o Ho Ho! Happy holidays! I always look forward to December as a time to sit back, relax and enjoy the company of family and friends (it’s supposed to be relaxing, right?!). Well, hopefully! It’s never easy to feel like a calm cucumber when endlessly deciding what to get everyone for Christmas or if they will they even like what I get them. This year I hope to put as much of the holiday stress aside, and enjoy the joyful spirit of the holidays and hope that all of you can too! Perhaps the biggest blessing is being able to celebrate some time away from work. Homes are filled with the sights and sounds of the season: fires in the fireplace and the wonderful aroma of yummy home cooking filling the kitchen. The most valuable time, perhaps, is the time spent around the table catching up with out of town family members, and of course the looming visit from Santa that keeps the kiddos in check (thank goodness for the Elf on a Shelf, right?)! Here at North County Kids Magazine, we want to help you enjoy this season as much as possible. From the fun Celeb Holiday Traditions on page 6, and the hilarious Down to Earth Dad: What the Elf? on page 21, to our Santa Sightings Guide on page 16, we’ve mixed humor into this issue to keep that smile on your face from fading! Enjoy the helpful Events Calendar on page 7 and the Winter Camp Guide on page 12 to keep your calendar jam packed this holiday seaon! Of course we are chalk full of kid spotlights including our special School of Rock North County Kid of the Month! Enjoy!

Stay Merry!

Spencer Layne Q&A

Where were you born? I was born in Los Angeles, CA but pretty much have grown up in Carlsbad.

What is your favorite thing about living in North County? I like the beach the best. I have lots of really great friends here too and we love to hang out at the beach, surf, and play music. How old are you? I’m going to be 16 this month and am getting my drivers license soon. What grade are you in and where do you go to school? I’m a sophomore at Sage Creek High School in Carlsbad. What are some of your hobbies? I like to skateboard, surf, play video games, but mostly I love to play music. What instrument do you play? Well, I play a lot! Primarily I play guitar and sing, but I also play bass, drums, keyboard, and I’m trying to learn the saxophone. When did you start playing the electric guitar? I started playing about 2 ½ years ago. My dad challenged me to play a real guitar instead of playing the guitar on the video game Guitar Hero. My neighbor loaned me his electric guitar and I went online to teach myself what I could. Once I learned some basics I wanted to take lessons. That is when we found out about the School of Rock in Oceanside. What is School of Rock? It is an after school performance based music program. I take private lessons and then rehearse once a week with other kids in a band setting. We do three shows a year. I’ve done shows with the music of Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, The Who…classic rock stuff. There is also an audition only house band that I have been in for about 1 ½ years. We rehearse once a week and play community events, private parties and have even been invited to play at the Long Beach International Motorcycle Show two years in a row. That was by far my favorite experience. What do you want other kids to know about the School of Rock? It is a place where you can chill and meet other kids with the same interests. Everyone

Oncoming Traffic

respects each other, has a great time, and learns how to play really cool music.

are so many different careers in music…I am looking into possibly becoming an Entertainment Lawyer.

Do you have any upcoming gigs? Yes, in addition to a Rolling Stones show in January at the Star Theater in Oceanside, I have my own band. We are called Oncoming Traffic and we have a following on social media. We have been writing songs and performing gigs and hope to be in the Carlsbad Battle of the Bands Teen Scene again this February. Last year we competed but didn’t have any original songs so this year we thought it would be fun to try writing.

Is there anything else you want our readers to know? It is really important to always try new things and never let fear hold you back. There are so many people to thank…all the AMAZING teachers and staff at School of Rock for being so committed to us kids and music. But I REALLY need to thank my parents for supporting my passion for music…thanks guys, you’re the BEST!!! NCK

What kinds of high school activities are you a part of? When I started at Sage Creek I was disappointed that they didn’t have a place for me in Orchestra as a guitarist…so I started a Rock Band Club called the Bobcats of Rock. What is the Bobcats of Rock Club? It’s a club for kids who play electric guitar, bass, drums, keys and sing and want to play in a band setting. We mostly stick to classic rock cover songs but we did play an original last Friday during our lunch jam session. Stephanie Souza is the vice president and she writes a lot of music and I wanted to give her song a full rock band sound.

Call today to set up a free trial lesson at the School of Rock in Oceanside!

