AFRO PERUVIAN

By: Maria Veronica Cevallos

usana Baca de la Colina, better known as Susana Baca, has put on many hats throughout her life. At 70 years old, she has been chosen twice to represent a culture that she has worked all her life to preserve and represent: Latin America’s African and Indigenous roots. As a minister of Culture in Peru back in 2011, Baca lamented the idea of children today experiencing the discrimination she experienced in her own childhood for being of African descent and decided to work in such post for the advancement of all people in her native Peru. Her work would continue later when Baca was chosen once again, this time by the Organization of American States (OAS), to be the President of the Commission of Culture. Despite having such important posts, Susana’s first and foremost interest and life’s work is not politics, but music. Baca’s most recognizable role is that of being a performer and singer of Afro-Peruvian music. The world first heard of Baca’s soft but passionate voice back in 1995, when Talking Head’s David Byrne compiled “AfroPeruvian Classics: The Soul of Black Peru”. The album, one of the first international releases of this kind of music, saw Baca interpreting her most recognizable hit, “Maria Lando”, a heartbreaking tale of worker oppression, where Baca’s emotional delivery made an impression in listeners of the album. Susana’s music career did not start then, however. Born just outside of Lima, in a fishing village of Chorillos, Baca was always surrounded by the music. Her father was a guitar player, her mother, a dancer, her aunts were singers and her cousins,

Ronaldo Campos y Caitro Soto, were later members of Peru Negro, an afro-peruvian musical ensemble. Although at first Susana decided to pursue a career in education following the advice of her parents, the decision to make music her life came from those influences and Susana decided to immerse herself in the study of music. As a student, Susana formed an experimental group that combined music and poetry, and earned a grant from both Peru’s Institute of Modern Art and the National Institute of Peruvian Culture to study and research Peru’s traditional music roots. It was during this revivalist period not only in Peru, but Latin America, that Baca’s work got the attention of another prominent composer and singer, Chabuca Granda. Granda, an emblematic symbol of Afro-Peruvian music, mentored and encouraged Susana to record and perform. Unfortunately, due to Granda’s death in 1983, such a project did not come to pass at that time. Susana later went along with her husband, sociologist Ricardo Pereira, through a journey through the Peruvian coastline, gathering testimonials, stories, and documents of the lives of people of African descent and their lives. These experiences later became a book and an album called “Del Fuego y del Agua” in which Baca sings tracks full of the spirit of the culture she had researched for eleven years. Susana and Ricardo then founded the Black Continuum Institute, aiming in continuing the work that their research had started. Although Baca had released some material before becoming involved with

Byrne’s compilation, “Maria Lando” became Susana’s catapult into musical recognition inside and outside of Peru. In 1997, Susana released her eponymous album and starts a string of releases consisting of 9 more albums. Her 2002 album “Lamento Negro” won a Latin Grammy and Nomination, and in 2011 again, Baca won a Latin Grammy, for the song “Latinoamerica”, a collaboration with Calle 13, with the vocal collaborations of Brazilian singer-songwriter Maria Rita and Colombian recording artist “Toto” La Momposina. Don’t miss a chance to hear one of the prominent Latin American folk singers perform in our area. Her performance November 23 at the Howard Theater is not one to be missed. FLAMENCO CONSIDERED ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL FLAMENCO VOICES OF OUR TIME, THE INTERNATIONAL SPANISHDOMINICAN ROMANI, THREETIME GRAMMY WINNER, DIEGO RAMÓN JIMÉNEZ SALAZAR KNOWN AS “EL CIGALA” HAS CAPTIVATED AUDIENCES ALL OVER THE WORLD WITH HIS GRAVELLY VOICE AND PASSIONATE INTERPRETATION OF ANDALUSIAN FLAMENCO. Born into a family of Spanish Gypsy artists and intellectuals in Madrid, Diego started singing in flamenco peñas (enthusiasts’ clubs) and tablaos, until his excellent meter and ability to mark the rhythm caught the attention of world-class dancers like Mario Maya, Faíco, Farruco, El Güito, Manuela Carrasco, Cristóbal Reyes, Carmen Cortés, Joaquín Cortés and he began touring as part of their companies. By the late nineties, having collaborated on recordings by renowned singers like Camarón, Tomatito, Gerardo Núñez and Vicente Amigo, he was ready to record his own album. “Undebel” launched his career as solo singer. Fast forward to today, and Diego has now recorded 8 albums and has won three Grammys and five Latin Grammy nominations. His various collaborations with world-renowned Latin American artists, transcending the boundaries of the genre, have earned him a reputation for seamlessly melding the rhythms and melodies of his Spanish Gitano heritage with styles ranging from bolero to son, tango, and Afro-Caribbean jazz. One of his greatest albums is the 2003’s “Lágrimas Negras”, a collaboration with the then 85 year old Cuban pianist, Bebo Valdés. The easy fusion of Cuban rhythms and flamenco vocals made this record an international success. Cigala and Valdés first showcased “Lágrimas Negras” at the Gusman Theatre in Miami. The next morning, the press described the pianist as, “a living classic of the Cuban music” and the “Sinatra of flamenco”. By: Aminta S. Nieves-Candamo

