Recognition for Layana’s Contribution to Thailand’s Environment.

Layana Resort & Spa has, for many years, recognized the importance of environmental protection on the island of Koh Lanta, always ensuring the development of the resort is mindful of its natural surrounds and the needs of the local community. It was, therefore, a particularly proud honor to be presented this month with Thailand Green Awards UK’s “Green Steps” Award. Launched in 2007 by the London office of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the Thailand Green Excellence Awards UK recognize and celebrate organizations in the travel and tourism industry that have made an outstanding contribution to growing Thailand as a sustainable destination. This year, the awards ceremony took place at the World Travel Market in London on Monday 6th November, in the presence of HRH Princess Ubolratana Rajakanya Siriwatana Bhanawadee, In accepting the award on behalf of Layana Resort & Spa, a delighted Stefan Heintze, General Manager of the resort, noted: “we are constantly looking for ways to improve our contribution to the local environment; recent investments in the restoration of the pier at Band Rand Mar, a small village on the Krabi mainland, and in the construction of our own water storage reservoir on Koh Lanta that will improve the water quality at the resort and make best use of the island’s existing natural resources, are good examples. It is, therefore, extremely pleasing to have these efforts recognized by the London office of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, with this award. Our sincere thanks to those who nominated and voted for our resort”

13 December I 2017

HOLIDAYS IN THE TROPICS!! For most of European and North American people, Christmas is a winter holiday, helping to add some sparkle to the long and dreary December evenings. Traditional festivities and costumes seem to be made for cold weather: the satisfyingly rich food, the warm spices of mulled wine, fur-lined Santa hats, the garishly bright decorations and the sharp notes of carols on a crisp, chilly morning. The seasonal decorations are about as far as most Thai people will go to acknowledge the Yuletide festival (although the song, ‘Jingle Bells’, is very popular and is taught in schools all year round). Some people will give presents, this is a fairly recent phenomenon, and tends to take place around New Year. Festivities are mainly reserved for shopping centers, private parties and restaurants serving special holiday set menus. For most of the Thai population, Christmas is just a day like any other, which is perfect if you have come abroad to escape the excesses of turkey and mince pies. The vast majority of local tour companies and activity centers will be operating a normal schedule, so you can, if you wish, choose to spend your Christmas Day diving, kayaking, rock-climbing or simply pick-nicking on your favorite island without the spectre of Santa Claus looming on the horizon. Shops and banks will also be open for business as usual. Travel agents and big hotels often assume that you wish to celebrate as if you were at home and it is also possible to do so (minus the freezing weather). Most attempts to stage festivities for guests are usually following the formula of a buffet meal, with a few games, a band and schoolgirls Thai dancing. Whereas Christmas passes virtually unnoticed in Thailand, New Year (both 31 December and 1 January) is a public holiday and an excuse for wild partying. ‘Pi mai’, as the new year is known in Thai, is one of the year’s biggest celebrations, uniting all ages and religions. The bars, restaurants and hotels in Krabi will be rising to the occasion. If you are not tied in to a Gala Dinner, we would advise heading down to the nearest beach, where you will be able to see all the fireworks from the hotel celebrations, as well as float your own fire balloon for good luck in the coming year. Here are some tips for making the most of the New Year celebrations, as well as some advice about staying safe through the holiday:

- Both December 31st and January 1st are public holidays, and the New Year is widely celebrated across the kingdom.

- There is a countdown being held at Nopparat Thara Beach on 31 December, along with a market fair.

- For the youngsters and young at heart, post-midnight, there will be parties in most areas; try Tonsai for a beach party, Luna Bar for the dancefloor or Center Point Plaza for live bands.

- If possible, avoid driving anywhere on New Year’s Eve. If you must, please be extra careful on the roads. Drink-driving is very common here and accidents, often fatal, increase exponentially during this time of year.

Stuck for a New Year’s resolution? Make one to visit (or revisit) one of the most beautiful places on Earth: Krabi. You won’t regret it.

Have a great, safe and happy New Year 2018 / 2561 from all of us here at

Y

ou hear more and more today that the older generation is travelling worldwide as they herald the blanket statement, “We are spending our children’s inheritance”! Why not? Is this a question that parents should shrug off considering or the younger generation feel entitled to or offended by? Recently we had an opportunity to meet a woman using a portion of her years of hard earned money to take a vacation here in Krabi, Thailand. Let’s find out why?

