Celebrating the end of a Wonderful Year

Layana Resort and Spa hosted the most anticipated and joyful New Year’s Eve Gala celebrations on the night of Sunday 31st December 2017. The 120 distinguished guests fully embraced the “James Bond” theme for the evening, and enjoyed a sumptuous array of local and international food prepared by Layana’s chefs, set up on the resort’s famous lawns This exceptional event was opened by saxophonist and producer Kai Matthiesen, famous for his Coco Jamboo Project, and guests later enjoyed a dancing show by the Sutthani Dance Center, with “007” hits including The Name is Bond, Diamonds are Forever, Skyfall and Die Another Day. At midnight, to welcome in the New Year, the skies above were brilliantly lit up by the biggest, dazzling, display of fireworks drawing gasps of wonder from all. As the sparkles faded, guests were entertained by the music of well-known and well-loved DJ’s Khun A and Khun OB from the Zuk Bar at Bangkok’s Sukhothai Hotel, and dancing continued into the early hours of 2018. During the course of the evening it was announced that General Manager Stefan Heintze would be departing the tropical island shores in January for new pastures as GM at the flagship property of MBK Hotel & Tourism in Bangkok, the Pathumwan Princess Hotel. He will be ably replaced by Ansgar Schlemmer from Germany, who, like Stefan, has a wealth of experience in the hotel and leisure industry. At this auspicious time of the year, we wish both a happy and fulfilling future in their challenging new roles.

Thai cuisine of the month

Traditional Crab Curry

1 pound crab meat 2 to 8 chili peppers (such as serrano or Thai, chopped) 1 piece ginger (2 inches, grated, or galangal) 6 cloves garlic (chopped) 5 shallots (chopped) 1 tablespoon coriander (ground) 2 tablespoons zest (lime) 1 stalk lemongrass (white parts only, chopped fine) 1 teaspoon salt (or to taste) Optional: 1 teaspoon shrimp paste 2 cups coconut milk (not cream of coconut) Optional: 2 tablespoons fish sauce 1 teaspoon sugar

Optional:

3 to 4 lemon or lime leaves 1/2 teaspoon black pepper (or to taste) Garnish: 2 tablespoons cilantro (chopped)

12

1.

Steps:

Ingredients:

2.

Add the child peppers, ginger or galangal, garlic, shallots, ground coriander, lime zest, lemongrass, salt, and optional shrimp paste and pound it into a paste with a mortar and pestle—you also can buzz it into oblivion in a food processor, but it will not be quite the same.

In a large pot or wok, simmer the coconut milk for 5 to 6 minutes. Add the mixture from the mortar and stir it into the coconut milk, stirring constantly for 2 to 3 minutes. Do not let the mixture boil hard, but a simmer is OK.

4.

3.

Add the crab, optional fish sauce, sugar, and optional lemon or lime leaves and let cook for about 5 minutes, until the leaves begin to give off their aroma and the crab is warmed through.

Add the black pepper. Serve over white rice and top with the chopped cilantro. www.krabi-magazine.com

Window on Krabi

Parks THA POM NATIONAL PARK Thapom is a simple local national park, not the easiest to access, but certainly worth the trip. Just outside Ao Nang, Thapom is a place where salty seawater and freshwater from the mountains mix perfectly creating an observable stratified layer, where both sea fish and freshwater fish live separately but together. Close to Ao Thalane Bay, Thapom is a 30 minute drive from Ao Nang.

Islands

KOH PODA This is the iconic island of Krabi and the first and most dramatic one you can see from Ao Nang beach. Hop on a longtail boat - the local wooden boats with their picturesque prow and sail away surrounded by turquoise water.

CHICKEN ISLAND This should be next on your list as it is right next to Koh Poda. From the right angle when passing Chicken Island (Koh Gai) you can catch a glimpse of a chicken’s neck and head, some would argue more like that of a turkey but it’s up to you. The second island, Koh Tub, is connected to Chicken Island by a sandy isthmus and people can walk from one to another at low tide. KOH HONG This island archipelago demands everyone’s attention as it is one of the highlights of Krabi Province. The Archipelago, a group of limestone islands with many hidden caves and lagoons makes it perfect for snorkeling and exploring. Make sure you visit Lading and Pakbia islands before Koh Hong as they are much less visited and sport a blend of both lush jungle and tropical

14

waters. Koh hong is usually crowded until 3pm so we recommend visiting other Lading and Pakbia in the morning, then going to Koh Hong after the crowds have started to leave. KOH PHI PHI Private bays, limestone cliffs, waters rich in marine life and caves where swallow’s birds nests are harvested are all here on the island that Leonardo Di Caprio once rolled his hot bod in while filming ‘The Beach’ at the now iconic Maya Bay. KOH JUM & KOH SIBOYA Both are unspoiled tropical hide-aways that have a unique atmosphere. Tune in to the slow culture here, imbibe the peace and recharge your batteries with the soundtrack of lapping waves. KOH LANTA The developing island at the southern end of the province known for its prime sunset views, heaps of activities and glimpses into sea gypsy life. Koh Lanta is also a National Park that comprises many local islands surrounded by coral reefs, such as Koh Ngai, Koh Mook and the remote Koh Rok.

