From me to YOU!

appy April everyone! Like they say, “April showers bring May flowers,” but since we live in the most beautiful place in the world, I’m moving ahead with some wishful thinking and predicting no more rainy days! We start out the month on a funny-note thanks to April Fools Day… so steer clear of fake dog “do-do” and be sure to check for saran wrap on the top of any and all bottles. Oh, and don’t forget about the standard sugar/salt mix-up! If you make it through April 1st, you have two weeks before the dreaded April 15th tax filing deadline! I don’t know about you, but I think April 16th should be a national holiday, we’ll call it Allday Happy Hour Day (& the tab is on Uncle Sam of course)! For your entertainment this month, we’ve included some great features including Apps for an Eco-Friendly Home & Lifestyle, Pinterest Picks: Earth Day and Celeb Tracker: Eco-friendly Stars. On this Earth Day (April 22) be sure to reboot your inner tree-hugger and aim to make some more earth-conscious decisions for the rest of the year. And happy Easter (April 20) to everyone out there… and happy egg hunting (we suggesting going for the chocolate ones)! We also have tons of great local events listed on our Local Events Calendar: What’s Happening, but our top pick for April is definitely the San Diego Kids Expo & Fair at the Del Mar Fairgrounds April 26-27. Be sure to come to the event and follow our Passport to Fun (on page 28) and be entered to win our Grand Prize! (Trust us, this prize pack is worth it!!) Our featured North County kids are some of the most talented we’ve spotlighted in the magazine yet. Check out our Skateboarder of the Month, Surfer of the Month, and North County Kid of the Month. As always, thank you for choosing North County Kids Magazine and shoot me an email with any suggestions or comments... that’s what I’m here for!

Q&A

When did your love for writing begin? I have been writing since first grade when we kept daily writing journals. I really enjoy persuasive writing (debates, opinion pieces) over personal, anecdotal writing. How did you come up with the characters and plot for your winning play, “A Perfect Home?” I wrote the play as part of a school playwriting project. We were given the theme of migration and I thought about having rats trying to find a home for themselves, just like humans would have to. Except rats are at the mercy of their environment more than humans are. When you wrote this play in your 5th grade class, did you have any idea it would win the Young Playwrights Project and be read in front of a live audience? I had no idea. I wrote the play as part of a school project and my acting mentor, Aleta Barthell, suggested I submit it to the California Young Playwrights Contest. I knew Miss Aleta from Kids Act!, an after-school acting program that I participated in at the Encinitas Community Center from second to fifth grade. When Miss Aleta came to Paul Ecke to do a two-week playwriting program in our fifth grade class I was really excited to get to work with her again!

How does it feel knowing that your play will be read at the Old Globe? Really nice. The Old Globe Theatre is a world-famous theatre and it is amazing that my play gets to be performed on a stage where so many important works have been presented to audiences. I’ve seen Shakespeare in the round there and it’s really exciting to see my play in the same venue. Who will stage-read the play? A few months ago I got to go to auditions where actors tried out for the characters in my play. The director of my play really cared about my opinions about who I thought should be selected for the main characters of my play. This was one of the most exciting parts of the whole project. We had several production meetings where actors and the director asked me how my play should be produced and presented. Do you see writing being a part of your future, potentially as a major in college or future job? My dad thinks it would be cool for me to be a professional writer. I love writing, but I also enjoy drawing, painting and digital media. So, I am using my interest in writing to produce video projects on my computer right now.

What is your favorite genre to write and why? I like writing non-fiction because I learn things about the real world. I like to research bizzare topics that few mortals know about. Some of the things I have written about are Poveglia Island (look it up), the pros and cons of mechanical pencils vs. wooden pencils, why we don’t need cursive writing anymore and the differences between “nerds” and “geeks”. What do you find intriguing about writing for stage? I like that plays have a dialogue between characters. Writing for the stage is also fun because I get to see my ideas come to life! How do you hope the audiences will respond to your play? I want them to laugh and find my story compelling. I know that people who see my play will all see it differently, based on who they are. What advice do you have for other aspiring writers? Research things you are interested in and write about that. I always find strange and interesting things on the Internet. I recommend using animals as characters because then you can make fun of humanity through the animal’s point of view. Is there anything else you would like to add/ want our readers to know? My favorite font is Futura and I detest ponchos. NCK

Selected to be on the invitation-only developmental squad of the PacSun USA Junior Surf Team for the 2013-2014 season. The developmental squad consists of 7 boys and 2 girls under the age of 16 that have been handpicked and selected to train with the PacSun USA Junior Surf Team. Earned 3rd place in the Girls Under 12 Division and made it to the semi-finals in the Girls Under 14 Division at the Surfing America Nationals 2013. West Coast Champion and Title Conference winner in the Girls Under 12 and Girls Under 14 Divisions of the Western Surfing Association. Featured in a full-length surf movie called Manufacturing Stoke (www.manufacturingstoke.com) released in April of 2011.