KM: What made you want to travel all the way to Thailand as an unescorted older woman? Karen: Although it was going to be my first time travelling to Thailand most of my life I’ve wanted to travel. I heard about a Wellness Program in Krabi. I wanted to do something for myself and maybe volunteer somewhere if I could as well. I thought I’d kill two birds with one stone. KM: When you were considering coming to participate in the ten day program available through “Get Juiced for Life” what expectations did you have and what did you want to achieve? Karen: I wanted to learn about being healthier, learn what juicing is all about and how to make my own juices, trying to eat better and how to get away from so much meat. KM: What made you so open to experiencing a wellness retreat in Thailand? Karen: I have children and young grandchildren. For me it was important that I learn to stay young and healthy. Healthy in my

heart, my mind and my spirit; for them. A big part of me was doing this for them. KM: Did you have any fears about coming into an environment where you thought you may not be able to do some of the things that younger participants might be able to do? Karen: I wondered about that; sure. I wondered if I was going to be able to keep up. But when I worked with the instructors I felt really encouraged and when I participated with the younger people it was fun. I saw that there were some things that I could do and I saw there we some things I couldn’t do and others could not do it either. It took the pressure off and we all just did what we could. I loved meeting different people, different nationalities and backgrounds who were all trying to achieve the same thing; being healthy. KM: How did you feel about participating in the Life Coaching offered? Going past food and fitness and looking into more personal areas of your life? Karen: I actually wasn’t intimidated at all. I sort of knew that some things would probably come up that I hadn’t spoke about to anyone or in great detail. I felt that this was the time to face my fears or giants; if you will. To slaughter those giants and learn how to be happier with who I am and content to move forward in my life. KM: Do you feel that taking a look at the whole person; spirit, mind and body benefits all of who you are? Karen: It does help because you open up a part of your heart and life to share with people who have knowledge and who can care for you. That means a lot. People can come away feeling confident and more peaceful that they can really move forward no matter what age; that it’s never too late. KM: When you first joined the retreat you were not interested in sharing your age with people. Why do you think after 10 days you felt comfortable about sharing your age with others? Karen: I think after seeing that I could do more than I anticipated it was really encouraging. I began to agree with what people say, “Age is just a number”. I’m thinking, it’s okay to be twenty nine! (laughing heartily). On the serious side I know that it’s important that I stay young in my mind and be healthy both emotionally, physically and spiritually. I have young grandkids that I need to keep up with. I’m okay now with saying that being seventy years of age is really not that old.

December I 2017

KM: It’s great that you have grandkids. Are they a big motivator for you? Karen: Yes, absolutely! I want to be able to play with them, go places and build intimacy with them. To me that’s what life is all about. KM: How did you feel about all of the comments that your younger peers said about you during the retreat? People who were 20-

21

would your advice be? Karen: I would say three words; Go For It! (Lots of laughter). It’s going to make them feel better both physically, emotionally and spiritually in every way. The juices were delicious, the meals were fabulous and nutritious. All of the activities were doable no matter your age or fitness level. You never walked away hungry. You knew at the end of the day that you gave your whole being a big Happy Smile. KM: What about younger people; those considered to be in the prime of their life? Karen: The sooner you start the better off you will be. Learn now, especially in our day and age with so much fast food, busied lifestyles. We all know that these things are ultimately not good for us. KM: So many people focus primarily on food and fitness and still have not achieved overall health and personal well-being. What did you learn during your retreat to position you to go beyond the kitchen and the gym to achieve overall health? Karen: I learned to look at myself as a whole person. My spirit, mind and body. Not only what I put in my mouth and how much I need to exercise. I learned about the importance of fresh air, balanced rest, proper sunlight and even how to have healthy relationships. It helps with our attitude and how it benefits us all the way around. 40 years younger than you and how you inspired them tremendously. Karen: It really boosted my confidence. Coming in with the mindset that I was going to do what I could and simply do my best helped also. I am really thankful for all of the compliments. They really meant a lot. KM: Karen you may have been encouraged but you may not have realized was what you were doing for them. They were being encouraged and motivated too. You were inspiring them to do for themselves at a younger age what you were experiencing for yourself during your latter years. KM: During your stay you experienced a 48 hour juice fast reboot. How did you feel about doing this for the first time? Karen: The coaches gave me a good head’s up about what I might experience. It wasn’t hard at all and I knew I was going to be getting nutritious juices. I was surprised that I wasn’t really hungry either. KM: If a retiree was considering coming to experience a Get Juiced for Life retreat what

22

KM: What do you feel is the value of doing a Get Juiced for Life Retreat in Krabi, Thailand? Karen: I loved the cultural aspect. Thai culture was very different from mine in the west. I found the people to be friendly and they smiled a lot. During the program we got to go through Thai villages, visit Buddhist temples, go to local markets, ride on motorbikes, eat lots of exotic fruit and witness wild monkeys and elephants. It was incredible!

KM: Do you have anything that you would like to tell the world? Karen: I wasn’t really sure how successful I was going to be at the program. It’s not that I had so much doubt but I guess I wondered if I was going to be able to keep up at my age. I made the decision to go for it and give it my best shot. That’s all that anyone can do and I feel really good about that. I can’t believe I climbed Krabi’s famous, Tiger Cave Temple stairs (1,260+ steps). That was a huge personal accomplishment. I’m so glad I did it; Yea! I’m going to remember for a long time the words that we would say during our fitness experiences; “Why do we do this”? “Because We Can”! Statistics show that when people are given money they will spend it within seventeen months. It does not matter if it’s a thousand dollars or one hundred thousand dollars. If you hand your hard earned nest egg over to your kids statistically they will simply spend it. So why not spend it not only on yourself but spend it on your children and even your grandchildren now. What you may be doing is leaving them a better nest egg than just spendable cash. You are leaving them with a nest egg of immeasurable shared experiences. We all know that that there can and never will be a price tag placed or of equal value than that of quality time; time spent building lasting memories for your children and grandchildren. Investing some of their inheritance now towards a healthier life may posture you to still leave a financial blessing but much greater; treasured memories.

