ailing from Argentina, Rata Blanca has had a tumultuous career. Forming in 1986, the band went through significant lineup changes early on taking a few years to stabilize in both band members and sound. Although they struggled to get a start, the band had a record deal before they even had a stable singer. This is a testament to both their artistry and will to make music. They were able to successfully record their first album in 1986 despite these setbacks and have not slowed down much ever since. In recent years, Rata Blanca has experienced somewhat of a comeback as radio stations continue to play some of our favorite songs by them. By: Kala Fryman

fter two years since their last US tour, Spanish metal legends Mago de Oz are finally returning to Washington, DC for another epic night of metal and mayhem; and hopefully, *ahem*, no sound system issues! Following their 14th studio album release, Ilussia, Mago has been touring extensively throughout Europe and Latin America and are at last bringing their new sounds to satiate fans in the US. The last few years have not been easy for Mago de Oz as beloved vocalist Jose Andrea left the band in 2011, causing immense backlash. Andrea’s absence struck and angered fans; however it did not deter Mägo. Through their classic sound and powerful new vocalist Zeta, Mägo shows a renewed energy and that they are here for the long haul to continue making amazing music and have done so again with the new album Ilussia. If the band has been able to embrace change and move on, hopefully fans will be able to do so at this point as well. Although the sounds are somewhat different, Ilussia stands up to classic albums and maintains the band’s spirit and mystique. Mägo de Oz’s music has always been and will be a journey; an adventure from the past to the future. Their stories entice the imagination and transport us to other times and places (literally somewhere over the rainbow); yet bring us back to reality with universally relatable sentiments. Ilussia is a concept album about an abandoned and cursed circus that comes to life in the middle of a forest after a little girl stumbles upon it in a game of hide-andseek with her brother. Ilussia is reminiscent of Gaia II in terms of sound and has the substance that the 2012 release of Hechizos, Pocimas y Brujeria lacked in some ways. In it, listeners can hear a more polished Zeta who seems to have “found” his voice even more amongst

Mago’s classic celtic and folk metal. The subject matter is heavy, delightfully creepy and a breath of fresh air for us Mago fans that love their legacy of concept albums. Mago’s creativity and artistry stood out to me after I started getting into them and I love the fantastical worlds and modern retelling of historical accounts found throughout their concept albums. La Leyenda de la Mancha, Finisterra and the Gaia trilogy are particularly interesting as they both use elements of fantasy as a metaphor to explore themes of environmental destruction, politics, war, atheism and spirituality. Some of Mago’s most popular songs,”Fiesta Pagana” and “Molinos de Viento” can be found in these albums and are a staple at any Mago performance. One of my favorite albums is La Ciudad de los Arboles which was recorded in the middle of Gaia I and II as a break from two such intense albums and is hugely underrated. Many fans wrote it off as being too soft and nondescript, but that is actually what I love about it- it shows the versatility of the band from being able to go from thrashing riffs to more intricate and melodic metal. In terms of the concept, I feel that it strengthened the themes and imagery found in the Gaia trilogy by giving listeners more of a feel for Gaia’s protagonist Azzak’s world and eventual conquest. La Cuidad de los Arboles also showcases Patricia Tapia’s vocals more than other albums, which drew me in immediately with her haunting intro and outro “Espiritu del bosque.” Mago has been rocking for 25 years and counting and shows no signs of stopping. This will be one of the biggest concerts of the summer so don’t miss your chance to get in the pit! Show is on June 9th at the Howard Theatre in Washington, DC. Tickets and more information available at www.tickeri.com. █

We wanted to give you a taste of these classic songs so you can have a listen and be ready for the Rata Blanca concert coming to the Howard Theatre on May 4th, 2015! For tickets and information visit, www.tickeri.com! Rata Blanca - Our Favorite songs

Mujer Amante - What’s not to like!? This song is all metal and all romance. This song which was the second song off of “Magos, Espadas y Rosas” and single-handedly made Rata Blanca into an overnight success in Latin America and Europe. The song lyrics suggest a type of succubus woman has taken a hold of her prey during the night and marked him forever. La Leyenda del Hada y el Mago

- Also from the album, “Magos, Espadas, y Rosas” this song is hard rock legend. This song also uses a metaphor for women as nymphs as a lonely sorcerer looking for love and finds it in an enchanted forest with a beautiful nymph only to lose her and initiate a fight between good and evil.

