ne thing often overlooked as a big draw to this nation are relationships. Many people flock here specifically with ‘relationship’ in mind. Some with absolute intent for them to be very short lived. While others come seeking to find a partner for life. This nation experiences different individuals who walk the Thai soil as in any other country. Let’s take a quick look at a few examples of relational expressions that we see in society today; even here in amazing Thailand. Single for life: This is the individual who can’t imagine staying bound to one person for their entire life. Does not feel the need for long term commitment no matter the duration; either short or long. Marriage: This individual believes in the sanctity of marriage and values commitment and monogamy in their relationship. Entrusting themselves to one individual for life. With the belief that their life partner shares the same value. Swingers: Married couples in agreement to go outside of their marriage commitment for acts of intermittent relationships or sexual exploits. A changed mind as to what they may have committed to when they first married. That being bound together in love for one another, forsaking all others and living solely with and for this other individual has now been modified towards ‘live in the moment’. Anything goes: This individual looks at relationships with what is often called the ‘free spirit’. Plays by their own rules as are befitting for one’s self. These rules are subject to change at

any given time depending on how this individual feels at present. The seeker: This individual has his/her personal desires and boundaries. Yet, is growing and experimenting. Sometimes with great personal success and at other times, great emotional turmoil. Thailand is not immune to seeing all of these types of relationships within the borders of this incredible nation. Both from within its borders and from foreigners alike. I’m sure that you yourself may have met these types in relationships and maybe even others not aforementioned. The question when it comes to relationships globally? Who gets to make the rules, enforce them and encourage them to be the ones worth following? The answer comes as a two edged sword. Relationships are extremely hard to navigate through because you are faced with the opinion and will of another human being. Unless you spend time to really get to know this individual you have no clue as to their relational compass. Even if you do, because each person is growing at different rates in time, even then you may face some incredibly painful experiences at the end of another person’s behavior. You’ve got a world of people with different relational viewpoints. Each one executing them through life experiences, following others examples, using relationships in trial and error, behaving impulsively with relationships. You may hold one view and this new relationship may hold another. It can get quite tricky. People wind up on the couch in a counselors office getting help to navigate through the relational havoc and
heart breaking experiences. Hoping to pick up the pieces of what seems to be a ship wreck of the soul. On the other hand there are those who have learned to navigate through relationships fairly well. They are listeners and communicators. Individuals whom have learned what matters most to them. Having discovered their own relational navigator. When relationships come their way that do not present the same relational language or values, they are happy to allow this individual to be someone that they met through their life’s journey. Now this comes with practice for everyone. No one is exempt to a little or a lot of heartbreak as they strive towards their sweet spot in relationships. As you make your plans to venture towards the “free land” check the gauge on your relational thermometer. What you deposit here and what you receive can be the very thing needed for you to have the experience of a lifetime here in the “land of smiles”. KOH PODA This is the iconic island of Krabi and the first and most dramatic one you can see from Ao Nang beach. Hop on a longtail boat - the local wooden boats with their picturesque prow and sail away surrounded by turquoise water.
THA POM NATIONAL PARK Thapom is a simple local national park, not the easiest to access, but certainly worth the trip. Just outside Ao Nang, Thapom is a place where salty seawater and freshwater from the mountains mix perfectly creating an observable stratified layer, where both sea fish and freshwater fish live separately but together. Close to Ao Thalane Bay, Thapom is a 30 minute drive from Ao Nang.
CHICKEN ISLAND This should be next on your list as it is right next to Koh Poda. From the right angle when passing Chicken Island (Koh Gai) you can catch a glimpse of a chicken’s neck and head, some would argue more like that of a turkey but it’s up to you. The second island, Koh Tub, is connected to Chicken Island by a sandy isthmus and people can walk from one to another at low tide. KOH HONG This island archipelago demands everyone’s attention as it is one of the highlights of Krabi Province. The Archipelago, a group of limestone islands with many hidden caves and lagoons makes it perfect for snorkeling and exploring. Make sure you visit Lading and Pakbia islands before Koh Hong as they are much less visited and sport a blend of both lush jungle and tropical waters. Koh hong is usually crowded until 3pm so we recommend visiting other Lading and Pakbia in the morning, then going to Koh Hong after the crowds have started to leave. KOH PHI PHI Private bays, limestone cliffs, waters rich in marine life and caves where swallow’s birds nests are harvested are all here on the island that Leonardo Di Caprio once rolled his hot bod in while filming ‘The Beach’ at the now iconic Maya Bay. KOH JUM & KOH SIBOYA Both are unspoiled tropical hide-aways that have a unique atmosphere. Tune in to the slow culture here, imbibe the peace and recharge your batteries with the soundtrack of lapping waves.
KHAO PHANOM BENCHA NATIONAL PARK At 20 km from Krabi Town, the Khao Phanom Bencha national park comprises waterfalls, streams, lush forests and caves. It is home to all kind of flora and wildlife and to the highest mountain in the region from which it takes it’s name. One of the features of the park is Huay Thoi Waterfall where water runs down onto several huge pools. TARNBOK KHORANEE NATIONAL PARK Located in the north of the province, Tarnbok Khoranee national park is made up of limestone mountains, verdant tropical forest, caves and beautiful islands. It is well known kayaking explorers as there are a number of tributaries curving into a number of small caves boasting ancient cave paintings. SA MORAKOT, THE EMERALD POOL Truly a natural wonder of Krabi: a pond of turquoise water with an average temperature of 30-40°C fed by a hot spring in the middle of the jungle in Klong Thom district, 70 kilometers from Ao Nang. HOT SPRINGS Situated in Klong Thom district, These natural hot springs are natures jacuzzis. They melt away tensions, relieve the body and mind with the fresh spring water running over mineral enriched limestone rocks.
KOH LANTA The developing island at the southern end of the province known for its prime sunset views, heaps of activities and glimpses into sea gypsy life. Koh Lanta is also a National Park that comprises many local islands surrounded by coral reefs, such as Koh Ngai, Koh Mook and the remote Koh Rok.

