WINTER 2013

T

he history of The Kinkaid School is filled with honored and acclaimed graduates who have distinguished themselves as celebrated statesmen, business visionaries, cutting-edge doctors, sagacious attorneys, and the like. So one might be forgiven if the following names are not immediately recognizable as some of the School’s most distinguished alumni: James E. Anderson Jr., John Winston Booker, Fred Borsodi, William Stamps Farish Jr., Lamar Fleming III, A. Ryland Howard, Gaither L. Jones Jr., Dick Mayo Lykes, George Kidd Perkins, James Randall Harrell, and Philip Thomas Smith. Yet one would be hard-pressed to imagine a more distinguished group of former Kinkaidians or one more deserving of our thanks. For, you see, these 11 gentlemen were each former students who went on to serve their country in the military and who tragically, paid the “ultimate price.” You can find these names emblazoned on two rectangular bronze plaques situated on the brick wall of the Center for Student Life, Fine Arts and Administration near the shade trees and Snyder Fountain of The Lawrence Quadrangle. Anderson, Booker, Borsodi, Farish, Fleming, Howard, Jones, Lykes, and Perkins all

performed their military duty in World War II; Harrell and Smith in Vietnam. And even though both of those military operations seem part of the distant past, that fact does not mean that the students who currently walk the halls of Kinkaid have turned their backs on serving their country. In fact, since the “9/11” terrorist attacks, a number of Kinkaid alumni have dedicated themselves to military service. This past November, one of these recent alums, Lt. Hannah Rosenthal ’06, returned to the Kinkaid campus to visit friends and teachers and spend some time speaking to the current crop of upper school students. Just back stateside from a ground deployment in Afghanistan, Rosenthal had been living on a base of about 1,500 personnel, of which only about 30 were women. Moreover, she is acting as the commander of an all-male platoon specializing in army intelligence, surveillance and drone observations.
