Don Purdy - continued; The RDI project alone has brought hundreds of jobs to Galloway Township. The market has caused a significant number of job losses in the area but our hope is with every finished project more local residents will find employment. Galloway Township is in a good budget position for 2016. We hope that the Galloway Township School Board, Greater Egg Harbor Regional School Board and Atlantic County will keep their taxes flat. I look forward to an exciting and positive 2016.

Chuck Knutson - continued; I would like to ask that everyone in our community take some time in 2016 to make our township even better. You can volunteer to help with one of the many events planned for 2016 like the Magnus Mud Run or the 4th of July Parade. There will be other big events like National Night Out, the Halloween events or the Galloway Township Summer Camp. Volunteers are always needed. You can also help at the Galloway Senior Center or help keep the community clean. We all need to stop thinking that someone else will do it and do it ourselves. Just take a few minutes to make sure your street is free of trash. If your neighbors see you doing it, chances are they will help as well. There are so many people in our community that help. I want to single out a few that are always willing to help. The Coppola family that has owned and operated Historic Smithville Village for years. The Coppola family helps with everything. I am always impressed by how much help they give the community. Galloway Township Deputy Mayor Tony Coppola, is at virtually every event and on countless committees. He works tirelessly to make our community a better place to live. Jim and Rebecca Bozarth have been extremely generous by providing facilities at which we can better prepare our sons and daughters that have chosen to join the military prior to their leaving for Boot Camp. Our new Police Chief Donna Higbee and Township Manager Susan Jacobucci both have a great commitment to the community and have been highly visible as well as helping at many events. The Galloway Fire Department is always helping out. Galloway Public Works helps at many events. The Cicarelli family at Goodfellows restaurant help out with food and other donations. There are a number of people I could point out. I want you all to know how grateful we are for your help and commitment to making Galloway an even better, stronger, family community. Happy New Year and we wish you the very best in 2016.

What began in 1992 with a trailer load of wreaths, decorated by volunteers and laid at the graves of fallen soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery, has now become a national organization with over 900 participating locations. The Wreaths Across America mission is “Remember, Honor, and Teach”. The wreaths across America events coordinated by the Absecon VFW Post 9462 included two wreath-laying ceremonies on Saturday December 12, 2015 in Absecon. This is one of the ways to spread the message about the importance of remembering our fallen heroes, honoring those who serve, and teaching our children about the sacrifices made by veterans and their families to preserve our freedoms. Absecon Mayor John Armstrong, The VFW Honor Guard, Rolling Thunder NJ Chapter and veterans’ families, attended a short ceremony at two locations led by the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. Wreaths were laid, prayers given, taps played and the gun salute was carried out in honor of the fallen veterans.

Dr. Nina Radcliff Board Certified Anesthesiologist, a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, and licensed to practice medicine in California, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey

Myths, Tall-Tales, and (Un)truths “Rain rain go away. Come again another day.” I have some important edits to this nursery rhyme. First, it may be necessary to substitute “snow snow,” “hail hail,” “sleet sleet,” and “cold cold” for rain. Second, I would like to make a special request that it does not return until next year. Like most of the East Coast, I am ready for spring! December is a winter wonderland but by the time January rolls around, I am not alone when I say “enough already!” It’s time to thaw. Dr. Nina’s What You Need to Know: Busting Cold Weather Myths Myth: Cold air makes you sick. Cold weather does not cause you to “catch a cold;” but it makes it easier to spread germs. In fact, germs grow best when it is warm. However, when it is cold outside, we tend to stay indoors and remain in close contact. This makes it easier to transmit germs. Additionally, research has shown that viruses spread more easily through dry air. Not only is there less humidity outdoors, but central heating dries the indoors. Myth: I should not exercise in the cold. Do not store away your running shoes. Studies have shown that race times are actually faster and as a result you can burn more calories in less time. Additionally, exercising boosts your endorphins which can help fight off those winter blues. But before taking a jog make sure that you do a warm up first and you are properly dressed for the elements. Myth and Truth: Allergies go away in the winter If you suffer from indoor allergens, they may get worse. The cold weather makes it more likely that your pets will stay indoors, that you will shut those windows and not get fresh air, and that certain molds will thrive. However, if you suffer from pollen allergies, then your symptoms will improve. Myth: I skip the sunscreen in the winter Don’t let the freezing cold fool you! During the winter months, we are closer to the sun and are exposed to more harmful rays. Additionally, ice and snow are great at reflecting harmful ultraviolet rays. This means you get a double dose of exposure (from the sun and then again from the reflection off the ground). So don’t forget to apply that sunscreen. Myth: Dry skin just an annoyance When skin becomes dry, it can result in small cracks that serve as passageways for germs to enter the body. To avoid this, experts recommend moisturizing at least twice a day—after showering and before bedtime. Because our hands are more prone to drying and cracks, keep lotion in your bag or at your desk, in the car and next to the soap in the bathroom so you can moisturize throughout the day. Myth: Eating chicken soup helps you fight off that cold. Chicken soup may not only be good for your soul, but also your cold. Studies have shown that chicken soup stimulates your immune system, specifically, your white blood cells. Additionally, the warmth of the soup can help reduce sinus and throat pain. Myth: Cold temps cause hair loss Mother nature gave us hair to keep us warm. Thus, it makes sense that during the winter months, we hold onto our hair more tightly. Not convinced? Look at your pet dog Kujo to see how thick his fur gets in the winter. Studies have also shown that we have the greatest hair loss in the summer.

Like most of us, I am ready to “spring forward.” In December I was singing the chorus “Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow;” but my tune has changed and I am saying au revoir and adios to the cold. And I am not alone in this sentiment. There was just a knock at my door. It was the snowman begging to come in and get warm.

On Saturday, December 12, 2015 St. Elizabeth Ann Seton held its second annual Santa’s Christmas Cookie Walk. The turnout was so fantastic that the church opened its doors 45 minutes ahead of schedule to the many in search of the perfect box of homemade holiday cookies. The Santa’s Christmas Cookie walk workers were hard at work until all the cookies were gone. Carol Johnson, Marian Cicarelli, Pastor Perry Cherubini and the rest of the volunteers produced a wonderful second Santa’s Christmas Cookie Walk. Carol Johnson said a special thank you to John Cicarelli from W.L. Goodfellows for baking 200lbs of cookies and to Galloway’s Deputy Mayor Tony Coppola from the Smithville Inn who baked another 25lbs of cookies to help make the day great.

On Saturday, December 5, 2015, Egg Harbor City held their Annual Tree Lighting at 6pm. Chamber of Commerce’s, Jim Schroeder, started the festivities off by announcing Reverend Kathleen of Zion Lutheran Church who gave the invocation. Mayor Jiampetti welcomed everyone and asked that we keep our Troops and Veterans in our prayers this holiday season. There was music, sing-along, treats for the children, and a visit from Santa arriving on a fire truck. Lovely performances by Pilgrim Academy Bell Ringers rang us into the spirit of Christmas with many holiday tunes, Cedar Creek High School had two soloist sing Christmas tunes that got the children dancing in their spots and a special appearance by “Elvis” made the musical spirit of Christmas come alive on Philadelphia Avenue in Egg Harbor City.

Absegami High School’s Performing Arts Department spread some holiday cheer to the community with the school’s second joint Holiday Spectacular on Thursday, December 17th. The holiday spectacular features the combined talents of students in the band, choir, dance, drama, film and media department as well as the Galloway Township Middle School Choir. Nearly 100 students performed in this year’s second annual holiday spectacular. The event was created in 2014 to bring together all of the performing arts during the holiday season and offer the community something wonderful. Besides celebrating the holiday, this upbeat, high-energy show helps those who need it most this time of the year. Chip Garrison, director, said “We want to get the children involved in something festive for the holidays, but also want to give back to the community and do something charitable”. The public was asked for a $5 donation, and proceeds from the concession stand sales and raffles, which was to be donated to the Atlantic City Rescue Mission. This show was a great way to bring the community and students together for a truly Holiday Spectacular from the Absegami High School’s Performing Arts Department.
