Since 1959, host Richard Hadlock has been improvising on historical themes and bringing forth worthy performers—from Armstrong to Zorn. Each Sunday, we may find Annals in Europe, Asia, Latin America or Back of Town anywhere.

Grover Washington, Jr. The Bad Plus
IJazz Night in America kept up with The Bad Plus as it made this momentous transition: at Orrin Evans’ home in Philadelphia, where he raced to get up to speed; in a Brooklyn studio, during sessions for its album Never Stop II; and at Jazz at the Bistro in St. Louis, Mo., where Evans made his public debut with the band. In this show we’ll hear music from that explosive set, and reflections from Evans as well as the remaining founders of The Bad Plus, bassist Reid Anderson and drummer Dave King.

Jazz Night in America celebrates forty years of the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal, considered to be the world’s largest jazz festival. André Ménard, the co-founder and artistic director, shares historic performances and hilarious tales from the festival’s storied history, including Astor Piazzolla’s first North American performance, launching Diana Krall to jazz stardom, and unforgettable concerts with Dave Brubeck, Oscar Peterson, and more.

He celebrated his 80th birthday this year — and released an acclaimed album, Vanished Gardens, featuring singer-songwriter Lucinda Williams with his band The Marvels. In this episode of Jazz Night in America, we’ll get a taste of that collaboration, along with choice moments from Lloyd’s recent appearances at Jazz at Lincoln Center. And we’ll join Jazz Night producer and writer Alex Ariff as he pays a visit to Lloyd’s home and sanctum in the mountains near Santa Barbara, Calif. We’ll hear portions of their conversation, as they sit on a bench near the ocean, touching on ancestral legacies and present realities. “I’m an elder now,” Lloyd says almost tentatively, as if still making peace with the idea.

Bop, Jump & Swing! Join all of your favorite on-air hosts as they Bop, Jump & Swing into our Fall Pledge Drive. We're going to have some great special programming such as a Charlie "Yardbird" Parker on Friday, August 30th from 2-6pm. Jesse "Chuy" Varela will take you through the career of Cuban music sensation Ben More on Sunday, September 1st from 2-6pm. We'll celebrate the 80th Anniversary of Blue Note Records on Friday, September 6th beginning at 7am, and move into an Art Blakey Special beginning at 10am. On Sunday, September 8th we'll feature Braziliam legend Joao Gilberto on The Latin Jazz Show beginning at 2pm. We hope you'll tune in for the variety, history and great sounds of jazz!