Window on Krabi

Parks THA POM NATIONAL PARK Thapom is a simple local national park, not the easiest to access, but certainly worth the trip. Just outside Ao Nang, Thapom is a place where salty seawater and freshwater from the mountains mix perfectly creating an observable stratified layer, where both sea fish and freshwater fish live separately but together. Close to Ao Thalane Bay, Thapom is a 30 minute drive from Ao Nang.

Islands

KOH PODA This is the iconic island of Krabi and the first and most dramatic one you can see from Ao Nang beach. Hop on a longtail boat - the local wooden boats with their picturesque prow and sail away surrounded by turquoise water.

CHICKEN ISLAND This should be next on your list as it is right next to Koh Poda. From the right angle when passing Chicken Island (Koh Gai) you can catch a glimpse of a chicken’s neck and head, some would argue more like that of a turkey but it’s up to you. The second island, Koh Tub, is connected to Chicken Island by a sandy isthmus and people can walk from one to another at low tide. KOH HONG This island archipelago demands everyone’s attention as it is one of the highlights of Krabi Province. The Archipelago, a group of limestone islands with many hidden caves and lagoons makes it perfect for snorkeling and exploring. Make sure you visit Lading and Pakbia islands before Koh Hong as they are much less visited and sport a blend of both lush jungle and tropical

26

waters. Koh hong is usually crowded until 3pm so we recommend visiting other Lading and Pakbia in the morning, then going to Koh Hong after the crowds have started to leave. KOH PHI PHI Private bays, limestone cliffs, waters rich in marine life and caves where swallow’s birds nests are harvested are all here on the island that Leonardo Di Caprio once rolled his hot bod in while filming ‘The Beach’ at the now iconic Maya Bay. KOH JUM & KOH SIBOYA Both are unspoiled tropical hide-aways that have a unique atmosphere. Tune in to the slow culture here, imbibe the peace and recharge your batteries with the soundtrack of lapping waves. KOH LANTA The developing island at the southern end of the province known for its prime sunset views, heaps of activities and glimpses into sea gypsy life. Koh Lanta is also a National Park that comprises many local islands surrounded by coral reefs, such as Koh Ngai, Koh Mook and the remote Koh Rok.

KHAO PHANOM BENCHA NATIONAL PARK At 20 km from Krabi Town, the Khao Phanom Bencha national park comprises waterfalls, streams, lush forests and caves. It is home to all kind of flora and wildlife and to the highest mountain in the region from which it takes it’s name. One of the features of the park is Huay Thoi Waterfall where water runs down onto several huge pools. TARNBOK KHORANEE NATIONAL PARK Located in the north of the province, Tarnbok Khoranee national park is made up of limestone mountains, verdant tropical forest, caves and beautiful islands. It is well known kayaking explorers as there are a number of tributaries curving into a number of small caves boasting ancient cave paintings. SA MORAKOT, THE EMERALD POOL Truly a natural wonder of Krabi: a pond of turquoise water with an average temperature of 30-40°C fed by a hot spring in the middle of the jungle in Klong Thom district, 70 kilometers from Ao Nang. HOT SPRINGS Situated in Klong Thom district, These natural hot springs are natures jacuzzis. They melt away tensions, relieve the body and mind with the fresh spring water running over mineral enriched limestone rocks.

Beaches AO NANG BEACH: At 20 km from Krabi Town Ao Nang Beach is the most developed of Krabi’s many beaches. Ao Nang Beach is famous for it’s white sand beaches and large limestones karsts towering over the eastern edges. All of your accommodation, shopping and service needs can be found here. It is the hub from which to plan your trip to sea as well as to any number of the nearby islands.

TUBKAEK BEACH Next to Klong Muang Beach, Tub Keak beach is another place to just get away; long, clean and powerful, the area boasts breathtaking views over the Koh Hong archipelago and provides for wonderfully charming sunsets. From Tubkeak beach you can venture inside the National Park and try the nature trail “Naga trek” to one of the most spectacular viewpoints in Krabi.

NOPPHARAT THARA BEACH Just around the corner from Ao Nang, yet still undeveloped with only a few resorts, bars and restaurants, Noppharat Thara beach offers a bit more “local” feel than it’s sister Ao Nang. Attractive because of its natural setting, this is where local youngsters and families gather during sunset and on weekends. Savor some local Muslim snacks at the beach stalls, or fill yourself with seafood in the local restaurants at the end of the beach neat the Noppharat Thara National park headquarters. At low tide, walk out together with millions of small crabs on the sandy pathways to a small island on the western edge of the beach.

