On the 18th of January 2018, Novotel Phuket Phokeethra took part in Phuket’s annual Disability Day held at Phuket’s Rajabhat University by distributing various baked good and beverages to disabled children. The event was aimed at encouraging a better understanding amongst the community about how people are affected by their disabilities. We hoped that together we could raise awareness of the importance of the rights and welfare of disabled individuals, as well the integration of these people in the community on all levels including economic, political, social and cultural. It was an incredibly rewarding experience for all involved.

February The hot month! February is one of the best months to visit Thailand, It’s hot yet not too hot, it’s sunny but we still get decent cloud cover, making the beaches not too hot around midday. Chinese new year is happening on February 16th and then of course the prices and availability throughout the region are slightly lower. It’s a great time to come to Thailand as the weather is still top notch, yet the number of tourists visiting are certainly less than January and December. Some tension inside? Crispy Spring Rolls – Poo Pia todd
You can buy the frozen spring roll wrappers in all Asian stores and also in some regular stores these days. This is one of the few things in Thai cuisine that contains some wheat flour. We use the 20 cm square ones. Remove the wrappers from the freezer 15 minutes before preparing. The ones you don’t use, you can freeze again. Keep two damp towels handy. One you put over the spring roll wrappers that you are going to use, and one over the finished spring rolls, so they don’t get dry. *After you’ve rolled them, they will keep for up to 4 days 12
in the refrigerator if kept in an airtight box. You can freeze them also! Give them a quick deep fry, just to give them a slight crust. Then you can defrost and deepfry them again until they become golden brown. Glass noodles have many names: cellophane/vermicelli/ bean thread or crystal noodles. They can be bought dry at your Asian shop and are made from mung bean and potato starch. Usually they have to be soaked in room temperature water for about 15 minutes, drained and then cut a few times with scissors as they are very long. www.krabi-magazine.com
Spring Roll filling 200 g dried glass noodles 10 cloves garlic, killed and finely chopped 4 coriander roots, killed and finely chopped 250 g fresh bean sprouts 12 mushrooms finely sliced (any kind will do but we use shitake) 1 carrot, medium size, julienne sliced 2 tsp black pepper, freshly ground 1/2 dl oyster sauce 1/2 dl soy sauce 1 tbs sesame seed oil 3 tbs sugar 1/2 – 1 dl vegetable stock (or water) 6 spring onions, sliced in 5 cm pieces Spring roll glue 4 tbs wheat flour 1 1/2 tbs water (or just use beaten egg) 1. Soak glass noodles in room temperature water for 15 minutes, then drain. Make a few cuts with scissors. 2. In a large saucepan or wok, fry garlic and coriander root on medium heat until the aromas are released. Be careful not to burn the garlic. 3. Turn up the heat and add all veggies, except the spring onion. Stir-fry until the bean sprouts soften slightly. Add a bit of stock to prevent it becoming too dry. 4. Add noodles, sauces and spices. Stir and blend gently until the vegetables and noodles have soaked up the sauces. 5. Turn off the heat and add the spring onion, mix gently. 6. Place the spring roll wrapper with a corner towards you. Place about 4 tablespoons of the noodle mix in the middle of the wrapper. (We are not making Mexican burritos here; so don’t get greedy with the filling.) Roll it halfway until it looks like a triangle, fold in the sides, keep rolling and finally fasten the end bit of the wrapper with some ‘glue’. The roll should be around 9 cm long. Place it under the damp towel and keep rolling! 7. Heat up the oil for deep-frying. The temperature should be right when it starts to form small bubbles around a tooth pick when you stick it in the oil. Slide gently 4 rolls into the pan, not too many at a time or the oil cools down and your rolls will become oily. Deep-fry until golden brown. 