Aun Estas en mis Sueños - This song

perfectly describes the feeling of going to bed thinking about a special someone and having dreams of falling in love with that person and having that feeling reciprocated.

Guerreros del Arcoiris - The single off of one of the most acclaimed Rata Blanca albums, “Guerreros del Arcoiris”. The song itself was ahead of its time bringing attention to saving mother earth and bringing attention to creating a better world for future generations. La Llave de la Puerta Secreta - Is

a newer track from 2005 and off of Rata Blanca’s 8th Studio album. The song is hard rock and features lyrics based on the Da Vinci Code a novel by Dan Brown.

Ella - Last but not least, one of our favorite songs is “Ella”. Off of “Rata Blanca VII the album was heavily influenced by modern metal, however there is something ethereal about this song which makes you want to be the “Ella” they are singing out. Who knew metaleros could be so romanticos? █

Straight out of high school, Fito began touring with several bands and soon produced his first solo album, “Del ‘63” which was released in 1984. The recording was put together with the help of some of Argentina’s most prominent musicians, including Daniel Wirtz, Fabián Gallardo, Tweety Gonzalez and Paul Dourge. The disc won him critical acclaim as a songwriter and helped lead to future projects, including a 1985 album, “Giros”. The “Giros” demo earned Fito some early praise by Luis Alberto Spinetta, which led to a partnership for Paez’ next album and a duet with Spinetta of “La La La” in 1986. This partnership proved to be very important as the two singers launched a tour that led Fito to other countries including a visit to Santiago, Chile.

critically acclaimed, however, it was Paez’ 1992 album, “El Amor Después

del Amor” that marked the pinnacle of his commercial success. The album sold more than 750,000 copies and when Paez toured to support it, he found himself playing to sold-out shows for 40,000 people. It made Fito an overnight success. As with any overnight success, this placed some serious pressure on Fito when it came time to release his follow up, “Circo Beat.” Despite having several hit songs on the album including the forever classic and my personal favorite, “Mariposa Tecknicolor,” the album had impossibly high expectations the album only sold 350,000 copies. Despite this setback, Fito was able to complete several other projects in the late ‘90s, including a live album, “Euforia” and 1998’s “Sabina & Paez: Enemigos Intimos”, with Joaquin Sabina. The last album was incredibly successful creating true artistry between the two singer songwriters. The year 1999 brought another balanced, superbly produced album, “Abre”. He also took home two Grammys at the first annual Latin Grammy Award in fall 2000. As for his personal life, Fito lived with Argentine actress Cecilia Roth for many years, with whom he adopted a child in 1999. In 2003, Paez experienced a bit of a music comeback with the album “Naturaleza sangre” which marked a return to his musical past, featuring appearances from Charly Garcia, Luis Alberto Spinetta, and Brazilian artist Rita

Páez got his first taste of production work with “Ey!”, which was released in 1988. Recorded in New York and Havana, it also showcased many of the musicians that he had worked with previously, including Guillermo Vadalá, Daniel Colombres and Osvaldo Fattoruso. It also featured the trumpeters and saxophonists of the group, Afrocuba. Less harsh than his previous recording, it was one of his most balanced records. “Tercer Mundo”, released in 1990, explores Latin American cultural influences and showed the harsh world of poverty and exploitation. It was also