Q&A

How has living in North County affected your surfing career? I’m able to participate in tons of contests each and every weekend. Practicing and competing at North County Reefs and beach breaks has really helped my surfing and competitive skills. Who are some local pros and companies that have helped you in your achievements? I have to thank two of my Surf coaches, Jonny Maher and Skip McCullough. Without their training and coaching I probably would not have accomplished all that I have. California Pizza Kitchen (CPK) is my biggest sponsor that really makes it possible for me to compete and surf. Not only do they have the best food on the plane but they have been a huge help making sure that I am geared up with the best equipment and I am able to compete in all the contests. A big shout out to Rusty Surfboards who make the best Surfboards on the Planet and Matuse Wetsuits for keeping me warm those long winter days! Any advice to other surfers out there looking to improve their skills? Get a surf coach. Your

dad can only teach you so much. Surf each and everyday! Most importantly, enjoy what you do. If not, get a job. What do you love the most about surfing? Why? Being outdoors, in the elements and in the ocean. Nature is all around me, above the water and below. Riding the waves with my friends and doing what I like to do best. Getting barreled and hitting the lip hard right in front of all my friends is the best feeling ever! Have you ever had any shark run-ins? Other sea creatures? I have never seen any sharks but I know they are there. I try not to think about it too much. If it’s my time and I become a meal, what a way to go! I love surfing with all the dolphins, fish, birds and seals. You could never get this type of excitement at any water amusement park Where do you see yourself professionally in 5 years? Hopefully surfing will become a summer Olympic sport and I will be representing the USA in the year 2020. I would like to also aim for the stars and become a world champ,

Stance: Regular Foot Sponsors: California Pizza Kitchen, Rusty Surfboards, Matuse Wetsuits, FCS, Spy Sunglasses, Headhunter, Sector9 & Joe Roper’s Ding Repair

Hobbies: Surfing, Skin Diving, Skateboarding & Gardening Favorite Surf Spot: WindanSea and Blacks Long board or short board: Short Board for sure, but when the SSS or the Coalition Contest come up, I surf on a long board as well.

Who is your favorite pro-surfer? Tom Curren is my hero. He has to be the coolest guy I have ever met and his surfing has more soul in it than any one else. If I could surf like anyone it would be him! I look up to Carissa Moore and Bethany Hamilton for inspiration and they both RIP!!! Where is your go-to surf gear shop? There is only one surf shop to go to and that’s Mitch’s in La Jolla and Solana Beach. Mitch is the coolest and has everything you need. Mitch has the best employees including Matt of Matuse, Carter, Brett, Lliam & Dane. What’s the biggest wave you’ve ever surfed? Solid 8 foot, Hanalei, Bay Soup Bowl in the Barbados and 10’ out at Middles, just north of WindanSea. Is there anything else you would like to add? Family 1st, school 2nd, then surfing. I love to surf but if my grades start to suffer, then it’s back to the books until I get caught up. NCK April 2014 | North County Kids

Concussion Awareness. My biggest sponsors of course, are my Mom and Dad who believe in me no matter what. Started Skating at Age: I first asked for a skateboard at age 3, but Mom and Dad thought it might be too dangerous. They finally gave in at age 4 ½ since I kept on asking! Started Competing: I went to my first competition at age 5, and I’ve been competing ever since. Favored Discipline: That is super hard to answer! I love Vert the most, but I can also say that I love Bowl, and street, too. Mega Ramp is super fun too, but I don’t get to skate it as often as I’d like to!

Q&A

How has living in North County affected your skating career? I get to skate so much more here than I ever have before because the weather here is so amazing. This is the first winter I haven’t had to shovel off a skatepark to be able to skate on it! There are so many great skateparks here too, and also some pretty terrific backyard ramps.

I’d love to be doing demos and introducing skateboarding to people who don’t know about it. It would be amazing to be Pro by then too! What’s your favorite after-school snack? It depends on what is in the fridge! I love apples, pineapples, grapes, Pepper Jack Cheese, and I also eat leftover pasta too!

Who are some local pros and companies that have helped you in your achievements? Most of my sponsors are here in Southern California, so that is great because they get to see me skate more often. I am especially thankful for Tony Hawk and Elliot Sloan who open their ramps up to me to practice on sometimes, which is so awesome. I am grateful to Aura Skatepark for giving me a place to shred too!

Do you get nervous before every competition? If so, what do you do to relax and calm your nerves? I do sometimes get nervous, you might see me before a competition breathe out and shake both my hands like I am shaking out the nerves. After that I just breathe, and drop in! I mostly try to remember that it’s all about having fun and trying your best. I also pray before and after every competition. It’s cool that my Mom and Dad are proud of me no matter what happens.

Where do you see yourself professionally in 5 years? Just doing what I do now—just bigger and better, and with more opportunities! I hope I am skating all over the world and competing.

