April

April being the first month of Spring puts everyone in a good mood. Flowers are blooming and newborn animals are dotted around the fields. We get to eat lots of egg shaped chocolates to celebrate Easter, what’s not to love about April!

The Samaritans and the Amber Women’s Refuge are hosting a night of story, drama, monologues and music in the Set Theatre on the 11th of April at 8.00pm. Its a great cause and will surely be a great night’s entertainment. One of my favourite food stores in Kilkenny, the Gourmet store has recently opened up a cafe in their store. They really have the tastiest panninis, wraps and bagels in Kilkenny, as well as a feast of gourmet food products such as preserves, cheeses, cold meats and international delicacies. Now you can enjoy a cup of Ariosa coffee and your favourite pannini in their cafe and watch the world go by!

A Modest Affair

Even if you aren’t attached, you have at some stage thought about your wedding day. If you are engaged you are now certainly thinking about your big day, every day! One thing you can be assured of is that the Bride has a clear idea of what she wants in her dress. You will go through every wedding shop in your surrounding area and even further afield to find “that dress”. But what if you don’t find your dress down the conventional route, or maybe your financial status has changed alot? It could be that you are getting married abroad or maybe this is your second time around. Well read on for some ideas with a difference! I’ve often thought that when I get married it would be nice to

wear my own mother’s wedding dress(provided it fits me!) So I got to thinking what do you do when you can’t find that dress in a bridal shop or your budget just doesn’t stretch to it? Don’t feel pressure to conform to the conventional dress there are plenty of alternatives. The vintage dress is very popular at the moment and one shop here in Kilkenny, Shutterbug caters to customers who are looking for something a bit ‘different’ - whether you love the high glamour of sequins, or the more refined silk blouse and skirt combination. The team there love to style people up for any occasion so pop in for a consultation Monday - Saturday. Our model is wearing one of the lovely dresses on our cover (which was snapped up as soon as the picture appeared on Shutterbug’s facebook page!) Vintage dresses are both timeless and very affordable. You are guaranteed that you will have a dress that no other bride will have. If you are getting married in a registry office and then having your reception the day after you might want a less formal “wedding dress”. You could go for something like the pretty sequined dress we featured from TK Maxx. Its stunning looking and is so wearable again; something you can’t say for most wedding dresses. Its all about feeling comfortable and also feeling good about how you look. There is no rule that says you have to wear white, or cream on your wedding dress. There is a growing trend of brides choosing a

different colour for their wedding day. Peaches boutique have a stunning multi-purpose dress in a champagne colour that can be worn multiple ways and always looks stunning. And the great thing about it is that it can be cut to be a shorter dress to give it even more longevity. Head pieces are fast over taking the traditional veil and lets face it are less of a hassle. Rebekah Patterson based here in Kilkenny makes stunning unique pieces as worn by our model on the cover. They are delicate and oh so pretty!

So if you’re planning a wedding this year or next don’t be afraid to think outside of the box and try some of these beautiful dress ideas! If you see one thing this month... THE GIG

THE Film

THE play

Simone Felice, the American poet, novelist and musician, has lived through many tragedies but after emergency heart surgery in June 2010 and the birth of his daughter, he began to write with renewed clarity and sense of purpose. Until now, Felice has been best known as vocalist and drummer for The Felice Brothers and creator of New York based folk quartet The Duke & the King. A self-titled album, described as folk with a ghostly gospellike feel running throughout, will be his first solo offering. Simone Felice makes a triumphant return to Ireland with the release of the debut album on 2nd April 2012 (for Reveal Records), with his band of remarkable players, who together make up the rootsy and hauntingly harmonious Simone Felice Group (5 piece).

Jeff (Jason Segal) and Pat (Ed Helms) are brothers who don’t understand each other. They are both dreamers but Pat looks down on Jeff, as he’s still living at home with mom (Susan Sarandon) and has no clear future. Meanwhile, it’s Pat who’s daydreaming through his marriage with Linda (Judy Greer) when he discovers his wife out with another man. Their mother is frustrated with Jeff and asks Pat to motivate him, but she’s stuck in a bit of a rut herself. Over the course of one day each get a bit closer to happiness as they let go and go with their gut. The film is funny, but the heart of it is in the drama as those scenes are not rehearsed. The actors are encouraged to tap into their character to deliver a compelling performance. Susan Sarandon’s performance as a woman who’s suddenly revived emotionally, is inspiring.

