REAL WINNIPEG WEDDING

V A N E S S A A N D A R I E S ’ love story could

be the script for the next Hollywood romantic comedy. They met way back in 1989 on the first day of kindergarten, but never spoke to each other growing up. Aries always had his eye on her, though: “She was the smart and popular one, and I was the class clown.”

It wasn’t until grade 10 that they shared a lunch outside in the rain, and Aries asked her to be his girlfriend. Almost 10 years later, he had another important question to ask. On their trip to Paris, nearby the Fontaines de la Concorde, Aries pulled out a written out speech from their favourite movie, the Hangover. Still the class clown, he read the speech in the same monotone voice, getting a laugh out of Vanessa before taking a knee and asking her to marry him.

METALLIC APPLIQUÉS

"Metallics are a great way to add interest to your wedding cake and are right on trend for this season. The use of 24k gold leaf appliqués were added to give a little glitz and glamour to this bold and dramatic design. Don’t be afraid to have a little fun with silver and gold metallic accents to add a little flair to your wedding cake." KAYLA, LAUGH LOVE CAKES

COLOUR CONTRAST

"I knew that I wanted the flowers to take centre stage on this cake, so I stuck with a rich chocolate fondant background to make the pastel shades really pop. The height and rich colours add drama, and I think this palette could work well for almost any season. That being said, by simply adjusting the floral colours, you immediately transform the cake." MICHELLE, HIGH TEA BAKERY

SOFT BUTTERCREAM

“We chose to do a soft palette of colors to enhance the natural beauty of the flowers that surround the cupcake tower. Buttercream was piped onto the cupcakes in a rosette pattern instead of the traditional swirl, adding a sense of Flowers by Natural Touch Floral Design

FROM THE MENU LARTERS AT ST. ANDREWS GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB Taste-testing this venue’s finest dishes? We were there in a heartbeat! Text by Maria Kenney Photos by 100 Acre Woods Photography

I must say, driving along sunny River Road into Larters at St. Andrews is a lovely way to spend an afternoon. Even lovelier is knowing that there’s a world class meal (or six) waiting for me at the end of the line. When I received the invitation to taste-test this venue’s top dishes, I was curious to see if they would live up to Larters’ strong reputation for delicious food. As you might guess, they did not disappoint!

LIKE MOST GIRLS WHO WORK IN THE WEDDING INDUSTRY, Jaclyn

had a picture of an “unattainable” engagement ring–the ring of her dreams if money were no object. She showed the picture to Adam, being sure to impress that she was fine with whichever ring she ended up with, so long as it was from him. One evening, Adam called Jaclyn into another room. There he was on one knee with a little box in his hands, and as she held her breath to see what he was about to offer, out popped none other than the exact ring she had only dreamed of slipping onto her finger.

aclyn, a wedding planner by profession, had no trouble pulling together their wedding with exactly a year to plan. She found her stunning gold dress online and ordered it locally without even trying it on. Her toughest decision was keeping it to the simple event it was, with handwritten vows, local musicians, and an intimate guest list of 55.

This Page The bridal party held lush bouquets with trailing ribbons and lots of greenery; The bride designed their own custom stationery suite. Opposite Clockwise From Top Right The sweets table included a cake with edible gold dust; Adam's groomsmen were looking dapper in custom designed suits from Eph Apparel; Centrepieces and linens suited the jewel colour tone colour palette perfectly; The couple paused for a moment in their busy day to pose for photos in front of a greenery wall in the Exchange.

ennifer and Miguel met in junior high and, 10 years later on a trip to Disney World, they got engaged. A romantic at heart, Jennifer started searching for the perfect wedding gown that was also rich in symbolism, and she didn’t have to look any further than the Disney Princess line from Alfred Angelo. Jennifer chose the Princess Jasmine gown, and the couple pulled together an elegant wedding fit for a, well, princess.

quickly became friends, but it took them over a year to realize that they’d met each other before. Morgan was telling Avital about his sister’s improv group, when Avital realized she’d been to one of her shows three years before. She cut in, telling Morgan all about how there was a sign saying, “Wink and you get in for free!” so she winked at the young guy running the ticket booth. As he was listening, Morgan went white as a sheet. He remembered that moment too—he was the young doorman. He had spent all night watching “the girl with the great laugh.” The couple exchanged rings at a Secret Garden inspired wedding at the Fort Garry Hotel, and the rest is history.

