AT706 Supervised Ministry

APPLIED THEOLOGY Required Courses

This course refers to field-based training in a local church with ministry opportunities in a congregation under the supervision of experienced mentor(s). No credit is given for meeting this requirement. The Dean of Students has more complete information on the requirements of this supervised ministry internship.

AT502 Introduction to Homiletics, Theology, and Structure 3 Credit Hours This course introduces the Biblical basis for preaching and the fundamentals of expository preaching. Students will gain experience in classic elements of sermon construction along with fundamentals of persuasion and pulpit delivery.

AT602 Preaching Practicum 1 - Basics of Biblical Preaching 1 Credit Hour

This introduction to Christian Education presents the Biblical and philosophical foundation for CE in the local church with attention to the unique dimensions of covenantal thinking that defines a Reformed philosophy of education. The course also surveys teaching and learning methodologies in the basic dimensions of educational ministry.

This introductory course focuses on the basics of Biblical preaching. AT604 Preaching Practicum 2 - Preaching from the New Testament 1 Credit Hour

AT609 Introduction to Urban Church Planting 3 Credit Hours

This practicum will require the student to preach a sermon based upon exegetical work in the Greek New Testament. Prerequisites: AT502 and either NT612 or NT614.

The course is designed to give students an experiential introduction to the ministry of church planting and urban missiology. The emphasis will be on equipping students with the principles, strategies, and practice needed for starting and developing Gospel-centered, city-positive, reproducing churches that seek the flourishing of society. Utilizing a unique immersive environment, the student will learn, in very practical ways, how to exegete a community, and ask and identify pertinent details that will help develop a Biblical vision for ministry in an urban context.

AT608 Ministry and the Church 3 Credit Hours This course covers the major aspects of ministry in the local church. It encompasses the following features of ministry: 1) Church Polity - covers the basic elements of church government structures; 2) Philosophy of Ministry and Christian Education presents the Biblical and philosophical foundation for Christian Education in the local church with attention to the unique dimensions of covenantal thinking that defines a Reformed philosophy of education; 3) Call to Ministry - examines the scriptural and practical aspects involved in a call to ministry.

AT702 Preaching Practicum 3 - Preaching from the Old Testament 1 Credit Hour

CC500 Homer and Vergil 3 Credit Hours This course begins with the earliest written epic of Gilgamish and then focuses on the foundational writings of Greece and Rome through the epic poetry that called the ancient city (polis) into being. Epic is understood as the master genre constituted of tragedy and comedy, the sorrow and joy that are the fundamental gestures of the soul. Together these genres make the myths that defined the Hellenistic world into which the gospel was first proclaimed. If we are to understand the Bible historically as well as grammatically, we must master the defining texts of the Hellenistic world. This class will have directed readings in the Theogony of Hesiod, the Iliad and Odyssey of Homer, and the Aeneid of Vergil.

This practicum will presuppose completion of at least one Old Testament Hebrew exegesis course and will require students to prepare and deliver a sermon based upon exegetical work in the Hebrew Old Testament. Prerequisites: AT502 and OT712. AT704 Worship 3 Credit Hours This course covers the Biblical basis for worship, the practical side of congregational worship (both traditional and contemporary), and the minister’s personal worship and devotional life. Special attention will be given to the personal use of the means of grace