Reminder When visiting many of the national parks in Krabi there is often an entrance fee which you need to pay by cash at the time of entrance. This fee can vary but it is always between 90thb - 400thb per person. If you do book a tour through a local operator, please make sure to check with them prior to departing as to whether or not the tour price includes this national park fee.
Beaches AO NANG BEACH: At 20 km from Krabi Town Ao Nang Beach is the most developed of Krabi’s many beaches. Ao Nang Beach is famous for it’s white sand beaches and large limestones karsts towering over the eastern edges. All of your accommodation, shopping and service needs can be found here. It is the hub from which to plan your trip to sea as well as to any number of the nearby islands. NOPPHARAT THARA BEACH Just around the corner from Ao Nang, yet still undeveloped with only a few resorts, bars and restaurants, Noppharat Thara beach offers a bit more “local” feel than it’s sister Ao Nang. Attractive because of its natural setting, this is where local youngsters and families gather during sunset and on weekends. Savor some local Muslim snacks at the beach stalls, or fill yourself with seafood in the local restaurants at the end of the beach neat the Noppharat Thara National park headquarters. At low tide, walk out together with millions of small crabs on the sandy pathways to a small island on the western edge of the beach. KLONG MUANG BEACH A further 20 km away from Ao Nang Klong Muang is the up-market side of Krabi, the place to be if you are after a peaceful and hassle free holiday. Catering to families and couples, it is here that you really get that well deserved repose, surrounded by pristine nature.

TUBKAEK BEACH Next to Klong Muang Beach, Tub Keak beach is another place to just get away; long, clean and powerful, the area boasts breathtaking views over the Koh Hong archipelago and provides for wonderfully charming sunsets. From Tubkeak beach you can venture inside the National Park and try the nature trail “Naga trek” to one of the most spectacular viewpoints in Krabi. RAILAY AND TONSAI BEACHES Are split and separated from Ao Nang by a limestone mountain range. Railay has two sides, east and west, and its settings are simply marvelous: crystal clear waters, pure sandy beaches, lush mountains and rocky islands emerging from the sea. Both beaches are known all over the world for their famous climbing routes. They can only be reached by boat, a 15 minute ride from Ao Nang or 30 minutes from Krabi Town. Enjoy a cocktail in one of the beach bars, visit the Phranang Cave, challenge yourself on a rock climbing or ‘deep water solo’ cliff jumping into the sea, hike the limestone trail to a lagoon or the viewpoint or simply chill out and watch the day pass you by. KOH LANTA BEACHES Koh Lanta has a wide selection of resorts for all tastes and pockets. Koh Lanta Yai island has long stretches of gleaming white sandy beaches and shallow emerald waters. Lined with tropical vegetation, a private spot is never more than a short walk away.