How did you start the club? It wasn’t easy! First I had to find a teacher who would sponsor the club and then I needed a space to rehearse. Luckily my English teacher, Mr. Cordell, used to play electric guitar and he gave us space in his classroom to keep all the instruments AND a full drum kit. We rehearse during lunch…it is kind of crazy. Next year we hope to move into a better space and have after school rehearsals. Where did you get the instruments? Donations. I wrote people who were selling on Craigslist and asked! It was amazing to see how many people were willing to give us instruments. Lots of people have instruments that they aren’t using or are broken and I have started a hobby of fixing guitars and amps too. What is next? Well, I want to learn to play the saxophone. I figure if I can play the sax that would make me an even better musician. I hope to play music for the rest of my life, no matter what I choose to do for a career. Music usually doesn’t pay the bills, but that doesn’t mean I shouldn’t do it, right? There

What is your favorite holiday memory?

“I do a tree-trimming party every year. At my party, we always do chili: turkey, regular beef and vegetarian. Everybody is satisfied.” Jennifer Aniston

“It doesn’t matter where we meet around the world as long as we are together. Whether we are eating turkey, a grilled cheese sandwich or rice and beans. Our tradition is to be together.” Zoe Saldana

“My first Christmas with my daughter (Harper Renn Smith, 21 months). Being a parent makes the holidays that much more special.” Tiffani Thiessen

“My grandmother’s cooking. She cooks every Thanksgiving and Christmas, and she cooks enough food to feed an actual army. And somehow my family manages to eat all of it.” Justin Timberlake “Just the thought that Santa was coming all the way from the North Pole to Coatzacoalcos (in her home country of Mexico) to bring me my gifts, and the anticipation of waiting the next morning, you know? I love Christmas and I loved it as a child. I had lost a little bit of the flavor of it and now that I have a child (daughter Valentina, 4, with husband Francois-Henri Pinault) — she brought it all back to me. I enjoy it just as much now.” Salma Hayek “Warm cinnamon rolls on Christmas morning.” Nate Berkus

“I just love getting a huge group of family together. I mean, I have so much fun with my entire family. I have a lot of them and we’re all over the country, but it’s always great when we all get together and just spend that time.” Taylor Lautner

Q&A

How has living in North County affected your skating career? There are a lot of really cool skate spots/parks around. Having access to Aura Skateboarding Park has been key. North County also gives you access to pros that live here and skate locally at some of the good skate parks. Who are some local pros and companies that have helped you in your achievements? Aura Skateboarding Park has been awesome. The instructors there are amazing. I have learned so much from Matt, Hunter, Luke and Lindsay. Doug at Aura really puts on a great program. I also spent some time at Neal Mims Skating Academy and learned a lot

there also. I even got to spend time with Ryan Sheckler, Chris Cole, Lindsay Robertson, and Neal Mims, who have all helped me and given me tips. Where do you see yourself professionally in 5 years? Hopefully sponsored and doing some competitions in street leagues or freestyle skating. What’s your favorite after-school snack? Doritos, Tapatio Style. What advice do you have for other kids thinking about learning how to skateboard? Keep practicing and stay positive. Don’t stop if you fall down! Be sure to pick yourself back up! Don’t be afraid to ask questions and get help.

We hear that you have several other talents and hobbies, can you tell our readers about those?

I like to play Lacrosse, it’s a great game. I like playing the drums and, of course, video games! How do you juggle your other interests and skateboarding? I skate most of the time because it is my main focus. I put most of my effort there but I’m always sure to enjoy my other interests too! Is there anything else you want to add? Skating takes a lot of hard work but if you stick with it, stay positive and keep working, you’ll get better. NCK

Have you ever had any shark run-ins? Other sea creatures? Yes, just recently when I was shortboarding Beacons. I was sitting on the outside, I look to my left and I saw a big black and grey fin which started to circle around me, then I saw the shape of the head and it was a Hammer head shark probably over ten feet long. I was in shock so I just sat there until the fin went under, then I paddled in as fast as I could.