Lee on the previously unreleased version of “Ojos Rojos”. At 40 years old, Paez found himself at his musical peak. The album “El mundo cabe en una canción” won the Latin Grammy Award for Best Rock Solo Vocal Album at the Latin Grammy Awards of 2007 marking yet another success in Fito’s career. In 2008 recorded, “No se si es Baires o Madrid”, in Madrid, Spain. He invited several important musicians, such as Pablo Milanés, Joaquín Sabina and Ariel Rot to participate. Fito has since released 7 additional albums, including a few compilation albums, and the latest “Rock and Roll Revolution (RRR)” in 2014. The album contains 11 songs which Fito claims to have

written and recorded in a month’s time. He remains connected to his many fans via social media regularly posting videos of new material he has recorded and playing it directly to them from his own home studio. He also shared a few cat memes here and there for good measure. Although it can be difficult to stay relevant after so many years in music, Paez manages to stay connected to his audience and his artistic desires, experimenting with new sounds, writing continuously and ferociously, collaborating with artists and connecting to his emotions in the raw way that only true rock stars can. Don’t miss your chance to see this living legend live at the Howard Theatre on June 12th, 2015. The concert will feature Fito Paez on piano playing his latest and classic hits. BACHATA

By: Sarah Barrie

ominican singer-songwriter and guitarist, Elvis Martínez, known to fans as “El Jefe de la Bachata” is considered to be one of the most important artists in the bachata genre in the last decade, and has sold records throughout the Dominican Republic, Central America, and the United States. A great lyricist, Martínez is known for his songs about love and suffering, which are expressed in his hit singles like “Maestra”,“Así te amo”, and “Tú me querías”.

By: Ellen Flores

hen you combine tropical sounds with passion you get a heated musical conception that’s as heated as the hot Colombian breeze. Celebrating over two decades of taking salsa to the world, Grupo Niche will be taking over the DMV this Friday, May 8 at The Palace Nightclub and you need to be at the show! Founded in 1980, Grupo Niche is more than a group, they are a family. Throughout the years the lineup has changed significantly. Originally founded by Jairo Varela and Alexis Lozano, the group’s many iterations have helped Grupo Niche become the force it is today. The current lineup is a big one. Lead by Elvis W. Angulo, Manuel Guerrero, Yuri Toro and Arnold Moreno comprise the vocal section of Grupo Niche. The instrumental portion of the group is formed by Ramon Benitez, Edgardo Manuel, Oswaldo Salazar, Carlos Zapata, Javier Bahamon, Douglas Guevara, Fabio Celorio, Juan M. Murillo “Juanito”, Francisco Ocoro “Pacho” and last but not least Luis Carlos Ochoa. With a group of this size it is truly a testament to the strong work ethic and clear communication lines between the members of the group. Their initial stages began in Cali, Colombia, where they recorded and released their first albums. Songs like “Buenaventura y Caney” and “Cali Pachanguero” catapulted Grupo Niche as one of the biggest salsa groups in Colombia, outranking the then dominating Fruko y sus Tesos salsa band. As they continued to grow and evolve their sound, Grupo Niche became known for their up-tempo and rigorous dance music that was a favorite in their live presentations. However, Grupo Niche also shined because of their counterpart; a slower, more romantic salsa sound known as “corta venas” (romantic heartbreak songs). In the corta vena catalogue songs like “Sin Sentimientos”, “Una Aventura”, “Hagamos Lo Que Diga el Corazón” and

“Duele Más” are some of the staples that make Grupo Niche the perfect balance of fast and seductive salsa with a slower, more romantic clave salsera (salsa beat). With their exponential growth and evolution of sound, Grupo Niche has created their own signature blend of music. Fusing salsa, Latin jazz, cumbia and bolero elements, they still continue to enjoy global success in a genre that is classic and current today. Grupo Niche has performed at some of the biggest salsa festivals in the world. This year they shared the stage at the epic 50th Anniversary of Salsa in Puerto Rico. This festival was held in Ponce, the southern city of Puerto Rico that is the home of salsa icons like Héctor Lavoe, Cheo Feliciano, Pete “El Conde” Rodriguez, Kike and Papo Lucca. In this event which held tribute to the best music of the genre, Grupo Niche shared the stage with a magnate lineup. Oscar D’León , Andy Montañez, Tony Vega, Tito Nieves, Los Bravos de la Fania: Ismael Miranda, Bobby Valentín, Roberto Roena, Richie Ray & Bobby Cruz. To be chosen to represent the best of a global genre is no small task, and as expected Grupo Niche turned out an epic performance that had the attending audience dancing non-stop to the beats of these iconic salsa giants. This month, The Palace in Woodbridge, becomes a salsa dance hall with Grupo Niche taking the stage on Friday, May 8th. Be prepared because to dance the night away to the classics that get your feet going and your heart racing with this Colombian blend of salsa that’s the perfect way to set your summer nights on fire! For tickets and more information, visit www.tickeri.com. █