8. Remove from the pan and drain off excess oil. The oil can then be reused another 3 or 4 times. Sweet & Sour Cucumber Salad 1 dl rice vinegar 1 dl refined sugar 1/2 tsp salt 1 cucumber (large) sliced in 4 length wise, then finely sliced 2 large fresh red chilies, sliced in fine rings 5 Thai red onions, or 1 small regular red onion, thinly sliced 1. In a pot, boil rice vinegar, sugar and salt until sugar dissolves. Refrigerate until it cools down. 2. Add all the vegetables to the vinegar dressing 20 minutes before serving, to let the veggies marinate, but not for many hours or they’ll get soggy. Serve with sweet chili sauce and sweet & sour cucumber salad. The cucumber salad not only tastes fantastic but actually works as a digestive too. KOH PODA This is the iconic island of Krabi and the first and most dramatic one you can see from Ao Nang beach. Hop on a longtail boat - the local wooden boats with their picturesque prow and sail away surrounded by turquoise water.
THA POM NATIONAL PARK Thapom is a simple local national park, not the easiest to access, but certainly worth the trip. Just outside Ao Nang, Thapom is a place where salty seawater and freshwater from the mountains mix perfectly creating an observable stratified layer, where both sea fish and freshwater fish live separately but together. Close to Ao Thalane Bay, Thapom is a 30 minute drive from Ao Nang.
CHICKEN ISLAND This should be next on your list as it is right next to Koh Poda. From the right angle when passing Chicken Island (Koh Gai) you can catch a glimpse of a chicken’s neck and head, some would argue more like that of a turkey but it’s up to you. The second island, Koh Tub, is connected to Chicken Island by a sandy isthmus and people can walk from one to another at low tide. KOH HONG This island archipelago demands everyone’s attention as it is one of the highlights of Krabi Province. The Archipelago, a group of limestone islands with many hidden caves and lagoons makes it perfect for snorkeling and exploring. Make sure you visit Lading and Pakbia islands before Koh Hong as they are much less visited and sport a blend of both lush jungle and tropical waters. Koh hong is usually crowded until 3pm so we recommend visiting other Lading and Pakbia in the morning, then going to Koh Hong after the crowds have started to leave. KOH PHI PHI Private bays, limestone cliffs, waters rich in marine life and caves where swallow’s birds nests are harvested are all here on the island that Leonardo Di Caprio once rolled his hot bod in while filming ‘The Beach’ at the now iconic Maya Bay. KOH JUM & KOH SIBOYA Both are unspoiled tropical hide-aways that have a unique atmosphere. Tune in to the slow culture here, imbibe the peace and recharge your batteries with the soundtrack of lapping waves.
KHAO PHANOM BENCHA NATIONAL PARK At 20 km from Krabi Town, the Khao Phanom Bencha national park comprises waterfalls, streams, lush forests and caves. It is home to all kind of flora and wildlife and to the highest mountain in the region from which it takes it’s name. One of the features of the park is Huay Thoi Waterfall where water runs down onto several huge pools. TARNBOK KHORANEE NATIONAL PARK Located in the north of the province, Tarnbok Khoranee national park is made up of limestone mountains, verdant tropical forest, caves and beautiful islands. It is well known kayaking explorers as there are a number of tributaries curving into a number of small caves boasting ancient cave paintings. SA MORAKOT, THE EMERALD POOL Truly a natural wonder of Krabi: a pond of turquoise water with an average temperature of 30-40°C fed by a hot spring in the middle of the jungle in Klong Thom district, 70 kilometers from Ao Nang. HOT SPRINGS Situated in Klong Thom district, These natural hot springs are natures jacuzzis. They melt away tensions, relieve the body and mind with the fresh spring water running over mineral enriched limestone rocks.
KOH LANTA The developing island at the southern end of the province known for its prime sunset views, heaps of activities and glimpses into sea gypsy life. Koh Lanta is also a National Park that comprises many local islands surrounded by coral reefs, such as Koh Ngai, Koh Mook and the remote Koh Rok.

