12/3 Lucky Thompson

From the 1940’s through the 1960’s, Lucky Thompson shaped a highly personal approach to bebop, developed a strong voice as a composer and explored a whole new style of playing on the soprano saxophone. In the ‘70s he quit playing altogether, and missed some of the late-career accolades enjoyed by his contemporaries, but his music is as creative and beautiful now as it ever was.

12/10 Andrew Cyrille

From his early work with Cecil Taylor in the 1960s through his current appearances lighting up the performances and recordings of rising stars, Andrew Cyrille has been one of the leading percussionists in the free idiom. His versatility and dedication have kept him on the front lines of jazz progress for half a century.

12/17 Julian Lage

One of the true prodigies in jazz, guitarist Julian Lage has been performing and recording since a very young age, but over the last few years, his voice as a composer has deepened and matured to the point that he is appreciated as one of the greats of modern improvised music.

12/24 Louis Smith

With two Blue Note records and a stint in Horace Silver’s quintet under his belt, Memphis Bebop Trumpeter Louis Smith seemed destined for stardom, but chose a life as an educator instead, and was an influential figure in the thriving jazz education community of Michigan.

12/11 Charles Lloyd at 80

This year, saxophone legend Charles Lloyd turned 80. To celebrate, Jazz Night in America made a Charles Lloyd mixtape from four performances Lloyd gave over the past decade with three different bands: his Quartet, The Marvels featuring Bill Frisell, and with Lucinda Williams. We also visit with Lloyd at his home in Santa Barbara, California.

12/18 Happy Holidays!

It’s the Holiday Season, and Jazz Night in America has you covered with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and special guests performing holiday classics.

12/5 Clark Terry

One of the great innovators and educators in jazz, Clark Terry (1920–2015) was celebrated for his technical virtuosity and swinging lyricism. Piano Jazz brings you this 1994 episode, which captures the master trumpeter’s magic and humor as he and host Marian McPartland play The Snapper and Wham.

12/12 Frank Morgan

Alto saxophonist Frank Morgan brings his sweet and soulful tone to a quartet setting with host Marian McPartland, bassist Gary Mazzaroppi and drummer Glenn Davis on this 2004 episode of Piano Jazz. His alto honks, flutters, flies and cries on tunes including Blue Monk, Billie’s Bounce, In a Sentimental Mood and Goodbye.

12/19 Julian Lage

This episode of Piano Jazz features guitarist Julian Lage, recorded in 2005 when the guitar prodigy was just 18. Lage joined host Marian McPartland and bassist Garry Mazzaroppi for this set of standards from Hoagy Carmichael, Sammy Cahn, Rodgers and Hart, and more.

12/26 George Shearing & Steve Allen

On this very special Piano Jazz dating back to 1991, Marian shares the stage with Pianist/ Composer George Shearing and all around Showman/Comedian/Pianist/Composer Steve Allen, at the very first Irving S. Gilmore International Keyboard Festival in Kalamazoo.

12/6 Nat Adderley

Nat Adderley was a fine trumpet player. But he spent most of his career in the shadow of his older brother, Julian “Cannonball” Adderley. Nat ran the band business and wrote many of their hits. When Cannonball died, Nat carried on, not only with the band, but also with the family tradition of educating the next generation.

12/13 Mary Lou Williams

Pianist/Composer/Arranger/Bandleader Mary Lou Williams achieved and maintained a status that many women in jazz found elusive: unwavering respect from male colleagues as a musical equal. Her accomplishments are many as arranger and pianist with Andy Kirk and his Twelve Clouds of Joy, with her own small groups, and with the be-bop artists of the ‘40s. Throughout, she was always—as Duke Ellington once said—“perpetually contemporary.”

12/20 The Village Vanguard

The influential 83-year-old club has hosted the most important figures in jazz from giants like Monk, Miles, and Coltrane to stars of today like Joshua Redman and Wynton Marsalis. It has been the setting for some of the best live recordings in jazz.

12/27 Sarah Vaughan

Musicians and audiences alike marveled at the ease with which vocalist/pianist Sarah Vaughan moved up and down her four-octave range, turning even the most mundane songs into operatic riffs. Her sound possessed a full-bodied purity, with an approach not unlike an instrumentalist. Early in her career, “Sassy” cut her teeth on bebop, performing with Billy Eckstine, Dizzy Gillespie, and Charlie Parker. She also ventured into the pop world, recording hits such as Broken-hearted Melody, Day-O, and Send in the Clowns.
