1 March - 14 April 2013 Kettle’s Yard has invited two artist led spaces from the East of England to take up temporary residence in the gallery. Aid & Abet from Cambridge and Outpost from Norwich will bring together artists from their networks to exhibit work, perform and take part in a lively programme of events. Aid & Abet was founded in 2009 by artists Sarah Evans, David Kefford and CJ Mahony. Currently occupying a large warehouse near the railway station in Cambridge, Aid & Abet provides artists with a flexible production and presentation site that combines work, project, gallery and performance spaces. This model of working allows contemporary artists the freedom to innovate, collaborate and engage in critical discourse while also welcoming audiences to engage with cross-disciplinary practices in creative ways.

For their project at Kettle’s Yard, Aid & Abet will transfer this structure to the galleries of Kettle’s Yard. Bringing together artists from their network, they will curate a group exhibition that will look at transitions, thresholds, boundaries and transformation as a way of exploring the dynamic relationships between artists and institutions. The selected artists share common interests in elements of the outsider, the cult and the uncanny, which will be visible in the wide variety of works on show, including performance, film, sculpture and print. A lively programme of contextual events will accompany the curated exhibition, including a formal debate to take place in the house at Kettle’s Yard, where two University of Cambridge debaters will be supported by teams of artists and curators to challenge the notion ‘The house believes that commercial gallery representation is essential to a successful art career’. A series of salon crits will invite members of the public to participate in discussions around the work and ideas on show in the exhibition and will provide them with a unique opportunity to bring their own work to Kettle’s Yard for critique. Throughout both projects, members of the public will be invited to contribute and engage in conversations both in person and online through the Kettle’s Yard blog, live streams of events and social media. Temporary Residence will be accompanied by a critical text by Chris Brown.