t’s happened again, another year of self mutilation and destruction much to the amazement of the onlookers‌ well those who take a glance up from their cameras that is. Honouring the nine emperor gods at Chinese temples throughout Southeast Asia on the ninth moon (or ninth month) of every year, the Vegetarian Festival - or Gin Je in Thai has been celebrated throughout southern Thailand for over 100 years. During the festival, devotees typically begin their processions at temples which are close to rivers or oceans, as it is believed that the spirits travel through water easier during their journey to earth. According to Taoist mythology, these nine emperors are the fundamental gods responsible for keeping all functions of earth in order. They are represented in the sky by the Ursa Major constellation, which includes the Big Dipper. Temples dedicated to one or more of the nine emperor gods will act as a traveling point for them to channel through to the devotees, who embody them during the festival processions. During the channeling, the devotees enter into a trancelike state and march through the streets for hours, mutilating themselves or impaling with various objects such as swords, razors, axes or anything else they can find. Their are many different variations of the festival but all are based on the same principles of worshipping and paying homage to the nine emperor gods. In Thailand, the festival is an alteration of its original foundations as each region of Southeast Asia has its own adaptation. As the legend goes, the current ceremony was started in 1825 in Katu, Phuket by a group of Chinese fisherman who fell ill with Yellow Fever. As other medical methods to cure them failed at the time, they sought an alternative. They men embarked on an adventurous journey to try a new method of cleansing their bodies, adhering to a strict vegetarian diet. They also believed that a cleansing of the flesh was necessary, so they harmed themselves physically either through cutting, piercing or other forms of inflicting pain. The festival has since become one of the main festivals of Southern Thailand, spanning over nine days with preparations beginning weeks before.

The festival has become somewhat of a spectacle in Thailand. The most popular procession is paraded through Phuket Old Town and is the largest in the region, but Krabi’s procession has steadily grown annually. Some even say it is the better festival to visit, mainly because few tourists come to spectate, making access to key viewing points relatively easy. It is still an event for the locals, and by the locals with a large production, without the frenzy of crowds in Phuket. Year after year the types of mutilation seem to intensify, appearing to be a competition of who can use the biggest and most intense objects to impale their faces with. Bicycles, wrenches, and gas pump handles are all now regular occurrences. What will be next?

In addition to the already gruesome spectacle is the use of firecrackers, and the dancing throughout the burning explosions (again with no shoes on). Teams of two carried spirit houses on their shoulders, and when firecrackers were ignited, devotees would run towards them, jumping and dancing through them. It’s quite incredible to watch people who look as though they should be feeling such high levels of pain and distress, walking through the streets casually and calmly. It’s a sight to behold.
affairs as we witnessed the parade from start to finish. The first thing we noticed was the lack of shoes. This was a simple, trivial observation, but imagine walking through the streets of a town where temperatures approach 40 degrees Celsius, with no protection from the sun or the hot asphalt. Interestingly, the devotees don’t prepare themselves through the year by developing a pain threshold. Many of the devotees are just ordinary citizens with ordinary lives living in Krabi, some of which we recognized, but with spears going through their cheeks. Devotees hold the belief that the nine emperor gods channel through them and remove all pain inflicted during the event. Judging from the looks on some faces however, there was a clear distinction between those possessed by outside powers and those still grounded. It is a sight to witness those feeling the pain, watching them become delirious during the march and needing to step out. Three men with large items stuck through their cheeks had to be removed from the parade due to their dehydration and medical attention needed. Last year, three men died from loss of blood, but those who perish on a holy day are believed to transcend into a better life through reincarnation. Although men seem to hold down the bulk of the attention the festival is not restricted to them; plenty of women also participated as well. As many as 100 women with small spears through their faces were parading through the streets of Krabi Town, each of them with little to no signs of pain or distress on their faces.

