from me to YOU! February is full of celebrations! The month as a whole is Black History Month, the annual celebration of achievements by black Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of African Americans in U.S. history. Take this time to teach your kids about the tremendous achievements made in history by African American leaders. Within the month, we have several other mini-celebrations such as Groundhog Day, on February 2, where we eagerly find out if spring will come early (that little guy better not see his shadow if you ask me)! The very next day the chips and salsa come out and we all gather around the tube for one of the most popular sporting events to happen all year long, the Superbowl! Whether you are there to socialize and enjoy the tasty snacks like me, or are there to root on your team like the die-hard fan that you are, I hope you enjoy this day with family and friends (and extra Queso dip). A little over a week later the Queso is put away, and the beads come out...it’s Mardi Gras (French for ‘Fat Tuesday’). From there we have Ash Wednesday which marks the first day of the ritual fasting of the Lenten season...now the Queso dip is really put away. The very next day we celebrate our sweethearts with chocolates, date nights, roses, and mushy Hallmark cards. Definitely check out our Valentine’s Day Date Night Guide for some of our top recommendations to make your night extra special.

a Father’s Love

Annie Strange is no ordinary 4th grader; she is a good samaritan and a visionary ahead of her time. At just 10 years old she has started her own 501c3 charity called “Annie Helps the World”! Her charitable organization is focused on feeding, clothing, and sheltering individuals who are homeless, disadvantaged, neglected or abused. Annie Helps the World also acts as a facilitator and generator of charitable funds for other charities. While many kids at Annieʼs age are focused on themselves and probably only thinking about what theyʼre going to have for dinner, or what their plans are for the weekend, Annie and her smile glow of selflessness, wisdom, and compassion. We are very excited to see her charity grow, and weʼre sure North County is too! Check out what she has to say and be sure to learn more at www.anniehelpstheworld.org.

What made you want to start a charity? One day I saw a homeless person and realized how uncomfortable he was and I wanted to help him and others like him. What do you want “Annie Helps the World” to accomplish? What are your goals? 1. To help the homeless and less fortunate feel more comfortable. 2. Provide food, water, shelter, and clothes. 3. Have a warehouse for exchanging used toys and other items. How did you come up with the name “Annie Helps the World”? The name came to me because that is exactly what I want to do. How are you going to spread the word about your charity? (Other than in North County Kids magazine, of course!) My website helps promote it and by my donations to good causes and charities. Do any of your friends have their own charities? What do they think about this new project? No, I don’t think my friends do but they are very, very proud and excited for me. Have you always been interested/involved in community service? If so, what specifically have you been a part of? For the past couple of years I have been giving to the homeless, my school, and to the Polinksy Center. Do you have a website where our readers can learn more about Annie Helps the World? Yes, I have a website that I just started called Anniehelpstheworld.org. Anything else you would like to add? Anything else you want our readers to know? Yes, I love sports and you can contact us at info@anniehelpstheworld.org to donate. Oh, and hi mom!

Grade: 8 School: Aviara Oaks Middle School Age: 14 Hometown: Carlsbad Stance: Goofy Sponsors: Hurley, DSurf, Hoven Bony Acai, Futures, Bill Johnson & SurfRide Started Surfing: 2005 Starting Competing: 2008 Hobbies: Skating, PingPong Favorite Surf Spot: Big Rock in La Jolla Long board or short board: Shortboard, although I compete in both

What made you start surfing in the first place? Why did you pick it up? Because my Dad surfed and we would go to the beach a lot in the summer time. How has living in North County, even San Diego in general, affected your surfing career? It has helped me tremendously because it has allowed me to have access to lots of different quality waves all within short distances. Who are some local pros and companies that have helped you in your achievements? How? Taylor Knox has lived locally and it has been great to witness his power surfing first hand. He also comes to speak to us kids on occasion. In terms of companies, Bill Johnson has been an awesome shaper for me for the last 4 years now. Hurley has also been a huge supporter of mine. I have also been able to remain strong and healthy by drinking Bony Acai every day. Any advice to other surfers out there looking to improve their skills? Keep practicing and surf all conditions. What’s your favorite part about surfing? Why? It’s just super fun and I love the ocean. Have you ever had any shark run-ins? Other sea creatures? I saw a shark at a contest at Morro Bay. I also got chased out of the water at Grandview by dolphins which was strange. Where do you see yourself professionally in 5 years? Going on surf trips and competing in the WQS. Who is your favorite pro-surfer? Josh Kerr Where is your go-to surf gear shop? SurfRide always styles me and has a huge assortment of gear! What’s the biggest wave you’ve ever surfed (feet)? Probably about 18 feet when I was 10 out at La Jolla Cove. It was the last time it broke down there and my Dad had to push me into it. Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers? I’m grateful to my family for supporting me and being there for me and grateful to God for everything he has blessed me with in my life. Surfing is just fun. Even if you don’t want to compete, just go out and enjoy the ocean.

