THE ANNALS OF JAZZ WITH RICHARD HADLOCK Sundays at 7 pm

The sound of surprise describes both jazz itself and the enduring premise of "The Annals of Jazz." Since 1959, host Richard Hadlock has been improvising on historical themes and bringing forth worthy performers—from Armstrong to Zorn. Each Sunday, we may find Annals in Europe, Asia, Latin America or Back of Town anywhere.

Greetings from Nashville, Tennessee

Host Christian McBride flies to Nashville, where country is king, to report on the thriving jazz scene — from Rudy’s Jazz Club, to The Nashville Jazz Workshop to a venue called 3rd and Lindsley, where the bassist himself, sits in with the Monday night regulars, The Time Jumpers.

Philadelphia is For Lovers. Jazz Night in America presents selections from a world premiere, commissioned work featuring versatile guitarist Nels Cline with his 17-piece “Lovers” ensemble, unpacks these arrangements and tags along with Cline on some of his research trips to the “City of Brotherly Love.”

CH-CH-CHANGES!

Ch-ch-changes for this Summer! Melanie Berzon, longtime Operations Director and host of Jazz in the Afternoon is retiring after 46 years in radio, 26 of them spent with the KCSM family. We will sure miss you, Mel! Jayn Pettingill begins hosting Jazz in the Afternoon on Thursdays in July as well as Leslie Stoval moving into the Friday afternoon slot. Jazz Night in America is moving to Monday nights at 9, and I'm very sad to see Piano Jazz, Jazz Profiles and Patrick Wolff's show Have You Heard sun-setting this Summer. But, the good news is that The Jazz Oasis Tuesday through Friday hosts Leslie Stoval, Pete Fallico and Greg Bridges, and Saturday host Michael Burman will have an extra hour 9-10PM to stretch out in their specialty. Look for Pete to bring on the Hammond B3s in The Doodlin' Lounge, Greg Bridges to move more to the outside in his hour, and Michael Burman will fly over to Europe and peek into the scene over there! You can always e-mail me with your thoughts and feedback: alisa@kcsm.net And don’t forget to join us at Melanie’ going away Retirement Party Concert on Monday, July 8th at 7:30PM at the Freight and Salvage in Downtown Berkeley. It’s the dream lineup of a lifetime, all on one stage! The Tammy Hall Trio featuring Ruth Davies and Ruthie Price; vocalists Barbara Dane and Melanie Demore; The V-Note Ensemble; and The Montclair Women’s Big Band, under the direction of Ellen Seeling. Wow! Get your tickets now at www.thefreight.org and we’ll see you there.

Thanks for Supporting our Fiscal Year-End Pledge Drive

We are exceedingly grateful to each and every person who donated (and those who donated more than once!) A big thank you to our magnificent volunteers who give their time....time and again. It is because of everyone that our lights are on, discs are spinning and the cool sound of jazz is lofting over the air waves! We can't thank you all enough. Now, we're back to the music!
