Kilkenny’s inaugural Christmas festival – A Very Kilkenny Christmas – has been launched with a programme of activities that might be described by Santa Claus himself as “good… very, very good”. Funded by Kilkenny Borough Council and organised by Kilkenny City Centre Business Association, A Very Kilkenny Christmas is all about providing Kilkenny people with fun and community-based incentives to come into the city centre and creating an emotional connection to Kilkenny at Christmas time, according to organisers. A Christmas train, piped music on High Street, igloos and a reindeer bronco on The Parade, a poignant candle lighting ceremony, storytelling for children, a Christmas treasure trail, a competition to award the most extreme Christmas jumper and even a 12 flavours of Christmas food trail are some of the scheduled initiatives which, in their totality, are designed to “create future happy memories” of Christmas time in Kilkenny. Separately planned seasonal events in Kilkenny, such as the Santa Run, Nun Run, Christmas-themed theatre productions, Rothe House’s Christmas Miscellany evening, Kilkenny Castle’s Christmas programme, Kilkenny on Ice, the Christmas market at MacDonagh Junction and events at the Market Cross SC will also be listed and promoted under the A Very Kilkenny Christmas banner. Dressing is not just presenting an image of you to the outside world. I firmly believe clothes should make you feel good. You should dress for you, and to make the best of what you have got. All women have ‘hang- ups’ about their figure, never more so than as we age. The most important thing is to understand this, and at Rumour we work with our clients through talking to them, and even more importantly, by listening to them. It is only through dialogue with our customers that we can help them make a decision about a purchase. We have a very strong philosophy and say it regularly to our clients. “Our best advert is a happy you”. If a customer has received honest advice about style and fit, and leaves happy with her purchase, (confident that you have helped her choose the best outfit for her); she not only comes back to make future purchases, but also tells her friends about the service she has received. We are always totally honest about the fit of a garment and will style each woman to suit her figure and lifestyle. Our clients have come to respect this honesty, and many even come into us with purchases from other shops to ask for styling advice and our opinion. Now more than ever, value for money is a must. When selecting styles for the shop, we always have an eye on quality as well as standards of manufacture. We also like to choose garments that are multi-functional and can be ’reinvented’, worn different ways with accessories etc. and fit in with existing wardrobe items to maximise the wearability. We offer such advice to clients as we are selecting garments together. Regular clients are offered a Privilege membership, offering discounts, previews and a gift purchasing service to friends and family for occasions such as birthdays and Christmas. By recording a history of purchases and sizes, we build up a profile of the type of items the customer likes and can therefore confidently aid with gift purchasing. Of course, vouchers are also available. Our best advert: “A Happy You”.

Confessions of a beauty snob… BY SARAH CANNING

without leaving your lips greasy or feeling caked with product. It also has a delicate scent, and tends to last a long time.

Face

Hi all… The temperatures have really started to plummet all of a sudden, and it’s time to get ourselves prepped and ready for the cold months ahead. I’d love to share with you my three top products that I use at this time year for the lips, hands and face. Lips Our lips are one of the most delicate parts of our body, and can really get chapped and sore particularly when the weather breaks. I find Lip Balm by the Irish Handmade Soap Co. the best out there, and believe me I have tried and tested them all. Made with all natural ingredients, this Irish made product is full of good nutrients, and works a treat

16 KILKENNY WINTER

Hands Just like lips, our hands are another easy target for the cold spell. Make sure you keep them well protected and hydrated using a good hand cream every day. My personal favourite has to be ‘Hand Food’ by Soap & Glory. I cannot leave the house without this product at this time of year. Its light texture is non-greasy, there are no harsh ingredients so it’s perfect for anyone with sensitive skin, and it also smells absolutely amazing! This product has won best hand cream awards time and time again, and it’s certainly evident why.