The Down to Earth Dad { Old Fashioned Love }

From Stroller Walks to Girlʼs Nights Out, the women of Coffee & Whine Life are having a blast together all around North County!

This Valentine’s Day I am reminded of my down-to-earth paternal grandparents, who were married for 68 years. I don’t personally know any other couple who have been married that long. According to the most recent census less than 5% of all marriages last over 55 years. They don’t even keep statistics of marriages that last over 65 years. You need a lot of love and a lot of luck to be married over six decades. They had both. I have this great old photo of them from the 1920s, taken shortly before they married. I wonder what they were thinking when they posed for this photo. What dreams did these two teenagers from rural Kentucky have for their lives? I have another photo of them taken for the newspaper announcement for their 50th Anniversary. They look pretty happy in that photo. I like to think that when they took that picture they were reminiscing about the half of a century they had spent together. The story of my grandparents isn’t especially remarkable – it’s just typical Americana. But what is really special about their story is that they shared the long journey together: for better or worse, through good times and bad. My grandfather was the oldest of three boys. His father died when he was young and he quit school and went to work in a mill to help raise his two brothers. My grandmother was one of eight kids. Her father also died when she was young, and she helped her mother raise her younger siblings. They were just two poor kids who got married right before the Great Depression, and they did their best with the cards they had been dealt in life.

Holly Ireland Photograpy www.hollyireland.com

My grandfather worked hard jobs: farm labor, poultry factory, and in a slaughterhouse. My grandmother stayed home and watched over seven rowdy kids. Money was tight, but they always managed to get by.

Holly Ireland Photograpy www.hollyireland.com

After their kids grew up, my grandfather retired and bought a few rental properties as investments. Life got a little easier for them financially, but they never had a lot of money. In fact, one of my earliest memories as a kid was going with them to get free government cheese in the 1970s. If you ever had the “privilege” to taste government cheese it’s an experience you never forget. My grandparents had a couple of interesting encounters during their lives - they brushed shoulders with Colonel Sanders in their youth and narrowly avoided the charms of the Reverend Jim Jones as adults. But their biggest achievement was the simple fact that they were able to raise seven kids in the face of tough economic circumstances. An important lesson I learned from them is to treat your children equally. They took great pride in the fact that all five of their sons served in the military, but they didn’t place a lot of emphasis on the fact that one of their sons was a famous basketball player in Indiana in 1950s.

Holly Ireland Photograpy www.hollyireland.com

Febr uar y 2013

Holly Ireland Photograpy www.hollyireland.com

My grandparents had twenty-five grandchildren. I was number twenty-two. They made sure that they treated all of us equally, as well. That meant that for your birthday every year you got an envelope with seven brand-new one-dollar bills inside, and for Christmas you got an envelope with seven brand-new one-dollar bills inside. What was the secret to their long marriage? I wish they were still around so I could ask them. But sadly they’re not – so I have to guess. It probably has a lot to do with the fact that they were just hardworking, decent people, who made family their number one priority. It probably has nothing to do with the fact that they ate a lot government cheese. Down to Earth Dad is a lawyer by day and youth soccer coach by night. He lives in Carlsbad with his wife and two kids.

HERO of the Month!

Steve Wampler

Steve Wampler is the epitome of going against the odds, winning, and not letting anything stand in the way in the process. What Steve has helped communicate to people all over the world is: there are no boundaries in life! Founder of environmental programs created to give physically disabled youth an authentic outdoor wilderness experience, one of the first things youʼll notice about Steve visually is that heʼs in a wheelchair and has Cerebral Palsy. Then youʼll get to know him as a person, and youʼll see how little CP limits who he is. “Over the years, Iʼve learned to not only live with my disability, but to thrive, and I want to ensure that others have the same opportunity. I started the Wampler Foundation in 2002 with my incredible wife Elizabeth so that children with disabilities could be active participants in programs and activities that are centered around the great outdoors.” How much of an impact has Steve had on the world? Well, an award-winning documentary movie was recently made about Steve and his story. Learn more about Steve here and find out about the incredible challenge he put himself up against, and conquered, to benefit his cause. When did your passion to help kids with disabilities really blossom and did your own childhood have any influence on your efforts? After graduating from UC

Davis I learned that the camp that I attended as a child closed down. Realizing what a profound effect the experience had in my life, I was determined to start it over to give kids the same life changing experience.