RAILAY AND TONSAI BEACHES Are split and separated from Ao Nang by a limestone mountain range. Railay has two sides, east and west, and its settings are simply marvelous: crystal clear waters, pure sandy beaches, lush mountains and rocky islands emerging from the sea. Both beaches are known all over the world for their famous climbing routes. They can only be reached by boat, a 15 minute ride from Ao Nang or 30 minutes from Krabi Town. Enjoy a cocktail in one of the beach bars, visit the Phranang Cave, challenge yourself on a rock climbing or ‘deep water solo’ cliff jumping into the sea, hike the limestone trail to a lagoon or the viewpoint or simply chill out and watch the day pass you by.

KLONG MUANG BEACH A further 20 km away from Ao Nang Klong Muang is the up-market side of Krabi, the place to be if you are after a peaceful and hassle free holiday. Catering to families and couples, it is here that you really get that well deserved repose, surrounded by pristine nature.

KOH LANTA BEACHES Koh Lanta has a wide selection of resorts for all tastes and pockets. Koh Lanta Yai island has long stretches of gleaming white sandy beaches and shallow emerald waters. Lined with tropical vegetation, a private spot is never more than a short walk away.

Reminder When visiting many of the national parks in krabi there is often an entrance fee which you need to pay by cash at the time of entrance. If you do book a tour through a local operator, please make sure to check with them prior to departing as to whether or not the tour price includes this national park fee.

ith todays generation ever changing and evolving faster and faster, and the world engaging in a more connected world, there seems to be that need to stand out, to make oneself stand above the crowd, to be an individual and define yourself. With nearly 8 billions people on planet earth it’s getting more and more important for each and every one of us to define ourselves in some way or another, to be an individual and have a voice. With the onset of facebook back in 2004 and it’s subsequent growth over the past decade it’s now the worlds leading online social community. Inside this community there are a number of celebrities who have defined themselves on the platform by their looks, their content and their personality. Many of these celebrates have grown their ‘brand’ by their loud, in your face happy and fun personalities. These new online personalities which have overflowed from the online world have seeped into mainstream society with many of them owning their own clothing lines, selling merchandise and sometimes even getting their own network show on television. No matter their platform, their media, their place, their message always remains constant with their brand. This new definition of a brand is

The customer is who the brand is originally built for but the renewed strength for a brand is only made by the acceptance of the people who buy it and continue it’s life, the brand adapts and changes to demand and over years of fine tuning a well defined product is born. the same year facebook was launched a clothing line in Bali was born, a clothing line that like facebook was focused around a younger generation of people who wanted to define themselves in various ways. A clothing line which offered people the opportunity to stand out, to be free to say something in an unaltered and not necessarily overpowering way, but rather in a more “I’m here and I have something to say” way. We all go to the beach for one common goal, to have fun! It’s fairly simple, to just enjoy yourself, spend time with friends and maybe meet some new ones. 69 Slam was

The Head

Smile!

Thailand is the 'Land of Smiles', and it's an important part of the culture and greeting. Smile, don't lose your temper, keep a calm voice. Accept what people offer you with grace. If you don't like something, carefully decline, and smile

Sacred and revered. Even if it’s a ruined, half destroyed statue of the deity – treat it with the utmost respect and you will shine in the eyes of the Thai. Common sense here – don’t clamber up onto one or mimic a pose for a photo. Snap a shot respectfully and if possible, ask a monk if it’s okay.

Public displays of affection are a big no-no all over Thailand. Maybe the restaurant is not the best place for snogging.

In Buddhism, the feet are seen as the lowest part of the body, both literally and guratively. Never point your feet at a Thai, monk or statue of Buddha. Instead, sit with your feet under your knees or cross-legged.

Easy this one – remove your shoes or sandals at any indoor space. When in doubt, look for other shoes at the doorway and follow suit. Resorts may be an exception, but absolutely take them off at a Wat (temple) or Thai’s home.

Krabi is proud to be called the home of hundreds of expats who have lived here for any period of time. Some come for a month and stop on their route to other destinations, others come for 6 months or a year and maybe teach English or work as a dive master, then there are those that have no intent of going home at all and begin to call Krabi their home. Now lets like to take a step back in time to another world, to another time, another setting, another world; 2001, before youtube and smart phones, a times when things were a little simpler and personal, a time when hand written letters were’t completely obsolete. 2001, the world trade centres had just been attacked and the American war in the middle easy was just getting underway, the Euro had just been put into circulation a few years before, travel was still not as accessible, airbnb wasn’t even an idea yet, airlines and hotels were still working out many bugs and problems with new websites such as booking. com and expedia.com which had just been launched a few years earlier. to put it in other words, it was a more difficult time to travel, it required more planning and thought. It wasn’t as easy as pulling out your phone and in 10 minutes you had round trip ticket from Bangkok to Amsterdam. The process of going from abroad to Thailand wasn’t such as simple as it is nowadays. The internet wasn’t so saturated with detailed blogs and forums about what visa you had to get and how to get it. There was a certain process for travel and it certainly wasn’t as accessibly as it is today.