Reminder When visiting many of the national parks in Krabi there is often an entrance fee which you need to pay by cash at the time of entrance. This fee can vary but it is always between 90thb - 400thb per person. If you do book a tour through a local operator, please make sure to check with them prior to departing as to whether or not the tour price includes this national park fee.
Beaches AO NANG BEACH: At 20 km from Krabi Town Ao Nang Beach is the most developed of Krabi’s many beaches. Ao Nang Beach is famous for it’s white sand beaches and large limestones karsts towering over the eastern edges. All of your accommodation, shopping and service needs can be found here. It is the hub from which to plan your trip to sea as well as to any number of the nearby islands. NOPPHARAT THARA BEACH Just around the corner from Ao Nang, yet still undeveloped with only a few resorts, bars and restaurants, Noppharat Thara beach offers a bit more “local” feel than it’s sister Ao Nang. Attractive because of its natural setting, this is where local youngsters and families gather during sunset and on weekends. Savor some local Muslim snacks at the beach stalls, or fill yourself with seafood in the local restaurants at the end of the beach neat the Noppharat Thara National park headquarters. At low tide, walk out together with millions of small crabs on the sandy pathways to a small island on the western edge of the beach. KLONG MUANG BEACH A further 20 km away from Ao Nang Klong Muang is the up-market side of Krabi, the place to be if you are after a peaceful and hassle free holiday. Catering to families and couples, it is here that you really get that well deserved repose, surrounded by pristine nature.

TUBKAEK BEACH Next to Klong Muang Beach, Tub Keak beach is another place to just get away; long, clean and powerful, the area boasts breathtaking views over the Koh Hong archipelago and provides for wonderfully charming sunsets. From Tubkeak beach you can venture inside the National Park and try the nature trail “Naga trek” to one of the most spectacular viewpoints in Krabi. RAILAY AND TONSAI BEACHES Are split and separated from Ao Nang by a limestone mountain range. Railay has two sides, east and west, and its settings are simply marvelous: crystal clear waters, pure sandy beaches, lush mountains and rocky islands emerging from the sea. Both beaches are known all over the world for their famous climbing routes. They can only be reached by boat, a 15 minute ride from Ao Nang or 30 minutes from Krabi Town. Enjoy a cocktail in one of the beach bars, visit the Phranang Cave, challenge yourself on a rock climbing or ‘deep water solo’ cliff jumping into the sea, hike the limestone trail to a lagoon or the viewpoint or simply chill out and watch the day pass you by. KOH LANTA BEACHES Koh Lanta has a wide selection of resorts for all tastes and pockets. Koh Lanta Yai island has long stretches of gleaming white sandy beaches and shallow emerald waters. Lined with tropical vegetation, a private spot is never more than a short walk away.

There’s this incredible force within the heart of man that wields itself within every human being. Causing us to behave in ways unimaginable. A force so strong that we would die for. Die for others and even die ourselves; that force is love.

hen preparing to write this feature concerning love I sat in reflection of the many experiences of love that I have had in my lifetime. Love for parents and siblings, loving friends, my first love as a teen, love of my spouse and the love towards my children. Even the love that I feel towards my one and only pet, my dog “Prince Sampson”. As I dwelt on these relationships the edges of my lips perked upwards as I smiled about the immense pleasure that I’ve had in experiencing love towards these lives. As I remained in thought I too began to reflect on the pain that I have felt in loving as well. Things like failed relationships, conflicts in communication, times when it felt as if we were two individuals who suddenly had nothing in common and we were no longer on the same page in life. The pain of my parents passing and the overwhelming sense of helplessness when the love that I felt towards individuals did not seem to be reciprocated. As a Life Coach and Health Minister I’ve been able to help others navigate through some of the most unbearable experiences in their lives. Not only through my training but my own personal identification with the individuals whom have entrusted themselves to expose their brokenness and immense personal pain with me. As the saying goes, “Love is blind”. So are the emotions that surround love and how both euphoria and craze can be experienced from this incredible force. When most talk about love and when we see it displayed in the movies, books and even heard in love songs. A distinctive picture is painted of one heart melding with another. One who will be willing to go to the ends of the earth to see the other happy and well served. We see two people who are intentional about their pursuit towards a never ending story; happily ever after. Yes, in