We know that you and your family had to push your school to realize that you were as capable as any other kid in the school. Tell us a little bit about that. What do you want to tell parents and kids that might be in your similar situation today? My parents knew that I only had cerebral palsy that only affected me physically and they

knew mentally I could anything. When I was 3 that tried getting me integrated into public school with much resistance but would take no for an answer. After a two-year battle I was attending kindergarten just like everyone else. My school years were a great experience but it wasnʼt until I went off to college that I knew I was capable of just about anything. After studying environmental engineering at UC Davis, what urged you to start The Wampler Foundation in 2002? About ten years after graduating I knew I had to

reopen the camp. I was bore of my job and I always loved the outdoors and I had a calling to give back. By giving back in the same way that affected me as a boy and hoping that kids could come away with new outlook on life.

going through a transition in 2009 and we wanted to go national with our programs. At the time the Foundation was sponsoring 5 programs and one happened to be in Yosemite. I was all by myself wondering around the valley floor and came across the bridge the looks at El Cap. I sat there for awhile in amazement of the enormity of the rock but I know two paraplegics that had done the climb before, so I said to myself if they could did, I could to. I was also thinking that It really doesnʼt look that hard! Why El Capitan, of all mountains? Because it the pinnacle of all rock climbers in the world. Do you still enjoy rock climbing - or was El Capitan something to check off of your bucket list? El Cap was my last and only climb I will ever do! How did the climb help The Wampler Foundation? From the time I got down, almost two years ago the attention hasnʼt stopped. The documentary film was completed a month ago and has won several awards already and I have been all over the country speaking. The film is called “Wamplerʼs Ascent” – is the focus only on the El Capitan climb? The film is full length documentary movie about my life, family, foundation and the climb.

What it is about the outdoors that you think is great for kids, particularly those with disabilities? What was it about Camp Nejedly, the camp you re-opened, that was and is so special to you? want to volunteer themselves? The real outdoors teaches kids that anything is

Gentleman Norman

You were the first person ever with Cerebral Palsy to climb El Capitan in Yosemite National Park. That is quite an amazing and impressive accomplishment! When did climbing El Capitan enter your mind? (At twice the height of the Empire State Building, the climb required Steve to complete 20,000 pull ups over a 6 day period and also sleep on the sheer face of the mountain). The foundation was

possible. The reason we like this location that itʼs like no other, we are living outdoors for a week where very few able bodied people get to experience. Putting any child into this kind of situation allows them to overcome so many barriers but you can times that by ten with a physically disabled child.

How do families get in touch with this camp? Whether they have a child that would love to attend, or might want to volunteer themselves? Through our web site at wamplerfoundation.org Not many people get to buy their favorite childhood camp and open it up to children for free! What does that feel like?! Itʼs overwhelming

to know that the kids are having the same life altering experience that I had growing up 30 years ago.

Is there anything else that you would like to add? Anything that you want the parents and families of San Diego to know? Our goal in

the very near future is to purchase a facility in the mountains of San Diego and serve 1000 kids a year.

Skater

of the

Hearty Soup for Two

month

NAME: Carter Bolt AGE: 6 HOMETOWN: Born in Hefei, China, now lives in Carmel Valley, San Diego STANCE: Regular & Goofy STARTED SKATING: 5 years old FAVORED DISCIPLINE: Ramps & bowl skating

stats

career highlights: Began dropping the pools at both Carmel Valley skate park & Encinitas YMCA at age 5 Backside kickturns & modest jumps Skated over a 5 foot spine (Metro Skate Academy, Orlando, FL) Skated off a 6 foot jump into a foam pit (Metro Skate Academy, Orlando, FL) How has living in North County affected your skating? The Encinitas YMCA is my favorite skate park; the staff and ramps/pools

have let me learn and try new tricks. I have also met a lot of great kids and made friends at the skate park. I skate almost every Saturday & Sunday at the YMCA unless we are in Florida. What is it about skateboarding that you love? I like going fast and feeling like I am on a rollercoaster. Do a lot of your friends skate too? My friends from school do not skate, but I have made friends at the YMCA. Who are some local pros/companies/skateparks that have helped you in your achievements or that you love?

