Assumption Regional Catholic school celebrated National Catholic Schools Week. The annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States, it starts the last Sunday in January and runs all week, January 31 – February 6. The theme for the National Catholic Schools Week is “Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service.” Assumption Regional Catholic School observed the annual celebration week with Masses, open houses and other activities for students, families, parishioners and community members. One of the many events that occurred at Assumption Regional Catholic School was a pep rally on February 3rd. All of the students and teachers were dressed in blue and white. The gym filled with students, teachers, parents, grandparents and siblings all there to see the pep rally. The basketball teams put on a demonstration of their phenomenal skills, and then the teachers played games against the students. A real crowd pleaser was the final game of toss the beanbag which the students won sending the room in to a loud roar of cheer! Through these events, the school focuses on the value Catholic education provides to young people and its contributions to our church, our communities and our nation.

The publishers of the Galloway Patriot, Chuck & Jaime Knutson were very honored and proud to receive an award from the VFW Post 9642 Honor Guard on behalf of the veteran’s organization they operate, the “Marine Corps Veterans Direct Action Team”. The award was presented for commitment to providing veteran and community services. If you are a veteran and would like to get involved, there are a number of veteran’s organizations in our area. If you are a Marine or Marine Corps veteran, the Marine Corps Veterans Direct Action Team works closely with the VFW Honor Guard to provide ceremonial military funeral services. Other opportunities to serve the community by helping in events, parades or official ceremonies are open. Visit MCVDirectActionTeam.US or the Absecon VFW’s Facebook page for more info. You can also email GallowayPatriot@gmail. com for more information. Your help and participation is necessary to provide these community services.

From The Desk of The Chief of Police Community Policing Programs Expand Im very excited to announce the Officer Phil interactive program to our elementary public and private schools here in Galloway Township this month. Its been over 15 years since there has been any orientation based law enforcement interaction for our youth in the school system. Ofc. Phil is a program supported by our local businesses that incorporates character actors in cooperation with Galloway Police Officers to put on a show for children in grades 1 through 4. They will learn about the fundamentals of safety, the importance of listening to parents, teachers, clergy, coaches and law enforcement and healthy ways to grow through a dynamic fun filled presentation. Each child will come home with a full activity book to further their learning through coloring and fun games and activities charts that you can use to help with household chores and responsibilities. I thank our local businesses and our schools for their cooperation in continuing to bridge the bond between law enforcement and our youth in positive educational ways! More to come in 2016...D.A.R.E returns to Galloway Township for grades 5 through 8 and some exciting demonstrations and seminars in cooperation with Greater Egg Harbor Regional at Absegami High School! Have a Happy and Safe St. Patrick’s Day Your Chief of Police, Donna Higbee

On February 19, 2016 from 6-10pm at Fred and Ethel’s Lantern Light Tavern the Oceanville Volunteer Fire Company held its Annual Beef and Beer. HEALTHY EATING We have all been there. It is late, and our stomach is growling and preventing us from falling asleep. However, we have heard over and over again that snacking before bedtime is bad (but so is having food cravings that are keeping you awake). Late night snacking has been blamed for causing nightmares, acid reflux, and packing on the pounds. There is some good news: you can satisfy those hunger pangs without those side effects depending on what you eat and how much you eat. Packing on the pounds? Snacking before going to sleep does not have to pack on the pounds. Foods are no more fattening when they are eaten at 10 pm than if they are eaten at 9 am. It is the total number of calories that you consume throughout the day that will add inches to your waistline. Experts recommend keeping your bedtime snack to less than 200 calories to avoid this. Blame it on the Hormones We have hormones in our body that signal when the body is full and when the body is hungry. They act in a see-saw fashion and counterbalance each other. Having a small snack can decrease the “hunger” hormone and increase the “full” hormone allowing you to get some zzz’s. Interestingly, a lack of sleep warps the way these hormones are released and increases your appetite for high-calorie and dense foods. In other words, sleep deprivation can contribute to weight gain. This is another reason to choose a healthy snack that can get you off to sleep. Bedtime Snack “No Nos” • Caffeine: Chocolate, sodas (even caffeine free drinks contain small amounts). As you get older, you may become more sensitive to the effects of caffeine. • Spicy or acidic foods: Can give you acid reflux and keep you awake • Fatty foods or high protein foods: Take a significant amount of energy to digest, can make you feel full and uncomfortable, and can give you acid reflux • High sugar or simple carbohydrate: Foods like cookies and candy can give you a sugar high and make you feel wired. This can then be followed by a “let down” where you feel hungry shortly after. • Preserved and smoked meats (ham, bacon, sausages): Contain high levels of tyramine, an amino acid, which causes the brain to release norepinephrine, a stimulant Minerals and vitamins There are a number of minerals and vitamins that are necessary for the complex cycles of sleep that involve melatonin and serotonin: Vitamin B6, tryptophan, calcium, magnesium, and potassium. By snacking on items rich in these nutrients, not only can you satisfy your munchies but you may also be able to get a better night of sleep. What does bedtime snacking have to do with breakfast? Break the fast, or in other words eat your breakfast. Skipping breakfast has been shown to result in poor eating choices later in the day and close to bedtime. Heavy late night snacks may make it more likely that you will skip breakfast and repeat the nighttime binge. Start off with: Whole grain crackers Whole grain bread Oatmeal Cottage cheese Lowfat yogurt Add: Cheese Peanut butter Bananas Eggs Almonds and seeds Whatever food you choose, keep the portion small and low in calories. Too much of any type of food can interfere with sleep by making you uncomfortable, causing acid reflux, weight gain, or even choking. Consider an “Elvis Sandwich” with peanut butter and bananas on whole wheat bread for a yummy treat (but avoid the bacon). A small glass of warm milk to accompany the snack can be the perfect night cap.

GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP GREEN BUSINESS RECOGNITION PROGRAM

Vietnam Veteran’s Appreciation A Salute to Our Vietnam Heroes

Has your business or office building made changes that help to make it greener? Are you mindful of waste re-duction and energy efficiency? Have you taken steps to conserve water? Do you purchase products made from recycled materials and purchase locally whenever possible? If you answered “YES” to most or all of these questions, you may qualify for GREEN BUSINESS RECOGNITION through the Galloway Township Office of Sustainability and Go Green Galloway. The Galloway Township Office of Sustainability and Go Green Galloway recently announced that TILTON FITNESS had accumulated enough points on our Green Business Assessment Checklist to be designated as a GREEN BUSINESS. Tilton Fitness received a sticker to display on their front window, a press release about their achievement, and they will be added to the list of Green Businesses on the Go Green Galloway page of the Township website. The Green Business Assessment is a checklist of items that indicate whether or not a local business or institution is on the path to sustainability. The checklist has actions that add up to 70 points in various areas of sustainability; including waste prevention, purchas-ing, energy conservation, water conservation, stormwater management, landscaping and transportation/ air quality. A business must have at least 35 points to qualify as a green business. Why should businesses GO GREEN? There are many reasons; among them: 1) Green actions create a healthier workplace. 2) There are tax incentives for improving appliance & energy efficiency. 3) Consumers often prefer to purchase products from sustainable businesses. 4) There are significant cost savings to minimizing and reducing waste. Galloway Township is Silver Certified by the Sustainable Jersey Program. Green businesses help to further our goal to create a more health and sustainable Township. PLEASE contact me for a copy of the Green Business Assessment! We would be happy to add your business or office to the growing list of green businesses in Galloway! Barbara Fiedler, Galloway’s Chief Sustainability Officer, at bfiedler@gtnj.org.
