Ralph Lalama

A legend in the New York jazz world, tenor saxophonist Ralph Lalama has been a featured member in big bands. In his small group work, he blasts through a gruff and swinging approach to hard bop that speaks the language of jazz without resting in cliche.

Tomasz Stanko

Trumpet player and composer Tomasz Stanko has been an anchor of the jazz scene in Eastern Europe since the 1960’s. In the last 20 years, a series of intense and haunting releases for ECM have brought his music across the world.

8/15 Toshiko Akiyoshi (small group recordings)

Although pianist and composer Akiyoshi's influence and renown is as a big band leader, some of her other fine contributions to the world of jazz include recording albums that highlighted her Bud Powell-inflected piano playing and her ability to craft elegant and interesting originals.

8/22 Henry Threadgill

When Henry won the Pulitzer Prize this year, there was a big collective smile in the jazz world. A talented woodwind player, his works since the early 1980’s have not only pushed the envelope but changed the basic rules of engagement between improvising musicians.

8/29 Joe Temperley

Joe Temperley, who passed away on May 19th of this year, was the longtime baritone saxophonist for the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. He was the anchor for many legendary big bands, was one of the finest solo voices in the history of the instrument and a style that could handle modern language and rhythm without sacrificing the roots of swing.

Jazz Loft DC Jazz Loft Trios

Jazz has its capital cities: major gathering places like New York, Chicago and New Orleans. But the music manages to live plenty well in many other places too. What goes into those smaller ecosystems to enable jazz to thrive? How do talented musicians make it happen? Tune in for highlights from CapitalBop’s warehouse loft stage at the 2015 DC Jazz Festival.

The Jay and Kai Project

Jazz Night in America presents the music of trombonist J. J. Johnson curated by Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra trombonist Vincent Gardner. Gardner invites his section partner Elliot Mason to tackle material from the “Jay and Kai”project, which featured trombonist Kai Winding. We hear from both Gardner and Mason about what made this project so special.

Multiple Grammy Award-winning saxophonist David Sanchez weaves threads of Latin American and North American jazz into a colorful tapestry. On this 1998 Piano Jazz, bassist John Benitez, drummer Adam Cruz, and host McPartland join Sanchez in a quartet to perform My Shining Hour and The Way You Look Tonight.

8/17 Marty Napoleon

Pianist Marty Napoleon (1921–2015) came from a musical family. He played with The Memphis Five, Charlie Ventura's Big Four, Louis Armstrong’s All Stars and led his own trio. On this 1992 Piano Jazz, he solos on Over and Over, and McPartland joins in for All of Me.

8/24 Norah Jones

Vocalist Norah Jones has a smoky, sweet voice that makes standards sound not only revived, but completely new. In 2003, the year she was McPartland’s guest on Piano Jazz, she won her first Grammy Award for her debut album, Come Away with Me. Jones brings her warm vocals to Hoagy Carmichael’s The Nearness of You.

8/31 Walter Davis, Jr.

Pianist Walter Davis, Jr. (1932 – 1990) spent more than four decades contributing to the development of jazz history. Shortly after sitting down with McPartland for Piano Jazz in 1990, this great giant in the jazz world passed away. One of the great bebop stylists of his time, Davis plays his own tune, Backgammon and joins McPartland for a tribute to one of his main influences with Blue Monk.