KHAO PHANOM BENCHA NATIONAL PARK At 20 km from Krabi Town, the Khao Phanom Bencha national park comprises waterfalls, streams, lush forests and caves. It is home to all kind of flora and wildlife and to the highest mountain in the region from which it takes it’s name. One of the features of the park is Huay Thoi Waterfall where water runs down onto several huge pools. TARNBOK KHORANEE NATIONAL PARK Located in the north of the province, Tarnbok Khoranee national park is made up of limestone mountains, verdant tropical forest, caves and beautiful islands. It is well known kayaking explorers as there are a number of tributaries curving into a number of small caves boasting ancient cave paintings. SA MORAKOT, THE EMERALD POOL Truly a natural wonder of Krabi: a pond of turquoise water with an average temperature of 30-40°C fed by a hot spring in the middle of the jungle in Klong Thom district, 70 kilometers from Ao Nang. HOT SPRINGS Situated in Klong Thom district, These natural hot springs are natures jacuzzis. They melt away tensions, relieve the body and mind with the fresh spring water running over mineral enriched limestone rocks.

www.krabi-magazine.com

Beaches AO NANG BEACH: At 20 km from Krabi Town Ao Nang Beach is the most developed of Krabi’s many beaches. Ao Nang Beach is famous for it’s white sand beaches and large limestones karsts towering over the eastern edges. All of your accommodation, shopping and service needs can be found here. It is the hub from which to plan your trip to sea as well as to any number of the nearby islands.

TUBKAEK BEACH Next to Klong Muang Beach, Tub Keak beach is another place to just get away; long, clean and powerful, the area boasts breathtaking views over the Koh Hong archipelago and provides for wonderfully charming sunsets. From Tubkeak beach you can venture inside the National Park and try the nature trail “Naga trek” to one of the most spectacular viewpoints in Krabi.

NOPPHARAT THARA BEACH Just around the corner from Ao Nang, yet still undeveloped with only a few resorts, bars and restaurants, Noppharat Thara beach offers a bit more “local” feel than it’s sister Ao Nang. Attractive because of its natural setting, this is where local youngsters and families gather during sunset and on weekends. Savor some local Muslim snacks at the beach stalls, or fill yourself with seafood in the local restaurants at the end of the beach neat the Noppharat Thara National park headquarters. At low tide, walk out together with millions of small crabs on the sandy pathways to a small island on the western edge of the beach.

RAILAY AND TONSAI BEACHES Are split and separated from Ao Nang by a limestone mountain range. Railay has two sides, east and west, and its settings are simply marvelous: crystal clear waters, pure sandy beaches, lush mountains and rocky islands emerging from the sea. Both beaches are known all over the world for their famous climbing routes. They can only be reached by boat, a 15 minute ride from Ao Nang or 30 minutes from Krabi Town. Enjoy a cocktail in one of the beach bars, visit the Phranang Cave, challenge yourself on a rock climbing or ‘deep water solo’ cliff jumping into the sea, hike the limestone trail to a lagoon or the viewpoint or simply chill out and watch the day pass you by.

KLONG MUANG BEACH A further 20 km away from Ao Nang Klong Muang is the up-market side of Krabi, the place to be if you are after a peaceful and hassle free holiday. Catering to families and couples, it is here that you really get that well deserved repose, surrounded by pristine nature.

December I 2017 January I 2018

KOH LANTA BEACHES Koh Lanta has a wide selection of resorts for all tastes and pockets. Koh Lanta Yai island has long stretches of gleaming white sandy beaches and shallow emerald waters. Lined with tropical vegetation, a private spot is never more than a short walk away.

Reminder When visiting many of the national parks in krabi there is often an entrance fee which you need to pay by cash at the time of entrance. If you do book a tour through a local operator, please make sure to check with them prior to departing as to whether or not the tour price includes this national park fee.

TRAIN THE BRAIN It’s never too late to start again… By. Zina Docto

www.krabi-magazine.com

Here we are again at the beginning of yet another year. Without even having to mention it or hear it, there’s an internal alarm clock that goes off in each and every one of us. The alarm is loud and for many very very annoying. This alarm is the alarm for “change”. We begin to wrestle with self-examination. Did we meet our personal goals, lose the weight that we keep saying we need to shed, deal with that one relational issue that we absolutely know has got to be resolved for a better relationship? Did we start working on the new business idea we’ve had for what seems to be forever, book that dream vacation, and pay down our credit cards? Let’s be serious here, we know the list goes on and on. Let’s just shut that alarm clock off for a moment and take a look at why we might have been in such a pickle all year long and why it may appear that so many others have met their marks last year and why you have not. When we look at the world we must realize that there are a lot of people on it. Many of those If you’re looking at the New Year holding your breath and feeling defeated before you’ve even begun, let me give you some words of encouragement. There are some factors that might be against you and you’ve never even realized it. In today’s day and age we have more resources and directives than at any other time in history. People have found themselves looking to technology to assist them in making changes in their life. Many people have found themselves stuck in the “Horse and Carrot” syndrome. They go to the internet and begin to research on how to make specific personal or professional change. Maybe they will need a coach, a counselor, a doctor, maybe a self-help book, maybe this or maybe that. They find the direction needed to get them up and over that personal obstacle. The excitement motivates more study more searching, when suddenly the euphoria drops and absolutely nothing happens; absolutely nothing. Having an overload of information suddenly drained their people are making the changes necessary for them to be fulfilled in their personal life journey. While on the other hand many are not; plain and simple. If you were to put 20 people in one room and place them under the proverbial “New Year’s Resolution” microscope you will find that some of them were successful at their resolve and some were not. Don’t be so hard on yourself if you are on the ‘not’ side of resolve. People are individuals and they are all on their own personal roads of self-discovery, maturity, self-discipline, vision, ambition and checking off their bucket lists. For us to compare ourselves one to another is something that we must be mindful to not place too much weight on. Much of our personal growth comes by personal revelation and motivation. People are inspired, motivated and equipped for personal success in different ways and at different times. There is not a magical barometer that gadgets when this happens for each individual. And every man’s personal success or failure, if you will, lies within their own hands.