Mike Owen and Bucky Lasek have both given me tips while skating and have helped me. My favorite skate parks are the Encinitas YMCA skate park and the Metro Skate Academy in Orlando, Florida Where do you see yourself professionally in 5 years? If I keep practicing I think I could get sponsored in a couple years. Whatʼs your favorite after-school snack? I really like Skittles when I go skating.

Do you ever get nervous before you drop into a big bowl or start to learn a new trick? If so, what do you do to relax? I had a really bad fall dropping into a big bowl once and it hurt a lot. My dad makes me warm up and always checks my board before

he lets me try big drops now. I still get a little scared when trying a big new ramp or bowl and I ask my dad what other drops I have done that are like the new one. Do you have a favorite trick? If so, what is it? I like racing my friends and making up contests on the street courses. I also like when my dad builds a wall out of foam bricks in front of the foam pit. I skate down a 12 foot ramp, across the floor, up a 6 foot ramp and try to jump over the foam bricks and land in the pit. I can get really high! What advice do you have for other kids thinking about learning how to skateboard? Skating is a lot of fun! Get good pads because everyone falls a lot when they learn.

Hearty Soup for Two INGREDIENTS: 2 Large carrots (scrubbed clean & chopped into chunks) 1 Potato (scrubbed clean & chopped into chunks) 1 Large celery stalk (cleaned, with leaves) 1/2 Cup milk (or coconut milk) 1 Onion (roughly chopped) 1 Garlic clove (minced) 1 tsp. oil (high heat oil) A pinch of saffron Salt & Pepper to taste

DIRECTIONS: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Steam carrots & potatoes for 4 minutes (until semi-soft). In small pot, warm milk and stir in saffron. In pan, heat oil and add in onion, garlic, celery & salt. Cook until soft. Add all vegetables to food processor. Blend. Transfer to saucepan, stir in milk, heat and bring down to a simmer. (You can also add the milk directly to the

food processor and blend.)

7. Cut bread into heart shapes, toast, & serve on top of soup!

The History of Saint Valentine: Early Christian martyrs were named “Valentine.” Legend has it that one Valentine

was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers (who were forbidden to marry) and for ministering Christians. During his imprisonment he healed the blind daughter of his jailer. Before his execution, he supposedly wrote a note to her, signing it...“From your Valentine.” The feast of Saint Valentine is observed on February 14th of each year and now includes celebration of love with the exchanging of “Valentines.”

LOVE YOUR BODY WITH THESE SUPERFOODS DURING COLD & FLU SEASON If you are concerned about contracting a cold or the flu this winter season consider using food as your medicine. There are many superfoods that can be added to your daily meals to boost your immune system. This year, don’t just rely on orange juice and chicken noodle soup. A healthy diet combined with exercise and adequate sleep can be your best defense against the flu. Adding the following superfoods to your regular diet will increase your chances of staying healthy and will decrease the severity and length of viruses that come your way.

Salmon is an excellent source of omega-3 which has been shown to boost immunity. This fatty fish works well as a main dish or on a salad. Garlic has been shown to kill viruses and may help prevent sickness. Sneaking raw minced garlic into your freshly cooked meals is a great way to maximize its nutritional content. For the very daring, try juicing a shot of it. Ginger is full of the natural plant compound gingerol, which can help fight off infection. I recommend juicing a small bit of it along with lemons, oranges, and spinach. You can also make a tasty homemade ginger tea by adding slices of the root to a boiling pot of water, and then add a splash of lemon and honey. Mushrooms have anti-bacterial properties and contain vitamins C, B6 and B12 which are responsible for boosting your immune system. They also have a high level of selenium which is known to decrease the risk of some cancers. Mushrooms can be thrown into soups, salads, side dishes and, of course, on top of pizza. Dark leafy greens such as kale and spinach are a great source of vitamin C, which won’t make a cold or flu go away but it can help fight the illness after you get it. Again, I recommend juicing these ingredients or eating them raw in a fresh salad. Red Bell peppers have almost three times the vitamin C content as an orange and taste divine when dipped in hummus. Include a wide variety of fruits and vegetables in your daily diet because they contain phytochemicals and antioxidants, which have health-protective qualities. If you are a not fan of fresh foods, nearly all these superfoods can be found in supplements at your local health food store.