To think that the record label showed no interest in the project seems crazy, when even the New York Times harshest music critic, Ben Ratliff, had acknowledged this album as 2003´s Album of the Year. “Lágrimas Negras” went from an intimate, spontaneous project to an unstoppable boom that overcame the borders of flamenco and Latin music all over the

world. The excellent criticism, the way these two geniuses defended their live shows and, above all, word of mouth, kept this album at the top of charts for the next two years. In the middle of the never ending “Lágrimas Negras” tour, Diego recorded a collaboration of Paco de Lucia’s album “Cositas Buenas” and “Suspiros de España”, which became the main track of the film “Soldados de Salamina” by David Trueba. Diego then decided to return to flamenco by paying homage to one of the greatest painters of all times, Pablo Ruiz Picasso. “Picasso in my eyes” became a Gold record in Spain and also in Venezuela. In this album, musicians such as Paco de Lucia, Tomatito, Raimundo Amador, Josemi Carmona and Jerry Gonzalez contributed their sound to lyrics that range from the classic “Se equivocó la paloma” by Rafael Albeiti to other tunes by contemporary composers, such as Javier Rubial, Javier Krahe or Carlos Chaouen. In 2013, weeks after releasing “Romance de la Luna Tucumana”, another collaborative project based on Argentinean tango, El Cigala announced his relocation to Dominican Republic, planning to make this his permanent residence and taking some time off. Short after receiving Dominican citizenship earlier this year, El Cigala announced he was working on a new album, this time he returned to his roots of Flamenco, his latest album “Vuelve el Flamenco: Homenaje a Paco de Lucía”. The purest “El Cigala” returns home, offering a musical adventure risky as always, a live recording with the accompaniment of his friend, Diego del Morao, Moraito’s glorious son, and Paco’s de Lucía protégé. While this piece of work has been released over the summer, Diego is currently touring the world supporting the previous record. However, do not distress, El Cigala has promised that this world tour will be full of SINGING, GUITAR, PALMS AND PERCUSSION and FLAMENCO without additives. A tour of traditional styles like the martinete, romance por seguiriyas, malagueña verdiales, soleá, taranto, sevillanas, tangos, fandangos de Huelva, bulerías y fandangos naturales, showing us the most personal vision of Diego “El Cigala”. The Romance de la luna Tucumana tour, will make a stop in the Nation’s capital on November 18, 2014 at 8:00pm in the Lisner Auditorium. “IF GOD SANG, HE WOULD DO IT WITH MILTON’S VOICE”, ELLIS REGINA ONCE SAID. Iconic

Brazilian singer-songwritermusician, Milton Nascimento, also known as “Bituca”, is without a doubt, one the Brazil’s greatest artists. Over his 50-year career, Milton Nascimento has achieved monumental success. He has toured all over the world, recorded over 37 solo albums, received four Grammy awards, and has collaborated with some of the most influential artists in history. He is known for his versatile style, amazing tonal range, and has been credited for freeing a generation of artists from bossa nova through his fusion of Africanized jazz with Latin-American folk. Originally from Três Pontas, in southern Minas Gerais, Nascimento was born with music in his blood. From banging on the piano at age 2, Nascimento played a variety of instruments growing up. He began his music career by working as a part time DJ on his father’s radio station, as well as, playing in various samba groups, before eventually forming, “Clube da Esquina”, a Brazilian music artists collective, which combined rock and roll rhythms with bossa nova, jazz,

/9

folk, and classical music. The group transformed Brazilian music, and was known as one of the most important movements in Brazilian popular music. Over the years, Nascimento has collaborated with countless international stars such as Paul Simon, Herbie Hancock, Peter Gabriel, James Taylor, Sarah Vaughan, Mercedes Sosa, Esperanza Spalding, Peter Gabriel, Duran Duran, and many others. He has been acknowledged by other international artists, not only for his musical brilliance, but also for his kind and genuine spirit: “The word inventive can’t describe him as well as the world original can, for he is on his own, a movement.”- Caetano Veloso. “I’ve never met anyone who had bitter feelings for him. Discrete, Milton became famous without ever putting on a king’s crown.” –Dorvial Caymm “Milton is a brilliant composer; He has one of the most amazing voices I have ever heard. His melodies are of a simplicity that just hit the core of your heart.”Herbie Hancock His melodies are extraordinary. They’re unique. Milton Nacimento is most

likely the greatest Brazilian songwriter since JOBIM/ Gilberto –Paul Simon It’s almost impossible to try and choose Nascimento’s greatest songs, for after making them for half a century, he has countless hits. Some of these include songs such as “Ponta de Areia”, “Travessia”, “Cacador de Mim”, “Maria Maria”, and “Canção da América”. His song, “Coração de Estudante”, was dedicated to Edson Luís, a student killed by police officers in 1968, and later played at the funerals of the late president of Brazil, Tancredo Neves, and world champion Brazilian racecar driver, Ayrton Senna. Milton Nascimento is currently celebrating his 50-year career with his latest album, Uma Travessia, and a world tour. Don’t miss your chance to experience the brilliance of this legendary Brazilian artist. Nascimento will be performing with his band at 7:30 P.M. on Thursday, November 20, 2014 at the Lisner Auditorium, 21st St. NW, Washington, DC. WE RECENTLY CAUGHT UP WITH HELADO NEGRO’S MASTERMIND, ROBERTO CARLOS LANGE, AN ECUADORIAN SINGER AND PRODUCER BORN IN FLORIDA, AND RESIDING IN NEW YORK, WHO ERADICATES CULTURAL BARRIERS AND SEAMLESSLY FLOWS BET WEEN ENGLISH AND SPANISH IN HIS LATEST ALBUM, “DOUBLE YOUTH”. The release of this latest Helado Negro album is climatic in a similar way that seeing a recurring dream come true would be. The album unfolds patient melodies with rapid techno pulses and inspires dream-like sounds and sequences. Lange took a few minutes to speak with Kesta DC about the journey to making his latest album and why his childhood played such a big role in its existence. Kesta: Congratulations on your latest album release “Double Youth”. I was enthralled by the inspiration for this album, can you tell me more? Helado Negro: Thank you. Yes, it started soon after I finished my last record last year. I knew I had an idea in my mind and it really came together in an indirect way one day when I was going through a box of mementos in my parent’s house. There was an old tattered poster of me in a carnival type pic with another boy. It brought about so many questions, because I couldn’t remember the origins of the picture at all. It started an exploration of memories and thoughts of getting older. I started thinking about all the experiences we forget about, the ambiguous trajectory that we end up building memories on top