love we should and will experience most if not all of these feelings and experiences. However, there is a stark reality of another picture that is often times overlooked or surely not disclosed. This is the crazed side of love. A time and place where one love may be distracted in his or her own personal journey and the other may feel overlooked or unloved. Or when one was looking for love and not emotionally or communicatively mature enough to share where they are in their personal love process. Unable to actually reciprocate the great responsibility that love brings into the relationship. The great damage that can be done if love is not only taken but given as well. When we watch movies we rarely
see a picture painted of love. Where individuals are shown how to love, be loved, be hurt, be reconciled or ‘in love’ conclude that they both mutually agree to bless one another to find love elsewhere. Too, where these two parties can now have the freedom to find love and be loved by another. It’s not until oneself falls in love that they realize that love is as complex as understanding how your eyeball functions. Too, the act of love is a tremendous one and with it we must be responsible in the most serious of ways at how we use it. Most would agree that love does make the world go round. Yet for those who have experienced love and have lost it. These dear souls may feel as if their world is literally coming to an end and
for some it does. The emotional affects that loss of love has on an individual as staggering. Equally staggering are the affects that the loss of love can have physiologically as well. It is not short of a pun when you hear of people suffering from a broken heart and there is evidence to back it up. Below are just a few of the more common effects revealed when one is suffering from a broken heart. • Depression: This mental state induces lack of energy, fatigue, exhaustion, anxiety, muscle contractions, sleeping too much, night terrors, not enough sleep and lethargy, irrational thoughts, social withdraw • Digestive Dysfunction: reduction of appetite, binging, nausea, indigestion, increase or decrease in weight • Body interruptions: Chest or heart pain, shortness of breath, headaches, dizziness • Weakened immune system: When the immune system is weakened the lovelorn are susceptible to an increase in the risk of sickness Even though we can see clearly the negative impact that the broken heart syndrome has on many; there’s still hope. The beauty of love is that it fills one with hope. Hope is on our side and it stands partnered with the greatest cure-all for a broken heart and that is time. Nestled just outside Krabitown center is one of the must see highlights of Krabi province. Construction began over a decade ago (and for some areas of the temple grounds is still ongoing). Getting it’s name from tigers which once lived in the forests around the temple grounds numerous statues of these majestic beasts can be seen throughout the temple area. The temple was built by donations from locals, tourists and some government aid and is now open to the public for worship, prayer and take in the brilliance of this awesome structure. The temple is set on a large open area with a main walkway taking you through some shops where you can buy trinkets made by the monks and locals. Necklaces with famous monks sitting in a lotus pose, or a small tapestry outlining some of the figures who made this temple what it is today, or even some more exotic items are for sale in these sidewalk shops. Walking down the main strip you will be followed by a variety of dogs, orange ones, black ones, white ones and even red ones, but don’t worry, they live at the temple and will not bother you. The Monks feed these homeless dogs offering them a safe heaven to live and thrive in, it is one of the many good deeds these temples offer the community. After entering the temple area you will notice a staircase leading off to your left with a sign next to the first step, 1,237 steps to the top! Can you make it? For those that brave the many steps there is a reward unlike any other. -Quote STAND OUT At the top of the temple you will be greeted by a massive 15 meter buddha statue again poised in the traditional lotus pose overlooking the town below. Dazing up at this amazing gold leaf plated statue ones begins to wonder how truly amazing it is that people could make this all happen without the assistance of the heavy machinery. Believe it or not most of the concrete used to build the statue and

temple was brought up to the top of the temple by devoted monks and builders.