Martínez began his professional music career in the mid-1990s. Upon signing with Premium Latin Music, a bachata label which also housed bachata super group, Aventura, he made his first full-length solo debut in 1998 with Todo se paga, which reached gold status, and earned him a “Revelación del Año” award, and a “Premio Estrella” award at the ACE Awards in New York. He released three additional albums under the label. Directo al Corazón (Straight to the Heart), released in 1999, included hits “Tú sabes bien” ( You know very well), and “Amada mía” (My Beloved). Tres Palabras (Three Words), was released two years later which included his hit song Maestra” (Teacher), inspired by a teacher who he was in love with as a boy. Así Te Amo (I Love You So) was released in 2003, winning Martínez a 2004 Casandra Award for Best Song of the Year. That same year he released his fourth album, Descontrolado (Out of Control) and was nominated for a Premio Lo Nuestro Award for Best Traditional Tropical Artist. Under Univision Records, Martínez released best selling album, Yo Soy Más Grande que El, featuring hit tracks such as “Tu Traición" ( Your Betrayal) and "Yo No Nací Para Amar" (I was not born to love). He later joined Universal Music Group, releasing La Luz de Mis Ojos (The Light of my Eyes) in 2007, which produced hit single, “Lento y Suave” (Slow and Smooth). Martínez’ most recent single “Tú Me Querías” ( You Loved Me) reached the top of the Tropical music charts within just a month of its release. “This song conveys everyday life, heartbreak and love,” explains the artist. "To write you have to feel, and everything I write in my songs I have felt at some point in my life." sense, although I do have my “header” songs I will change them suddenly depending on the occasion and the mood of the night. Every day I listen to new music and incorporate what I think can work in my sets. Playing live is pure joy, the hard work is usually done at home, in record stores, and selecting the songs. Kesta: What can people expect for your DJ set with Maracuyeah and Oskar in May? DJ Ali Gua Gua- The Maracuyeah girls and Anthology of Booty collective know how to make a great party!! People burst with happiness, and they just have a great time. They really achieve a multi-cultural cross over space with alot of Latin/female flavor full of amazing music. That is something very difficult to achieve!! They have my admiration and respect as djs / bookers and friends. You can feel the vibration of the dancefloor and that gives you chills, that is the dream of any DJ. It’s a great experience and I’m happy to be back playing with them and DJ Oskar! DJ Oskar

with these two awesome individuals to find out what we should expect at this next Maracuyeah fiesta on Saturday, May 16th at Judy’s Restaurant. Kesta: I love you as DJ Guaguis, you always know what to play to get people to dance, what music are you going crazy for right now? Ali Gua Gua- Thanks! That always changes and varies, but I’m very interested in percussion, i.e. African or Colombian music, I think its infallible and makes you want to move your body! And I have a soft spot for cumbia in general: villera, sonidera, Amazon, norteña, editada. I can’t say I have a favorite but anything cumbia combined with electronica drives me crazy. In this next edition of the epic Maracuyeah parties at Judy’s Restaurant (pupusas while you dance? Why yes, don’t mind if I do!) they will be featuring special guest DJ’s - Ali Gua Gua (from Kumbia Queers and Las Ultrasonicas fame), and DJ Oskar (from NYC Papi Juice fame). I chatted