of, it inspired me to start composing and that’s how Double Youth was born. I knew right away that that childhood picture would be the cover art of the album. Kesta: So you wrote the entire album at home? Helado: Yes, I typically make the music at home. In this case I put the picture on my wall and it was there staring back at me while I worked on different songs on the album. Eventually, I had a vague memory and put this together that the picture was from a County Fair in Miami. As some memories started to come back I wanted to capture the exactness of the moment. Double Youth is about that experience of interpreting those special moments in our life that we’re excited about. That started the ball rolling and then I started to tackle all the pre-created traditions on what are “supposed” to be the important milestones in your life (i.e. weddings, births, funerals, and religious occasions)… and so many other significant things in your life that happen that get pushed to the side. Kesta: I noticed that the songs fluctuate between English and Spanish? Is that how you hear the songs in your head? Helado: Because I live in a place where I speak English and Spanish, the aspect of Spanglish and having these two cultures is constantly in my head. Sometimes it feels like the languages are working with and against each other. This duality of being a Hispanic American and speaking both languages and going between these two personas, is what I’m about. I treat my voice in a general as an instrument in a sense. So I’ll be writing a song and make noises with my mouth to sound out what I want the song to sound

like. After I’ve done that I go back and add lyrics to the song and depending on the sound I want, it can be in English or Spanish. Speaking both languages is very useful when you’re tying the picture of the music and the lyrics together… Kesta: Do you have a favorite song off the album? Helado Negro: I like them all but if I had to pick I guess it would be “Ojos que no ven.” Ojos que no ven was inspired by something a friend of a father said, he used to be able to see and then lost his vision, “the interesting thing about becoming blind

is your friends never get old.” It’s such a lovely thought and an optimistic way to embrace something. Helado Negro plays DC9 on 10/8 with Sinkane. For more information visit: www. heladonegro.com █

RAULÍN RODRIGUEZ, THE DOMINICAN BACHATA SENSATION WILL BE IN TOWN THIS OCTOBER 10TH AT EL BOQUERON 2 IN ROCKVILLE, WITH ALL HIS BIGGEST HITS TO GET YOU DANCING ALL NIGHT ON THE FLOOR!

By: Darlene P. Campos

TROPICAL MUSIC ARTIST JOE VERAS WAS BORN ON MAY 1ST IN THE SMALL TOWN OF COTUI LOCATED IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC. HE GREW UP A IN A VERY LARGE FAMILY, BEING THE FOURTH SIBLING OF THIRTEEN CHILDREN. When Veras was young, he began performing at small venues like local churches in Cotui. Eventually, Veras was given the opportunity to study music in the Dominican Republic’s capital city, Santo Domingo. As Veras continued his studies, his talent did not go unnoticed and he soon landed a record deal with Darlenis Records. His first professional production titled “Joe Veras With Love” was released in 1993 and was well received by audiences and critics. Later, Veras signed a contract with Hipolito Records in 1995. With this company, Veras recorded and produced “Joe Veras With More Love” and “Asi Es La Vida” (That’s How Life Is). These two albums proved to be Veras’s breakthrough albums. He went on to win the Cassandra Award in 1997 for his album “Joe Veras With More Love” and the album eventually sold over 300,000 copies in just New York City alone and was given the honor of a platinum disc. Veras later went on to win several musical awards in the Dominican Republic. Joe Veras later moved on to sign a contract with JVN Music Company Incorporated and recorded a new song titled “For Your Love” and “Letter of Summer”; both songs became chart topping hits in the musical charts. Best known in the Dominican Republic and in New York City, Joe

Veras’ music is not in any way limited to just these two places. His album “Letter of Summer” has received rave reviews by national and international critics and it still remains one of the top bachata albums in Latin America. Since starting his career in the 1990s, Veras has toured in places like Belgium, Holland, Spain, Italy, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Saint Croix, Aruba, Canada, Puerto Rico, and all over the United States. With a successful career, Joe Veras is still very much a grounded musician. He openly recognizes that all of his success is thanks to his loyal fans who admire him, which keep him going strong. Joe Veras will be appearing at the Diamond Lounge located at 7203 Little River Turnpike Annandale, VA 22003 on Friday October 31st at 9pm. For more information and to purchase tickets, please visit www.tickeri.com. █

Born in the Dominican Republic, Raulín began his musical career at the young age of 14 by studying guitar and vocals after school independently. A year later he expanded his musical skills by becoming a touring musician with fellow Dominican sensation Anthony Santos, by playing guitar in the backing band for Santos. This stint with Anthony Santos ignited his passion for music so much so that it inspired Raulin to form his own band, under the name Raulin Rodriguez El Cacique del Amargue, after finishing his tour commitments with Anthony Santos. Throughout Raulin’s career he has been able to change the perception and semantics of the traditional bachata song by updating the story lines to include tales of idealized romantic lyrics in lieu of the standard and dated stories of risqué and suggestive sexual scenarios that are somewhat overplayed in the bachata genre. A perfectionist at heart, Raulin arranges and composes all of his tracks. In his career, Raulin has released multiple studio albums. “Una mujer como tú”, “Regresa amor”, “Medicina de amor”, “El amor de mi vida”, “Me la pusieron difícil”, “Soledad”, “Corazón, corazón” and “Sin Fortuna”. All of his albums have spawned multiple chart topping hits that have allowed him to extensively tour. Songs like “Nereyda”, “Una mujer como tú” and “Medicina de amor” reached high ranking positions on the Billboard charts.

