom, it’s going to be a struggle for me to have Christmas,” Spring said. “I’m blessed to have somebody willing to help my family out and put smiles on their faces.” At the Family Field, guests enjoyed a hot dog lunch, entertainment and children’s activities such as face painting, crafts, animal balloons and a video gaming truck. Every so often, several bikes were raffled off. Haircuts were also given, courtesy of Rock Church’s Makeover Ministry. Onstage, McPherson was honored by elected representatives and community leaders for his role in organizing the event. “We want to thank the Rock church so much for what they’ve done for this community,” said 79th District Assembly member Shirley Weber, as she presented a certificate of recognition to McPherson. “Every element of our Christianity talks about activism. It tells you that you’re the light of the world, which means that people ought to see you...So everything about this faith ought to be about giv-

ing and outreach and I’m so happy that Rock Church has set a good example for all of us.” Senator Ben Hueso also presented a resolution to McPherson. “This is an unprecedented contribution to a community. I rarely see this as your elected official,” said Hueso. “Not only are you providing spiritual enrichment to our community but getting involved in social action and making a difference in people’s lives.” Geniese Ligon, a teacher at Porter Elementary, spoke about the impact Toys for Joy has on kids at her school. “Kids talk about this all year long,” she said. “What you do matters. Our kids carry this for a lifetime. It is more than just one day.” As the Rock Church expands -- it has locations in North and East counties and is eyeing a South county site -- McPherson is visualizing multiple Toys for Joy events. “I hope next year we can have them at all our sites and see people blessed all over the county,” said McPherson. “We’ve got to spread this all over the county and spread as much good will as possible.” NCK For more information on Volunteering/Donating/Partnering with Toys For Joy visit: toys-for-joy.org
