May is also very special because we get to celebrate the wonderful moms in our lives on Mother’s Day, May 11th (although we should celebrate them every day). From mothers and grandmothers, to sisters and other relatives, be sure to give some extra love on May 11th to the special mothers in your life. Q&A
When were you diagnosed with Autism? At age 2, during my well baby check up, my mom was informed that I was behind in my language skills. People told her not to worry, I would be a late bloomer. She decided not to wait and to have me tested. At the conclusion of the testing they told her I was Autistic. As I got older they classified it as Aspergers Syndrome, which is on the Autism Spectrum. What were your thoughts/how did you react? It’s actually a funny story. It was my friend Eric in the 5th grade, who also had Aspergers Syndrome, who told me I was Autistic. He said we acted alike so I must have Aspergers Syndrome too. When I told my mom after school that day she said “yes, you do have Aspergers Syndrome” and asked how I felt about it. I told her I didn’t feely any different than the other kids. I think I said that because I was never treated as less than just because of my Autism. You are now a member of both the Ronald McDonald House charities Red Show Day and Autism Speaks. Congrats! How did you get involved with these charities? I became involved with these charities after my grandpa passed away in 2008. I needed to find a way to deal with my grief so my mom and I decided volunteering would be a great way to honor him.
Why is it important to you to be part of these causes? We chose Autism Speaks because we felt it was important to be advocates and share my story of my journey with Autism. We decided to volunteer for the Ronald McDonald House Red Show Day because we thought it was a great cause and standing on the street corner of the Ronald McDonald Shoe would be fun. Our first year which was the first ever Red Show Day we brought a group of theater kids with us and had so much fun. Now we get a group of great friends together every year to help us raise money for the house. Lastly my mom and I volunteer with Roses for Our Senior Friends. Christmas was my grandpa’s favorite holiday so I dress in his Christmas flannel and deliver roses to senior citizens. This event brings a great deal of joy to my heart because it’s not the quantity of the roses that I deliver that is important, it is the quality of time I spend with the person who receives them. What advice do you have for other kids that might have recently been diagnosed with Autism? Don’t think of Autism as a label, think of it as a map. How do you know how to get somewhere you’ve never been without a map? For some people it is easy to get to where they are going, they go tin a straight line. But for kids on the Autism Spectrum sometimes their road takes a few turns along the way. A map will not
guarantee the road traveled will be easy, but if you encounter a bump it will help you get around it and eventually get you back in the right direction to help you find success. What do you want their friends and family to know? Early diagnosis is the key to success for kids on the Autism Spectrum. Don’t wait to get help; the sooner the better. Then help them through the challenges and recognize their strengths. Kids on the Autism Spectrum are given amazing gifts and if you help to foster them we’ll strive. Other than being very active in the community, we hear that you enjoy acting as well. When did that start? I started when I was very young. I was around 3 years old when I took my grandpa’s video camera and stared making movies. I would write and act out scripts in front of the camera, I would make stop-motion videos, you name it! My grandpa always knew I would become an actor. He did everything he could to help encourage my acting including giving me my own video camera at the age of 9 and teaching me how to upload videos we had made together on YouTube. It was after he past away that I began to perform in youth theater. I plan to go on to college and study acting and pursue acting as a career. Is there anything else you would like to add? Q&A
How has living in North County affected your surfing career? Living in North County has allowed me to push my surfing to the next level because of the high level of competitive surfers and quality waves. On any given day there is always top talent in the water no matter where you surf. Living here has allowed me to be closer to the surf industry as well as get more time in the water. Who are some local pros and companies that have helped you in your achievements? How? Austin Ware and Kyle Knox have been coaching me for a few years now and they have been super helpful. They have helped me improve my technique, keep me in a good positive mindset, as well as raise my confidence level. Also surfing with world-class surfers like Taylor Knox, Rob Machado, and Josh Kerr really push me to want to become better and hopefully push my surfing to the next level. Any advice to other surfers out there looking to improve their skills? Whenever you go for a free-surf, think about proper technique and use each session to really improve your surfing. Run mock heats against yourself and really think about that session as a practice not just a free surf. Most importantly have a solid foundation of proper