Super Immune Boosting Tacos INGREDIENTS: 1 package of uncooked salmon 1 package of corn tortillas 2 handfuls of fresh mushrooms 4 garlic cloves- minced 1 red bell pepper- thinly sliced 1 avocado, thinly sliced

2 handfuls of fresh spinach 4 tbsp olive oil 1 tsp lemon juice 2 dashes of salt (optional) Mango salsa (optional) Goat Cheese (optional)

DIRECTIONS: 1. On the stovetop, sauté salmon in 2 tbsp olive oil and half the minced garlic. Flip the salmon after 4 minutes and then check to see if itʼs done after another 4 minutes. Add one more tablespoon of garlic, lemon juice, and a dash of salt during the last minute of cooking. 2. Sauté red peppers with remaining olive oil in separate pan on stovetop. After 3 minutes add mushrooms and more oil if needed. Add remaining garlic and a dash of salt after cooking after 4 more minutes. Vegetables should be fully cooked after 7 minutes. 3. Warm the tortillas on a stovetop pan or in oven. 4. Prepare tacos by placing a small amount of spinach, salmon, mushrooms, red peppers, and avocado slices in each tortilla. 5. Feel free to jazz up your tacos with store bought mango salsa and/or goat cheese. And, of course, serve with a warm cup of homemade ginger tea! Renee Simpson, mother of two, works as a Vitamin Specialist at a local health food store and enjoys spending time with her family in her hometown of Carlsbad, CA.

LOCAL HOT TOPIC:

Yoga and the Encinitas Union School District Well, it was an interesting night to say the least. Tuesday (December 4, 2012) was the EUSD school board meeting that discussed the success of the health and wellness program - which included the Yoga classes that had stirred up so much controversy. Immediately upon arriving I could see this was a popular event. There were probably around 200 people in attendance and it was standing room only when I showed up. The board discussions seemed to drag on and on…I think I was there for about an 1 hour before we actually started discussing what everyone was there to discuss. That being said, I was impressed by the administrationʼs care and concern of the children. They have implemented a number of healthy policies that any school should be jealous of, including organic local veggies and even crops grown by the kids. But even though there was a feeling of optimism in such measures, the energy of the room was just waiting to talk about the Yoga program.

The Discussion gets Heated When the topic finally did shift to the Yoga program, the Superintendent Baird stated what seemed to be an official policy: (to the board members) “The Yoga program taught in the Encinitas Union School District provides no religious instruction whatsoever. There is no discussion of spiritualism, mysticism, or religion in any context in our program. The students simply perform the physical components of movement and breathing related to mainstream Yoga. Yoga is a physical exercise regime practiced by millions of people all over the world representing many different religious beliefs.” That was all well and good, but a group of people in the audience just wasnʼt buying it. As the Superintendent talked, they were shaking their heads. Since this was a public board meeting, the parents were allowed to sign up and offer their perspective on the issue. Thatʼs when things started getting pretty passionate. As each parent came up and stated their own thoughts on the issue, I couldnʼt help but feel it was almost like a football game- each side clapped even cheered after their 2 minute allotted time. It was quite strange for me, as I began to perceive there were underlying issues that might be playing into each sides animosity towards the other. Personally, I felt there was a sort of resentment towards the parents opposed to the program because of their religious affiliation towards Christianity. Though there was indeed a mix of Christians on both sides, I could still feel- and did when I talked to people about it afterwards- that some persons thought all of the opposing objections were because of a Christian doctrine and had nothing to do with rationality. On the other side of that coin, I could see that the opposition felt compelled to fight something they truly thought was a breech of church and state. And when they were met with some resistance, that provoked them to double down and stick to their stance, to the point where a lawyer got involved to help them. The Specific Issues The proponents of the Yoga program point to Yogaʼs proven benefits and health as reasons for itʼs implementation. This is valid argument, and one that has been proven through much research. Children do, in fact, show a greater ability to concentrate after practicing Yoga. The opponents point to the source of the grant for the program as a major concern. The Jois Foundation in Encinitas has donated over $500k to make the program a reality - and Ashtangaʼs history as a form of Hatha Yoga steeped in tradition and spirituality is something they think is crossing over into the program, because the postures themselves are inherently reverential to different Gods. They claim the teachers are teaching the Primary Series of Ashtanga. They also think there could be an ulterior motive to expand this program all across the nation in order to promote Ashtanga. Who was Right & Who was Wrong? I am for the Yoga program, in case you havenʼt read before. I believe in Yoga because I have seen it change lives. But both sides have their own valuable motives and reasonable stances. There is a legitimate concern from the parents opposed to the program. Original Yoga (not westernized Yoga) is undeniably spiritual in itʼs aspirations. Even though the physical postures do predate the formation of Hinduism, they evolved with the religion and took on that spiritual role. But I was stunned when the opposing parents claimed the kids classes themselves were the Primary Series from Ashtanga. (these are set sequence classes). I cannot imagine a child doing the Primary Series, because in all honesty, I canʼt fully do it myself. That class is no joke; Ashtanga prides itself on being one of the most physically demanding types of Yoga. . . ever. I would be shocked if they were doing it. But the amount of division is why I think something needs to shift in the debate. Both sides should come to a compromise, and recognize they both have some valid points. Final Thoughts I think this situation can be resolved, and I hope it will be. These benefits should be available to everyone, and I think it is worth it for both sides to compromise a little. My hope is that maybe…just maybe….one day both sides will be able to do something like “Conscious Movement and Conscious Breathing” and afterwards go about their day without a second thought. Maybe I am too hopeful, or too naive; but whatever happens, I know that eventually more and more schools will explore this topic, and when they do I want them to point to this school as a model for how to resolve whatever issues come up. Because in the end. . . itʼs just about the kids, right? Matt is an enthusiastic Yoga teacher and life voyager. He enjoys reading, writing, practicing and meditating. What Are YOU Reading?