His success and chart topping songs earned him prestigious nominations for a “Cassandra” award in the category of Bachatero of the Year by the Asociación de Cronistas de Arte (Acroarte) de la República Dominicana; a nomination equivalent in the Dominican Republic to that of a Grammy nomination. This nomination and his record sales place Raulin among the top 5 Bachata artists of this generation. Extensive tours and sold out shows in key cities like Miami and New York now bringing him to the DMV for an exclusive show at El Boqueron 2 on October 10th. So get your Bachata shoes ready and grab your partner because this will be a night you won’t forget! For more information on tickets, visit www.tickeri.com. █

he Rock en Español scene has seen many bands come and go since the 80’s peak that saw the birth of bands like Soda Stereo, Caifanes, Los Prisioneros, Hombres G, and Los Enanitos Verdes. One band that swooped in with its punk variety, pure Mexican rhythms, and no nonsense attitude was the phenomenon known as Café Tacuba. Founded by Ruben Albarran (vocals), Emmanuel del Real Diaz (Meme, Keyboard), Jose Alfredo Rangel ( Joselo, lead guitar), and Enrique Rangel (Quique, bass) they stretched the boundaries of Mexican pop, folk, punk, and rock creating the rebellious “Ingrata” and the reimagining of the poppy Flans hit of “No Controles” that took them into punk rock history. In celebration of 25 years of Café Tacvba, the band has gone back on the road to present their hit album, “Re” to audiences around the world. You will have a chance to check them out here in DC on Saturday, October 18th, at the legendary Lincoln Theatre. Meanwhile we’ve prepared these 20 little known facts about the legend that is Café Tacvba.

In celebration of Cafeta’s milestone album “Re” which turns 20 this year, The New York times published an in-depth review of this benchmark album in Latin Rock history, where they compared “Re” to the infamous Beatles “White Album”; the first time an Anglo publication has given this consideration to a Latin album. Café Tacvba’s style is an essential part of the esthetic of the band, especially with lead singer Rubén. Case in point, los Tacvbos have funded a shop and clothing line in México under the brand of Kaá.

Guitarist Joselo is a published author. His weekly columns appear in the Excelsior newspaper, and his book “CRócknicas Marcianas” along with his online writing collective (with fans and the internet alike) “Textos Mutantes” have expanded Cafeta’s music to a whole new audience.

Did you know that Meme has produced multiple musical projects? He’s one of the creative forces behind Juanes’ new chart topping album, “Loco De Amor.”

To celebrate 25 years of rock royalty history, Argentinean Latin Rock leaders Los Autenticos Decadentes personally selected Café Tacvba to perform on the song “Corazón” as part of the commemorative concert celebrated at Mexico’s prestigious Palacio De Los Deportes.

Lead singer Rubén is a humanitarian. He is a spokesperson for PETA and many indigenous tribes in México and across Central and South America.

Emmanuel del Real (Meme) is known in the Mexican Electronica scene as “DJ Angustias” and released an album with this collective in 2005. Rubén (lead singer) has performed under a different name for every Café Tacvba album and world tour. It began after the release of the first album, when fans used to call him “Pinche Juan” after their first underground hit. He has since performed using: Gallo Gas, Elfego Buendía, Cosme, Masiosare, Anónimo, Nrü, Amparo Tonto Medardo In Lak’ech o At Medardo ILK, G3, Rita Cantalagua, Sizu Yantra, Ixaya Mazatzin Tleyotl ó Ixxi Xooy ahora Cone Cahuitl. Joselo and Quique participated in Julieta Venegas’ debut album “Aqui”, a time in which Joselo and Julieta were a long time couple.

Is it us, or does Rubén only wear his hair down on stage? The singer very rarely lets his locks loose when out in public and around town.

Café Tacvba’s collaborations are as versatile as their music. Some collaborations include: Calle 13, Inspector, Julieta Venegas and María Barracuda.

“El Objeto Antes Llamado Disco” Cafeta’s last studio album, was recorded in front of a live studio audience and in multiple cities across the world. This is the first time a Latin band has recorded an album in this format.

Café Tacvba owes their name to a bar and restaurant called “Café Tacuba” located in Centro Historico, Distrito Federal. Before this name they went as “Alicia Ya No Vive Aquí” a tribute to Martin Scorsese. Café Tacuba went from being a garage band to a concert act in 1989 after Argentinean music producer, Gustavo Santaolalla discovered them while playing a cultural club in Coyoacan called “El Hijo del Cuervo.” Santaolalla has produced every Caféta album to-date with the exception of Cuatro Caminos which he co-produced with Dave Fridmann (Flaming lips), and Andrew Weiss ( Ween).

/ 19

The first song Café Tacvba ever released was called “Tamales de Iguanita” released by Warner as part of a Christmas-themed rock en español compilation.