technique and good habits before getting into the “air-game.” I see too many young kids trying to do airs and tail tricks before they can do a proper bottom turn to cutback combination. But always make sure to have fun! What do you love the most about surfing? Why? I love how surfing is my “getaway.” As soon as I hit the water nothing else matters. I don’t have to stress or think about what is going on at school, with friends, or at home. I find calmness when I am surfing. I feel like being in the water is where I can settle down, release all my built up energy and express myself through surfing. Have you ever had any shark run-ins? Other sea creatures? I’ve only been with some local little Leopard Sharks, but anyone can see them if they come to San Diego during the summer. I remember one time my dad and I got chased off by a bunch of dolphins that were protecting two gray whales nursing their pup. That was actually kind of sketchy. We paddled out to see what was going on and got a little too close for the whales’ liking! Where do you see yourself professionally in 5 years? In 5 years I will hopefully be graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. After that I would
like to travel and compete to gain some points on World Qualifying Series (WQS). Who is your favorite pro-surfer? My favorite prosurfer is Joel Parkinson. I don’t think anybody else in the world has more raw talent, technique, and style than he does. Where is your go-to surf gear shop? There is no better surf shop than Surf Ride. They have two locations, one in Solana Beach and the other in Oceanside. Everybody there is super cool and is really helpful. They have everything surf and skate related that one might need. What’s the biggest wave you’ve ever surfed? The biggest wave I have ever surfed would definitely be 30-35 ft Waimea Bay, Oahu, Hawaii. Surfing that wave definitely pushed my limits and has helped me gain a lot of confidence especially when it comes to bigger surf. Now, I want to go even bigger and push my limits even more. Is there anything else you would like to add? You can never know what you’re capable of until you push your limits and near your fears. Once you have broken those limits and conquered those fears you are capable of so much more. NCK

We hear that you have several other talents and hobbies, can you tell our readers about those? I have a ton of other interests. I play year round competitive baseball for MIT and San Marcos Youth Baseball. I like to surf, bike, and snowboard. My mom also encourages me to practice piano as much as I can. We are a very active family! How do you juggle your other interests and skateboarding? I try to get my homework done in the morning before school. I
n 1980 I pestered my dad to take me to Karma Records, the local music store in my town, after I saw the Village People on an episode of the Love Boat. Armed with a couple of dollars in my pocket from my 8th birthday, I bought my very first record. Unfortunately, the store was sold out of Macho Man and YMCA, so I had to settle for a vinyl single of the not-so-classic tune San Francisco You’ve Got Me. Something magical happened when the clerk behind the counter, who resembled Slater from Dazed and Confused, handed me the bag containing my record. I didn’t realize it at the time, but I had just embarked on a 35-year musical journey that would take me to record stores all over the world. Sadly, I’ve made the transformation from record stores to iTunes over the past few years. I held out as long as I could, but when Tower Records closed in 2006 I finally surrendered to Steve Jobs. Buying music online has its benefits. The
other night I was watching Live from Daryl’s House when I heard the music duo Johnnyswim for the first time. Five minutes later I owned their EP Heart Beats. Sure, downloading music is incredibly convenient, but there is a price for convenience. And that price is that my kids will never get to experience the fun of searching through the racks at a great record store. In college I once spent an entire Saturday afternoon trekking around record stores in New York City looking for import albums by the Jam. Part of it was about the music, but part of it was about the thrill of the quest. Searching iTunes just isn’t the same. My library of music has consisted of albums, cassettes and CDs. I even had a couple of 8-tracks. No matter the format, I always loved holding the tangible object in my hand. You can’t hold an MP3 in your hand, and definitely can’t spin a download of Revolution 9 backwards on your Fisher-Price record player to see if Paul is dead.
There is a great scene in the movie Almost Famous when William’s older sister bequeaths him her 1970s record collection, with a handwritten note that says, “Listen to Tommy with a candle burning and you will see your entire future.” Today she’d just give him her old iPod, which isn’t nearly as cool. Record stores aren’t totally extinct. There are still a few brick and mortar record stores trying to survive in an Amazon and iTunes world, like Lou’s Records in Encinitas. Lou’s Records has been around since 1980, which coincidently is the same year I bought my first record. I think I might take my kids over to Lou’s and show them how you’re really suppose to buy a record, and maybe when we are there I can score a secondhand copy of a vintage Village People album. Summer Safety Spring is here and summer is just around the corner and it’s time to get outside and enjoy the weather. The best way to ensure a fun and safe spring and summer is to be prepared. Did you know the majority of pool related injuries and drowning deaths occur in children ages 1-3 years? And they happen most commonly at home or at the home of family/friends. Be sure to review the “safety tips” below to make sure the fun doesn’t stop!