The Vegetarian Festival is a must see for anyone visiting Thailand during the ninth moon October 8-17th. Please beprepared this is not for the faint of heart. …imagine walking through the streets of a town where temperatures approach 40 degrees Celsius, with no protection from the sun or the hot asphalt. If your prepared for an event like no other, than head into Krabitown or keep your eyes open while in Ao Nang, it’s a sight you surly not forget.

ack in 2002 Karin Hulathanom had his first experience with an artisanal bar of handmade soap. He smelled the bar of soap, felt the lather in-between his fingers and was immediately hooked. Karin knew he had to learn how to make soap for himself. Beginning by looking online and devoting books upon books on the subject. He got to work learning how soap was made and how he could use ingredients he had easy access to in Krabi. Soon after his love with the topic of soap making he began toying with the idea of starting a company and being the first commercial soap maker in Krabi. Undertaking a new endeavour is no small feat, no matter what the endeavour. Change is something humans love but most of us are all innately resistant to it. The fear of the unknown (the dark if you will). The fear of failing, the fear of uncertainly has kept most of on the path well trodden. This is whats most hard about taking a plunge like what Karin took, to take your destiny in your hands, sink or swim; and at the end of the day you have nobody to blame or congratulate expect whose looking at you in mirror. Khun Karin made the decision, he would take up his destiny into his own hands, he

would try his luck at the idea of becoming an artisanal soap maker based in Krabi. With dreams of selling his soap internationally and throughout Thailand he had his work cut out for him. Before he could fully commit to this new decision, he needed to get to acknowledgement and hopefully support from his beloved Sandy. So coming home he talked with her about his new idea. At first she was hesitant as starting a soap making business, as it meant changing their whole lives around, to go into the unknown and with no guarantee. It meant they had to completely change their lives. Leaving the relative comfort of the companies they were working for and starting their own business. Over a glass of wine the proposal was made and Sandy agreed to this wild and crazy idea, so they were off. First they needed a name for their product and company, they settled on ‘The Rich Products’. As they both have high standards and expectations for their products they needed a great understand of the process of making soap. How ingredients are used in the process and how they react with one another to create the soap Karin and Sandra wanted. They needed to make sure the soap also reflected the local ingredients

and flavours of Krabi. This required a lot of testing, but before they could start testing, they need to make their factory and area where they would make the soap and test different batches. Luckily they had some extra space in their home, so they converted this extra 40 Sq. Meters space into a small laboratory and factory. After the small factory was constructed they got to work testing the various types of fatty oils, lye and essential oils together to find the perfect ratio to create the type of soap they were after. Testing can take a long time especially if you’re in the process of making a high quality and durable product. So Karin and Sandy testing hundreds of combinations until they found their perfect ratio of ingredients.

Soon after they came up with an ideal product they began marketing their soap to the public, taking out space in local markets, talking with hotels and resorts as well as making an online store. The orders began to come in and they were working around the clock marketing their products while also producing batches to keep up with demand. Karin knew though that they needed certain certifications to make their product more
credible and worthy of the global brand he desired. Karin therefore applied and received the coveted ISO certification in December 2017. At the same time Karin also received the CODEC GMP Certification as