Meme has written some of the bands biggest hits including La Ingrata, Las Flores, and Avientame and Eres where he also sang vocals. Café Tacuba paid homage to their influences by recording “Popurrock” a 5:31 minute song that covers Maldita Vecindad, Gran Silencio, Mano Negra, Fabulosos Cadillacs, Babasonicos, Enanitos Verdes, Aterciopelados, Caifanes, and El Tri. “La Chica Banda” is a song describing a Punk girl of the Mexican punk 80’s era. Some bands mentioned in the lyrics are Atoxxxico and Rebeld’Punk. When performing this song Ruben calls out invites the females in the audience to an all-girl mosh pit. Ruben, Quique, and Joselo design their own album covers thanks to their graphic design education from Mexico City’s UNAM University.

Café Tacuba’s “Avalancha de Exitos” is entirely a cover album. Cafeta’s approach was to perform covers that were so different from the originals they would be unrecognizable. See, Ojala Que Llueva Café, and the electronic Perfidia. █

FOOD

By: Daniel Martinez

IF YOU’RE THINKING PERRO LOCO IS A REGULAR FAST FOOD JOINT, YOU’RE WRONG. People

don’t just come to Perro Loco to order, eat, and leave. Perro Loco is serving a niche brand of Colombian Hot Dogs & Burgers reminiscent of Colombian street food and is quickly becoming “El Parche” (the growing hang out spot) for Colombians in Maryland. I have to give you the background story in order for you to understand how important that is and what it really means. We Colombians, for the most part, are pretty upbeat, happy and social people. If you ever have the opportunity to visit Colombia, you’ll be surprised to find that street food is king. Every evening people flock to surrounding neighborhoods to places where everybody knows each other by name and hang out while sampling food from various ad-hoc eateries. You may find some arepas being sold out of a neighbor’s garage, or a clandestine residential window

where you can just walk up, knock and ask for a burger or hotdog while you catch up with your friends. When somebody from Colombia moves to the US, that’s one of the most important things that they’ll miss. That’s where Perro Loco comes in! Being el “Parche Colombiano”, one of Perro Loco’s main objectives is to bring the Colombian community closer. It’s amazing what a pop-up tent, some propane tanks, some portable stove/griddles and the quintessential Colombian flag can do to start building a community following. Olga and Toto who started Perro Loco want to build relationships with their customers by not only seeing them as clients but also as friends. At the beginning of the summer, while the World Cup was taking place, Olga and Toto saw this as a great opportunity to bring together all the Colombian fans in the area. They invited everybody to their home and served food while people watched the world cup games.

Although Perro Loco is fast food, there is no doubt their food is gourmet. Their Hot Dogs and Burgers are authentically Colombian. They use all the ingredients that are used back home, even the most important one…people to share it with. The hotdogs come with the signature crumbled chips, quail eggs and pineapple sauce. They’re so enormous you’ll need both hands to handle it. The burger is also a beast! Besides the hamburger, ham, cheese and bacon, you’ll also find the simmered onion, crumbled chips, and pineapple sauce. If you are not hungry enough you’ll definitely be taking at least half of your burger home. You’ve been warned! Perro Loco doesn’t just sell hot dogs and hamburgers though, you can also find more traditional dishes like mazorcada, which is a blend of yellow corn mixed with cheese, and drizzled with different sauces which includes pulled chicken and bacon with crumbled chips. They also have the

staple arepas rellenas, arepas con chorizo and sometimes empanadas. You can’t go wrong with whatever you decide to eat, because all of the menu options are delicious and authentically Colombian. Besides the food, Perro Loco also has the perfect drink combination to take you back to Colombia. A Colombian Hamburger and Hot Dog wouldn’t be complete if you didn’t have either a Colombiana, or a Manzana Postobon, staple Colombian sodas. Olga and Toto started Perro Loco because they realized a place like this didn’t exist in the DMV. Definitely go find out what all the fuzz is about! They’re open Thursday through Sunday and set up shop at various locations throughout the city. The first step is to look them up on Facebook: www.facebook.com/perroloco. colombianos and follow their postings for their next locations. If you get lost, just look for the Colombian flag! █

ists. “I prepared very hard to make it, I gave it my all,” Moisés remembers. The three finalists were quizzed on their World Cup knowledge, Moisés was like a human sports almanac, and he had all the answers. His knowledge earned him the spot. For the duration of the World Cup, Moisés lived and breathed the sport; he would watch the games at local hangouts and conduct interviews with the fans. His hard work paid off and his reporting earned him a visit to the popular TV show, “Acción Deportiva”. Moisés kept his eye on the prize and gathered experience working as a production assistant for Fox Sports, was a columnist for Fox Deportes, was a contributing writer at Latino Sports 360 magazine, and served as a radio host with Skid Row Studios. He also found time to volunteer working with adults with developmental disabilities in California, and also maintained his own blog and wrote content for a social media fitness page. Talk about busy!

KH: Mayweather vs. Pacquiao. Do you think it’s going to happen? Moisés: It may seem like it’s not, but when you really look at it, I do think it’s going to happen. It will happen after Pacquiao leaves Bob (Arum). He has one year left in his contract with his promoter, after that, I think they will make it happen before they retire. KH: Who is your pick for the World Cup? Moisés: I always pick Argentina, but they always lose! I’ve supported them since I was 5. I remember watching Maradona on TV in the 90 World Cup, watching the games, but they lost to Germany. With Messi around, their time is now.

KH: What projects would you like to take on in the future? Moisés: I want to keep becoming a better anchor. I want to work in both, Spanish and English. I want to go to a World Cup and cover the event.