One of Umberto’s favorite dishes to prepare, puttanesca penna pasta In a time of uncertainty of where one was going, what you might find there, how you could get there is where our story begins. Umberto Barbieri left Italy in search of adventure and opportunity to a growing place in the world, Asia. His first stop left him in Singapore to work as The executive chef in a highly regarded Singaporean restaurant. After working in Singapore for a year Umberto being so close to Thailand and reading books and hearing stories from friends about Thailand, he decided to try his luck at traveling to Southern Thailand and seeing what this alluring and mystical place held. Arriving in Ao Nang he was (as most of us are) overwhelmed with the beauty and dramatic landscape which has made Krabi so famous. Arriving in AO nang 17 years ago, was a world of difference to what it is today, the town was only a tiny village with little to offer, so he made his way down to the pier and early booked a ticket to the famous Koh Phi Phi. As fate would have it though that day a storm rolled in and blocked the boat from leaving so feeling stranded in Ao nang Umberto decided to try out the local Italian cuisine. Arriving at the only restaurant he could find called Lavinia advertising “real Italian chef ” after the pizza arrived at the table and feeling the hot breeze in the air mixed with the scents of home, Umberto knew he had to ask about the sign in the window. So like any eager backpacker would do he asked to talk with the owner and jokingly asked the owner “I am a chef from Italy, do you need any help here” little did he know that sentence would change his life entirely. The owner took only a second to respond, saying quickly replied “YES”. They formed an understanding and a contract for their working relationship and the next day Umberto was the chef of Lavinia. After 2 years of working for Lavinia and learning more about Ao Nang and Krabi, Umberto decided it was time to try to work for himself, so he opened his own Italian restaurant ‘Lo Spuntino’. A small restaurant of only 8 tabes the restaurant which was simple enough, yet gave Umberto the ability to learn really what it

44

would take to operator an Italian restaurant in Thailand, where to source products, how to deal with staff, menu options available in the area and much more. The restaurant was opened in August 2004 and had a successful launching as it was the only Italian restaurant with an actual Italian chef. But as fate would have it later that year just as the high season was getting under way The Indian Ocean was rocked by the infamous Boxer day Tsunami. This tsunami which originated from Indonesia ripped through the entire Western coast of Thailand, killing thousands and causing millions of dollars in property damage. The country was his hard and so were it’s many entrepreneurs as the global tourist market coming to Thailand, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Malaysia basically died out in a matter of months after the incident. Torn by the situation of no patrons visiting Lo Spuntino Umberto was unsure to stay in Ao nang, or to move to another town to set up a new restaurant. Luckily a frequent customer and friend Soony who loved dining at Umberto’s restaurant who also owned a Thai restaurant named ‘Sala Bua’ offered that they team up and work together creating a fusion restaurant. and so Sala Bua & Lo Spuntino was born, the first fusion cuisine restaurant in Ao nang came to life. Soon after their opening the pair of owners had the great opportunity to move their growing restaurant to one of the coveted restaurant locations on the Ao nang seafood street. This brought more foot traffic to

cliental come for reservations from all over Krabi. Recently channel 7 news from Bangkok features his restaurant in a feature on great restaurants in Thailand which was nationally televised. The local community of Krabi know where to get the best Italian food in town and online his restaurant receives daily 5 star reviews on trip advisor, but don’t take our word for it, go taste the stunning dishes yourself.

Ao nang and Thailand have opened doors to thousands of expatriates traveling here from all around the globe to work, grow and evolve in many ways. It’s a massive accomplishment for anyone willing to travel to this sacred place and able to start a business or endeavour on their own.

Burrata and Parma Ham, perfect with some white wine their delicious and eventful cuisine growing the word of mouth popularity and online reviews. Sala Bua & Lo Spuntino was a great restaurant, very popular among expats in the town as well as tourists, the team of staff was loyal and dedicated to their craft, everything was perfect but the owners both wanted a change. The restaurant had been running successfully for 7 years and both owners wanted to try a new venture in life. Soony pursued a career in villa management taking care of a number of his own private luxury pool villas, and Umberto was off at his new restaurant; The Red Devil, located just a short 3 kilometres from Ao nang beach. The Red Devil was of course featuring traditional Italian cooking but had a more intimate and cosy feel to it, Red Devil was highly regarded trip advisor and among the local community as Umberto had already built a name for himself among locals in Krabi. 2 yeas after opening The Red Devil a new opportunity was presented to Umberto, to open a new restaurant in a more coveted and busier area of Ao Nang. Selling The Red Devil, Umberto was now onto his next adventure. Opening Umberto’s Italian Cuisines 3 years ago Umberto is proud to call this restaurant his home and happy to know that over half of his current staff are the same people who worked with him at the original Sala Bua and Lo Spuntino over 10 years ago. Its an accomplishment to have the same people care and support you after all this time. Currently Umberto’s Italian Cuisine serves the best Italian food Krabi has to offer and his current

Since Umberto opened his first restaurant some 20 years ago he has never looked back, no matter if he has a bad month, his head chef quits in the middle of a busy night, a string of bad reviews online or issues with rent, marketing and where he will get the money to pay his staff, he has never let their hindrances get in his way. There has always been only the way through and although this story is similar to others in the world, one message connects all stories of success, never give up, because when you do you’re only admitting defeat instead of continuing to fight on for your name, your team and yourself. Umberto’s Italian Cuisine is open daily from 11am 11pm and is located on Klong Heang Road in the ground floor of The Alisea Boutique Hotel.