well as the Premium Product certification awarded by the department of traditional and alternative medicine which is a branch under the ministry of public health. Now with their new found government and internationally recognised certifications the Rich Products are off to the races. They are taking in international orders from around the globe, shipping their soap globally yet still have not forgotten about their local roots. The couple has taken a permanent spot at the newly opened Green Market just outside Big C in Krabi town and also frequents various other markets throughout Krabi. Karin and Sandy’s story is one of inspiration, they knew nothing about soap making only that they wanted to try it and make a new life for themselves. his October Krabi will host a grand event, The Krabi Fit Fest, an event which is open to all.
Krabi Fit Fest is a celebration of our bodies and in a variety of classes and events ranging from a classic strong man competition to free flow yoga classes,Thai massage and many more. An event commemorating our bodies and experiencing the joy of feeling alive and well in our own skin. Last year the Krabi strong man competition which drew in a large crowd of participants from all over Thailand as well as internationally. The Krabi Yoga fest which was held last year also attracted the eyes and ears from participants both internationally and domestically. This year the Krabi Fit Fest aims to combine both the Krabi yoga fest and strong man competition into an event celebrating all types of exercise. The event will be held at the Naga Pura Resort & Spa in Ao Nang and will take place over October 5-7. James Bensley began his life back on the shores of the United Kingdom. His father was a mechanic and therefore James from a young age was surrounded by engines, spark plugs, wrenches and the like. His father was also a motorcycle racer and brought his son along for the ride giving him a glimpse into the intensity, the fun and the exhilaration that comes from riding motorcycles. From an early age every day offered a different adventure for James. Dissecting an engine, examining a chair, doing a job on a neighbors house were all common activities for James with his open ended exploration into how the world around is formed and works has given numerous opportunities to learn from an early age how the world works and how it can be tinkered and toyed with. Growing up in an culture unfiltered by instagram or facebook or the internet meant that when you wanted something to do you needed to go outside and do it. There were no shortage of days outdoors in the mud, chasing kids on bikes, running through the forests of Eastern England. ‘Growing up I always remember being finding a deep desire to learn more about the things around me, how they worked, what powered them and most of all how to remake them’ As he grew James enrolled in a carpentry trade school to learn the art of working with wood to build homes, furniture and the likes. He studied and worked throughout his school year. Learning for a week per month on campus, then off to work on site for the other three weeks, and after work he’d get to work in his workshop at home. This was the life James would lead in England for his first 18 years of life. It wasn’t until he decided to jump on a plane sometime later and take a holiday trip to New Zealand that his life would begin to change yet again. Arriving in New Zealand was only the first of many stops which would lead James to Krabi. After leaving New Zealand stops were made at Australia and Hawaii then ending up in Trang (just south of Krabi). Once in Thailand James as many of us do felt the overwhelming feeling of relaxation, the sense of liberation that nobody is judging you, the overwhelming amount of delicious food around every street corner and decided to stay longer. That was 15 years ago. Back in 2005 Thailand, and Krabi in particular was a different place than what it is today. Krabi didn’t have an international airport, only domestic flights from Bangkok would fly passengers. There was only a handful of 7-11’s throughout the province and in

general people didn’t speak English much at all. There was a tourist industry in Krabi but it’s nothing compared to what it is today. First landing in Krabi during this time was like stepping foot on another planet and when he did so, James was hooked. There is something special about arriving in Krabi (or Thailand for that matter) when you are coming for a well organized and structured society. Thailand offers a different pace of life, yes certainly things can take longer to get done, but in the end things

As we all know it takes time to build a home, it takes time to make a beautiful table or piece of furniture so rightly being a carpenter or a furniture maker, Krabi offers a great place for living. Arriving in Krabi James at first didn’t start working as a carpenter, he took a few jobs teaching English for locals. At night though, he got to spend time in his workshop making furniture and personal items for himself in his spare time. As word gets out in a small town the news got out shortly thereafter that James had a workshop and was building furniture for himself. Thats all it took and people began coming to his workshop, asking for him to make tables, chairs, dressers, desks built-in kitchens and much more. This was the tipping point when James decided to open his own company, quit working

for sale, the only problem is that once a piece is set up for sale there it’s sold immediately. So if you visit his workshop and don’t find but a few pieces keep it in mind that those pieces probably will be gone when you arrive next time. f you’re looking for a vacation that mixes adventure with history, Krabi is definitely the place for you. Krabi is a treasure trove of natural history, and the best evidence of this is the Fossil Shell Beach, or Susan Hoi. Because the Fossil Shell Beach is both beautiful and educational, it’s definitely fun for the whole family! Ancient secrets revealed by time Around 40 million years ago, a large, freshwater swamp covered this whole area. Decaying plant and animal matter sunk to the bottom, forming a thick layer of sediment. This sediment would eventually come to form Krabi’s iconic limestone landscape, both above and under the sea. The area of Susan Hoi, located at Ban Laem Pho, is especially wondrous. Long before the dawn of humans, the ancient swamps held other secrets. Krabi’s cliffs and caves hold many mysteries. In addition to their stunning appearance, the limestone reveals ancient relics. Remains of prehistoric animals, humans and human artifacts have all been discovered here. Susan Hoi : The Shell Cemetery Millions of small, invertebrate creatures known as gastropod snails inhabited the waters of old. At Susan Hoi, the muddy swamp bottom preserved the gastropod shells, forming huge fossil clusters that you can view today - hence the name Fossil Shell Beach. “Susan Hoi” literally translates to shell cemetery or seashell graveyard. Resting on the swamp bed, millions of shells formed masses, combining with ancient plant material, clay, spores and pollen. Of the four types of fossils found at Fossil Shell Beach, a snail specimen known as viviparus is the most numerous. This prehistoric snail’s ancestors still inhabit the area today. In fact, you will find many of their living descendants as you explore Krabi’s freshwater areas. Therefore, the viviparus is not used as a factor in dating the fossil shelf. Microscopic relics tell us that shells at Susan Hoi are between 40 and 20 million years ago. The second most common fossils are bivalves, the mollusk family containing clams, mussels and oysters. However, scientists have dated the site using information from the fossils of a much smaller organism - spores. These microscopic relics tell us that the shell cemetery of Susan Hoi is between 40 and 20 million years ago.