KH: I guess we know the answer to this question then, Messi or Ronaldo? Moisés: They are both great, not just because of the goals, but because of the consistency in their play. The bad thing for Ronaldo is playing in the same era as Messi. Same as Platini in the 80’s. He was one of the best, but Maradona was around. KH: Any advice for someone looking to get into sports broadcasting or journalism? Moisés: It’s not easy. There are 40 to 50 guys waiting for one opening. I waited for years, did the magazine work...and I told myself “you can’t quit”. I had to move across the country to make this happen. My accomplishments wouldn’t be possible without the love and support of two important women, my grandmother and my mother.

KH: What’s your favorite sport to cover? Moisés: Soccer, but I like to keep it balanced.

KH: How do you like living in the D.C. area? Moisés: The people are nice; they greet

When asked what his favorite part about being a Sports Anchor is, Moises shared, “I get to do, what many people wish they could do. Be on the field. As close as possible to the action.”

me and tell me they like my segment. That makes all the preparation worthwhile. It’s a cool city...except the winter. After years of hard work, preparation, and with a resolve not to quit, this California native is quickly making a name for himself in our community and has turned his passion into a successful career. Not an easy feat, now if only he could just get used to the cold winters... Don’t forget to catch the latest in sports with Moisés Linares on Telenoticias Washington D.C, Monday through Friday at 6 and 11pm. ast month’s fashion week took place across major fashion cities like New York City and London. While designers were showing their latest collections in the tents, socialites and fashion bloggers were having a catwalk of their own on the streets. As usual, media captures the looks from the runway but also chase down the “IT bloggers”, magazine editors and off-duty models for their looks. Interestingly enough in an environment where dress to impress is a must, there was a wave of guests toning it down in jeans, sneakers and fringe. It’s safe to say that during this fall season we will continue to see women pair dresses with sneakers and other casual shoes. Many of the outfits on the streets screamed personality and didn’t look like your typical polished front row look. Outfits consisted of past trends like crop tops but with a twist like crop tops with fringe or structured crop tops. Denim paired with denim was popular among NY Fashion Week attendees and so was the basic flannel shirt. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different textures, prints, colors and layers. These trends aren’t going anywhere so learning how to wear them in colder weather is a must! █

I RECENTLY MET THE “DREAM ACT KID” DURING A CLANDESTINE AFTER HOUR’S ENCHILADA DINNER AT A FRIEND’S HOUSE. IRVIS AND I HIT IT OFF RIGHT AWAY (BOTH BEING CALIFORNIA TRANSPLANTS) AND THINGS GOT DEEP QUICKLY AS IRVIS ASKED ME WHAT I THOUGHT ABOUT THE CURRENT STATE OF IMMIGRATION. AS WE CHATTED I REALIZED HIS STORY WAS ONE THAT NEEDED TO BE TOLD. Currently 26 years old, Irvis has been advocating for immigrant rights for over 8 years. It started when he was living in Southern California with his parents and four sisters, “I was a very involved kid in high school, I was in the debate team, student government, involved in public policy and then when I was around 14-16 years old the question of ‘where are you going to college started to come up’. It

was hard to answer that because I wasn’t a citizen and that meant I couldn’t go to college,” shared Irvis. “That’s when I started working with other teens who were in the exact same situation and we started to organize and advocate for legislation that would allow us to go to school and pay in-state tuition fees. This law later became known as the Dream Act.” Irvis wanted to help out his parents in any way he could so at age 13 he started working in the fields of Northern California with his mother. “I would see other kids working and it was fun at first to be there and hang out with my family, but I knew it wasn’t something that I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I decided to go back to school and made a promise to my mom that I would do really well. I did everything I could to keep that promise,” he stated. When it came time for Irvis to graduate from High School in 2007 he had a 4.3 GPA and got into all universities he applied for including UCLA, UC Berkeley, UC San Diego, and UC Davis. Irvis was able to get a scholarship to attend UCLA. Unfortunately,

the scholarship was rescinded after only one year, after some students protested that undocumented immigrants should not be allowed to earn scholarships. Irvis was back to square one working in the fields alongside his parents.

Irvis was contacted by a little known publication known as the Associated Press to share his story. All of a sudden, Irvis became the face of the Dream Act with newspapers and TV stations across the country sharing his story.

But he didn’t give up, Irvis helped to start the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles or CHIRLA, a group for students in the same situation. They organized marches, and worked tirelessly to create the California Dream Network made up of more than 80 universities from California who became advocates for the Dream Act.

Finally after a two year hiatus, Irvis was able to return to UCLA to complete his degree and graduated with honors in May of 2014 with a Bachelor’s in International Relations and Economics.

Throughout all this organizing, eventually Irvis travelled to Washington DC to participate in the Dream Act march on the mall in 2010. While he was here, he lobbied on Capitol Hill, meeting with Nancy Pelosi the House Representative and was able to share his story with her. In 2011, Irvis met with the Governor Brown of California and shared his story while urging him to pass AB 540. The California law passed later that year, after which

In 2012, President Obama signed the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) order granting kids who came to the US as children, the opportunity to apply for deferred action and process a work authorization. Although this was a big success for immigration reform, it’s far from enough. Irvis would like to bring some more of that initial California advocacy culture to the East Coast. To see how you can help advocate for immigration rights, visit UnitedWeDream. org online or follow Irvis Orozco, Twitter: @irvieoro. █