New means to keep you looking good A procedure has taken off in Thailand and it’s helping an ageing population maintain their tight soft skin just the way they want, all the while it’s not invasive or involving a process of injecting any chemicals into ones body, it’s called Fat grafting or fat transfer. Grace Clinic in Krabi town is leading their new technologies development among the Krabi population.

at Transfer is a natural solution to restore subtle volume and shape, as well as rejuvenate certain areas of your body. Fat is taken from your body fat via liposuction and transferred to areas of the body where volume is needed. If you’re looking for a natural and subtle volume enhancement. You can add a natural and subtle plump to your breast and buttocks by means of fat transfer. In addition, Fat Transfer procedures to the Face and Hands plump and revitalise areas of the body that suffer heavy from fat loss as we age. the medical team at Grace Clinic has performed many hundreds of procedures to date and therefore can guarantee utmost care and professionalism when it comes to caring for your body. Fat Grafts or Fat transfer can be done on the following areas of the body: • Breasts • Buttocks • Face • Hands Fat Transfer, also known as Fat Grafting or Fat Injections is a natural, minimally invasive treatment for those seeking breast/buttock augmentation or replacing age-related lost volume and subtly smoothing out wrinkles. Fat is removed from various parts of the body where there is a substantial amount, such as the thighs, abdomen and/or buttocks. The fat is then centrifuged, or purified, to separate the healthy fat cells from the damaged ones, and injected into another area of the body that is lacking in volume. Fat Transfer, as a volume enhancing treatment, has been around for several years, but it is the skills and expertise of the Doctor that allow for long-lasting, youthful results. Fat Transfer to the Face and Hands Our face and hands are the first things people see and present a significant challenge for anyone trying to prevent fat loss which can leave our faces looking sunken and aged, while our hands look brittle with protruding veins, bones and tendons. Ageing has its effects on everyone’s skin, and unfortunately due to nature’s way of tell us that we are advancing in years, skin, all over your body, can lose its volume and become loose and relaxed. Medical and scientific advancements have paved the way for natural alternatives to synthetic fillers and implant procedures. When compared to fillers and implants, the results of Fat Grafting last 10 times longer

48

www.krabi-magazine.com

Keep the face and body you know and love so much for year to come, heathily and safely Using your own fat to smooth out wrinkles and plump up the skin with our Fat Transfer procedures is a more natural and now increasingly popular alternative to dermal fillers. Fat Transfer procedures can not only smooth out wrinkles and lines but can add volume to sunken cheeks, with an indirect boosting effect on the texture and tone of the skin. As women and men seek out the latest in cosmetic treatments, more and more patients are choosing Fat Transfer procedures as their treatment of choice over temporary dermal fillers. With one procedure, you remove the need for all those regular top-ups, leaving you to enjoy superior and natural-looking results for many years. Furthermore the stem cell technology involved – stem cells are naturally present in fat – boosts the rejuvenating effect of the treatment, helping you to look glowing and more even in tone.

– up to 10 years, and because the source of the ‘organic filler’ is already in your body, it is perfectly well tolerated in the long term.

Advantages of Fat Grafting and Fat Transfers: • More economical than synthetic fillers in the long-term. • Not only does the Fat Graft result in increased subtle volume and

December I 2017

‘plumpness’, but also improved skin texture and quality due to the stem cells contained in the fat. • The results can bring back 5-10 years on the treated areas. • Natural-looking results • Minimal downtime – return home the same day and just a couple of days downtime for many of the procedures • Only local anaesthetic is necessary

Grace Clinic is pioneering their new technology in Krabi and leading it’s access and growth among the tourists and locals alike. If you are interested in getting more information about this procedure please visit their clinic in krabi town at:

Why open a vegetarian Restaurant in Ao Nang? A family story 50

www.krabi-magazine.com

51 December I 2017

W

ell this is the most asked question that we get from people when inquiring about us. And the simple answer is: because there was a need for it. How do we know? Because we ourselves being vegetarians experienced the necessity to have one. And here is where we can tell you about our story and who we are… We are a half Canadian and half Chilean family. Me (Sebastian), and my wife (Lila), got married in Chile in 2005, and then started our journey, going first to Canada and having 3 of our babies: Shyama a girl, then Chandra a boy and Kalavati a girl. Then, when our baby Kalavati was just born, in 2010, we decided to move to India as we wanted to do some studies and live in a Hare Krishna community. Later we had our fourth child, Subal. From India we would come every year on Holydays to Krabi for few weeks. And then was when we had our first experience as vegetarians that there was a need for a vegetarian