Not only are these modern day culprits stealing our time they can also steal your health. The Western world has increased in weight do to the simple fact that technology keeps you sedentary. What a bummer. I want to emphasis that the answer is not always the answer; why? You can have the answer but that does not mean that you are doing to apply the knowledge. There are more than plenty of distractions to go around for every cause imaginable. So much so that distraction has become our foe. Now that you can breathe a little easier knowing that you are not fully to blame let’s take a look at a few things that you can do to help you really really meet some of your personal goals for you this year. • Identify 3 (not 5 or 10) just 3 very specific things that you would like to achieve this year emotional energy and instead created paralysis. Within no time at all something else becomes the new thing to research, to study, to discover, to overcome. All to the same end. You see, the horse and carrot. The horse keeps chasing the carrot but never is able to be satisfied because little did he know, the carrot was held by a string always just outside of this poor stallions reach. We like the horse have so many options available we often find ourselves more confused than when we first started seeking solutions to the obstacles. Let’s take weight loss for example. Every year or two there is a new diet trend being marketed on the mainstream. When people look at these multiple options they often times don’t know where to start, how to go about applying the new fad or craze. They are afraid they will make the wrong choice, fail at yet another attempt towards weight loss. So instead, they make no choice at all (which, by the way, is a choice). Which keeps them heavy hearted and remaining heavy in weight too. Now when it comes to exercise it’s no different. There are so many different exercise programs springing into existence almost monthly. Get a healthy heart, lose weight quickly, get that beach body, lose pounds and inches! The advertising screams at you; “pick me, pick me”! Yet, to the same resolve; brain and body paralysis. You can examine each area of our lives and see that there is a remedy available for us, just go and search the internet. We have been plunged into a pit of DISTRACTION. Here are just a few that are your nemesis.

Exotic Fruits of Thailand

Sapodilla (La-mut) - This fruit looks like a large brown plum. The Thai way is to peel it with a sharp knife directed away from you and with the index finger just in front of the blade, guiding it along. You peel the fruit and then cut it through the middle in a zigzag fashion, for display. Lamut has a subtle flavor that isn’t particularly sweet, and yet seems to taste like brown sugar – if that makes any sense - It’s delicate and delicious!

Dragon Fruit (Gao Mung Gorn) - This is probably the most dramatic-looking of all the Thai fruits, and the outside appearance gives NO indicator of the inside appearance at all! The fruit is a bright pink oblong shape with pointed green leaves springing out from all sides – hence the name, as it DOES look a little dragonlike. Cutting it open down the middle of the fruit will display a white center, filled with tiny black dots. To eat this fruit, scoop out the filling with a spoon. This fruit is moist, sweet, crunchy and delicious! When

Durian (Tu-Rian) - is one of the most bizarre fruits on earth. It is a rich, unique tasting fruit, but to some, it is a putrid-smelling, lousy excuse for a food. It has an extremely strong and unpleasant aroma, as well as a deadly look. Trying this fruit is a step into another world. Durian is quite expensive and due to it’s powerfully imposing smell; it is actually banned from many hotels, busses and planes.

Lychee (Linjee) - Covered by a red, roughly textured rind that is inedible but easily removed, the inside of a lychee consists of a layer of sweet, translucent white flesh with a grape-like texture. The centre contains a single glossy brown nut-like seed that should not be eaten. 20

www.krabi-magazine.com

Mangostein (Mang-Kut) - Mangosteen is a bizarre looking fruit with a round, deep purple shell. It has flavorful white flesh that is eaten in sections. This has a delicious, distinctive flavor that is also wonderful for juices. Mangostein is becoming better known globally for it’s remarkable healing properties.

Guava (Farang) - Looks like a bumpy/wrinkled green apple. Cutting guava is very pretty. Slice ½ way into it, wedge-like, and then slice all around the guava this way. We pulled out the wedges and ate them this way. This doesn’t taste like the Hawaiian fruit. Hawaiian guava fruits (called strawberry guava) are pink and sweeter. These were somewhat bland, crunchy and starchy – a little pear-like.

Rambutan (NgoR) - The name is derived from the Malay word, rambut, meaning hair, which is a perfect name. The fuzzy, colorful covering of this fruit is unforgettable. Peeling this dramatic covering away reveals a firm, white, translucent flesh. It tastes like a sweet version of a pear, and is a lovely centerpiece for any dinner table.

Longan (Lam-Yai) – look like big brown grapes on a branch. They have a thin but hard shell that is easy to break open. The flesh is clear and very sweet with a pit inside. These are delicious but don’t eat too many at one time, as you can get cold sores or even a fever.

