Page 1

W E L C O M E Dear Friends, Welcome to Kirkland Performance Center’s Annual Affair for the Arts Gala & Auction. I’m delighted that you’re able to join us for this evening’s festivities as we celebrate and promote the performing arts on the Eastside. It is a profound honor for me to serve KPC and its constituents as the Executive Director and I’m excited about the great things in store for us this season. One of the many memorable moments of the evening will be acknowledging Geoffrey Castle as the 2015 Champion of the Arts. Another one of our evening’s highlights is the opportunity for all of us to further support KPC through our Raise the Paddle pledge. Our thanks go out to our amazing team of board members, staff, volunteers, and friends of the theater who worked tirelessly to create this evening. As you peruse the catalog, you’ll find an amazing array of exciting opportunities; we thank all of the individuals and businesses who have contributed to this event. We are grateful to each and every one of you who have contributed to our successes! Kind regards, Jeff Lockhart Executive Director

Electric violinist, producer, and composer Geoffrey Castle came to Kirkland in 1999. Already an accomplished violinist and bandleader, with years of experience in Broadway show productions and off-Broadway independent staging, it was only fitting that Geoffrey and Kirkland Performance Center (KPC) would find each other and develop a relationship that would yield many joyous performances over the last decade. A strong supporter of the arts and arts education, Geoffrey Castle has been involved in the Music Matters initiative and has performed at multiple fundraisers all over the Northwest to raise money and awareness for the performing arts. As an ambassador for the arts, Geoffrey travels the country and internationally, performing in schools to inspire future generations to believe in themselves and the transforming power of the arts and the discipline they require. His annual productions at KPC have become local traditions, especially his Celtic Christmas Celebration concerts which sell out the theater every year. This year, Geoffrey returns for his 8th Annual Christmas Celebration, and his 11th Annual St. Patrick’s Celebration, with two new CDs inspired by his years of making music at KPC. We are truly and deeply grateful for the many ways in which Geoffrey Castle has contributed to the vitality of both KPC and arts education. He is a Champion of the Arts!

Our Mission: KPC enriches, educates, and entertains through performances that ignite the imagination and connect audiences and artists. The story of our theater is one of an entire community coming together to support the performing arts. In the early 1990s, a group of local residents shared a dream of creating a vibrant space for the performing arts to thrive. At that time, as is true today, there was no similar professional performance space on the Eastside that was suitable for national and international touring artists and theater companies. This small group of citizens literally collected pennies to do what was considered by many to be “the impossible.” Over the next eight years, pennies turned into pledges of all sizes from people of all backgrounds and ages who believed in the dream of building a world-class performing arts center in downtown Kirkland. By 1998, the impossible had become a reality, and KPC opened the doors on a beautiful, brand new 400-seat theater. Today, KPC offers more than 100 live performances each year, attended by more than 70,000 patrons who come to us from across the Pacific Northwest. We are able to offer the kind of world-class performances normally reserved for the nation’s largest cities, making Kirkland and East King County richer and more vibrant places to live and work. We search the world to identify and bring great artists to our stage, for performances that include music of all genres, theater, comedy, dance, and much more. Since opening our doors a decade and a half ago, we have welcomed more than 1,000,000 patrons, performers and guests from around the Puget Sound Region, and around the world. Kirkland Performance Center is the premiere intimate performing arts venue on Seattle’s Eastside where audiences of all ages can experience a variety of emerging artists and seasoned world class performers in a VIP setting.

Raise the Paddle: Community Engagement and Outreach at Kirkland Performance Center Kirkland Performance Center has always been centered around serving the Eastside community. From the very beginning, those who started our theater in the early 1990’s grew the heart and soul of KPC from and for the community. Thus far in 2015, KPC has served over 14,000 audience members who have supported both StoryBook Theater performances and Studio East teen summer musicals. More than 50 high school students had the opportunity to perform, play music, or act as a technical theater assistant on KPC’s stage, exposing many to their first time working in a professional theater. KPC is also thrilled to present multiple Arangetrams (Indian classical dance recitals) throughout the year with over 2,800 community members in attendance. Combined with the additional recitals, school plays, and graduations, KPC sees close to 8,000 audience members coming together to support various schools, programs, and cultural groups. We want to continue to support the incredible programming that this community wants to come together for. With your help and with the funds raised at this event we can continue to support these groups with better technological and staffing support. KPC can also expand into helping local businesses meet their conference and meeting space needs. Please raise your paddle for KPC’s Community Engagement and Outreach programs. KPC would love to share our impressive professionalism and technical caliber to the entire Eastside and beyond. This is all very possible with your donations and your continued belief in this community that we serve. THANK YOU!

Tonight you and your guests will have the opportunity to bid for your dessert. We have received many wonderful desserts for you to choose from, but exactly which dessert will be up to you and your table guests and how high you all bid! On your table you will find a sheet where you and your table guests can each place a bid using your bidder number. Simply write in your bidder number and your bid amount. All of the bids from your table will be tallied. The total will be compared with the totals from the other tables in the room. When the dash begins, the highest bidding table will be called to come and make their dessert selection first, then the next highest bidding table will be called to make their selection and so on… Beware! Tables will be called rapidly and your competition will physically dash for their dessert and may steal your favorite choice from under you, so listen carefully for your table number and make your selection quickly -- your table is counting on you!

Thank you to Hoffman’s Bakery for graciously donating all of tonight’s desserts!

24 EDWARD CURTIS CONTEMPORARY ARCHIVAL PIGMENT PRINT ON WATERCOLOR: “QAHATIKA GIRL” Born in 1868 near Whitewater, Wisconsin, Edward Sheriff Curtis became one of America’s finest photographers and ethnologists. When the Curtis family moved to Port Orchard, Washington in 1887, Edward’s gift for photography led him to an investigation of the Indians living on the Seattle waterfront. His portrait of Chief Seattle’s daughter, Princess Angeline, won Curtis the highest award in a photographic contest. Having become well-known for his work with the Indians, Curtis participated in the 1899 Harriman expedition to Alaska as one of two official photographers. It was clear to him that he was to record, with pen and camera, the life of the North American Indian. Edward S. Curtis devoted the next 30 years photographing and documenting over eighty tribes west of the Mississippi, from the Mexican border to northern Alaska. Considered by most collectors as the most famous and most desirable of all his works, "Quahatika Girl", a contemporary archival pigment print on watercolor paper, measures 30x40 inches (unframed). Also includes two coffee table books about Edward Curtis by Christopher Cordozo. Restrictions: Non-exchangeable.