IN CASE YOU DIDN’T KNOW, LATINO’S LOVE METAL. The DMV

is one of the largest populations of Latin metal-heads who constantly feed their need to head bang by going to underground metal shows throughout the area. Local band Metanium, comprised of Marvin (vocals), Carlos (lead guitar), Alex (lead guitar), Sandra (bass), Johnny (drums), and Eli have been feeding the Latin metal By:(keys) Rosario Garcia community in the DMV since 2010. With influences ranging from Manowar, to Dio, to Spanish metal bands such as Rata Blanca, Angeles del Infierno, Baron Rojo, Hermetica and Epica, Metanium bring their unique flair and style to the genre while satisfying their own need to rock. Although Metanium is fairly new to the scene, they have already released an album “Alma de Guerrero”, have opened up for bands like Angeles del Infierno, and are slated to embark on a three month East Coast tour in the near future. The band forged by chance much like the band’s name (a blend of the word “Metal” and “Titanium”). Metanium’s lead singer Marvin happened to be at a local area mall when he ran into Alex and his friend Alan who were in a local rock band called Akeron. Marvin introduced himself, and by the end of the day was jamming with the two friends at their house. “It just clicked, I used to play in bands in El Salvador (where we are all from except for

/ 33

Alex who is from Uruguay) and I had just moved to Maryland. I had been looking for a musical outlet and I found them by chance,” said Marvin. They went by a few name and lineup changes before becoming Metanium and immediately organized a few shows to get their name out there. “I wanted to do things right. I wanted us to be organized and have songs ready to showcase. I got busy writing songs and we pooled resources to record a 4 song demo. I wanted to have something to show when we performed, in essence putting our music into people’s hands right away,” shared Marvin. They gave away the demos to anyone who would take them, they created t-shirts and gave them away and eventually they funded their own album, Alma de Guerrero, pressing 500 copies, most of which they gave away for free. “It’s an investment. We want people to know our music because we want them to come to our shows. The best way to do that is to put the music out there. The investment pays off when we hear people singing ‘La Marcha Vikinga’ or ‘Hace Mucho Tiempo’ during our live shows. They get it,” says Marvin. Although the music is the most important aspect of the band, Marvin tells us their style is also unique. “When we go out and perform we take it as a ritual. We

all bring something on stage with us that makes us stand out from the crowd, an accessory, a belt, or a chain that symbolizes something. We give it our all and try and feed that energy into the crowd,” shared Marvin who is known to remove his shirt and display the Metanium chain and devil emblem on his chest to the delight of many female fans. Speaking to Marvin, it was evident that he’s passionate about many things. Among them love, life, justice, and passing that knowledge on to others. “I wrote Alma de Guerrero for my son. I wanted to tell him my own experiences, warn him against the evils of humanity, and urge him to be strong and never look back. I tell him all the things I wish someone had told me when I was young,” shares Marvin. NU-CUMBIA IS TAKING THE WORLD MUSIC SCENE BY STORM AND LA YEGROS IS NO EXCEPTION AS THE FIRST FEMALE ARTIST SIGNED TO THE ACCLAIMED BUENOS AIRES ZZK RECORDS. The heart and soul of the

genre is celebrated and evolved with La Yegros’ thumping electronic bass, killer accordion solos and frontwoman Mariana Yegros’ prominent voice. Hailing from Buenos Aires and Paris, Mariana has taken global sounds, electronica, dancehall and soul and fused them with the folkloric styles of chamamé and cumbia that speak to her family’s roots in the rural rain forests of northeast Argentina. Read on and listen because this is a group to be watching out for!

K: What does the name “La Yegros” mean? How long have you been a band? Y: Yegros is my paternal last name. I decided to use it as my artistic name because I feel that its pronunciation has

strength and also represents my origins, of which I am very proud. The band formed in 2012 with the help of Beno Guelbert, a prestigious Argentine bassist. It was he who gave me the courage to carry out the project to express the album Viene de Mi live. Together with Beno, we began the search for the members that today make up the band- Gabriel Ostertag, Nico Deluca and David Martinez. Kesta: How would you describe your music and how does it come about? Y: My music is a mix of Latin American rhythms with electronic bases. When I compose a song, I do it in a way that is a bit formal and systematic. It’s not as if I sit in a studio to create or that I take sabbatical months, but rather the songs arise from me in moments when I’m immersed in everyday life. From there they are worked on with King Coya, my musical producer and co-composer. K: The sounds, lyrics and visuals in the video for “Trocitos de Madera” are so

artistic and interesting- what was the inspiration behind it? Y: I composed Trocitos de Madera in an everyday situation. While watching TV I saw a newscast with giant letters that took up the whole screen reporting, “a girl cries scraps of wood.” From that the refrain of the song was born and later I developed a story that was adapted to my own fantasy, arranged and produced by King Coya. Later came the video made by Flamboyant, displaying a cheerful and colorful aesthetic but also with the intention to call out against the abuse of nature; in this case wood. K: What kind of reception have you received in Europe? Is there a viable tropical/nu-cumbia scene happening there? Y: The reception in Europe is incredible! The audience sings along with us and it thrills us a lot. Their high level energy fuels us in every live show. Of course I see a viable tropical, nu-cumbia scene and see it growing gradually. The people enjoy these sensual

and rhythmic beats that transport them to Latin America, land of heat and flavor. K: What can someone who has never seen you before expect from your live shows? Y: The live show featuring songs from my first album, Viene de Mi, is super power. I have the fortune to be accompanied by Argentine musicians that feel the music in a very visceral way and are 100% present to the scenario we are creating while on stage. Our clothing is designed by another great Argentine artist, Ariel Mora, who manages to achieve sophistication and folklore simultaneously with his designs; a visual aesthetic that directly refers to the concept of the album. On our tours audiences can find colors, dancing that occurs spontaneously during the concert and a flowing, musical energy that interacts with the audience that explores liberation and happiness. █

