English Language Proficiency Requirements

Students admitted to King’s must be proficient in written and spoken English. If English is not your first language, you must provide proof of your proficiency in listening, speaking, writing and reading English, with either an official test or approved ESL program. Waivers are available if you have studied in an English-speaking environment for 4 or more years. We reserve the right to ask any applicant to provide proof of English language proficiency.

Residence is more than just a convenient place to live—it’s a vibrant, supportive community committed to the values of diversity, respect and academic achievement.

Meal Plan Options

The King’s meal plan provides a broad and varied choice in menu

• Meal plans are available for both Residence and Off-Campus students

• The food services team at Aramark is committed to purchasing local. Café 54 features locally roasted fair trade coffee. In addition, we continually focus on purchashing local products throughout the year. Ingredients vary on the menu depending on seasonality and availability.

• The food services team is experienced in providing food options that are responsive to religious and/ or health-based dietary needs

• Residence is guaranteed to all new-toKing’s students who return their residence application by the guarantee deadline.

• Variety of Residence Room Options: Single rooms and double rooms in single gender and mixed gender units.

Upper Year Residence: In addition to the residence spaces for first year students, King’s offers furnished housing for upper year students in Epworth Place Houses and King’s Commons Apartments (meal plans optional).

• Inclusive Community: Residence is a diverse and inclusive community that welcomes international and local students, and provides a rich living experience for students of all backgrounds.

• Transitional supports: We know that first year is new experience for everyone. The Residence and Campus Life Office has a full year residence program curriculum in place to provide social activities, learning opportunities, and the support and resources you need at every stage of your first year experience.

• Clean, comfortable living areas with your safety and security in mind: Housekeeping, residence staff, and campus security work together to help you feel at home.

• Bus service: A free shuttle bus runs between King’s and the rest of campus throughout the class day. Bus stops for city buses (LTC) are located close to residence.

Making the Transition

King’s is committed to ensuring a smooth transition to your first year of studies at university. A wide variety of programming has been established to provide the resources you will need to be successful.

Summer Academic Orientation (SAO)

As of April 1, you can book your summer academic counselling appointment. These academic advising appointments will assist you in making important decisions about your first-year course selection, timetable and degree options/planning.

Be. Become. Belong.

The Be. Become. Belong. series is designed to make the transition to postsecondary as smooth as possible. Programming and resources are designed to ensure students have the necessary tools to help succeed in first year at King’s and beyond. The series is focused on preparing students to transition to university as well as providing support during first year beyond.

KAMP

The King’s Academic Mentoring Program (KAMP) pairs first-year students with an upper-year student who can help navigate the academic, social and spiritual transitions experienced in first year.

Campus Connections

The King’s Campus Connection program welcomes new first-year or first-time students to King’s. It connects students to each other as well as to campus, while educating them on the programs, services and supports available at King’s.

International Student Services

International Peer Guide Program The King’s International Peer Guide Program is designed to assist international and exchange students new to King’s with adjusting to university culture and Canadian life.

International Bridging Program This program provides an opportunity for international students to transition to life at King’s a week prior to Orientation Week.

Learning and Career Support

Learning Skills Services helps you to develop essential academic skills and study strategies which can assist you in maximizing your learning potential

Experienced Senior Tutors and Writing Consultants help you throughout the writing process.

Trained Peer Tutors assist students in:

• Business

• Economics

• Math

• Writing/Grammar

Academic Advising Working through your degree choices can be difficult. Academic advising provides guidance on academic program planning and long-term goals.

King’s Career Services can help with exploring your vocational goals by working with a career counselling professional, helping you access the extensive career resources at Western, and delving into a range of support strategies to help ensure successful job search strategies post-graduation.

International students also have the opportunity to work on campus through our International Work Experience Program (IWE). This program will provide a limited number of our international students with the opportunity to work on campus and gain valuable work experience.

The King’s Promise Program is a 4-year co-curricular program; which will guarantee students a meaningful job within 6 months of graduation. If this is not achieved, the student can return to King’s for one additional year of courses and campus-based support, tuition-free. Alongside your studies you will complete activities to support your career development, enhance pre-employment skills, gain tangible workplace experience, and engage in experiential learning. The King’s Promise Program will empower you to achieve your education, career, and life goals in line with King’s mission as a “Place to be and a Place to Become”