It’s important to use a good facial moisturiser all year round, but particularly in the winter months. Like most people, my skin gets very dry at this time of year and I always make sure to upgrade to a good moisturiser to insure it is kept well hydrated and nourished. For me, there is nothing like ‘DayWear Plus’ by Estée Lauder. This product is a little more credit card than credit crunch, but it really is a little pot of magic. It is bursting with essential oils and nutrients, which enhance and protect the skin all in one. It also includes an SPF 15 which will keep you protected from harmful UV rays, which still must be factored into our skin care regime in the winter. A great product, and worth the extra few pennies! Until next time…. X Sarah All products featured are available online, and in good health care/ beauty shops and pharmacies. If you want to contact Sarah look her up on the Kilkenny Zine facebook and like her page, Confessions of a Beauty Snob.

Spotlight on Business Warren McCreery

1. How many years have you been in business? Almost 9 years, which have absolutely flown by! I worked with one of the largest property firms in Dublin for 10 years previous to setting up my own practice here in Kilkenny. 2. What kind of services do you provide and is there any area that you specialise in? We provide a host of property related services which include; Residential Sales & Lettings, Commercial Sales & Lettings, Property Acquisition and Property Valuation for a host of clients and institutions in the county of Kilkenny 3. As somebody who is self employed, do you have a good work/life balance and how hard is it to achieve that? I would like to think I do

20 KILKENNY WINTER

have a good work/life balance but the cut and trust of my profession does not always allow this. Many people wish to view properties after work hours and on weekends which is understandable given all our hectic lifestyles these days! When I do get some time I usually spend it with my wife two young daughters which can be equally demanding! After that I love to get in a bit of cycling and often meet up with The Kells Angels Cycling Club (a tough bunch!). 4. In your opinion, what are the main challenges facing small business’ today? I think that many small businesses are not supported enough by Government. As a sole trader practice we are unable to avail of the “Job Bridge Scheme” and other similar employment initiatives which are supposedly designed to create new employment and equally assist small businesses like ours through challenging times. You could say the “bridge” is broken in this regard! On a serious note I think that accessible finance is also critical to any small business and I think that banks are just beginning to loosen their grip ever so slightly as the economy begins to turn. 5. If you had one piece of advice to give somebody starting out on their own in business what would it be? Think big and stay small at the beginning and understand that a business will take 3-4 years to get up off the ground. Think long and hard of the longevity of your intended business and its location. 6. For visitors to Kilkenny what would be the one attraction you would recommend? The stain glass window in The Black Abbey is apparently the largest in Ireland and is really worth checking out. St. Canices Cathedral is a very close second…so much history!

SUPERVALU TIDYTOWNS South East Region Awards Ceremony

This year’s SuperValu TidyTowns awards for the South East region were presented in the Parade Tower, Kilkenny Castle. SuperValu TidyTowns winners were presented with their awards by Mr. Phil Hogan, T.D., and Martin Kelleher, Managing Director, SuperValu proud sponsors of the competition. Also joining the Minister on stage was Gary Breen from Fáilte Ireland. The overall winner for the region is Kilkenny City who also retained their Gold Medal status. Speaking at the awards ceremony Minister Hogan said: “I’m delighted to have this opportunity today to acknowledge the efforts of TidyTowns groups across this region, and to pay tribute to the very many enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers who get involved in this great competition every year. The unselfish effort and the generosity displayed by these volunteers really does make a difference to our communities. The results of their hard work is evident across the region in towns and villages that are better cared for, better places to live and more attractive places to visit. I would like to pay tribute to all the other TidyTowns groups not here today who are also committed to improving their communities year on year and have not yet achieved formal recognition in the competition. All TidyTowns groups take pride in their communities. I’d like to congratulate Kilkenny, the overall winner for the South East region as well as all of today’s other prize-winners.” The Minister also thanked TidyTowns’ main sponsor SuperValu. “I would like to thank SuperValu for their continued sponsorship of this competition. This is SuperValu’s twenty second year of involvement in the SuperValu TidyTowns competition at local and national level and they have helped this competition to flourish and grow and continue to demonstrate a real commitment to supporting local communities.” Martin Kelleher, Managing Director SuperValu, said: “I am delighted to congratulate this year’s winners and in particular, to acknowledge the endearing commitment and true dedication of TidyTowns committees in the South East region who make such a difference at local level. Their passion and drive to improve their community is a real inspiration to others and illustrates the benefits of working together for the greater good of their community.” Interest in the SuperValu TidyTowns competition has been stronger than ever in recent years and for the third year running over 800 communities entered the competition. The competition has been running since 1958 and is organised by the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government. The competition has been sponsored by SuperValu since 1992.