What advice do you have for other kids thinking about learning how to skateboard? Just have fun but wear a helmet! You can fix broken arms and legs, but when you hurt your

head it can be super serious. I know a lot of people don’t think wearing a helmet is cool, but neither is having your life changed by a head injury! How do you juggle your other interests and skateboarding? What other interests?!? Seriously, it would be super easy for me to just want to skate all the time, but school is important too, and so is family. I like to shoot hoops at school too. My sister Emma plays competitive volleyball so we are always going skating or to volleyball after school or on the weekends. No matter how busy we are (which is pretty busy!) Mom makes sure we spend some time catching up every day - even if it is in the parking lot between activities! Is there anything else you want to add? Anything you want our readers to know? That it’s okay to dream big, no matter how crazy your dream is! NCK

Spotlight Audrey Welch: Arbonne Regional Vice President How long have you been a part of Arbonne? I have been using these super clean, amazing products for over 11 years! It wasn’t until I had my first daughter, Emma in 2005 that I came into the business. Working from home has been such a blessing! What attracted you to the company? At first, what attracted me to Arbonne was the pure, safe, beneficial products. My daughters suffered from eczema when they were babies and the Arbonne Baby Oil cured their skin within 48 hrs! Plus, after seeing the effects of using the anti-aging RE9 Advanced line in my own skin it was impossible to not share it with others! Being able to be my own boss and have a flexible schedule to raise my girls was at the top of my priority list! Arbonne provides an easy, low-risk way to start a home based business. I knew I had nothing to lose and everything to gain! Within a year of starting my “part-time” business I earned a new Mercedes-Benz from Arbonne and had replaced my full time income plus some!! What are your top 2 favorite Arbonne skin care products? Why? Hands down, our RE9 Advanced anti-aging line is my #1 fav!!! I love being active and spend a TON of time outdoors with my husband, our two girls (Emma, 8 and Cameron 6) and our chocolate lab (Santana) so having a skincare line that reverses and prevents sun damage has been key for me. My skin has never looked better, and that is worth sharing with ALL of my girlfriends. Every morning for as long as I can

22

North County Kids | April 2014

remember, I have started out my day with a protein shake with our Arbonne Essentials protein powder. It is a vegan, gluten/soy/dairy free blend that uses a pea protein isolate that is SO YUMMY!!!! My girls love them too! My favorite is to make them “Shrek Shakes” with vanilla protein, 1 cup of kale, 1 banana, almond milk and a few ice cubes. This is one of the only ways they have ever eaten kale. We heard that you recently completed the 30 day cleanse! Congrats! Tell us about the cleanse and how you felt during it and after. I put myself through our 30 day cleanse the month of January. It is a month of eliminating all the allergen causing foods (nixing the soy, gluten, dairy, sugar and processed foods) while implementing healthy habits. The built-in accountability and recipes that come with the plan made it literally fool-proof. Not only did I feel great and have renewed energy, but my headaches went away and I lost 10 lbs!!! What is something about Arbonne that the general public doesn’t know? I’m most amazed with the people (men & women) that we attract into our company! We have the best consultants!! I feel great about what I’m doing, because of the difference I’m able to make. Just $300 extra income can help families in the US avoid bankruptcy. I love being able to show people how to create that in their lives. The products will change your skin, but the business will change your life!!!!!

Is there anything else you want to add? I absolutely LOVE Arbonne’s Manifesto, so I would love to leave you with that: We are trailblazers, star reachers, bridge builders. We are life-changers, the original transformers. We are leaders. Teammates. Soulmates. We are Doctors, Lawyers, teachers, swim coaches, professors and athletes. Locked arm in arm. Connected at the heart. We are family. Mothers, daughters, fathers, sons. We are friends. We are Arbonne. We are green, and growing. And big on botanicals. We are pure, safe, beneficial. Always have been. Always will be. We are worldwide. World Class. We’re for FREEDOM. From radicals, gluten, and the 9-5. We’re for healthy, happy and Natural. We’re for generosity. Giving big and giving back. We believe in opportunity and optimism. We are warriors who work hard. Dreamer’s who dream big. We are owners of our own lives. We are Pure. Pure products, pure energy, pure hearts. We are Arbonne. NCK

Go Green Free

We don’t immediately become eco-geniuses. It takes time, effort, and education to get there, which is why this app is such a great place to start. There is no creating solar panels or learning to make a dress out of used corn husks; just practical and simple tips that are easy for anyone to implement into their daily lives. Whether it is catching the bus, or walking instead of using the car a few times a week; buying from a local farmer’s market instead of a grocery store, or just learning how to recycle for the first time; this app has you covered. Dirty Dozen Free

Worried about pesticides used in fruits and vegetables, but don’t have the money to buy organic produce? We have all been there, but there is a way around it. This app will help show you the most likely produce to have been contaminated, while giving you tips to get safe food for you and your family.