Baglady is a rarely performed play from one of Ireland’s leading playwrights, Frank McGuinness. It has not been seen on an Irish stage for 25 years but its story is as relevant now as when it was first written. Baglady is a touching and revealing drama on how a woman becomes alienated from life: the eponymous Baglady of the title is a gentle woman whose life has been destroyed by shocking violence. The play explores the conditions and circumstances which caused her to become alienated from society and gradually reveals the terrifying events which shaped her life. The role of Baglady is played by seasoned stage and screen actor Maria McDermottroe. Her credits include appearances on the Abbey and Gaiety stages as well as roles in Veronica Guerin, Angela’s Ashes, and John Houston’s The Dead.

The Wedding Planner

Jacqueline Mullen is a wedding planner with an impressive track record. She has twenty five years of hotel management to her credit and an enviable reputation throughout

Ireland. It is this experience, together with an absolute commitment to perfection which

makes her an obvious choice when it comes to choosing a professional to plan your perfect wedding day.

If you were organising a civil ceremony in Ireland, where would you pick and why?

What key traits makes a good wedding planner? Experience in the hospitality industry is essential. By knowing the food and beverage industry you can put suggestions to the bride and groom and not just rely on their ideas. What motivated you to become a wedding planner? With 25 years of experience in the hotel industry, i’ve seen many weddings and been a part of making a brides special day. The couple would always ask if you would be there yourself on the day. As I enjoyed this work so much I decided to focus on it full time. If you could organise a wedding past present or future, who’s would you like to and why? Every bride is special to me and everyone has there own dreams so I don’t think you could pinpoint one in particular. Have the budgets of a wedding increased or decreased in the last number of years?

It has decreased, you can get a five star wedding at a very keen rate. Now is definitely the time to get married. Prices are competitive without cutting down on food and service. The number of guests are slightly smaller these days with 100-150 being the norm but at the same time standards haven’t changed. What are the five most important things to get right on your wedding day? Ceremony Venue Food Entertainment A wedding planner. Leave the stress to him/her! Do you think Weddings in Ireland offers just as good value as weddings abroad? Absolutely, without a shadow of doubt. Taking into account the cost of flights for both the couple and the guests, There is more value to be had in Ireland. Also, there’s no place like home. What are the latest trends for weddings? There are no particular trends at the moment. Its more about getting it right at the end of the day. People want value for money and they want the highest of standards. Having it planned to the last detail is also important.

Most hotels now have a civil ceremony facility. However, once it’s a public place, a couple could get married anywhere, from the zoo to a beach. The one thing to remember is to check with the chosen registrar about where they will travel. How do you think men stand up in the organisation of weddings versus women such as in Don’t tell the bride? They like to think to they are very involved in the planning of the wedding but really they tend to agree with the bride which is a good way to start a marriage!! Why should a couple hire a wedding planner? To save money is one of the key reasons. During my many years of experience I have built up contacts right across the board, from venues to entertainment, to accessories and many more. Also, as many couples are so busy these days, a wedding planner can take the stress out of organising a wedding and there’s a lot to be said for that! ! r i S u o y s t i u S So you’ve reached that age that all your friends are getting married

and you have at least 3 invites a year to various weddings. If you’re

attached that is likely to increase to 6 weddings a year! If you are not in a job that requires a suit on a day to day basis you may be out of

touch with what to wear. That suit you got for your first interview or

your graduation probably won’t be suitable. Or you might have put on a pound or two! Here are a few tips on what you should look for when you are in the market for a new suit.

When you are choosing your suit you should consider the fabric, colour and fit. If you are not a confident shopper bring along a friend who is. If you can afford it get a suit tailor made. This will be the best fit for your frame and size and probably will give you enough room if you tend to put on a pound or two. If you can’t afford a tailor made suit there are countless men’s shops and high street stores that are producing some nice quality suits.

Once you have chosen your suit get a matching shirt and tie. You may have a few shirts you use that will suit. If not go buy a fresh set. When you are choosing your shirt and tie set you might want to consult your date. Matching their outfit would be a nice touch. Happy shopping and make sure if in doubt ask that shop assistant they are there to help!

