PEDRO BARATEIRO MattHew Darbyshire Sophy Rickett Vicken Parsons & castle hill open day 2013

PEDRO BARATEIRO We Belong to the People When We’re Outside 14 September - 3 November 2013 Portuguese artist Pedro Barateiro has developed a new film taking as its starting point two particular objects, a letter from the artist Constantin Brancusi and the painting Composition, 1936 by Portuguese abstract artist Maria Helena Vieira da Silva. Both Brancusi and da Silva lived as exiles in Paris in the 1930s. The film consists of a timeline of several images of artworks – in different mediums – that correspond to a certain vision of art history. Barateiro is interested in exploring the idea of modernism, its promise for the future and the significance of da Silva’s and Brancusi’s work. Kettle’s Yard is an important source of material for the film. Barateiro’s work explores how we look at art and objects and the way the meanings we ascribe to them change over time. After the premiere at Kettle’s Yard, the film will be presented at the Fundação Arpad Szenes-Vieira da Silva in Lisbon, which houses the painting Composition by Vieira da Silva which inspired it.

SOPHY RICKETT Objects in the Field 14 September - 3 November 2013 In 2011 and 2012 Sophy Rickett made regular visits to the Institute of Astronomy at Cambridge University as an Associate Artist. Her new photographs are a response to meeting a retired fellow of the Institute, the scientist Dr Roderick Willstrop. Rickett has produced a remarkable series of large-scale photographs inspired by the negatives produced from the Three Mirror Telescope designed and built by Dr Willstrop. Her new work explores the connections between optics and seeing, the shift from analogue to digital, relationships between different kinds of photographic practice and the encounter between an individual and an institution, between an artist and a scientist. Also on display will be a selection of earlier works from To The River (Archive) 2011-12 inspired by the Severn Bore, a large surge wave that can be seen in the estuary of the River Severn.

The Artist Associateship programme at the Institute of Astronomy was conceived and organised by Barry Phipps. The exhibition is supported by Brancolini Grimaldi, London.

VICKEN PARSONS Painted Objects St Peter’s Church, 14 September - 13 October 2013 Vicken Parsons is best known for her small, intimate paintings of landscape and architectural space. But for this special installation of recent work in St Peter’s Church, Parsons will be showing a number of recent sculptures or ‘painted objects‘ that might almost be models for utilitarian buildings. At the same time they are compelling paintings on a three dimensional ground. Parsons writes: ‘The painted surface is sometimes solid and rugged, sometimes a thin veil of colour and sometimes abraded and partly taken back to the metal concealing and revealing the materiality of these very dense, solid, milled steel blocks.’ During 2014 the artist will also be presenting her work within the Kettle’s Yard House. St Peter’s, a beautiful small church, was rebuilt in the 18th Century but retains 12th Century and Roman details. It is now in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust.

Matthew Darbyshire A Way of Life (in homage to Jim Ede) Autumn 2013 on the Castle Street facade For his new work Matthew Darbyshire couples eye-popping imagery taken from this season’s home-ware magazines with a series of iconic scenes from the interior of the Kettle’s Yard House. During his time as Associate Artist at Kettle’s Yard, Darbyshire became interested in Jim Ede’s selective approach to taste and trends that was fundamental to realising his vision at Kettle’s Yard in the 1950s and 60s. By introducing the latest in mass produced home-wares into the House, from vibrant painted furniture to flocked animals and shiny amorphous sculptural forms, Darbyshire creates an imagined contemporary makeover. Matthew Darbyshire has been one of four Associate Artists working with Kettle’s Yard since 2011.