Make sure to look for mineral sunscreens that contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide since these block the sun on the surface of the skin as opposed to being absorbed.

Surf Muffins
Ever have one of those mornings where you’re running out the door, late for school, one shoe is tied and you just remembered you didn’t have breakfast? We have those days every now and then, too. Which is why we recommend Surf Muffins! Surf Muffins were created by Surfers years ago, by a surfer that was always late to everything because they were out “catching one last wave.” Surf Muffins are really good right out of the oven, but they’re even better when you’ve only got a minute to eat ‘em. Make them in advance, place them in baggies, and the next time you find yourself scrambling out the door, fear not! Surf Muffins to the rescue! Makes 12 muffins
Ingredients: • 1 cup sour milk * (add a tablespoon of vinegar to a one cup measure and fill to the top with milk. Let stand for 5 minutes) • ½ cup applesauce • ¼ cup (1/2 stick) butter, melted • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1 egg • 1/3 cup packed brown sugar
• ½ cup oat flour* (Blend instant oats in a blender until smooth!) • ½ cup whole wheat flour • 1 teaspoon baking soda • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon • 1 cup instant oats • ¼ dried fruit • ¼ cup almonds, chopped
Directions: 1
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F, and grease 12 muffin cups.

Combine sour milk, applesauce, butter, vanilla extract, egg, and brown sugar and blend well.

Stir together oat flour, wheat flour, baking soda, and cinnamon.

Add flour mixture to wet mixture and blend well.

Fold in oats, almonds, and fruit.

Fill muffin tins close to the top. (These aren’t high risers.)

Bake for 20 minutes or until toothpick inserted in the center of a muffin comes out clean.