Explore the Fossil Shell Beach You can investigate the collection in any of three locations : • Because of its submerged position, visitors can view the first site clearly at maximum low tide. This site, west of the visitors’ center, is home to millions of gastropod fossils around 1-2 centimeters in diameter. • The second site is located at the Susan Hoi visitors’ center. A limestone rock shelf, two meters thick, contains millions of compacted gastropod fossils. Because of its placement, this site is easily eroded by waves. • Susan Hoi’s third fossil site is also accessible only during low tide. Here, the fossil shelves are up to three meters thick, and contain stubby snails as well as long snails and bivalves. Each of the three fossil sites at Susan Hoi are comprised of large chunks of flat rock that the sea has thrust up from its bed. From a distance, they resemble large slabs of concrete, broken and scattered by the shore. Closer inspection will reveal millions of fossils embedded in the
rock. Of course, the cliff overlooking the beach provides a beautiful view as well. On a sunny day you will see the “chicken neck” of nearby Koh Gai easily. Low tide reveals the rock shelves, which can also be viewed from a distance - though you will not see the details. A unique archaeological phenomenon Susan Hoi is one of only three similar sites in the world - the others in the United States and Japan. Of these three, Thailand’s Fossil Shell Beach is the only coastal site. This unique distinction makes it a must see for any and all fossil lovers. Of only three similar sites on the planet, Susan Hoi is the only coastal location. The Fossil Shell Beach visitors’ center hosts a small exhibition with samples. Information is available in Thai and English for those wishing to learn more about the site. Because Susan Hoi is included in the vicinity of Hat Nopparat Thara Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park, you’ll have to pay an entrance fee to access the beach. Foreigners can expect to pay 200 THB (adult) and 100 THB

Treat yourself, but we recommend stopping at the nearby Andamana Beach Resort for a proper meal on your way back. Logistical Details How to get there : Susan Hoi is located in Ban Laem Pho, around 17 km from Krabi Town and 8 km from Ao Nang Beach. You can take a taxi or a tuk tuk, but we think the best way to get there is by songthaew. Songthaews leave Ao Nang Beach regularly, and will get you there for 30 THB. Of course, you can always add to the adventure by renting a motorbike. To get here from Ao
Nang Beach you’ll turn left at the only traffic lights, towards Ao Nammao. A right turn at the roundabout will take you past Ao Nammao Pier, where you’ll follow the road left and continue until you reach your destination. Along the way you’ll pass by the Andamana Beach Resort and Dawn of Happiness, so make sure you save some time for dinner and beach lounging. We recommend renting your bike from Krabi MotoRentals, the best bike rental service in Ao Nang.
Best time to visit :
Susan Hoi is open from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm. Depending on the weather, some will tell you to go earlier or later to avoid the blazing sun. Our best advice is to check the tides. Since the site is best viewed at maximum low tide, it might be a good idea to time your visit in the afternoon when the water level is lowest.
What to bring :
Sunscreen, money (for entrance fee and/or shopping), camera and your curiosity! We also recommend a hat and water, but you can buy those on-site if you forget.