Where is your go-to surf gear shop? Hansens or Surf Ride. What’s the biggest wave you’ve ever surfed? Las Gaviotas, Baja this summer. It was over 11 feet and really scary. Is there anything else you would like to add? I love surfing because I consider it a lifestyle, I plan on surfing till forever! NCK

Rhoades School Science Fair Project Earns National Honors

O

n weekend mornings last year when many other middle school students may have been at home in bed or simply relaxing, Daniel Bruce, then an eighth grader at The Rhoades School, was out in the field working diligently on his science fair project. Daniel was busy recording observations of bird activity at four separate lagoons along 100 miles of Southern California coastline. Using a variety of scientific instruments, Daniel logged the weather conditions and noted the tide levels. Daniel then spent hours documenting bird species and the numbers of birds he encountered at each lagoon visit. As he made observations at the coastal reserves, Daniel noticed a significant human presence. He grew concerned regarding the possible impacts of human intrusion and urban noise. Daniel decided to investigate. He used a laser rangefinder to try to determine at what distance a particular bird species would take flight in response to human intrusion. He measured and recorded these distances during multiple visits at the various lagoons. Using a digital decibel meter he also recorded the average noise levels at each of the marsh environments. Daniel did not observe a correlation of noise to bird activity, but he did find that birds in locations with more frequent visitors seemed to grow accustomed to people, permitting intruders to approach at a closer distance before flying. However, another relationship Daniel discovered was that the greater the number of visitors, the fewer the number of bird species. The Rhoades School encourages students to pursue science projects about which they are passionate, reminding students that they too can contribute to the body of scientific knowledge. Daniel entered the County Science Fair in March of 2014, winning the prestigious Life Science Runner-up Sweepstakes Award, the coveted San Diego Zoological Society Award and many more professional awards. In April of 2014 Daniel attended the California State Science Fair and was awarded First Place Medal for the State of California in the Category of Zoology. Daniel then applied to the national science fair contest, the Broadcom Masters Middle School STEM competition. From June until September the judges reviewed the more than 2000 eligible science fair entries. Finally in mid- September of 2014, the 30 Finalists for the national contest were announced, and Daniel Bruce became a National Science Fair Finalist. On October 23, 2014, Daniel flew to Washington to participate in a five day celebration and competition sponsored by the Broadcom Corporation and the Society for Science and the Public (SSP). At the competition, Daniel presented his project to the judges and to the public at the Smithsonian Natural History Museum. During the five day affair, the students participated in team event challenges led by respected scientists and even got to meet with President Obama! Daniel was chosen by his peers to compose and deliver the “class

speech for the National Science Fair Finalists at the Awards Ceremony held at The Carnegie Institute of Washington on the evening of October 28, 2014. At the ceremony, the Broadcom Masters presented First and Second Place National Awards in four categories, representing the four STEM components, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. For his project entitled Flight Initiation Distance: Human Presence Impacts on Lagoon Bird Response, Daniel Bruce earned the Science Category National Second Place Award with prizes including, a check for $2500, an iPad, an asteroid named after him by M.I.T. Lincoln Laboratories and a two week all expenses paid trip to a summer camp of his choice, such as NASA Summer Camp. Daniel Bruce is now in high school, attending Canyon Crest Academy in San Diego. Daniel’s winning science fair project was carried out at The Rhoades School in Encinitas under the guidance of his science teacher and mentor, Mrs. Roxanne Hunker. NCK Successful students like Daniel Bruce embrace the opportunity to learn; these individuals value, appreciate and acknowledge the inherent rigor required of academic study and truly love learning for its own sake. This is the mindset fostered at The Rhoades School; our students recognize that innate ability must be combined with focused effort in order to achieve noteworthy results and that effort, persistence and resiliency each play a critical role in the lives of accomplished people. Down To Earth Dad

What the Elf?

T

he following is a true story. The events described took place in December 2011. Only the names have been changed to protect the innocent... When the phone rang I didn’t think much of it. The caller ID indicated it was the neighbors from down the street. I assumed they were calling to invite us over for a little holiday merriment, which wasn’t uncommon in our neighborhood. But there was nothing festive about the tone on the other end of the line. I recognized there was something wrong when my neighbor failed to start the conversation with a customary salutation and instead launched into what I assumed was an eggnog induced tirade. “Sofia has ruined the Elf on the Shelf,” she shouted. Part of me considered responding with “What’chu talkin’ ‘bout, Willis?” But I quickly realized that an obscure reference to the 80s sitcom Different Strokes would only make my disgruntled neighbor more irate. So instead I summoned the skill set I learned during my years on active duty in the United States military, and I attempted to diffuse this hostile yuletide situation. “I am very sorry if my daughter broke your Elf on the Shelf. I will go and buy you