Enrique Bunbury, aka, “El Licenciado Cantinas” is certifiable royalty in the DMV. The ex-Heroes Del Silencio frontman, had fans lined up in droves outside the Fillmore Silver Spring on Saturday, September 20th, hours before the doors opened. Fans all vied for the chance to be the first in line and front and center when Bunbury took to the stage. There was no opening band and the concert started promptly at 8pm, leaving many fans rushing to get there in time (including me!). I walked in during the second song which happened to be “El Club De Los Imposibles” one of my favorite Bunbury songs. The energy was palpable as fans young and old converted the concert into a karaoke night. Fans went especially crazy when mid-set Bunbury started the signature riff to “El Extranjero” a hymn that talks about feeling like a stranger everywhere you go and struggling to find a place to call home in the world. Bunbury also appeased the Heroes Del Silencio fans with a perfect rendition of “Deshacer el Mundo”. Of course it wouldn’t be a Bunbury show without the classic, “Lady Blue”, and “Si” which he played right before the encore. Actually fans demanded a second encore in which Bunbury played Bujias del Dolor, Sacame de Aqui, and El Viento a Favor. A perfect mixture of melancholy and satisfaction that only el Licenciado Cantinas can deliver. At the end of the night one lucky fan received the honor of Bunbury handing him his Palosanto Guitar pick. To quote that fan, “It was the best concert and best moment of my life so far!” Thanks Lalo, we can’t wait until next time either! █

The weather couldn’t have been better for the Prince Royce concert on Friday, August 29th at Wolf Trap. The night started off around 8pm with a DJ playing popular dance hits, hyping up the crowd as they anxiously awaited the arrival of Prince Royce. The Filene Center was packed with fans of all ages, but was primarily dominated by women and couples. When Royce took the stage around 9pm, the crowd went wild. The sound of screaming women and girls, one louder than the next, could be heard for miles. When the girls settled down enough to be able to hear the music, Royce began to serenade the crowd with fan favorites such as “Darte un Beso”, “Te Robaré “Soy el mismo”, and “Incondicional. Everyone swayed and danced as Royce performed his famous “Stand by me”. On the back lawn, couples everywhere were dancing, some were even dancing passionately by themselves. Some knew how to dance, and others… well, they had their own style, but they all had one thing in common, they all shared the same excitement and enthusiasm for the music. When the time came for Prince Royce to select a lucky lady to bring up on stage, the girls once again started screaming frantically waving their arms. One girl actually crawled up on stage and had to be removed by a security guard. Royce finally selected “the girl with the gray sweater” and the crowd went silent with disappointment that they weren’t the chosen ones. Before we knew it, the concert was over, but many people, including myself still had ganas to keep dancing to Royce. █

I recently connected with an acquaintance and we ended up kissing. I gave him my number but he never called. I eventually texted him and we saw each other again. In person he’s very sweet, romantic, and seems very interested in me. I know he is single and we like each other but I’m ready to give up for the simple fact he won’t initiate a call or ask me out on a proper date. My friends tell me to give it some more time and/or to initiate but I want him to make the effort too. Do you have any other ideas? -Losing Patience in the DMV

Dear Patience: I don’t blame you for starting to lose your patience if it feels like you are the one who has to make all the effort for a date to actually happen. But if you are confident that when you do spend time together he is clearly very interested in you, then it might be worth digging deep to find a little more patience before giving up on him. Next time you see him, when he is acting romantic and very interested, I wonder if you could ask him about his dating history, or get a sense of his general philosophy on relationships, or some insight about what he is currently looking for. Maybe he’s a sweet and shy guy who is not sure if you are that interested in him; or he may be commitment phobic and not at all interested in anything serious at the moment; or maybe he had a bad break up and is scared to put himself out there again. We could spend all day trying to guess what’s going on with him! However, mind-reading is never the way to go. So before jumping to conclusions about him and just assuming he is not interested, it might be worth going directly to the source. In addition to finding out about him, you could also give him an opportunity to change his ways by clearly letting him know about the things that are important to you, and what it is you are looking for (e.g. a phone call asking you out on a proper date!). Before just giving up on him completely, I think you can first have the (slightly uncomfortable) conversation with him. Whatever you find out, from his responses or his reactions to the conversation, will be really important information to have because it will tell you a lot about what kind of guy he is. Then you will have more data to make better decisions about how worthy of your patience he actually is. If you don’t get the response you were hoping for, you still win because you’ll make the decision to move on based on facts and not assumptions. Next time you are ready to dismiss the reliable, “no-games” nice guy or girl, think again! There’s nothing more satisfying than a drama-free relationship with complete trust and certainty that you are each other’s #1. █

DIA DE LOS MUERTOS

By: Rosario Garcia

exican’s love dead people. Let me rephrase, they love to celebrate dead people. While Halloween is used to scare and frighten, Day of the Dead is a time to celebrate happy and positive times for that beloved one that has passed. Each year on November 1st and 2nd, Mexicans build private altars called “Ofrendas” honoring those who have passed away using sugar skulls, marigolds, and the person’s favorite foods and drinks. These gifts are so that those who have passed can enjoy the things they once loved while they were still alive. It may sound creepy but it’s also a therapeutic way to grieve. Who doesn’t want to know that even after we pass away our friends and relatives are going to throw us a party every year making us our favorite food and drink and honoring our memory? Hell yes sign me up! Here are 10 reasons you should start celebrating Day of the Dead this year.