Make sure you try on the suits, don’t just buy your size! Bend down in it and make sure that your arms are moving freely. You will be wearing if for a full day so you want to be comfortable sitting and dancing the night away. Make sure you get a suitable colour for your skintone (yes you have to consider this too boys!) A neutral colour will suit most shirts and ties and more importantly your wedding date! Resist the urge to go for off the wall colours or styles unless that is your thing. You will end up looking like Jim Carrey in Dumb and Dumber and will probably end up being dumped! Fabric is also important, make sure its breathable so that you don’t end up feeling like you are in your own personal sauna! Wools are best but microfibers are breathable, washable and water repellent (which could save you on dry cleaning bills). Linens are good for hot summer days but beware they wrinkle like crazy. Polyester is wrinkle free and affordable but makes you sweat.

A stone’s throw away... Kilkenny: Archaeological Excavations by T. Fanning and M. Clyne, Archaeological Monograph Series 3. So what is it all about? Kells Priory is one of the largest and most magnificent medieval monuments in Ireland. Situated on the bank of the King’s River, it comprises a collection of medieval tower houses spaced at intervals along and within walls which enclose a site of some three acres. Kells Priory was founded by Geoffrey FitzRobert in 1193. FitzRobert was brother-in-law to Strongbow and the priory succeeded an earlier church which was dedicated to St. Mary, the Blessed Virgin and served as parish church to nearby Kells village. During its first century and a half the priory was attacked and burned on three occasions, firstly by Lord William de Bermingham in 1252, by the Scots army of Edward Bruce on Palm Sunday 1326, and by a second William de Bermingham in 1327. It seems likely then that the walls and fortifications date back to this period of unrest. In 1324 the Bishop of Ossory Richard de Ledrede paid a lenten visit to the priory. Following an inquisition into a Kilkenny sect of heretics, Alice Kyetler and William Outlaw were ordered to appear before the Bishop to answer charges of witchcraft. Outlaw was supported by Arnold de Paor, Lord of Kells who arrested the Bishop and had him imprisoned in Kilkenny Castle for 17 days. This caused great scandal and on his release the Bishop successfully prosecuted the heretics. Alice Kyetler fled to England and remained there, Alice Smith also fled, but her mother Petronella de Meath became Ireland’s first heretic to be burned at the stake. Dissolution of Kells Priory finally took place in March 1540 and the church and property were surrendered to James Butler, Ninth Earl of Ormonde. Large-scale archaeological investigations were carried out by Tom Fanning over four seasons between July and August 1972, a second and third season in 1974 and 1975 and finally for two months in 1980 concentrated on the church, the claustral ranges and the lower ranges within the monastic precinct. The final season of excavation was undertaken by Miriam Clyne in 1996. All investigations were carried out on behalf of and funded by the National Monuments Service. They were undertaken as part of and in advance of a programme to facilitate the conservation, presentation and interpretation of the site.

The finds provide evidence for contacts and trade. Imported thirteenth and fourteenthcentury pottery vessels came mainly from England and France. Other finds can be equated with local industry. The majority of the pottery, used for storage, cooking and at the table, was Irish, and much of it originated in the Kilkenny area. Artefacts, especially those used every day, such as iron and stone objects, were probably made in the environs of Kells. The excavations revealed that some items were manufactured at the priory. There was a thirteenth-century kiln within the precinct, where floor tiles were made. Iron smelting took place and artefacts, such as nails and horseshoes, were fashioned. The finds demonstrate daily life at the priory and a number of objects can be dated to occupation during this phase. An important find, which shows the high status of the priory shortly after its foundation, is the lead seal of Pope Innocent III (11981216). Lead points were used for writing and marking out lines on parchment. Sewing is represented by a copper alloy thimble and a stone needle punch. Items probably worn by the inhabitants at the priory were buckles and buttons. Personal hygiene is indicated by a tiny earscoop with a toothpick. There are also bone combs. Other everyday artefacts include keys, knives, hones and fragments of metal cauldrons used for cooking. Bone tuning pegs and an iron Jews harp provide tangible evidence for music at the priory.