restaurant in Ao Nang. At that time, we either had to go every day to Krabi town for food or cook in our rooms in a rice cooker. Not the most convenient thing to do as you can imagine. And why not eat some vegetarian option from any restaurant? Well usually for many of us strict vegetarians, eating in a place where they are cooking meat and using non vegetarian sauces is not so appealing, therefore we prefer to eat at a vegetarian place better. Hence, after coming for 5 years every summer to Ao Nang, and hearing from our friends here that there were many people under a similar difficulty, we decided that we should start something here. Moreover, we already had some experience from before, having a successful restaurant in Chile for 4 years. And that’s how we

became determined to the idea of starting a vegetarian restaurant here in Ao Nang. Ok, then the next question is, why be a vegetarian in the first place? Well to be honest there are many reasons why someone would change his/her diet to a vegetarian one, and here I will provide you with some reasons that may be interesting for the reader: 1. It makes economic sense: A vegetarian diet is not only good for one’s personal health; it’s also good for any nation’s economy. Five dietrelated chronic diseases cost the U.S.

economy a staggering $1 trillion each year! This is an estimate of direct medical costs and the indirect impact of productivity losses due to illness and premature death associated with chronic heart disease and stroke, obesity, cancer, diabetes, and osteoporosis. Dietrelated diseases are costly and preventable, so the message is clear. Eat healthier now or pay later for increased health care costs. 2. Help end World Hunger: On average, 40% of global grain production is used to feed livestock, although in richer countries the proportion of grain used for animal feed is around 70%. “If all food crops grown globally were fed directly to humans instead of animals, around 70% more food would be added to the world’s supply, which would be enough to feed 4 billion additional people. Rather than cycle crops through livestock, that sudden surplus alone would

be enough food to feed over half the humans on earth, let alone the 795 million who face hunger every day.” 3. Is good for your Health: Vegetarian diets tend to be naturally lower in saturated fat and cholesterol and have a higher intake of plant nutrients than most meat-based diets. Vegetarians have been shown to have a 24% lower risk of dying of heart disease than non-vegetarians. Also there is evidence that vegetarians tend to have a lower overall rate of cancer compared to the general population. Furthermore, flesh foods can harbour contaminants such as hormones, herbicides and pesticides, and antibiotics. As these toxins are all fat-soluble, they concentrate in the fatty flesh of the animals. Not to mention the viruses, bacteria and parasites such as salmonella, trichinella and other worms, and toxoplasmosis parasites.

A 12-year Oxford study published in the British Medical Journal found that vegetarians outlive meat eaters by six years. Plant-based diets are generally rich in fiber, phytonutrients, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, which in turn strengthens the immune system and slows down the aging process. Additionally, a vegetarian diet can prevent and reverse certain chronic diseases so it makes sense that vegetarians have a longer life span! 4. Have compassion for animals: Animals on today’s factory farms have no legal protection from cruelty that would be illegal if it were inflicted on dogs or cats. Yet farmed animals are no less intelligent or capable of feeling pain than are the dogs and cats we cherish as companions. A vegetarian lifestyle awakens our spirit of compassion and guides us towards a kinder, gentler society in

53 December I 2017

which we exercise a moral choice to protect animals, not exploit them. 5. The spiritual reason: For those that are following the spiritual path, a diet is something that reflects your state of awareness, as unnecessary violence is not a helper in the uplifting of our consciousness. Therefore, many saints and renowned philosophers advocate for a vegetarian diet, like: Buddha, Saint Francis of Assisi, Pythagoras, Socrates, Leonardo Da Vinci, Isaac Newton, Einstein, Tesla and many others. Indeed, the concept that God has created this world for our pleasure is erroneous and the source of most of our current problems in the modern world. This world was created

for the service of God, and we are part of it, with higher power and therefore higher responsibilities to care for the rest of the creation, or our world. Not to exploit it for our own sense gratification. And taking care, of our perhaps less intelligent little brothers animals, is our duty as responsible humans. It doesn’t matter from which religion we belong to; this is just simple common sense. God doesn’t like to see humans exploiting animals because they are less intelligent, or cannot communicate their thoughts. And I am certain that there is no religion or spiritual path that would oppose a vegetarian diet. Therefore, a diet free from animal products is the most suitable for a merciful and responsible human being.

Finally, I must say that due to the influence of internet, and its overwhelming source of information, more and more people are becoming aware of the benefits of the vegetarian lifestyle, and thus is a growing trend in our modern world. Of course this is a good thing for my business, but more importantly, is a good thing for the whole world, and we invite all of you to try it and discover by yourself the benefits of it, and how it feels to be part of the solution to many of the problems of our current world.

THE SUNSET ISLAND

Koh Lanta is made up of 2 main islands, Koh Lanta Noi and Koh Lanta Yai, Koh Lanta Noi is the smaller and less developed of the two but offers some special adventures for a certain traveler. Koh Lanta Yai is fully loaded with resorts, restaurats, activites such as kayaking, islands hoping, scuba diving companies and more.