Enjoy our mom-to-mom book review page written by the organizer of North County based Hip Chicks Book Club, & see what books were real page turners and which one are better left on the shelf!

A Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin A Game of Thrones is the first book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series by George R. R. Martin. It takes place in Westeros, which I imagine is much like medieval Europe, and follows several families on their quest for the Iron Throne. I’m just going to come out and say that I’m so glad I watched the HBO series before reading this 800 page epic. There are so many characters, and Martin’s writing is so descriptive, that keeping everybody straight can be challenging. I’ve never thought of myself as a Sci-Fi/Fantasy fan, but I really enjoyed the storylines (especially those involving Arya Stark and Tyrion Lannister). Although the writing can be very violent and sexually graphic, the novel is well worth the read. If you liked this book, the second book in the series is A Clash of Kings.

In Twenties Girl by Sophie Kinsella, Lara Lington begins to see the ghost of her Great Aunt Sadie after attending her funeral. Sadie takes Lara on quite the adventure to find her missing necklace and Lara learns the importance of family along the way. I love that Sophie Kinsella’s books are light, romantic, fluffy and enjoyable and they don’t take long to read. This book doesn’t disappoint in all those areas and even throws in a little mystery as well. I found the book perfect for the beach or unwinding after a long day. A True Storey: The Journey to a Fatherʼs Love Growing up without a father, coping with an alcoholic mother and a brother who suffered from drug addiction, Peri Storey’s perseverance allowed her to make positive changes toward a better future and to eventually help others realize their dreams. When Storey was four years old, her father walked out of her home and life, leaving behind her mom and older brother, Mark. Storey’s wealthy father left her family with nothing, but sent money from time to time. Upon his death, Storey’s father’s left her with money to spend, which unfortunately aided in the growth of her mother’s alcohol addiction and began Mark’s addiction to crack. To ease the pain of her life, Storey turned to food, gaining enormous amounts of weight. Following several lavish purchases, family members borrowing money and Mark’s arrest for murder, the money Storey first received from her father’s estate was gone after a few short years.

ROCK HERO: Peri Storey

Living alone on a government check of $35 a week, $180 in food stamps and struggling with going from rags to riches to rags again, Storey finally had enough. She earned her college degree, with top grades and honors. When she graduated, she pursued her goals to lose weight and move up the ranks of her new job. With her drive and determination, Storey accomplished both by losing nearly 80 pounds and earning five promotions in five years. Not yet 30-years-old and with benefits, Storey was earning $140,000 a year. However, even with her accomplishments, Storey still felt unfulfilled. But one day, a friend of Storey’s helped her realize what she was really missing: a connection with her Father. After hearing the words from a Bible passage in Galatians 3, Storey realized that she no longer had to wonder about her father because she finally found Him at last. The inspiring verse reads, "If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise…. So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith.” In 2010, Storey founded the Rock Ministry, Never Knew a Father’s Love, in hopes of giving everyone an opportunity to connect with their heavenly Father and to share their pains, dreams and triumphs concerning a father who was either absent or negligent during their childhood. Because interest in the ministry is fast-growing, talk of expanding Never Knew a Father’s Love to other areas is prominent, without end. "I could have suffered my entire life without a father," says Storey. "But my heavenly Father saw to it that didn't happen. I just want to make sure everybody has a chance to have a daddy."