Kesta: What is your formula to make people dance and have fun during your sets? DJ Ali Gua Gua- I really try to read the track and the party and try to analyze what they would like to listen to. In this

Kesta: So you are living in Brooklyn but are originally from DC? DJ Oskar: I’m originally from Honduras and I moved to DC when I was 9 (Specifically, Bethesda, MD). I went to an international school in MD and I had always been surrounded by other people from different places and one of the ways I connected with people was through music. Kesta: Tell us about your DJ style and how you got started. DJ Oskar: I had a radio show in college and I’ve always really valued music and as a way of building relationships with people. Growing up Central American and listening to a lot of rap and hip hop and pop, I always felt like my music taste was so different from the mainstream. DJing is very personal. It’s like you’re sharing a part of you. I’ll play everything in my sets from Selena to ballroom music to a Jersey club track. Kesta: What are your current musical projects? DJ Oskar: Papi Juice started about 2 years ago now and it started with my creative partner Adam Rhodes and it was born out of the frustration with traditional male gay spaces we felt invisible in those spaces and all of our beauty and our bodies and music and culture were never really seen or valued. We came together to create a space that was intentional and where people and especially queer and transpeople of color were celebrated and they would listen to the music that they wanted to listen to not just mainstream house music or mixed Merengue and hip hop and old R&B and sounds that are important. Don’t miss this mega tropi-fiesta on May 16th at Judy’s Restaurant in DC! █

This spring will showcase denim in all shades and silhouettes. Skinny fit jeans can be found in fabrics with slight stretch, or you may opt for a looser fitting distressed boyfriend style jeans. If you prefer jeans with more built-in shape try a boot-cut or flared jean. Depending on your look you can easily pair these bottoms with flat sandals, sneakers, loafers, or high heels. Denim can also be worn in the form of cropped jackets and vests, overalls, and of course shorts. Spice up your denim wardrobe by throwing in different colors and patterns as well. █

Numbers however, only tell part of the story. On the A side, we have “Money” Mayweather (as some like to call him). The bad boy that throws piles of cash around and makes sure to post it on Twitter. The highest earner among all athletes. The bragging, loudmouth persona, that sold millions of Pay-Per-View (PPV ) buys. Previously, the Pretty Boy that got robbed of an Olympic Gold Medal in ‘96. The boy, whose trainer and father went to prison, leaving him to pick up the pieces. The boy whose hard work and dedication pit him against boxing’s then brightest light,

Oscar De La Hoya. Pretty Boy Floyd won a decision against the Golden Boy Oscar De La Hoya in 2007, in a then recordbreaking PPV fight. Out of that ring, emerged “Money” Mayweather. The new A side, the new record breaker, the self proclaimed TBE, The Best Ever.

one or two fights. This is what makes it so compelling. For fighters, the good fight we all fight in private, they fight in the ring. In there, all the efforts, all the setbacks, all the stories leading up to the moment... in there, their lives unfold. If they are lucky, under lights for all of us to see.

On the B side, we have Manny “Pac-Man” Pacquiao. The fighting congressman from the Philippine’s Sarangani province. The devout man of God, the savior of his country’s poor. A band leader, movie actor and professional basketball coach in the Philippines. Previously, the skinny boy that ran away from home at age 14, in order to fight for survival in the streets of Manila. The boy who turned punches in bunches into Philippine Pesos to send to his mother. The boy who rose out of the slums through blood, sweat and tears and into that same light that graced Mayweather before. Oscar De La Hoya called it quits on his career, the night he was shocked by a hurricane force Pacquaio in 2008. Pac-Man the fighter of the decade, was made.

Jack Johnson, Jack Dempsey, Joe Louis, Sugar Ray Robinson, Max Schmeling, Rocky Marciano, Ali, Frazier, Leonard, Hearns, Duran, Mike Tyson, Julio Cesar Chavez... they all had the brightest lights of boxing shone on them in their time, just as De La Hoya did in his. In this sport, it sometimes happens, that the bright light divides. Mayweather and Pacquiao both took a part of Oscar’s light and shone with it. However, ever since those fights, the light of boxing has been divided in two. As times passes and all the details about previous failed negotiations, finger pointing, social media battles and even sales records fade into obscurity, one thing will be remembered for the ages.

