our

F all F und D rive !

Wow! It was a nail-biter til the very end. Were we going to make it - or not? With an extra 15 minutes into The Jazz Oasis and help from Kathleen Lawton, we made our goal. We are exceedingly grateful to each and every person who donated (and those who donated more than once!) It is because of you that our lights are on, discs are spinning and the cool sound of jazz is lofting over the air waves! Many thanks.

KCSM V olunteer R ock ! ( er , J azz !)

Once again we must extend our gratitude to our volunteer family. They answer our call - to answer your calls - rain or shine. To those who travel from great distances, we applaud you! For those who come in multiple times, you deserve our humblest thanks. Without you, we wouldn't be able to have a successful pledge drive. We hope you enjoyed yourselves and found it rewarding. If you've never volunteered, please consider it in the future You'll met the staff and a lot of great jazz-lovers right in your own backyard.

Since 1959, host Richard Hadlock has been improvising on historical themes and bringing forth worthy performers—from Armstrong to Zorn. Each Sunday, we may find Annals in Europe, Asia, Latin America or Back of Town anywhere.

Monday at 9 pm

10/1 Tomasz Stanko

Trumpeter/Composer Tomasz Stanko was an anchor of the jazz scene in Eastern Europe since the 1960’s. We'll explore the several distinct and influential periods of his career, including his work with pianists Krzysztof Komeda and Adam Makowicz collaboration.

10/8 Toshiko Akiyoshi (small group recordings)

Pianist and composer Akiyoshi’s influence and renown as a big band leader have given her a specific fame that unfortunately obscures some of her other fine contributions to the world of jazz: her early career small group albums.

10/15 Henry Threadgill

When Henry Threadgill won the Pulitzer Prize, there was a big collective smile in the jazz world. A talented woodwind player based in free idioms, his works have not only pushed the envelope but changed the basic rules of engagement between improvising musicians.

10/22 Joe Temperley

Saxophonist Joe Temperley was the anchor for many legendary big bands and one of the finest solo voices, with an effortless singing sound, superb phrasing, and a style that could handle modern language and rhythm without sacrificing the roots of swing.

10/29 Arthur Rhames

A legend of the underground jazz scene in NY, Rhames was a dedicated prodigy with staggering technique and expressive capabilities on electric guitar, piano, and tenor sax.

JAZZ Night in America with christian mcbride Tuesday at 9 pm

10/2 Up and Down the Mississippi with Bill Frisell

Bill Frisell, Greg Osby, Craig Taborn and Rudy Royston explore music form New Orleans jazz and Delta blues to Bob Dylan and Bix Beiderbecke in “Up and Down the Mississippi: Traveling Highway 61.”

10/9 The Lush Life of Billy Strayhorn

While composing some of the most harmonically rich jazz of its time, Billy Strayhorn was an outlier in that he led an openly gay life as a black man in the 1940s, an era rife with homophobia and racism. Discover his music, and a rare archival tape of Strayhorn himself.

10/16 Erroll Garner

Pianist Erroll Garner served as a bridge from the height of the smoky bebop era to sold out concert hall solo concerts. Jazz Night in America traces Garner’s origin story, and brings you highlights from a live concert with the young piano interpreter, Christian Sands.

10/23 Grover Washington: Transcending Smooth Jazz

What Grover Washington Jr.’s saxophone sound represents is soul, plain and simple, though it’s often been associated with another word: “smooth.” A lot of musicians have some choice words to say about that, starting with Washington himself.

10/30 Artemis: The Super Group

Cecile McLorin Salvant, Ingrid Jensen, Renee Rosnes, Anat Cohen, Melissa Aldana, Norkio Ueda, and Allison Miller… together…on stage… at the Newport Jazz Festival.

piano jazz WITH marian mcpartland Wednesday at 9 pm

10/3 Chucho Valdes

In this episode of Piano Jazz from 2000, Chucho Valdes and host Marian McPartland share a love of pianist Bill Evans, and in tribute they create their version of Waltz for Debby. Valdes also treats listeners to his composition Claudia.

10/10 Lee Konitz

A former member of the Miles Davis “Famous Nonet,” Lee Konitz is the foremost saxophonist in the cool style of jazz. He is also a composer, arranger and teacher. While his very first instrument was a clarinet, he favored tenor sax and then made his way to alto.

10/17 Esperanza Spalding

Bassist Esperanza Spalding scored a surprise win for Best New Artist at the 2011 Grammy Awards and went on to win two additional Grammys. On this 2008 Piano Jazz, Spalding brings her neo-soul style to a set of standards with the aid of pianist Leo Genovese.

10/24 Red Richards

A strong prebop pianist veteran of the swing era who was three days short of his 79th birthday at the time of this Piano Jazz, Red Richards sounded in top form. Underrated through the decades, his conversations are full of rarely-heard anecdotes and fresh material.

10/31 Joe Williams

Williams easily charms McPartland during his appearance on this 1991 Piano Jazz. They do Who She Do and touching renditions of Embraceable You, Just Friends and I’m Confessin’.

JAZZ PROFILES WITH NANCY WILSON Thursday at 9 pm 10/4 Artie Shaw

Clarinetist/bandleader Artie Shaw (1910-2004) was one of the most admired instrumentalists of the twentieth century, matching an immaculate technique to a clarinet sound that was indescribably beautiful. Shaw will always be remembered as one of the most important musicians of the swing period.

10/11 John Lewis

Though aligned as a cooperative, the principle architect of the Modern Jazz Quartet’s sound was always pianist and musical director John Lewis (1920-2001). A rather reserved man whose subtle brand of music making reflected his somewhat reticent personality, Lewis was a powerful - if underrated - figure in jazz for over forty-five years.

10/18 Billie Holiday

Billie Holiday was the consummate jazz singer. She could take any song and make it her own. She could re-work a melody, sing a lyric with impeccable diction, add her unique phrasing and embrace it with the raw emotional intensity of her life experience. Billie’s personal battles are legendary -with a racist society, with men, with drugs- and it was that pain that fueled her songs.

10/25 Pianist/Composer Horace Silver

Pianist Silver was a prolific composer who put soul in the funky, hard-bop style that he helped define in the mid ‘50s. He combined memorable melodies with driving rhythms to create several jazz staples, including Song For My Father, Doodlin’, Senor Blues, and Opus de Funk.