a new one tomorrow,” I offered, in an act of complete appeasement. My daughter is a good kid, with no behavioral problems. But the Elf on the Shelf is a little creepy, so I could totally envision a scenario where she grabbed it off of the neighbor’s mantel and ripped off the head, or something like that. “It can’t be fixed,” my neighbor screamed. But the situation appeared fixable to me and I wasn’t yet ready to give up. “Yesterday I went to Target and they had hundreds of them. I’m sure they still have some.” “She didn’t break it. She ruined it.” Now I was really confused. My aggravated neighbor quickly clarified, “She told Madison that it was impossible for the Elf on the Shelf to go to the North Pole every day and report to Santa because it’s too far away. Now Madison is crying!!!” Our daughters were the same age, but apparently my child had mastered the concept of deductive reasoning a little quicker than her kid, and she poked a few logical holes in the Elf on the Shelf mystique. “SHE RUINED OUR FAMILY TRADITION,” bellowed my neighbor. It was at this point that I couldn’t believe I was actually having this conversation. In summary, a neighbor was on the phone

yelling at me because my kid told her kid the truth about the Elf on Shelf. If you want to get mad at me because my kid threw a rock at your car or punched your kid in the face, well, I totally understand. But to launch an attack over the Elf on the Shelf struck me as a bit unreasonable. “What do you want me to do about it?” I asked. My question was met with dead silence on the other end of the phone, as visions of angry and confused sugar plums danced in my neighbor’s head, until she finally said, “Well… I just wanted to tell you.” “Okay. Merry Christmas,” I told her. I hung up the phone without any animosity towards my neighbor, because I understand that the holidays can be very stressful and sometimes people go a little loopy over things like the Elf on the Shelf. So this year, when you are running around North County looking for the last deluxe marble kendama, take a deep breath and remind yourself that life is good. Happy Holidays from the Down to Earth Dad. NCK The Down to Earth Dad is a lawyer by day and youth soccer coach by night. He lives in Carlsbad with his wife and two kids.

Shopaholic to the Stars by Sophie Kinsella Becky Brandon is back in this seventh book in the Shopaholic series. When her husband, Luke, takes on a top movie star as his client, the family moves to Hollywood where Becky believes this is her big chance to become the celebrity stylist she’s always dreamed of being. But will it be worth it? Ok. I have to say it. This is not the best book in the series. But I still enjoyed it. I just wish there had been more character development, especially with Becky (will she ever learn?!). But this series has held such a place in my heart for the past 12 years or so, that I’d read any other book that this series will offer. And there will be more!

I give this one a C+. If you haven’t read the whole delightfully fun series, the first book is Confessions of a Shopaholic.

5 Lunch Box Ideas

Even for the most creative culinary moms, the process of packing school lunches can be overwhelming. Just the simple act of finding items your kids will eat can lead to a roadblock. Kidstir, a monthly subscription service providing kits filled with hands on food adventures for kids, suggests climbing out of the lunch rut by getting your kids involved in the prep work.

Check out their 5 tips for thinking outside the lunch box. 1

DIY Taco Kit

Help your kids pack up taco toppings in separate containers and let them build their own tacos at lunch. Warm leftover taco filling (beans, beef, shredded chicken) and pack it in a Thermos. Then pack individual containers with grated cheese, salsa, lettuce, rice, and tortillas or taco shells. At school, they can set up a taco bar in the cafeteria!

2

Make-YourOwn Sub

To prevent those soggy sandwiches, pack up the fixings for a sub and let you kids assemble it at school. Include fillings such as lettuce, olives, tomatoes, and deli meats, along with a small container of mayo or olive oil and a fresh baguette or sub roll.

Food on a Stick

5

Salad Bar in a Jar

Food always tastes better when it’s served on a stick. Send toothpicks along with fruit and cheese and meat and let your kids make colorful
kebabs in the lunch room.

3

Pita Pocket

Send chicken or turkey salad (made with Greek yogurt instead of mayo for a healthy alternative) in a container along with a wrapped up piece of pita bread. At school, the kids can stuff their pockets (or choose to eat them separately with a fork).

Layer a mason jar with salad stuff. Start with dressing on the bottom of the jar. Then add layers of lettuce, grated carrot, chickpeas or diced meats, and tomatoes. At school, kids can shake it up and eat it right out of the jar.