Welcome to Koh Lanta

Saladin is the main township located in the north of Koh Lanta Yai, it is home to the majority of the islands banks, restaurants, cafes and general shopping areas. Saladan is also home to a number of stilted houses and businesses which extend out into the ocean on the Northern most edges of town. Each shop is different in it’s

own right but they all have the same relaxed feeling much of the island is famous for. There are a number of other regions all over the island though and each has it’s one little charm to offer, and truth be told a great way to see the island is to rent a motorbike or car and just go North to South, it’s cheap, fun and offers

numerous opportunities to stop and explore at your own leisure. To the South of Koh Lanta is the famous Lighthouse which features a nature walking trail, 2 beaches and one of the best vantage points for dramatic cliff photography on the island. So what are you waiting for, get going and explore this not so small island.

UNPLUG IN

KOH JUM

K

oh Jum Island is still the quintessential destination in Krabi province if you are looking for authentic Thai village life and development that is still a small footprint.

Geography brought electricity to Koh Jum late in 2009 as the island was in the direct path of the new underwater electric cable connecting Koh Phi Phi to the mainland. So now that Koh Jum is plugged-in, has it lost its reputable character that has attracted intrepid travelers over the past couple of decades? We are pleased to report that Koh Jum is still as tranquil and laid back as it always has been. In fact, what is most noticeable are the lack of noisy generators at most of the islands resorts. Folks come to Koh Jum to tune out; the island’s nature and culture dominate the minimal tourist infrastructure. The existing resorts on Koh Jum all have their own family-run character, ranging from the backpackers paradise to luxurious beach villas..... Koh Pu Mountain is the dominant geological feature on the island at over 400 meters. It’s a great hike for the adventurous and a vital refuge of native habitat still harboring Asian Pied Hornbills and Burmese pythons. The three villages; Koh Pu, Ting Rai and Koh Jum are situated on the back side of the island, amongst the mangroves while the resorts are located

70

opposite, facing the open Andaman Sea. This division allows the villagers to remain authentic without a significant tourist infrastructure while the resorts are all located on the beaches. Koh Jum is predominately a large Muslim populated sub-district of Krabi, home to over 1,500 inhabitants. The locals of these villages engage mostly in fishing, rubber cultivation and the local crafts of cloth weaving and painting or ‘batik’ as it is known as here. While the north is mountainous, the south is comprised of dense jungle, cashew nut trees, rubber plantations, casuarinas and nipapalms. Since all the resorts face West, there are epic sunsets to be had all along the island. The renowned Koh Jum Lodge is an excellent place to stay for a few days, and has superb views to boot. Access to the island is by longtail taxi boats which leave from the mainland at the port town of Laem

Kruat. There is now a songthaew you can take direct from Krabi Town to Laem Kruat. During the high season most visitors come to Koh Jum using the Krabi-Koh Lanta ferry which stops at two locations on Koh Jum, both of which are offshore so local longtail boats will come from the island to pick up passengers.

www.krabi-magazine.com

71 December I 2017

The lack of any deep ports on the island keep the ferry boats out at sea and almost prevent large masses of tourists from overcrowding the island. Getting here is an adventure and this ends up defining the interesting community of resorts and visitors that have made this island their home and the place they return to year after year. Getting to Koh Jum can be very simple or a bit of a nightmare, it all depends on how much you know about it. This is where Krabi magazine can help, we recently took the trip to Koh Jum ourselves and have decided to share the adventure with all of our readers. There are 2 ways to get to Koh Jum- by passing ferry or longtail boat. There are ferries that leave from Koh Lanta at 8am and from Krabi at 11am, both ferries stop as they pass alongside Koh Jum and signal to longtail boats to come and pick up visitors to land ashore Koh Jum. Koh Phi Phi also has ferries which leave at 2pm and operate on the same principle as above. The second way to get to Koh Jum is to go to the port town of Laem Kruat, from where you can catch a longtail boat directly to Koh Jum- this was our favorite of the 2 methods of travel. If you are driving, it takes about one hour to get from Ao Nang to Laem Kruat. You just head to Tesco Lotus and then continue until you see the large overhead signs which tell you to turn right for “Koh Jam”. This road will lead to the small locality of Laem Kruat, where you will find a large pier with boats going to Koh Jum. If you don’t have transport of your own, you can always catch a blue and yellow “songthaew” - the local buses that have benches in the back. On the side of the “songthaew” will be written – Krabi, Bus Station, Tesco, Big C, Laem Kruat, they are frequent and easy to spot.

our 70thb fare and were taken by “taxi” (a battered old pickup truck) through the winding dirt track until we reached our destination resort. Give it a go and you will see a different side of Thailand from years gone by.

Well worth the experience.

These buses will leave from all of these locations at intervals throughout the day and will take you directly to the Laem Kruat pier. Now, the pier is a bit misleading. We waited at the end of the pier before realizing the longtail taxis were passing us by and docking at the mainland. Then we went back and followed our noses along past the shops until we saw a slipway with goods and people being unloaded. It was the second slipway we needed to get to “Moo Too”, the place on Koh Jum we were being collected from. If you know the name of the pier on Koh Jum you need to get to, just ask anyone in this area and they will direct you to the correct boat. We got on and soon were chugging along through the mangroves with a boat full of happy local Muslim women that looked as they hadn’t changed a bit since 1925. We arrived at Koh Jum just 45 minutes later, paid