A World of Food in the Marble County Ken McGuire

Food blogger Ken McGuire takes a look at some of the artisan delights from a selection of Kilkenny’s top food producers. Like it or not. Christmas is upon us once again and, when it comes to food, the festive season is my favourite time of year. Over the past few years I’ve been weaving artisan foods into the traditional Christmas fare at home, from bread and cheese to sauces, meats, chocolates and more so if you’re looking for something a little different to have around the big day, here’s some food for thought. A Venison Breakfast I first met Jason Conway of Elda Wild Irish Venison at the Waterford Harvest Festival in 2012, later inviting him to Foodcamp in Kilkenny that year as a speaker. The downturn in construction brought about the start of his business, only and running at that time. Having hunted through Europe and South Africa for a few years, Jason hunts for venison almost year round and now produces high quality gluten free venison sausages, burgers and haunch steaks. As soon as I came across the burgers, regular beef burgers have not crossed my door since but the sausages are something else. Grilled or fried, what goes under the grill is what you get back. Two to three times the size of your regular sausage, there’s little or no fat meaning a virtual whole meat sausage that’s absolutely

24 KILKENNY WINTER

packed with flavour. For the slimming conscious, I have heard the come in around the ‘1.5 sins’ mark for one slimming programme, far below regular sausages. The herbs and spices used in the mix mean there’s no real game taste and two on a plate would be enough to fill anyone. No fear they’ll be part of the Christmas fry this year. Pick them up in Kilkenny at Grogan & Brown Artisan Butchers, Loughboy.

Spice Things Up Waterford-based Tastefully Yours’ range of chutneys and sauces have been available in Kilkenny for a few years now. I’m a huge fan of their spicy apple and chilli chutney while they also produce a fantastic red onion marmalade and honey and thyme mustard. More recently, I’ve taken a love for their sweet chilli sauce, sold in the old fashioned click top bottles. Out of almost twenty lines produced, the sweet chilli sauce is their best seller and once you taste it, it’s not hard to see why. With a very easy pour, it’s packed with chillies, tomatoes, peppers and no doubt some kind of voodoo magic that keeps you coming back for more. It does pack a punch, but you’ll find that hard to resist too. It’s an ideal complement to breads, meats, and vegetables or just served for dipping.

Tastefully Yours products are available from the Kilkenny Design Centre Food Hall. Orchard Syrup Saves Christmas

All you need for Christmas dessert: a block of ice cream, a few After Eights, some crushed biscuits and a bottle of Highbank Organic Orchard Syrup. Produced in Killenny and the recipient of many an award, Highbank’s orchard syrup over most things - but especially ice cream - is divine. A few Christmases’ ago, with no show stopper dessert to follow the big meal, we cut some wafer-sized pieces of ice cream, topped them with diced After Eight mints, some crushed Digestives and drizzled them with the Orchard Syrup. Such was the success, it’s now become the de facto Christmas or dinner party dessert. Made solely from apples it goes well with anything, whether a salad in the summer or a hot bowl of porridge before work in the winter, but especially ice cream. Find Highbank Organic Orchard Syrup at The Gourmet Store in Kilkenny.

Knockdrinna Cheese

There’s Always Time For Cheese Dessert in my house is usually followed by a cheese board and in Kilkenny we’re spoilt in having Knockdrinna Farmhouse Cheese in Stoneyford. Knockdrinna Snow has been a staple of the Knockdrinna range since Helen Finnegan began making cheese in 2004. A silver winner at the 2013 Irish Cheese Awards, the Snow is a mild and soft goats Camembert, firm when young, with citrus flavours as it matures and by far and away my favourite of the range. Whether with crackers or bread, you could top the cheese with some of the Tastefully Yours Red Onion Marmalade or even a drizzle of Highbank’s Organic Orchard Syrup, but whatever way you dress it up, this is a cheese that doesn’t disappoint. They’ve also added to their line of late with a craft beer cheese. Having enjoying a number of events between Knockdrinna and Carlow Brewing Company, they’ve teamed up with Carlow Brewing and the Little Milk Company, Dungarvan, to produce a semisoft cow’s milk cheese with organic milk, rind-washed in O’Hara’s Pale Ale. Knockdrinna cheese is widely available, first and foremost at their farm shop in Stoneyford but also available at Caulfield’s SuperValu, Loughboy.