The steps going up to the top vary in size, both width and height so tired lightly the trek can be easy one second and have your knees aching the next. That being said all your pain and troubles will wash away once you take in the breathtaking views from the top.
The Tiger Cave Temple is located about 15 minutes from Krabitown center, off of Phetkasem road towards the airport. Once you reach the traffic lights just before the Big C department store turn left and follow this road for another 3 kilometers until you see a sign on your left for Tiger Cave Temple. Or just look up to the mountain tops for the golden buddha and drive towards it!
Start your climb at 4:30pm to catch the sun dropping behind a wall of limestone cliffs or being your climb at 5am to see it climb it’s way out from behind them. It’s up to you but we don’t recommend you trying this feat at midday, the sun in Thailand is well, strong! And during the heavy daylight hours of the day can be downright exhausting. At a normal pace you can usually read the top in 1 hour so plan accordingly.
Good luck and don’t forget to charge your camera batteries. Open to the public all hours of the day.

Thai people are in general an extremely artistic people, this attention to detail and expression can be seen in many facets of their culture. From the homes and architecture they build to the food they cook, there is a distinct individual style which embodies Thailand. This style can be seen in many other areas of Thailand culture but we want to talk for a minute about jewelry and simple the varied styles and pieces you can expect to find throughout the Kingdom. Thai people have an extreme reverence for their country, it’s history and its monarchy. In almost every businesses and home your enter you can find somewhere a poster or a picture of the current or past king and speaking ill about anyone in the royal family is against the law. It’s a place which has survived many conflicts and resisted European colonization in the early 19th and 20th centuries. It’s a place and a home to people who are extremely proud of what they have, what they have built and where they have come from. Their jewelry reflects this in many ways. When you see taxi drivers, government workers, businessmen you might notice a rather shiny gold ring on their finders or possibly a bracelet or necklace, take a second look next time you do. You’ll notice something different about the gold here, it’s brilliant! When Thai people talk about gold they are typically talking about pure 23-24 karat gold as opposed to Western standards of usually jewelry in 14 or 18 karat gold. The color is different, the mailability is different, the feeling is different, it’s unique to Thailand and it’s just one of the many things which Thai people are proud to show. Although Thailand is not home to world glass gemstone or gold mines, it is home to thousands of extremely talented craftspeople who can create immaculate pieces of jewelry. The small animal sanctuary has made ripples in the tourism sector for their egalitarian nature as the work done day in and day out to make the lives of stray dogs and cats better has made them an example for others both local and abroad.

Just over 15 years ago owner and founder Junie Kovacs founded a Thai cooking school to share with tourists her love for Thai cuisine on the not so small island of Koh Lanta, to the south of Krabitown and Krabi airport. Her cooking school offered her a great introduction to working and living in Thailand while also sharing the joy and love of cooking with others, it was a change for her life, a change for her mind and her perspective on how to live. The change was well met for her as she came directly from Norway and the high paced and tiring lifestyle in the Western world. Instead she began living in her kitchen looking out to the beach every day, enjoying stunning sunsets over the horizon and sharing with guests the joys and complexities of Thai cuisine. this change in her lifestyle ushered it many new chapters, some of them difficult and others wonderful, like the many storms which literally destroyed her kitchen and working area. No matter the challenge though, she always bounced back and quickly found solutions. in 2004 when Junie’s cooking school ‘Time for Lime” was founded there was little in terms of tourism on Koh Lanta. The island enjoyed only a short 3-4 month ‘high season’ and for the rest of the year the islands drifted into a soft slumber, preparing for the next season when waves of European, American and Australian visitors would come back to the island. During this down time in between seasons Junie began to notice something that bothered her. There was a large population of stray dogs and cats found on the side of roads throughout the island. They were everywhere and their numbers continued to grow year after year. The primary reason for their growth in number of stray dogs and cats was due to a lack of education on the part of the owners to spay and neuter their animals when they had the chance. Often a pet dog or cat would be roaming free and get pregnant then the owners didn’t, or couldn’t take care of the offspring so they would be set them loose to fend for themselves and therefore grow the stray population. Junie recognised this issue and immediately decided to take action. Now that Koh Lanta is a relatively small island and the stray dogs and cats issue was in all of the hotels best interest to address the issue before it got out of hand. for Junie to find local support to start a shelter and clinic was met with positive reactions