Boxing’s biggest lights have always been reserved for truly special fighters indeed. Fighters rich in skills, and sometimes even richer in personas. Those public, smiling fronts, that hide their dark and difficult back-stories. While most of us conquer our obstacles in our day to day life, little by little, fighter’s lives very much depend on their struggles in the ring. I could fill a book with stories of boxers whose lives completely changed for better or for worse from just

...and it will be remembered that it was another legendary night. The night when Mayweather and Pacquiao, seemingly polar opposites, finally faced off and once again united boxing’s transcendent light. The night two legendary fighters, two merely mortal men equipped with iron wills, started closing their public lives before our very eyes... and boy did they shine. They shone bright, so bright! So bright, for us the world... to see! The fight will take place on May 2nd at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and will be available via Pay-Per-View 9pm EST. █

Sat. May 2: Atmosphere— w/B Dolan,

rom the outside, Sahara, the 16 year old from Potomac, Maryland may look like just an ordinary teenager, but she’s anything but. Aspiring pop singer, Sahara began singing when she was just three years old, belting out lyrics by her idol, Whitney Houston. Now an 11th grader and straight A student, Sahara just recently opened for Nicky Jam, and will be performing at Latin Explosion 2015 DMV on May 23rd alongside some of the biggest names in the Latin music industry such as Yandel, J Alvarez, Andy Andy, Alexis y Fido, Ivy Queen, Zion & Lennox, De La Ghetto, Angel & Khriz, Yowell & Randy, and more. Much like a handful of other aspiring young artists in recent years, Sahara started off on YouTube singing covers. Her rendition of Miley Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball”, has received over 17 thousands hits in under a year, and in 2013 was selected by Elite Daily as one of the ‘Top 5 Best Covers’ of the hit song. Sahara also performed covers for Zedd’s “Stay the Night,” and Katy Perry’s “Unconditionally,” both of which received thousands of hits. She said it was all of the positive feedback, along with the support from her friends and family that really fueled her to keep going. I recently had the opportunity to catch up with Sahara, and here’s what she had to say… KH: Where do you see yourself in 5 years? S: In 5 years, I see myself signed to a big recording label, headlining my own tour,

Tues. May 5: Of Monsters and Men— with a bunch of original music, just living out my dream, touring city to city and hopefully selling out venues and loving the life. KH: What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given? S: Be true to myself, and never forget who I am, and not let anyone’s words or opinions ever let me down, or bring to a point where I think that I can’t accomplish something. KH: Do you ever get nervous? S: I get nervous before I go on stage…I get butterflies in my stomach, and I worry about if I’m going to forget the words, or fall on stage…but really, once I get on stage, all the nerves go away, because I get so into it and feed of the crowd and I love it. KH: Who is your dream Latin artist to collaborate with? S: Prince Royce, definitely. I would love to collaborate with him, I love his music. KH: What motivates you? S: My family and my friends because they really encourage me. I feel like everyone has those moments where either they’re down or feel like they can’t do something because it’s too hard, or it’s not going to happen, but even when I get into the mindset where I’m like, ‘oh well maybe it won’t happen’, my family and friends are always able to motivate me to keep going and they really do inspire me so I am always able to look to them for encouragement or advice to keep going.

KH: Are you currently in school? Do you have plans on going to college? S: My school is really important to me. I’m a straight A student. I love learning, so I definitely will be continuing my education, finishing, and getting a degree.