Rose Apple (Chom-Poo) - This looks like a cross between a thin red pepper and an apple. Cut them into lengthwise slices and eat the thin pieces. These are delicious – sweet and crunchy. They are also called Bell or Mountain Apples.

Shine in your Andaman..................... Goodbye 2017, hello 2018! Out with the old and in with the new. Thats what they say right? Well Krabi is making it’s own changes this new year, one of them comes in the form of a new performance being offered at the current Muay Thai Stadium every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

29 January I 2018

The performance is called The Andaman Shine and it’s purpose is to show off the culture of Krabi and the Andaman region but do so in a fun, colourful and intriguing fashion with lights, colors, all sorts of costumes, smoke, collars and of course many talented performers. Krabi is a diverse place; it’s home to a range of cultures and religions groups both Buddhist, Islamic as well as Christian people live together, each culture and group respecting one another creating a balanced and healthy environment for everyone. Krabi and Southern Thailand for that matter is home of some of Thailand’s most prolific and busy rubber and palm plantations. These plantations provide jobs for thousands of residents and are actually one of the leading industries in the region. The fishing industry is another prolific industry throughout the region, a large number f the local population works on the many thousands of longtail boats which make the arduous journey day in and day out looking for squid, marlin, barracuda and many other aquatic treats. These The original name for Krabi was actually Pakasai which means ‘sword’ and is thought to be named after an ancient sword found buried in the mouth of the Krabi river. The name was later changed sometime in the 29th century after Thailand became more of a cohesive unified country. There are many iconic statures dotted throughout Krabitown which were installed to remember people of the provinces history, from it’s 40,000 year old cave paintings in Khao Kanap Nam mountain to the sober toothed tiger, Krabi has been a place of discovery, friendship, unification and above all acceptance. People of difference

breeds, difference beliefs, different ways of living can live side of side here in perfect harmony. The Andaman Shine was thought to show off Krabi’s rich history, it’s long colourful timeline and it’s bright and ever evolving future all in a performance over the course of an evening. A team to choreographers was brought in from Bangkok to manage the dance routines, the costumes, the lighting and overall idea of what the owner wanted to display. The whole performance is a fantastical one, set in Krabi but in a slightly altered realty, a somewhat of an alice in wonderland if you will but the characters and overbearing storyline is one set in Krabi about the provinces history and culture. Showtimes are, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 7pm-9pm and feature a buffet first with beer and refreshments served during the performance. Come down and experience the wonder of The Andaman.

The Head

Smile!

Thailand is the 'Land of Smiles', and it's an important part of the culture and greeting. Smile, don't lose your temper, keep a calm voice. Accept what people offer you with grace. If you don't like something, carefully decline, and smile

Sacred and revered. Even if it’s a ruined, half destroyed statue of the deity – treat it with the utmost respect and you will shine in the eyes of the Thai. Common sense here – don’t clamber up onto one or mimic a pose for a photo. Snap a shot respectfully and if possible, ask a monk if it’s okay.

Public displays of affection are a big no-no all over Thailand. Maybe the restaurant is not the best place for snogging.

In Buddhism, the feet are seen as the lowest part of the body, both literally and guratively. Never point your feet at a Thai, monk or statue of Buddha. Instead, sit with your feet under your knees or cross-legged.

34

Easy this one – remove your shoes or sandals at any indoor space. When in doubt, look for other shoes at the doorway and follow suit. Resorts may be an exception, but absolutely take them off at a Wat (temple) or Thai’s home.

JUST ACROSS THE RIVER LAYS A LAND WORTH VISITING

K

oh Klang is on the west coast of southern Thailand, at the mouth of Krabi River in the Andaman Sea. It is the closest island to Krabi town, opposite the Krabi river. To reach Koh Klang from Krabi town head south along the riverside promenade a few hundred metres from Chao Fah pier and look for a small floating pier just past the marina in Thara Park. Boats run continually throughout the day and cost 20 baht per person, plus an extra 10 baht for a motorbike. From here or Chao Fah pier, you can also pay 50 baht for a private crossing. The island is connected only by longtail boats and crossings take as little as ten minutes. Translated as “Middle Island” in Thai, Koh Klang is located in Klong Prasong Sub District, which covers a total area of 26 Sq kilometers. The sub-district has four villages, three are located on Koh Klang island: Ban Koh Klang, Ban Klong Prasong and Ban Klong Kum and a forth village, Ban Bang Kanun is located on the mainland. Most visitors arrive in the northwest, at ThaLay pier, in the largest of Koh Klang’s three villages. A strip of white concrete shoots inland and then cuts south along the coastline, ending at Laem Kham in the far southeast. There are no cars on the island only a mix of Local Tuk Tuks, motorbike and bicycles. The 6KM drive from one end of the island to the other takes about 15-20 minutes, so you can safely explore the island in a short day. Crossing with your personal motorbike will enable you to take in all the richness and authenticity of the island, Luxuriant vegetation, goats and water buffalos grazing in the fields, families taking naps under their raised woody houses and big lizards darting across the road here and there. Koh Klang is home to nearly 5000 residents, with a rural landscape it is often hard to believe. 70% of the population are indigenous people of the island and 30% originated