This Page A beautiful chuppah was decorated to match the garden theme; Each place setting held a few sprigs of lavender; Guests found their escort cards attached to old keys; Baby's breath centrepieces looked like clouds at every table. rue love knows no bounds, and for Shoshannah and Rob, those bounds happened to be a few thousand kilometres of land and ocean. Four years into their relationship, Shoshannah spent a semester in Sri Lanka for her practicum, and Rob took their time apart as an opportunity to visit a jeweler by himself. There, he laid eyes on a ring that was without a doubt meant for her, and he bought it on the spot. The only problem? Shoshanna was on an island in the middle of the Indian Ocean, and Rob was still in Winnipeg. With that, he booked one long, 30 hour flight and surprised Shoshannah with the ring and a heartfelt proposal.

THE RING SPARKLING SAPPHIRE If diamonds are a girl’s best friend, then sapphires are a girl’s classy older sister. Text by Maria Kenney Photo by Brittany Mahood Photography Ring by Bijou Treasures

Ever since Prince William proposed to Kate Middleton with an enormous 12-carat oval cut sapphire surrounded by 14 diamonds, sales of sapphire engagement rings have skyrocketed. As you might know, though, the ring originally belonged to William’s mother, the late Princess Diana who, at the time, was making a very bold and avant garde statement by straying from the traditional diamond. Blue sapphires represent loyalty and faithfulness, and for these reasons sapphire engagement rings are full of rich symbolism and mixed meaning, delicately walking the line between tradition and innovation.

COTTON POUFS

and AN ANTIQUE BROOCH

Cotton certainly isn’t the first thing we might think of when dreaming up bouquets, but our over-saturated wedding brains love a good surprise. With a great bang for your buck, cotton adds that soft textural element and lends itself equally to rustic outdoor affairs, white winter weddings, or any event with a playful atmosphere. Whether you plan to add a few whimsical poufs or go all out with a handful of strictly cotton, you’ll have a durable bouquet that will last you through all the bumps and fingerings of your big day. BEAUTY SPOTLIGHT HOW TO ACHIEVE A BOLD BRIDAL LOOK Sarah is the founder and lead makeup artist at 2 Chicks & a Bag of Makeup, a Winnipeg based company offering on-site makeup services for any occasion you would like to look your best. Makeup and Text by Sarah, 2 Chicks & a Bag of Makeup Hair by Feana (F.A.C.E. Makeup System) Photos by Brittany Mahood Photography Model Swish Model Management

SKIN For coverage, I used FACE Stockholm Tinted Mineral Moisturizer SPF 20 in Nyans #0. It offers sun protection and is lightweight, but also has the longevity that every bride needs. Of course, a concealer is essential on areas that may need more attention and to brighten under the eye. Here I used CARGO OneBase in #02.

CHEEKS Shimmer highlight powders are all the rage right now, and brides are using them to achieve that summertime glow. Here, I used CARGO Blush in Louisiana and applied it high along her cheek bones. This shade offers a beautiful highlight and also offers a gorgeous, more concentrated sweep of pink blush on the apples of the cheeks.

EYES A neutral, “smokey” eye is a very popular bridal request. I used three products here, along with a pair of soft lashes. Lise Watier in Beige Glace creates a soft base, and Smashbox Eyeshadow Trio in Focal Point provided a great accent and liner. FACE Stockholm Brow Shadow in Myrrah was used in her brows, as well as on her eyes as bottom liner and a contour to pull the look all together.

LIPS A lot of brides don't want the maintenance of a bold lip, but the colour palette for the shoot was soft and subtle so I chose a red lipstick to add that extra flavour. I used FACE Stockholm Lipstick in Look Matte. This natural bridal look would also be beautiful with a nude or light pink lip.

HAIR SPOTLIGHT HOW TO CREATE SOFT BOMBSHELL WAVES As owner, lead hair stylist, and lead makeup artist at F.A.C.E. Makeup System, Feana is a popular lady. She let us know her tips and tricks for creating the soft bombshell waves, a popular last-all-night wedding hairstyle. Hair and Text by Feana, F.A.C.E. Makeup System Makeup by 2 Chicks & a Bag of Makeup Photos by Brittany Mahood Photography Model Swish Model Management

PREP This look is more of a wave than a curl, so we needed to find that happy medium without straying into Shirley Temple territory. To prep her hair, we used Redken Hot Sets 22 Thermal Setting Mist, spraying it throughout, so that her hair would hold the wave as we loosened the curls into waves.

CURL Because the model has thick and wavy hair, we used a big barrel curling iron to curl each piece in the same direction. Hair that already has texture in it should hold the curl long into the evening. If your hair is thin and straight, use a tighter curling iron. At the beginning it will be more of a curl than a wave, but it will relax throughout the day.

HOLD Once a piece of hair has been curled, release it from the curling iron and hold it in place with your hand. Wait a few moments for it to cool down, and then brush it out with a brush or your fingers. We set the model’s curl with Redken Quick Dry 18 Instant Finishing Spray.