Shopping Artisan This Christmas If you’re looking at shopping for artisan goodies to keep in the larder or fridge for the festive season, you’ve got plenty of options in Kilkenny. Like SuperValu and The Gourmet Store, you can also check out the recently established Little Green Grocer on Parliament Street, Glasrai and Goodies in Gowran, Shortis Wong’s on John Street or keep an eye on the farmer’s markets in Kilkenny every Thursday. If you’re in the south of the county, a trip to Ardkeen Stores in Waterford is also worth the visit to pick up any of the above. For more on artisan Christmas goodies, you can catch up on the products and producers by visiting AnyGivenFood.com.

THE PARTY SEASON

As the days get colder and the nights get darker our thoughts turn to the party season ahead. The invitations will drop through the letterbox and the diary will soon fill with events and parties with friends and family. The first thing I think of when an invitation arrives is what will I wear? The invitation isn’t going to say what to wear unless it’s a wedding so it’s all down to you and me! The neon’s of the summer can stay in the wardrobe until Spring but the good news is that it’s going to be a colourful season so don’t pack away the vibrant chinos especially strong reds, petrol blue and green as they all play a part in this year’s party season. Moss green chinos with a softer pastel shirt and a good pair of tan leather shoes is a good smart casual look. The new Justin Reece range of men’s shoes caught my eye recently, really versatile! I like to wear layers in winter, it’s a good look and can be made more formal when the event requires something a little smarter. A sleeveless V neck jumper or cardigan under a smartly cut jacket in shades of grey with a good striped scarf can look like a smart suit or can look more casual paired with a good pair of jeans. Ralph Lauren have a classic V neck jumper this season that is timeless so the reliable High street stores have followed the catwalks and V neck cardigans and jumpers similar in style to the top designers are widely available. The grey on grey look as perfected by Paul Smith looks particularly smart if you match a gunmetal grey suit with a lighter grey shirt and a dark grey tie. Accessories play a big part for men at this time of the year. Choose colourful accessories, purple striped scarves, Russian style hats in shades of grey and the ever popular Tom Ford Aviator

26 KILKENNY WINTER

Sunglasses. I’m a big fan of PUSH watches too with their colourful straps which look good and are fun. A few shades of grey, a little colour, stylish accessories and a party with friends, good food and a nice cocktail and you’re all set for a wonderful festive season!

The Sunday Drive

Siobhan Donohoe

We have a few simple rules for our Sunday drive. No radio, no techie gadgets, no phone, and no maps. We are simply going to GET LOST – in time, in conversation, in Kilkenny. The first of many Sunday drives… Took us 10kms beyond Inistioge towards New Ross. We came across a sign for the “Inn at Ballilogue.” An “Inn” out in these parts! Curiosity was killing this cat so we kept driving until we came across a cluster of old cottages up a boreen. The proprietor Pat McCarthy came out to greet us and showed us around what was once was the small village of Ballilogue Clochán. Local history and early census data suggest that Ballilogue was a well populated farming community with a forge and a shop. Since it opened two and half years ago, the Inn at Ballilogue has won multiple awards. It rates highly in The McKenna Guide, Georgina Campbell Guides and on Trip Advisor. So was there room at the Inn? There certainly was, and I can’t wait for an excuse to come back and stay. The Inn is a light filled contemporary space, steeped in tradition, and inspired and created by designer and owner, Pat. All the bedrooms and suites are named after the people whose homes were within the Clochán in bygone times e.g. Mrs M, Jack, Kitty, Paddy, etc. The food is delicious and homemade and the staff are all local which is important for knowledge of the local history. There’s the wonderful Mrs. Meaney’s

