L abor D ay W eekend O n J azz 91! On Labor Day weekend, KCSM Jazz 91, honors the hardworking people of this nation with specials galore! Chuy Varela and Harry Duncan kick off the festivities on Friday, August 31st, from 2-6pm with a 50th anniversary celebration of Tower of Power. The party continues on Saturday, September 1st, when Sonny Buxton and Melanie Berzon, honor Cannonball Adderley, Stan Getz, and others, on Mid-Day Jazz from 10am-2pm. Then Dick Conte and Kathleen Lawton pick up the baton and praise the piano players on Jazz in the Afternoon. On Sunday, from 10am to 2pm, Clifford Brown Jr. and Keith Hines, commemorate the legacy of the Clifford Brown—Max Roach Quintet. Our Labor Day Weekend Celebration concludes Sunday afternoon on Latin Jazz, when Chuy Varela and Chris Cortez, hail Puerto Rico and its people, in their struggle to rebuild the island after Hurricane Maria. Solidarity Forever!
THE ANNALS OF JAZZ WITH RICHARD HADLOCK Sundays at 7 pm
The sound of surprise describes both jazz itself and the enduring premise of "The Annals of Jazz." Since 1959, host Richard Hadlock has been improvising on historical themes and bringing forth worthy performers—from Armstrong to Zorn. Each Sunday, we may find Annals in Europe, Asia, Latin America or Back of Town anywhere.

Frank Strozier
One of the great bebop stylists of the 1960s, alto saxophonist Frank Strozier played with many of the masters of his era, including Miles Davis, Booker Little, Shelly Manne, and Oliver Nelson, but quit playing and dropped from the scene in the 1970s, leaving the jazz world wanting more.
8/13 Masahiko Togashi
Masahiko Togashi was one of the most heavily recorded Japanese jazz musicians, a percussionist with an idiosyncratic sound who was a master of the freer forms. A spinal injury prevented him from using his legs and limited his ability to travel and tour, but his talent was such that many international musicians made the trip to Japan to record and play with him, including Steve Lacy and Gary Peacock.
8/20 Anachronic Jazz Band
As much a great thought experiment as a successful band, the Anachronic Jazz Band is a formation of French jazz musicians that play classic bebop repertoire by Thelonious Monk and Charlie Parker, but in the style of late 1920’s and early 1930’s traditional jazz.
8/27 Ernie Henry
One of the few bebop alto saxophonists who didn’t sound like Charlie Parker, Henry was a favorite of Thelonious Monk and Kenny Dorham, both of whom he made classic records with.

Harlem River Drive: Eddie Palmieri
Jazz Night in America presents the Latin jazz legend’s Harlem River Drive project featuring an 18-piece orchestra recorded in (where else, but) Harlem! Eddie and the band trace the genesis and commercial failure of the 1972 cult album, and how its message is still relevant today.
8/14 The Ray Charles Songbook
At age 21, trumpeter and music director Kenny Rampton (of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra) launched his touring career with a nine-month stint in Ray Charles’ band. In this episode, Rampton honors his former bandleader by presenting the most authentic Ray Charles experience possible.

The primary job for a traditional jazz drummer is to make sure the music doesn’t speed up or slow down too much. But drummer Allison Miller does more than just keep time. She’s dedicated her life to a distinctive style of playing called melodic drumming. Hear all about her approach, her influences and how female empowerment is thriving in the jazz community.

Jazz Night in America host Christian McBride flies to Nashville to report on the thriving jazz scene — from Rudy’s Jazz Club, to The Nashville Jazz Workshop to a venue called 3rd and Lindsley, where the bassist himself, sits in with the Monday night regulars, The Time Jumpers.

Rachel Z
Pianist/composer Rachel Z grew up in a musical family. Her mother taught her classical voice and opera, but she found her own sound in the jazz and rock worlds. On the keys, she is lightning-quick and her percussive yet lyrical approach enhances her technique.
Jess Stacy
This week’s Piano Jazz is with guest Jess Stacy (1904–1995), who came out of retirement to appear on the show in 1982. One of the leading pianists of the swing era, Stacy had a prolific career before stepping back from the music world in the 1950s.

Vibraphonist Stefon Harris is one of the most innovative and impressive artists in jazz, blazing new trails on vibraphone and marimba. While much of his music is on the cutting edge, he has a strong sense of tradition and his technical facility knows no bounds.

Piano Jazz remembers Marlene VerPlanck (1933–2018), who died from cancer this year at age 84. One of the finest interpreters of American Popular Song, VerPlanck’s artistic sensitivity made her a favorite of songwriters and listeners alike.

Pianist Gene Harris (1933 – 2000) was an integral part of the well-known group The Three Sounds trio. After a brief hiatus in the 1970s, he formed a new group and also made his way as a solo act.

Tommy Flanagan
Pianist Flanagan’s soft-spoken manner reflected his quietly understated playing. Known for his style and technique, he was one of bebop’s most important pianists, though his devotion as an accompanist resulted in his being somewhat underrated as a soloist.

For nearly 50 years, Betty Carter was an irrepressible and incomparable practitioner of jazz vocal tradition. She was a pure jazz singer whose strong musical style and instrument-like voice was keenly original and distinct. Explore Carter’s many sides and talents.