50

from Krabi and other districts of Krabi. The inhabitants on the island are 98% Muslim and 2% Buddhist. Islam’s traditional moral guidelines have not been relaxed here, including for travelers. The call to prayer can be heard all over the Island from each of the mosques, all of which serve for worship and gatherings. Although Koh Klang is only a five minute boat ride from Krabi town, the friendly Muslim families living here maintain a simple and modest life, which they are proud to share with visitors searching for an insight into authentic southern Thai culture. Signs posted throughout the island make this perfectly clear. Calm, quiet, traditional, Koh Klang is the antithesis of nearby touristic party spots. The community is tightknit and everyone knows everyone else. Most families are fishermen, followed by rice farmers and coconut and banana farmers. Koh Klang offers great opportunities to cherish a simple life by the sea, pamper in natural peace, meet local people and

observe traditional local life. The local people are involved in developing ecotourism on the island with the help of the local government. Koh Klang is also traditional fishing community where visitors can see the living relationship between locals and the ocean that surrounds them. Community members use ingenious, local

www.krabi-magazine.com

methods to capture fish, crabs and shellfish. From the Tha-Hin pier you can take a long tail boat and sail along the Krabi river to the high seas to learn about Shallow Water Fishing. The fish nets are stuck to wooden planks and form a giant V-shaped trap in the seas. At the base of the V, there are dense nets in which the fish gets caught during the high tide. It is from these net traps that the local fishermen catch the fish using submerged baskets. Every time the fish basket is submerged, it brings up a huge quantity of fish. Because of pollution and over-exploitation, many varieties of fish are depleting. Despite this, there are still many fish that are available in abundance for example, Milkfish, Barramundi, Seabass etc. Koh Klang is famous for fresh seafood as it’s one of Krabi’s major seafood producers. Small fisherman trade their daily catch with many merchants on the island and mainland. This marine life survives thanks to the extensive mangrove forest that covers the entire island. Koh Klang’s mangrove constitutes an important part in the biodiversity of the island’s eco system. They provide a safe, protected environment for juvenile fish to grow, before they head out to sea. There are only two places in Thailand where Sangyod (or Sang Yot) Rice are produced and these are Koh Klang and

Pattalung. The canals in Koh Klang make it an ideal location for rice cultivation. Approximately 600 rai of land in the interior of the island are dedicated to rice farming. Sangyod Rice is a purple colored organic rice, having a very high fibre content. Its unique flavor is due to Koh Klang’s mixture of salt and fresh water. Traditionally, Sangyod rice is cooked during special occasions. In addition to producing a unique kind of rice, Koh Klang is also the place where the long tail boats or the traditional Hua Tong boats originated. They are now recognized as the symbol of Southern Thailand, in particular Krabi. These boats have become iconic on the beaches and islands throughout Southern Thailand, and often make great backdrops to photographs and postcards alike. The elongated “head” of the boat was designed to stand against the current while also acting as a marker for direction. If you are willing to try Koh Klang’s famous seafood, a string of restaurants floating along the northern canal raise their own fish. You can enjoy a very satisfying and reasonably priced seafood meal, simple pick your own fish or crab order the cooking procedure; fried, steamed or grilled, and enjoy! You can also have some seafood salads or try out the clams and lemongrass broth that will definitely delight your taste buds. The

dining atmosphere is serene, with a view to mangroves absorbing the lapping of waves as passing local fishermen speed along or dock their boat at their stilted homes. Just like the restaurants, houses are made of wood and rest on stilts, there is one major difference though; they are raised over ground and not water. Evidence that there has been Tsunami or flooding damage in the area and now people are more prepared. Bicycles, colorful clothes being dried in the hot sun, scattered toys, pet cats and dogs snoozing in the cool shade, the area underneath each house narrates its own story. While our discovery of the island’s nooks and crannies was about to end and we were heading back to the pier we came across the local markets which lined the main street, it was full of small stalls and was predominantly managed by women selling vegetables, fruits, dry fish and different sauces in sealed transparent small plastic bags that seemed irresistible and tempting. Life in Koh Klang seems to be frozen in a different time period, far away from hustle and bustle of urban life just across the river. The island warmly welcome guests who come to learn and share in the local culture and way of life. In respect of the precious local culture, they ask for cooperation to follow their local rules.

There are some things you might want to know before you do so in the Kingdom of Thailand. Thailand is some of the most beautiful places in the world, it offers so many different landscapes to visit and record with your drone. Temples, cities, islands, endless jungles and so much more are all eagerly awaiting your drone’s lense. It’s pretty amazing let us tell you, but if the Thai government is cracking down on it’s one-time super easy laws regulating flying drones in it’s airspace, then it’s only fair that you’re kept in the loop.

penalties of up to 100,000thb or one year in jail. Don’t worry though, the process of registering your drone is relatively easy and will avoid a lot of headaches in the long run.

Since drones entered into the mainstream market, they were regulated in Thailand by their flights inside of National parks and government regulated areas. So it was simple, just don’t fly in these designated areas and your all set to go. Now with an estimated 50,000 drones throughout Thailand there danger is much more prolific, there are simply easier and easier to get ones hands on and therefore offer more opportunities for accidents to both pilots or innocent bystanders.