Best known for their 2011 smash hit, “Little Talks”, Iceland quintet Of Monsters and Men have become indie folk-pop mainstays at festivals all over the world.(Doors open at 7PM, All Ages)

KH: Can you tell me more about your performance at Latin Explosion? S: I will be dancing and singing. I am working on my own original Spanish songs now. I’m not sure if they will be done by that time… I’m still going to sing other Spanish songs, but probably covers of them… I’m really trying to get together my own original songs.

a double blast of Minneapolis based acts in May. After Atmosphere on May 2, it’s time for legendary alternative group The Replacements. (Doors open at 7PM, All Ages)

KH: Any last message you would you like to send to readers? S: I think that everyone should follow the principle of always believing in themselves…Learn that you can do whatever you want as long as you believe in yourself, stay true to yourself, and always look to the future with a positive attitude. Sahara will be performing live at Latin Explosion 2015 DMV on May 23 at the Patriot Center in Fairfax, VA. Doors open at 5:30 pm, and the show starts at 7:00 pm, and tickets can be purchased via ticketmaster.com For more information about Sahara, visit, www.thisissahara.com. █

and explore themes of race and class in the US. Olmeca’s music and activism is a celebration of culture and unity while simultaneously providing an intelligent analysis of history and social, political and cultural struggles. His latest album, “Brown is Beautiful” is vibrant and powerful, and intentionally inspired a campaign for empowerment and being assertive with one’s roots and identity. Olmeca has developed a vast support network and following as an independent artist and as such it is no surprise that he is credited for supporting a new phase in Latin alternative music and American hip hop scene.

Los Angeles based MC, producer and activist Olmeca is no stranger to DC and is a visionary performer not to be missed. Academics, activists and everyday people appreciate Olmeca’s political, social and economic analysis told through stories, while music enthusiasts and hiphop lovers alike value the production quality, beats and flawless bilingual lyrical delivery. Growing up in the US with migrant parents, Olmeca’s reality of living between two distinct cultures reflects in his lyrics and sounds, which blend hip hop, Latin alternative and indigenous influences

Salvajes is a crew of writers, DJs, emcees, breakers, organizers and activists from Santa Ana, CA representing a socially conscious hip hop movement born out of Southern California’s chicano history and struggle. Salvajes describes their music as classic gritty boombap hip hop meets cultura, with a bilingual integration of artists assembled in Aztlan. The name Salvajes is significant to this collective as a way to take back and celebrate their appropriated culture- salvaje, or “savage” was a word once used to describe Mexicans as uncivilized, but the group draws on this word as a source of strength to describe their passion, love, skill and tenacity as a crew and also in their communities and personal lives. Seeking to break free from the oppression and reclaim their culture and space, Salvajes is deeply involved in community organizing in Orange County and uses hip hop with organizing to strengthen community identity and encourage leadership development. Salvajes strives to bring together the music that they love with the knowledge of what they are fighting for, to show the interconnectedness between the two. For those who are unfamiliar with Salvajes music and activism, the track “Soundtrack of the Movement” is a great starting point to get a feel for the group and gain some context.

Emcee Mic Hempstead’s flow is on point as he weaves the story of global revolutionaries and popular movements throughout history, and calls to action to organize and carry on the fight against capitalism and imperialism. Salvajes beats are classic old school West Coast hip hop and also feature samples of various sounds and influences from hiphop and indigenous styles. The night Bajo las Estrellas will also feature the sounds of DC’s own La SalvadoReina, Maracuyeah DJ collective and Leon City Sounds. Don’t miss out on what is sure to be an epic night- Saturday, May 30th at Judy’s Bar and Restaurant at 2212 14th St NW, Washington DC, 20009. For more information visit, www.kestadc.com. █