FINISH Brush through the hair with your fingers to loosen the curl into a wave. To give the hair a nice, natural shine, we used Redken Shine Flash 02 Glistening Mist, which has a much more even effect than a serum. Now you’re ready to dance and shake it all night long!

your wide eyed groom, you will look like yourself... but better. The perfect wedding hair tip toes the line between the everyday and a hot red carpet coiffure, and never looks forced. The choice partly comes down to logistics, like what kind of affair you’re hosting and exactly how ornate your gown is, but the decision often comes down to one simple question: What makes you look your best?

Look N .o1

PIN CURLS A 2 inch curling iron will do the trick. Make a far side part, tucking the shallow side behind your ear. On that side, curl large sections of hair towards your face. Wrap the curl around a bobby pin to set the shape as it cools. On the deeply parted side, create a loose finger wave with a curling iron.

Look N .o2

LOW PONY To start, part your hair on the opposite side to create more volume. After curling your hair, put it in a low pony, leaving out the front section. Twist the front pieces over top of the ponytail elastic and bobby pin them in place, pulling out a few small, select pieces to make it look easy and natural.

WILD BRAID This look is kind of like a French braid, and requires dexterous fingers. Start at the top corner of your head and, instead of braiding in three sections, only use two. Tie the two pieces of hair into knot after knot, pulling them tight and grabbing more hair as you go. When you’re finished, loosen the knots with your fingers.

Look N .o4

SIMPLE CHIGNON Create three sections of hair running back: hairline, crown, and neck. Make a messy bun with the neck section. Then, part the crown section down the middle and braid both sides to the bun, twisting the ends around the bun and pinning. Back comb the top section and pin it above the bun, twisting the ends into the bun.

HOW TO CREATE AN ELEGANT FRENCH TWIST

1 | Curl the hair and spray with light hairspray. 2 | Backcomb the hair at the root of your crown. 3 | Leaving out 2 front sections, create a low, messy bun. 4 | Twist the 2 front sections into the bun and pin.

ASK THE EXPERT YOUR WEDDING CEREMONY The vows you say to one another on your wedding day are, in fact, the most important part of that day. Our resident ceremonies expert Sheryl Hunnie has the scoop on vows, ceremony scripts, legal red tape, and all that comes before and after. Text by Sheryl Hunnie Photos by Cheryl Struss Photography

necessary for you each to say the same vows—in fact, often the most heartfelt ceremonies are those where each of you can express your feelings in the way that best suits your personality.

There are some elements that have to be part of your ceremony in accordance with the Marriage Act of Manitoba. Your civil ceremony is a legal exercise and the letter of the law must be followed, so make sure that your Marriage Commissioner includes the Declaration of Intent and the statement of vows as outlined in the Act. Once the legal requirements have been met, there is plenty of room for creativity.

Readings and Context In order to make certain that your ceremony reflects who you are, you may want to consider the readings that are offered throughout the service. Countless words have been written on love and marriage and you can draw from a myriad of sources. Poets, prophets, and philosophers have waxed eloquent on love, and having friends or family share readings during the ceremony helps to create a context of community. Your readings may invoke a sense of spirituality or simply confirm your feelings and beliefs about what marriage means to you.

EXPERT ADVICE

Unity Symbols Many couples also choose to incorporate elements from their cultures into their ceremonies. These symbolic rituals can add depth of meaning for families as traditional elements combined with modern sensibilities work together to create a fresh beginning for the newlyweds. The plethora of wedding shows on television has brought a number these elements to a new audience. Whereas in recent years unity candles were status quo, handfastings, ring warmings, and sand ceremonies are becoming increasingly popular.

Music Sets the Tone Do not underestimate music as an essential element in your wedding ceremony. Traditional selections such as Pachelbel’s Canon in D are lovely, but feel free to consider other music as well. However beautiful the tune of your favourite song, be sure the lyrics are in keeping with the spirit of the day, even if you are using an instrumental version. Processional music tends to be more formal in nature, with the recessional music often being a little more whimsical.

Your Unique Ceremony If all of this seems a little daunting, remember that some Marriage Commissioners are happy to help you create the perfect ceremony for your special day. For example, I have a wide range of readings and vows that I have compiled from a variety of sources and can facilitate the selection of these so that your wedding ceremony is a unique reflection of the love you share.

EXPERT ADVICE

5. REMEMBER: EVERY PHASE IS JUST A PHASE

Sometimes life doesn't always turn out the way we expect it to. Parenthood, challenges with work, and family crises can sometimes pop up unexpectedly. Take a deep breath in, focus on gratitude, and remember that you are in a phase of life that will change. You can't always control your circumstances, but you can control your reaction to it. When we lost everything in a fire, our family pulled together, and we found we were happier living with less. Turn the negative into something positive. Relationships are what matter most in life. Everything else is secondary. Keep your eye on the bigger picture, and enjoy the journey!