Jake Ducey J
ake Ducey grew up local, looks like a pro surfer, hangs with Laird Hamilton and was one of the best high school basketball players in North County (voted MVP multiple times in Division 1). At age 19, Jake Ducey dropped out of college, left behind a basketball scholarship and a prescription drug filled life and set out to travel the world without a map in search of deeper meaning. Jake chronicled his experiences in his Amazon bestseller, Into the Wind, and traversed a multicity “Inspire My Generation” tour in 2013.
What made you decide to become an author? You know when you learn something and you just feel you HAVE to share it? That’s what happened to me while I traveled around the world, after I fell off a cliff and saw my life flash before me. I decided that I wanted my life to mean something, that I didn’t want to just go through the motions and if felt like it would make me happy to try and inspire others by writing a book. The only thing was that I didn’t exactly know how to write a book, as I hadn’t done it before. But Johnny Depp has a quote, “I like the challenge of trying different things and wondering whether it’s going to work or whether I’m going to fall flat on my face.” And I believe that the adventure of not knowing what was going to happen as an author, just like Johnny said, is what had me decide to be one. How has traveling changed your life? Traveling showed me that there’s a lot of people living with a lot less than me, and they are still happy. It put a lot of things in perspective and let me see that my life was a lot better than I thought. It helped me realize that I didn’t need to travel in order to make a difference, that right here in our community, there’s a lot of people who could use a smile, or a warm meal. What kind of community service do you do in North County? Around North County I volunteer at a few organizations like Urban Surf 4 Kids, which empowers foster children in and out of the water. We also cook food for the immigrants on the corner who are often looking for work. I also spend a lot of time
with kids, mentoring young people and trying to be my best to be a positive role model. How did growing up in North County shape you? Growing up in North County shaped me because I think it made me value life. I always grew up with a roof over my head and food to eat. When I went to other parts of the world, I saw that a lot of people don’t have those things. I think growing up in North County made me have a lot of compassion for other people and the challenges that they are going through. We live in one of the most beautiful places in the world. It’s always sunny. It’s not too crowded. The beaches are gorgeous. I can’t help but to smile when I walk around town. North County has just made me a happier person. There are so many opportunities and so many privileges that we can take advantage of! How can your book, Into the Wind, help kids with their lives? My hope is that it shows young people that their dreams aren’t as out of reach as they think. If they don’t know what their passions are, my hope is that the book shows them all of the surprises and joys that await us when we try new things and challenge ourselves. I think it does a great job of putting things in perspective. I spent a lot of time in extremely impoverished areas, and it can show young people that their problems really aren’t so bad, and that there is so much they can be grateful for, and so much joy in life. Do you have any advice for aspiring writers who may be reading? My advice
for anyone who has a dream, whether it’s writing or something totally different, is to just start experimenting. Just sit down (if you want to write) and just let your imagination go. There are no rules on how to write a great story. There are no rules on how to be a professional surfer, or whatever else. Anyone can do it, but you just have to try. Sadly, most people don’t ever try. What are your upcoming goals? Right now I have my focus in a few areas; we’re just finishing the film script for my book “Into the Wind,” which is being turned into a feature film. My goal is definitely to get that under wraps, as my vision has always been for it to be a major motion picture. Another project I am really excited about is a television show I am developing with the former executive producer of American Idol. We’re working on developing our ideas now, but our goal is definitely to land a major TV deal - with the intention of creating a show that inspires and informs young people. I also wrote another book that is coming out with Penguin in 2015, which I am really excited about! Another goal is of mine is to keep finding time for myself; to exercise, and to just hangout. A lot of times in the world we all have so much going on, especially kids with school and sports, that it can get overwhelming. Book Review
Megan Rath is a wife and mom of a 8 year old daughter and 4 year old son. She is the organizer of the Hip Chicks Book Club (www.meetup.com/hipchicksbookclub), a large group of diverse women of all ages that meets in North County every month. A native of North County all her life, she currently lives in Vista.
Me Talk Pretty One Day by Davis Sedaris This collection of short stories and essays by David Sedaris is, for the most part, hilarious. He’s one of those authors that seems to remember every part of his life perfectly, and can convey it to the reader with so much humor, that you think “How did all this happen to this poor guy?!” My favorite of his stories in this book are the ones about his sister, actress and author Amy Sedaris, wanting a fat suit and not being able to afford the whole thing, and the one where his father wants all of his kids to play instruments and form a family band like “The Partridge Family.” As an added bonus, this book makes one of the best audio books, because the author reads it himself.
I give this book a B+ If you liked this book, I suggest Naked, also by David Sedaris. You also might want to check out some of his readings on YouTube.

Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi Since birth, Juliette’s touch has been lethal. After accidentally killing an innocent child while trying to save him, she is institutionalized by her parents. But when the new government, called the Reestablishment, finds out about her, and wants to use her as a weapon, it takes all she has to break free and fight back. This is another one of those young adult dystopian series that have become so popular lately. It took a while to get used to Tahereh Mafi’s unusual writing style, and although it’s not in the same caliber as The Hunger Games or Divergent, it was still quite an enjoyable read with characters you connect to, and root for throughout the book.
I give this book a BIf you enjoyed this one, I suggest reading the next two books in this series, Unravel Me (#2) and Ignite Me (#3).