Los Crema Paraiso brings together the musical genius of Neil Ochoa (Si*Se, Chicha Libre), José Luis Pardo (Los Amigos Invisibles), and Álvaro Benavides (Pedrito Martinez Group) and are set to release their sophomore album, De Pelicula! on May 5th, 2015. This dynamic trio blends Venezuelan traditional music into jazz, rock, funk, electronica and exotic sounds from all over the world. With influences as diverse as Aldemaro Romero, Noel Petro, Tom Jobim, Medeski, Martin and Wood, Pink Floyd, Freddy Reyna, and The Police, Los Crema Paraiso pack an infectious energy that will make you dance in a way that you never have before. Jose Luis Pardo adds, “Our music sounds like a combination of high speed bossa nova with a jazzy modern waltz, and percussive atmospherics with a warmth and sweetness that only a mix of these elements can bring.” De Pelicula! is being released via Cutuprá Productions and offers a fine line up of classic Venezuelan songs, rock anthems and original tracks. Notable guest musicians include Argenis Brito from Sr. Coconut who sings the Tears for Fears’ cover “Everybody wants to rule the world,” Carol C from Si*Se who is her sexy dreamy self singing on Depeche Mode’s “Personal Jesus,” Andrea Echeverri from Aterciopelados who is almost unrecognizable racing through the fast paced Venezuelan traditional folk song “Currucha,” and Spanish singer Juan Rivas, who wrote the lyrics and sung in the original “La luz se apaga.” Do yourself a favor and add this album to your must listen to/buy list for the summer. █

Known for her previous collaborations with musicians like Gustavo Cerati, the Latin Grammy nominated singer’s latest album is an experiment with an indie-pop sound that includes electronic beats, synthesizers, acoustic and electric guitars layered over lyrics that touch upon family, fertility, faith, fear, and romance. Produced by Cristián Heyne, Panal was a top-selling album upon its release in Chile and is an emotionally intimate and revealing portrait of Nicole. The album contains the singles, “Baila,” “Romanticos,” and “Pequeñas Cosas Buenas.” On the making of the album Nicole notes, “I recorded the album while I was pregnant with my youngest daughter… and being a mother and going through the experience for a second time makes you see and feel things in a different light. At the same time, I also lost my mother during that period, so all those mixed feelings of profound loss, anticipation and happiness came out through my writing.” Nicole was previously signed to Madonna’s record label, Maverick, and has worked with Gustavo Cerati, Tito Dávila (Enanitos Verdes), Francisco González (Lucybell) and Pedro Frugone (La Ley) among others. Nicole directed the video for the album’s first single, “Baila,” and says she created the video to reflect “A dreamlike journey based on a childhood dream, which was to overcome my fears through music and dance.” Watch the video for “Baila” and check out Panal at your favorite digital store. █

LOVE

I’m dating this guy I really like, but he is very set about his views, especially about men and women, and I’m very liberal and feminist. How do you date an alpha male while still maintaining your feminista will? Feminista en DC As you know opposites do attract, but in order for this to work it will be very important that you set your boundaries from the beginning. To be very clear about what things you are flexible about and what your deal-breakers are. When we set our boundaries we teach others how to treat us. Even if he has specific views about gender roles, it is crucial for him to give you the respect of treating you as an individual and not lump you into a category. In order to build trust in the relationship you will need to feel that he wants to know you and that he can understand your perspective, and get where you are coming from. Even if in the end you agree to disagree, it is important that you feel heard and seen when you express your opinions and preferences. Without that you will not be able to truly emotionally connect with him. If his assumption as an alpha male is that the only person who ever needs to compromise and conform is the woman, then it would not be possible for that to develop into a relationship that meets your needs. It’s important for you to be able to remain authentic and true to yourself. You should never feel like you have to lose your identity in order to be with him, that is not sustainable and it will inevitably lead to conflict, hurt feelings, and unmet needs. My guess is that a stereotypical alpha male would feel threatened by a feminista, so if you have been open about your views and he is sticking around, maybe there is more to his story. So instead of making assumptions about each other and assuming you know what an “alpha male” thinks, or that he knows what a “feminista” thinks, stay curious and really get to know and understand each other as unique individuals. Getting to know each other’s worlds could lead to interesting new experiences. The key to success will be whether you can create enough safety and trust to withstand the differences. Your differences could potentially make you stronger, but if they lead to feeling dismissed, rejected or unseen in the relationship, that would be a recipe for unhappiness. █