among the local hotels and tourist outfits in the area. Her own cooking school decided to divert 100% of it’s profits to fund the new shelter called ‘Lanta Animal Welfare’. It took over 3 years to raise enough money to get the shelter started but as soon as it was built there was a surge in activity, both in terms of people who wanted to visit and volunteer at the shelter and international support for what Junie and her team were doing to improve the lives of the local animals. Offering people a place they could bring their dogs and cats on there island in order to spay or neuter them was a service which was much needed, but it wasn’t utilised enough. So Lanta Animal Welfare’s team began going out and catching stray dogs on the beach, bringing them back to the clinic where their would be neutered and offered a place for recovery and then sent back out into the wild. this practice worked wonders and now you will be hard pressed to find a stray dog or cat on the island. Soon after Lanta Animal Welfare opened, the incidents of harm and mistreatment towards stray animals was an issue where there was simply no place to bring hurt or injured animals. Lanta Animal Welfare filled this gap as well and opened it’s doors to treating and healing these unfortunate animals. After their recovery these dogs and cats were put up for adoption giving people living abroad (or locally) the chance to take in a homeless animals and give it a second chance at a new life. The program has been growing and growing over the years, now there is a volunteer staff of over 15 people and a permanent staff of 5. There are numerous trips and events Lanta Animal Welfare goes out on, rounding up stray dogs and cats and sterilising them in a hope to cull future homeless generations. Just last year a mobile clinic was setup in Ao Nang and over 200 animals were sterilised over only 4 days. It’s a testament to the team at Lanta Animal Welfare, their dedication to what they do and how they do it. To date Lanta Animal Welfare is responsible for sterilising over 15,000 stray animals.
With it’s recent expansion Lanta Animal Welfare is now hoe to a brand new facility for it’s feline population, aptly named ‘Kitty City’. With the new Kitty City there is a safe and comfortable place for up to 50 cats to rest, lounge and be in a safe place, while they all wait their turn to be adopted. The facility also offers a new cafe and gift shop where guests can buy all kinds of goods directly supporting the work that goes on at Lanta Animal Welfare. The new Kitty City also offers the opportunity for school groups to visit the facility to see first hand about what goes on at Lanta Animal Welfare. This is Junie’s hope to decamp these school outings on a more regular basis.

This program along with almost all of the other programs Lanta Animal Welfare has arranged has been a major success and continues to help the island and its inhabitants.

Krabi got it’s first 20 members in 2015 leading to the formation of the chapter in Krabi and putting Krabi on the map for SKAL members all around thew world.