Copy your passport and sign it Proof of address (house registration, lease, rental contract or work permit) Photos of your drone and the serial number on it as well

First you want to visit the NTBC website (www.nbtc.go.th) and download the form on drone registration, then afterwards you need download the registration application, then also prepare the following documents:

Thinking of Droning?

two copies of the application you printed from the NTBC website then you want to visit one of the 17 NBTC locations throughout Thailand, if you cannot find one of them you can always go to one of the police stations in Thailand such as the Krabitown police station, the Ao Nang or even the Koh Lanta police to register your drone. Once you register the drone you are almost done, then afterwards you need to send a registration application to CAAT which can be downloaded from their website at www.caat.or.th/en/archives/27220 the whole process takes about 2 months in

Now with the increase in the number of drones flooding into Thailand, the CAAT (The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand) has unleashed a new round of laws for drone owners and pilots flying in Thailand. If your drone is over 250Gram (most are nowadays) you must register your drone with NBTC (National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission) or face

Some rules to keep in mind when after you register your drone with CAAT and NBTC is that it’s always important to fly safe, always fly in a clear line of sight fly away from crowds of people or traffic and overall keep away from accident prone areas. Here are some rules to keep in mind prior to pressing take off: must not fly in a way that may cause harm to the life, property and peace of others must not fly into restricted area, limited area and dangerous area announced in Aeronautical Information Publication – Thailand or AIP-Thailand and also at government buildings and hospitals unless permission is given. take-off and landing area must not be obstructed by anything must keep the Unmanned Aircraft in line-of-sight at all times and not rely on the monitor or other devices must only fly between sunrise and sunset when the Unmanned Aircraft can clearly be seen must not fly in or near clouds must not fly within 9 km (5 nautical miles) from airport or temporary airfield unless having permission from the airport or airfields operators must not fly over 90 meters above the ground must not fly over cities, villages, communities or areas where people are gathered must not fly near other aircraft that have pilots must not violate the privacy rights of others must not cause a nuisance to others must not deliver or carry dangerous items or lasers on the Unmanned Aircraft must not fly horizontally closer than 30 meters (100 feet) to people, vehicles, constructions or buildings

A moment for Spice

Thai Chili’s or Birds eye chilis, are believe it or not a native of Thailand, they actually originated from the west indies in the Caribbean sea where they have always been a part of the local staple diet. As a result of trading and the baby footprints of globalization and colonalization, the Spanish and Portuguese brought the hot spice through the Indian ocean and into Southeast Asia. In the general Indian ocean region India was actually the first country after trading with the merchants from Portugal, Holland and Spain to grow and use chilies in their everyday dishes. It is often assumed that the Chili grows naturally in India and Thailand, but this is not the case, yes it can grow there but it is not a native plant species. Imaging the Thai and Indian cuisine before the introduction of the potent and robust Birds eye chili? I personally cannot imagine Thai food without spice. Red chilies contain high amounts of vitamin C and beta-carotene making them both extremely healthy for your skin and vision. Yellow and especially green chili’s which are essentially unripe fruit and therefore contain a considerably lower amount of both substances. Chili’s are also a good source of vitamin B in particular vitamin B6. They are also very high in potassium, magnesium and iron, making them a great healthy choice to add to any dish you can think of. All hot chili peppers contain phytochemicals known collectively as capsaicinoids. These chemicals are reputed to have powerful health benefits such as helping protect the body against cancer, helping weight loss for the obese, reducing bad cholesterol in the bloodstream and they may even play a role in alleviating chronic pain due to the powerful analgesic effects of the capsaicinoids. Chili’s strong and spicy taste has become a distinctive characteristic of Thai cuisine and can be found in nearly every dish you can get your hands on (nearly). Since its arrival in Thailand during the Ayuthaya era, more than 600 years ago, Thai cuisine has received influences from a number of foreign nations. India and has began to adopt the strong Chili flavours, diverging from earlier roots in a milder more bland cuisine, in which only local herbs such as garlic and onions dominated. Chili’s have taken several hundred years to become an essential part of Thai food culture and has since become inseparable to most Thai dishes. Today Southeast Asia is the main exporter of chillies to the rest of the world.

Today’s modern age can be overwhelming; social media is a constant attack on our psyche and ego, relentless political news stories seem to never stop pouring out of the mainstream media outlets, and we’re all connected to this 24 hours a day. A group of likeminded individuals who have traveled the world and experienced this sensation for some time have decided to change their lives to live in a paradigm shift, and in doing so offer others to join them on this journey. Let’s start with the beginning, when our journey commenced many years ago. Called by the numerous mysteries of our world we decided to travel. Since then we’ve never stopped, although travelling took different forms. BlissTribes as a collective is a product of our travelling experiences and their numerous consequences. Travelling addresses the need that some people have to discover and explore new territories, new cultures, new ways, new values, new perceptions. Travelling and by extension living abroad for extensive periods of time, is exposing oneself to the unknown, observing subtle and obvious differences that disturb, amaze, shocks and triggers questions, debates, and more often than not, a deep and rather abrupt revision of who we are, amending our own identity. It’s like watching a movie, which the ending cannot be predicted but whose teachings are transformative. How amazing is that? When we are brave enough to sincerely confront our taught values to the ones we witness and experience we then can expand our consciousness, we grow our awareness and we become a stronger

Bliss Tribes is a community of free minds, artists and explorers whose mission is to