Loving stray dogs, One day at a time Stray dogs or sometimes referred to as Soi dogs have been an ongoing issue throughout Thailand for decades now. They are common throughout the kingdom in rural areas as well as urban centers. Generally Thai people are tolerant of them but many are not. Those not tolerant of these stray dogs have been found the beat, stab, poison, burn and generally just abuse these dogs, sometimes causing irreversible damage. The growing concerns over stray dogs is starting to be discussed by governing bodies but it’s still very much in it’s infancy and we will not see any real government sponsored progress for years to come. This means it’s up to the private sector to supply these dogs with treatment, care and trying to educate the youth on proper behavior towards stray animals. In Koh Lanta one such woman is doing just that, Junie Kovacs. Junie came to Koh Lanta originally to found a cooking school, Time for Lime which she opened due to her love for Thai cuisine and her desire to share this love with others. Soon after opening her doors she began to notice the huge number of stray dogs and cats on Koh Lanta. This being the place she was now to call home and work she knew something must be done about this issue. Knowing that Koh Lanta has nothing in terms of animal care centers, she would have to build it herself. So thats what she did exactly, with the profits from running her Time for Lime cooking school and also a few donations for local businesses she was able to build a proper shelter and offer a place to care for dogs in a safe and comfortable environment. Understanding one of the main issues with this amount of stray dogs on Koh Lanta is simply the lack of sterilization, so one of the important issues was addresses in the planning stages sourcing a reliable vet to perform the surgeries as well as building a dedicated room for the procedures. Since Lanta Animal Welfare opening it’s doors there has been a 90% reduction in stray dogs and cats found throughout Koh Lanta. Focusing intensely on sterilization and after seeing the dramatic effects of it on

Koh Lanta Junie decided to offer this as a mobile clinic in outlying districts of Krabi and beyond. These mobile clinics have been extremely successful sterilizing up to 40 animals in a single day. It all comes down to sterilization, if you reduce the ability for irresponsible dogs and cats to procreate then the number of offspring born into less then suitable homes will reduce, it’s that simple. Sterilization is not always the correct choice for pet owners and this is up to the
owners themselves but when it comes to overpopulating of homeless dogs, this is the only way. Opening their doors in 2007 Lanta Animal Welfare has since become a landmark on Koh Lanta and beyond. Gaining the support for many of the small and large businesses on Koh Lanta and even partnering with such organization such as Soi Dogs on many of their mobile clinics. Sterilization is not all that Lanta Animal Welfare does. Due to the abuse on dogs on Koh lanta Lanta Animal Welfare offers extensive medical care and monitoring for any attack or injury one could imaging. This has meant extra veterinary staff and many volunteers on hand to help change bandages, feed and water animals, and also monitor their improvement. In fact most the whole center is basically run by volunteers, if it were not for the hard working determination of the volunteers from all over the world, Lanta Animal Welfare would not be possible. This is rather impressive as there are over 50 animals being cared for at any one time at Lanta Animal Welfare, all of them require medicine, food and care every day. Lanta Animal Welfare has made some impressive changes over the year for stray dogs and cats on Koh Lanta and beyond, helping not only the animals themselves but also the perception of how a dog or cat should be treated. Now sponsoring a new building project, the kitty city which will be a large outdoor cat enclosure. this new kitty city will be built again totally on donations from local businesses and private donors. The kitty city is designed to help allow more cats to be housed on site at Lanta Animal Welfare while also allowing local schools to come, see, interact with the cats and learn from Junie and her volunteers. Lanta Animal Welfare has been changing lives for over 6 years now but not only for the animals they take in and treat. Getting there
Ferries to Koh Lanta depart from the Krabi Passenger Pier in Krabi Town, close to the center of town. The duration of the ferry is around 2 hours, with the seas typically calm and refreshments available on board. Ferries arrive at Saladan Pier on the northern tip of Koh Lanta Yai, from where it’s possible to take a taxi, songteaw or hire a scooter to your hotel.

oh Jum Island is still the quintessential destination in Krabi province if you are looking for authentic Thai village life and development that is still a small footprint.
Geography brought electricity to Koh Jum late in 2009 as the island was in the direct path of the new underwater electric cable connecting Koh Phi Phi to the mainland. So now that Koh Jum is plugged-in, has it lost its reputable character that has attracted intrepid travelers over the past couple of decades?