members of SKAL come from a diverse background, the organisation is represented by over 15,000 members stationed at over 400 clubs in more than 80 nations. It’s one of the more comprehensive organisations of it’s kind, offering people who move throughout the globe a place where they can come meet with other members and get up to speed on local activities and things to do in the region as well as general networking with other travel professionals. A little about the history of this influential organisation SKAL Shortly after the inauguration of the first joint Swedish and French air service between Stockholm and Paris in 1932, a group of travellers from the French capital were invited to make an exploratory flight over the new route. The welcome they received in Stockholm led to many lasting friendships. Realizing the importance of closer relationships, those who made the flight to Stockholm were determined to find a permanent organization whose primary aim would be the creation of goodwill and friendship in travel and transportation circles throughout the world. The “Association Internationale des Skal Clubs (AICS)” was created on 28th April 1934 in the Hotel Scribe and Florimont Volckaert became its founder President who is considered the “Father of Skal”. Skal International is governed by an Executive Committee of six members elected by delegates to an annual General Assembly held during the Skal World Congress hosted by a different country each year so that members are allowed to see for themselves the travel and tourism potential all around the world. Tourism came late to Thailand around the 60’s when national and international representatives from the hospitality industry joined to form the first of Thailand’s Skal clubs in Bangkok. This rapidly attracted more members and their interest has been extended to cities such as Pattaya, Phuket and Chiang Mai. The movement started to gain more and more fame and has now spread further to Phuket, Samui, Hua Hin. The Krabi branch of Skal International has been in place for more than one month now and has attracted so far about 30 members ranging from resort and hotels managers, luxury villas and restaurants owners. In order for the members to stay in touch, a regular monthly dinner will be held in local hotels or restaurants owned or managed by the members. This is the best way to discuss the travel and tourism industries, network and engage in community activities. The organization has also a philanthropic purpose for members who find themselves in trouble to help and advise them. The Florimond Volckaert Fund was created for such urgent situations. Members in the past have been helped because of emergencies of any sort and each of the 15,000 members has a small part of his annual subscription set aside to contribute. Ao Nang just came off it’s first ever strongman competition last month, drawing in participants from all around the world to compete at the Naga Pura Resort & Spa, it was a big event for all and huge success. In it’s quiet a peaceful bay area Ao Nang is a place reserved primarily for families traveling looking to get away form the hustle and bustle of the larger destinations of Thailand. The small beach town grew in popularity over the past 20 years to take it’s place on the international stage of world class destinations throughout the region. Through this evolution Krabi has begun to offer more and more amenities, activities and events for it’s locals and tourists alike. Arabic, French and German restaurants, nightlife bars and pubs playing great live music, festivals such as the Naga festival or various Motorbike cycle bike week events. Now that Ao Nang just recently received it’s first world class gym it’s only fitting that we have an event for the many gym rats to compete in.
So to enter the age of the ironman! Physical competitions testing man’s ability push their limits both physically and mentally have been around since the dawn of man and civilization, they now provide an arena and platform for competitions to earn a living and do what they love for a living, with prizes sometimes entering into the hundreds of thousands of dollars for a single event. Krabi is proud to join the league of cities hosting strongman competitions, now a new breed of traveler can look to Krabi with ease as a a place to train and keep themselves in physical top notch shape while still enjoying all the fruits and adventures Krabi has to offer. The Strongman competition hosted at Naga Pura Resort & Spa was organised by Heroic Fitness’s personal trainer Charles Berg as well as local competitor Peter Richardson. Main sponsors for the event Bear Gear came from Pattaya and offered most of the prizes and winnings for the participants. The tournament as organized was a test of both anaerobic fitness as well a aerobic fitness meaning it’s not only lifting weights up and down, but also moving with them or just flat out running/swimming. Using the tools and equipment the pair Charles and Peter arranged 6 events starting with the farmers walk, the atlas stone, tire flip, shoulder press, deadlift and finally the truck pull. Competitors traveled from all over the globe to come for the historic event representing: South Africa, Sweden, Germany, Norway, England, Russia and Thailand. The event took place over the course of 1 whole day pushing these competitors bodies to the limit with a combination of both static lifting and running/swimming, after the champions were crowned all of the competitors got to enjoy one another at a hearty BBQ at the end of the event marking the historic completion of Ao Nang’s first strongman competition.