- Design wellness and self-development activities, workshop and retreats to create a more conscious, resilient and ethical world community for sustainability - Become a platform for all thing wellness and coordinate with independent practitioners to implement our retreats, workshops and activities - Strengthen local communities by involving locals in participating and organizing our activities

part of the collective intelligence. Our root system expands and reaches new grounds. We absorb a new and more diverse array of “nutrients” in the form of ideas, visions, feelings and relationships. We become more resilient, more alive, more capable of fully expressing our potential as we detach ourselves from norms and rules, set values and conventions. We become fluid and adaptable, we embrace the most fundamental feature of life itself, wholeness and uniqueness in diversity, we become one with the whole while unique in our gifts that we are better able to manifest. It is fascinating to see how individuals and communities throughout the world have different degree of selfdevelopment, sense of community and different tools to enable wellness, resilience and bliss. Throughout our journeys and experiences we have been immersed in the heart of some of these knowledge and traditions while deconstructing our own foundations. Through time we learnt to respect, value and embrace this diversity of ways and practices and identified what fit us individually the most as a way to let our own light shine, liberating us from our fears.

What do we propose? While BlissTribes is intended to offer itself as a gathering and nurturing platform available for all, we also organise events, including workshops and retreats here in rural Krabi. Our community is composed of skillful and experienced Yoga instructors as well as Reiki, Tai Chi, Qi Gong, Nutrition professionals as well as creative artists and healers. Our tribe also hosts Nature therapists and sustainable living experts in addition to outdoor adventure and sustainable tourism professionals. Together we propose a diverse array of activities, workshops and retreats including Yoga for all styles and experiences, Reiki from introduction to Master level, Tai Chi and Qigong short and long sets, Singing bowl meditations, Shamanistic journeys, Ecstatic dance and music therapy, mindful movement and rock climbing, slack-lining, nature therapy and nature literacy workshops. These activities belong to our six distinct but complementary programs: “body therapy”, “mind therapy”, “mindful eating and nutrition”, “self-realization”, “nature therapy and sustainable living” and “connecting with others” programs. These programs together help put in practice our guiding principle: “Wellness is achieved when a fluid and adaptive balance among physical, spiritual, social, intellectual, emotional and environmental components of one’s life is attained”. The activities we offer are sometimes assembled in specific short (two to three days) packages as well as longer (seven-eight days) retreats, which also include unique accommodation options allowing our retreats to achieve their full healing and self development objectives.

Strong of these experiences, BlissTribes gather a community of free minds, artists and explorers who came together to share pieces and bits of these experiences which contribute, we believe, to a blissful life. BlissTribes is thriving in giving back what we have leanred, what we achieved and the skills we developed through our journeys because we believe this is a beautiful purpose. Through our activities and experiences, we thrive in encouraging a collective reorientation of our thinking, as a global community, towards what we believe is beautiful to each of us, so beauty and goodness becomes the new motivation. BlissTribes thrives in acknowledging problems but looking at the solutions, digging in the vast collective intelligence to enable the shift that we need towards a blissful life. As such BlissTribes is a wellness solutions provider, spreading love, boundless creativity and inspiration for a better and more beautiful world.

The Yoga and Healing Art” retreat – BlissTribes’ embodiment

We have recently created a unique retreat that crystalizes our vision and assemble the diversity of healing art we have experienced. This retreat “Yoga and healing arts” is intended to be a premiere source of holistic wellness education through which participants are introduced to a series of body-mind practices, which are intended to help not only heal chronic illnesses or acute issues but also achieve a state of optimal holistic health and well-being. The knowledge, techniques and tools we offer during this retreat are intended to help participants become active actors in the process of their own healing, guiding them back to the realization of harmony and balance in their entire physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual dynamic. This

experiential retreat is rooted in both western and eastern healing traditions. This retreat stands on one of BlissTribes foundational principles; recognizing that different practices have their own strengths and will not equally fit one’s expectations, perceptions and needs. For example Tai Chi may be more related to wholebody integration and flow; Chi kong is more useful for energy cultivation and relaxation, Meditation for calming the mind and improving concentration, Yoga for flexibility, body energetic and Reiki for self healing, etc. By integrating different practices in one’s life, we can better guide those on a quest for dual cultivation of body and mind and the role it has toward improving one’s physical, mental and spiritual health.

This retreat is also dedicatedly practical. Focus is given on hands-on experiences and DIY ‘micro-exercises’ that provide participants with the necessary knowledge and skills to easily continue these practices on their own in their daily lives. This is a very important and unique component as when a regular wellness routine is implemented over a sufficiently long period of time we can dig deeper into the roots of problems and identify lasting solutions. Finally, this retreat, although more strongly focusing on individual-based healing and self development, is designed and organized in a way to encourage sustainable living, cultivating environmental and social awareness through nature-based activities such as nature therapy islands exploration and an introduction to free diving.