We are pleased to report that Koh Jum is still as tranquil and laid back as it always has been. In fact, what is most noticeable are the lack of noisy generators at most of the islands resorts. Folks come to Koh Jum to tune out; the island’s nature and culture dominate the minimal tourist infrastructure. The existing resorts on Koh Jum all have their own family-run character, ranging from the backpackers paradise to luxurious beach villas..... Koh Pu Mountain is the dominant geological feature on the island at over 400 meters. It’s a great hike for the adventurous and a vital refuge of native habitat still harboring Asian Pied Hornbills and Burmese pythons. The three villages; Koh Pu, Ting Rai and Koh Jum are situated on the back side of the island, amongst the mangroves while the resorts are located opposite, facing the open Andaman Sea. This division allows the villagers to remain authentic without a significant tourist infrastructure while the resorts are all located on the beaches. Koh Jum is predominately a large Muslim populated subdistrict of Krabi, home to over 1,500 inhabitants. The locals of these villages engage mostly in fishing, rubber cultivation and the local crafts of cloth weaving and painting or ‘batik’ as it is known as here. While the north is mountainous, the south is comprised of dense jungle, cashew nut trees, rubber plantations, casuarinas and nipa-palms. Since all the resorts face West, there are epic sunsets to be had all along the island. The renowned Koh Jum Lodge is an excellent place to stay for a few days, and has superb views to boot. Access to the island is by longtail taxi boats which leave from the mainland at the port town of Laem Kruat. There is now a songthaew you can take direct from Krabi Town to Laem Kruat. During the high season most visitors come to Koh Jum using the Krabi-Koh Lanta ferry which stops at two locations on Koh Jum, both of which are offshore so local longtail boats will come from the island to pick up passengers. The lack of any deep ports on the island keep the ferry boats out at sea and almost prevent large masses of tourists from overcrowding the island. Getting here is an adventure and this ends up defining the interesting community of resorts and visitors that have made this island their home and the place they return to year after year.

Getting to Koh Jum can be very simple or a bit of a nightmare, it all depends on how much you know about it. This is where Krabi magazine can help, we recently took the trip to Koh Jum ourselves and have decided to share the adventure with all of our readers. There are 2 ways to get to Koh Jum- by passing ferry or longtail boat. There are ferries that leave from Koh Lanta at 8am and from Krabi at 11am, both ferries stop as they pass alongside Koh Jum and signal to longtail boats to come and pick up visitors to land ashore Koh Jum. Koh Phi Phi also has ferries which leave at 2pm and operate on the same principle as above. The second way to get to Koh Jum is to go to the port town of Laem Kruat, from where you can catch a longtail boat directly to Koh Jum- this was our favorite of the 2 methods of travel. If you are driving, it takes about one hour to get from Ao Nang to Laem Kruat. You just head to Tesco Lotus and then continue until you see the large overhead signs which tell you to turn right for “Koh Jam”. This road will lead to the small locality of Laem Kruat, where you will find a large pier with boats going to Koh Jum. If you don’t have transport of your own, you can always catch a blue and yellow “songthaew” - the local buses that have benches in the back. On the side of the “songthaew” will be written – Krabi, Bus Station, Tesco, Big C, Laem Kruat, they are frequent and easy to spot. These buses will leave from all of these locations at intervals throughout the day and will take you directly to the Laem Kruat pier.
WELL WORTH THE EXPERIENCE
Now, the pier is a bit misleading. We waited at the end of the pier before realizing the longtail taxis were passing us by and docking at the mainland. Then we went back and followed our noses along past the shops until we saw a slipway with goods and people being unloaded. It was the second slipway we needed to get to “Moo Too”, the place on Koh Jum we were being collected from. If you know the name of the pier on Koh Jum you need to get to, just ask anyone in this area and they will direct you to the correct boat. We got on and soon were chugging along through the mangroves with a boat full of happy local Muslim women that looked as they hadn’t changed a bit since 1925. We arrived at Koh Jum just 45 minutes later, paid our 70thb fare and were taken by “taxi” (a battered old pickup truck) through the winding dirt track until we reached our destination resort. Give it a go and you will see a different side of Thailand from years gone by.