28 KILKENNY WINTER

Cottage museum and craft shop, which has all the glory of 1700’s thatch cottage. Private party or corporate breaks can enjoy traditional music at Mrs Meaney’s Cottage after dinner. Day trippers can visit The Cottage Museum and design craft shop and the café shop over the weekends. The Christmas Shop and Museum is open from 2-5pm Saturday and Sundays until December 15th, with mulled wine and nibbles. You can also enjoy a pre-Christmas gettogether with friends in December before the Inn closes for its annual break in January and February. Or imagine your exclusive wedding celebration for up to forty guests in banquet style at the Old Dairy. Note! It is also a kid’s free zone - except for private parties and weekends at the café shop. My two were kept busy playing Irish explorers! We loved this gem and we are going back! www.ballilogueclochan.com +353-51-423857 If you have any suggestions for Siobhan’s Sunday Drive please email her sibhydonohoe@gmail.com

Model Behaviour

We asked the beautiful and very lovely Karen Fitzpatrick, one of Ireland’s top model’s and Kilkenny native a few questions about herself. We in Kilkenny Magazine have worked with Karen both as a model and a makeup artist. We are always impressed by her natural beauty and lovely personality. How did you get into modelling? With a lot of persuasion from a friend, Brendan Hennessy! Eventually after a year or so of him trying to convince me to give it a go I gave in & said I would try it out!! So a friend of his, well known photographer Thomas Sunderland from Carlow took my very 1st pictures. He convinced me to send them to an agency in Dublin. They took me on pretty much straight

32 KILKENNY WINTER

away which was a big surprise to me at the time! I couldn’t see it....What they saw that could possibly make me become a fashion model! I felt like a total phony for a few months because I had never imagined myself in this industry!! Let alone make a career in it for almost 13 years! You also are a make up artist, do you enjoy being on the other side of the chair so to speak? Yes it’s great because I get to do both! When modelling I get to sit in the chair & get my makeup done for different jobs, during that time I’m learning the newest tricks of the trade & seeing the best products on the market from the best makeup artists in the business! Then when I’m on the other side of the chair I get to put it all to use! So I feel lucky to be in that position. I love doing makeup, it’s like having a blank canvas & then getting to make the most of a persons best features for them. What do you think of fashion in Ireland? I am so impressed right now with Irish fashion, particularly designers. They are coming out of every direction & they are better & better every season! I just did a beautiful show for Irish designer Umit Kutluk, his clothes are just amazing. He is definitely one to watch. I also love Louise Kennedy who just recently had her 30th anniversary show in Hugh Lane gallery in Dublin. Emma Manley is new to the Irish designer scene & she is going to do very well. Lennon Courtney’s new collection is beautiful

& very wearable & of course the wonderful Peter O’Brien never ceases to amaze with his incredible evening dresses & his collections for Arnotts are always simply beautiful. There are so many to keep your eye on, I could just go on & on! You base yourself in Kilkenny rather than Dublin, what’s your favourite thing about Kilkenny? My favourite thing about Kilkenny.... There are quiet a few actually! Well it goes without saying Kilkenny is a very very beautiful city & county. I love the eclectic mix of shops, bars & restaurants. I think we are very lucky to have such variety on our doorstep. I recently did a shoot in Woodstock Gardens in Inistioge. I’m embarrassed to say it was my first time there, & it’s just beautiful. It’s one of the many jewels in Kilkenny’s crown! Describe your style? I would probably describe my style as very mixed actually, a bit of classic with boho & boyish influences thrown in! When your running from job to job & up at the craic of dawn & gone until late at night some days you look for comfort in your clothes. So right now, it’s usually something like skinny jeans, white T, wool jumper/cardi, leather jacket or oversized coat & flats. Oh & with a pair of heels thrown in my bag in case I have to run to a last minute casting! Karen Fitzpatrick can be seen all over Ireland and beyond in Advertising campaigns, editorial work and fashion shows as a model with Assets. If you would like to find out more about Karen’s make-up artistry email her on sculptbykaren@gmail.com.