WHY THIS RETREAT? Discover and experience a diversity of yoga practic es and es- tablish a rst contact with Shamanic journeys

Rebalance your energy ow and learn energy healing with Reiki and crystal singing bowl treatments

Cultivate your mindfulness through meditation, Tai Chi and Chi Kung

Rejuvenate in nature, explore coral reefs and tropical rainforests

Take time to relax, laugh, celebrate and explore hidden parts of yourself

BLISS TRIBES STYLE

We wish to o er this retreat to a maximum of 10 participants for an exclusive and deeply healing wellness experience. We also o er the opportunity for your partner or friend to accompany you and participate in an activity of their choice as an opportunity to better share and understand your (inner) journey.

own right but they all have the same relaxed feeling much of the island is famous for. There are a number of other regions all over the island though and each has it’s one little charm to offer, and truth be told a great way to see the island is to rent a motorbike or car and just go North to South, it’s cheap, fun and offers

numerous opportunities to stop and explore at your own leisure. To the South of Koh Lanta is the famous Lighthouse which features a nature walking trail, 2 beaches and one of the best vantage points for dramatic cliff photography on the island. So what are you waiting for, get going and explore this not so small island.

UNPLUG IN

K

KOH JUM

oh Jum Island is still the quintessential destination in Krabi province if you are looking for authentic Thai village life and development that is still a small footprint.

Geography brought electricity to Koh Jum late in 2009 as the island was in the direct path of the new underwater electric cable connecting Koh Phi Phi to the mainland. So now that Koh Jum is plugged-in, has it lost its reputable character that has attracted intrepid travelers over the past couple of decades? We are pleased to report that Koh Jum is still as tranquil and laid back as it always has been. In fact, what is most noticeable are the lack of noisy generators at most of the islands resorts. Folks come to Koh Jum to tune out; the island’s nature and culture dominate the minimal tourist infrastructure. The existing resorts on Koh Jum all have their own family-run character, ranging from the backpackers paradise to luxurious beach villas..... Koh Pu Mountain is the dominant geological feature on the island at over 400 meters. It’s a great hike for the adventurous and a vital refuge of native habitat still harboring Asian Pied Hornbills and Burmese pythons. The three villages; Koh Pu, Ting Rai and Koh Jum are situated on the back side of the island, amongst the mangroves while the resorts are located opposite, facing the open Andaman Sea. This division allows the villagers to remain authentic without a significant tourist infrastructure while the resorts are all located on the beaches. Koh Jum is predominately a large Muslim populated subdistrict of Krabi, home to over 1,500 inhabitants. The locals of these villages engage mostly in fishing, rubber cultivation and the local crafts of cloth weaving and painting or ‘batik’ as it is known as here. While the north is mountainous, the south is comprised of dense jungle, cashew nut trees, rubber plantations, casuarinas and nipa-palms. Since all the resorts face West, there are epic sunsets to be had all along the island. The renowned Koh Jum Lodge is an excellent place to stay for a few days, and has superb views to boot. Access to the island is by longtail taxi boats which leave from the mainland at the port town of Laem Kruat. There is now a songthaew you can take direct from Krabi Town to Laem Kruat. During the high season most visitors come to Koh Jum using the Krabi-Koh Lanta ferry which stops at two locations on Koh Jum, both of which are offshore so local longtail boats will come from the island to pick up passengers. The lack of any deep ports on the island keep the ferry boats out at sea and almost prevent large masses of tourists from overcrowding the island. Getting here is an adventure and this ends up defining the interesting community of resorts and visitors that have made this island their home and the place they

return to year after year. Getting to Koh Jum can be very simple or a bit of a nightmare, it all depends on how much you know about it. This is where Krabi magazine can help, we recently took the trip to Koh Jum ourselves and have decided to share the adventure with all of our readers. There are 2 ways to get to Koh Jum- by passing ferry or longtail boat. There are ferries that leave from Koh Lanta at 8am and from Krabi at 11am, both ferries stop as they pass alongside Koh Jum and signal to longtail boats to come and pick up visitors to land ashore Koh Jum. Koh Phi Phi also has ferries which leave at 2pm and operate on the same principle as above. The second way to get to Koh Jum is to go to the port town of Laem Kruat, from where you can catch a longtail boat directly to Koh Jum- this was our favorite of the 2 methods of travel. If you are driving, it takes about one hour to get from Ao Nang to Laem Kruat. You just head to Tesco Lotus and then continue until you see the large overhead signs which tell you to turn right for “Koh Jam”. This road will lead to the small locality of Laem Kruat, where you will find a large pier with boats going to Koh Jum. If you don’t have transport of your own, you can always catch a blue and yellow “songthaew” - the local buses that have benches in the back. On the side of the “songthaew” will be written – Krabi, Bus Station, Tesco, Big C, Laem Kruat, they are frequent and easy to spot.

Well worth the experience.

These buses will leave from all of these locations at intervals throughout the day and will take you directly to the Laem Kruat pier. Now, the pier is a bit misleading. We waited at the end of the pier before realizing the longtail taxis were passing us by and docking at the mainland. Then we went back and followed our noses along past the shops until we saw a slipway with goods and people being unloaded. It was the second slipway we needed to get to “Moo Too”, the place on Koh Jum we were being collected from. If you know the name of the pier on Koh Jum you need to get to, just ask anyone in this area and they will direct you to the correct boat. We got on and soon were chugging along through the mangroves with a boat full of happy local Muslim women that looked as they hadn’t changed a bit since 1925. We arrived at Koh Jum just 45 minutes later, paid our 70thb fare and were taken by “taxi” (a battered old pickup truck) through the winding dirt track until we reached our destination resort. Give it a go and you will see a different side of Thailand from years gone by.