But the event was not only about lifting things and moving them, it was an opportunity for the fitness community to grow in Ao Nang, for locals to come out and get involved in the event in a no pressure atmosphere, it was a platform to inspire others to get involved and start working out. In addition to inspiring others to get involved it was also an opportunity for guest and participants to hear from one of Krabi’s leading charities, Lanta Animal Welfare, who had a booth at the event and was able to talk about what they do to help and better the lives of stray dogs and cats in Koh Lanta. These kind of strongman events are common in areas such as Bangkok, Chiang May, Pattaya and even Phuket but Krabi is now among the destinations which competitors can now keep their sights on for future events. KOH JUM
oh Jum Island is still the quintessential destination in Krabi province if you are looking for authentic Thai village life and development that is still a small footprint.
Geography brought electricity to Koh Jum late in 2009 as the island was in the direct path of the new underwater electric cable connecting Koh Phi Phi to the mainland. So now that Koh Jum is plugged-in, has it lost its reputable character that has attracted intrepid travelers over the past couple of decades? We are pleased to report that Koh Jum is still as tranquil and laid back as it always has been. In fact, what is most noticeable are the lack of noisy generators at most of the islands resorts. Folks come to Koh Jum to tune out; the island’s nature and culture dominate the minimal tourist infrastructure. The existing resorts on Koh Jum all have their own family-run character, ranging from the backpackers paradise to luxurious beach villas..... Koh Pu Mountain is the dominant geological feature on the island at over 400 meters. It’s a great hike for the adventurous and a vital refuge of native habitat still harboring Asian Pied Hornbills and Burmese pythons. The three villages; Koh Pu, Ting Rai and Koh Jum are situated on the back side of the island, amongst the mangroves while the resorts are located opposite, facing the open Andaman Sea. This division allows the villagers to remain authentic without a significant tourist infrastructure while the resorts are all located on the beaches. Koh Jum is predominately a large Muslim populated subdistrict of Krabi, home to over 1,500 inhabitants. The locals of these villages engage mostly in fishing, rubber cultivation and the local crafts of cloth weaving and painting or ‘batik’ as it is known as here. While the north is mountainous, the south is comprised of dense jungle, cashew nut trees, rubber plantations, casuarinas and nipa-palms. Since all the resorts face West, there are epic sunsets to be had all along the island. The renowned Koh Jum Lodge is an excellent place to stay for a few days, and has superb views to boot. Access to the island is by longtail taxi boats which leave from the mainland at the port town of Laem Kruat. There is now a songthaew you can take direct from Krabi Town to Laem Kruat. During the high season most visitors come to Koh Jum using the Krabi-Koh Lanta ferry which stops at two locations on Koh Jum, both of which are offshore so local longtail boats will come from the island to pick up passengers. The lack of any deep ports on the island keep the ferry boats out at sea and almost prevent large masses of tourists from overcrowding the island. Getting here is an adventure and this ends up defining the interesting community of resorts and visitors that have made this island their home and the place they

return to year after year. Getting to Koh Jum can be very simple or a bit of a nightmare, it all depends on how much you know about it. This is where Krabi magazine can help, we recently took the trip to Koh Jum ourselves and have decided to share the adventure with all of our readers. There are 2 ways to get to Koh Jum- by passing ferry or longtail boat. There are ferries that leave from Koh Lanta at 8am and from Krabi at 11am, both ferries stop as they pass alongside Koh Jum and signal to longtail boats to come and pick up visitors to land ashore Koh Jum. Koh Phi Phi also has ferries which leave at 2pm and operate on the same principle as above. The second way to get to Koh Jum is to go to the port town of Laem Kruat, from where you can catch a longtail boat directly to Koh Jum- this was our favorite of the 2 methods of travel. If you are driving, it takes about one hour to get from Ao Nang to Laem Kruat. You just head to Tesco Lotus and then continue until you see the large overhead signs which tell you to turn right for “Koh Jam”. This road will lead to the small locality of Laem Kruat, where you will find a large pier with boats going to Koh Jum. If you don’t have transport of your own, you can always catch a blue and yellow “songthaew” - the local buses that have benches in the back. On the side of the “songthaew” will be written – Krabi, Bus Station, Tesco, Big C, Laem Kruat, they are frequent and easy to spot. These buses will leave from all of these locations at intervals throughout the day and will take you directly to the Laem Kruat pier.
WELL WORTH THE EXPERIENCE
Now, the pier is a bit misleading. We waited at the end of the pier before realizing the longtail taxis were passing us by and docking at the mainland. Then we went back and followed our noses along past the shops until we saw a slipway with goods and people being unloaded. It was the second slipway we needed to get to “Moo Too”, the place on Koh Jum we were being collected from. If you know the name of the pier on Koh Jum you need to get to, just ask anyone in this area and they will direct you to the correct boat. We got on and soon were chugging along through the mangroves with a boat full of happy local Muslim women that looked as they hadn’t changed a bit since 1925. We arrived at Koh Jum just 45 minutes later, paid our 70thb fare and were taken by “taxi” (a battered old pickup truck) through the winding dirt track until we reached our destination resort. Give it a go and you will see a different side of Thailand from years gone by.
