Mreceptions!

GUIDE WITH A LOOK AT

When it comes down to it, the selection of your reception venue is one of the most critical decisions you will make for your wedding. The venue’s availability will influence your wedding date, the room will determine how large your guest list can be, what your décor should look like, and how much of your budget will be spent on the party, the chef will impact your menu planning, and so on. Selecting the right venue for your wedding is a big decision. So with that in mind, we’ve done our best to create this guide in a way that will help you make those tough decisions, with photo galleries, expert advice, and tips on budgeting.

Happy Planning!

NOW WHAT? HOW TO CHOOSE THE PERFECT VENUE FOR YOU UNLESS YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHERE YOU WANT TO HOST YOUR RECEPTION BEFORE YOU GET ENGAGED, CHANCES ARE THAT YOU’RE GOING TO BE TOURING A FEW DIFFERENT SPOTS AND CHECKING OUT ALL YOUR

Moptions.

P H OT O BY Josh Dookhie Photography T E X T BY Lauren Wiebe

I F YO U ’ R E L I K E M O S T C O U P L E S ,

you’ll likely find that you can weed

out a few options right away—maybe the menu doesn’t appeal to you, the space doesn’t suit your needs, or you don’t click with the banquet manager. But what will you be left with? A few great choices, and one confused bride who doesn’t know how to pick. We asked our local experts to weigh in, and give you their top tips for selecting the perfect venue for you!

ANITA WONG TERRACE IN THE PARK "Every bride and every wedding is different, and personalizing the venue in regard to décor will be one of the things that will make a reception stand out, but it should go beyond just the way your reception looks. Offering your guests a good variety of food options should be another thing at the top of your reception venue must-have checklist. We also encourage every bride to keep in mind that just because someone has done something for their own wedding, doesn’t mean it’s right for everyone else. Sometimes keeping things simple is the best way to go, and selecting a venue that provides the utmost quality in service and food will make any wedding memorable."

LAURA WIEBE THE FORT GARRY HOTEL "There are a few things that are often overlooked when couples tour reception spaces, such as cleanliness. It’s important that a couple looks for cleanliness of the desired reception venue, both in the venue room and around the common space. Checking for a clean, well lit, well maintained and visually appealing space will be of great assistance when putting the finishing touches on a reception—there’s no point in spending all your money on table centrepieces if the cutlery is dirty, and your guests will definitely notice."

EXPERTADVICE

CRYSTAL MEYERS BEL ACRES GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB "When it comes down to the reception, you and your guests will be spending about 6 to 8 hours at the venue. I believe the space should reflect your personal selves in some way or another. Whether that comes down to really connecting with the banquet manager looking after your day, the outdoor area your guests can enjoy, or something simple like the windows in the ballroom, I think it is important to have a place you love and is a true reflection of the two of you!" SAVE THE DATE

It would seem that the couple who fishes together, stays together. At least that’s the case for Brittany and Tim. Tim surprised her with a new fishing rod while the couple was vacationing at the lake, and since it was already cast out, he asked her to reel it in. At the end of the line she found a mason jar with a note in it. Pulling it out, Brittany quickly realized that Tim was proposing to her. The note said, “Will you marry me?” When she turned around to say “Yes,” she found Tim bent on one knee, holding out the perfect ring. O C T O B E R 201 3 | I T S LO V E

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST MISTAKE A BRIDE CAN MAKE WITH HER DECORATIONS? A lot of brides will go with what is current for wedding trends, and in doing so, neglect their personal style. TYLER MAUWS FOOD AND BEVERAGE MANAGER BRIDGES GOLF COURSE

WHAT IS THE ROLE OF THE BANQUET MANAGER? In a nutshell, the role of the banquet manager is to coordinate the planning, set-up, execution, and timeline of the big day in how it relates to the venue. I arrange the meal tasting and work on a menu plan with the couple around 6 months in advance of the wedding. Following the meal plan, we coordinate décor options (in-house options versus out-sourced decorators) and make a timeline plan for set-up and takedown depending on the venue's availability. On the actual day, I will work with the couple's itinerary to ensure their food and beverage requirements are met on schedule (or earlier/later than planned). Staffing, food/beverage requests, and ceremony details are also the responsibility of the banquet manager (sound requirements, chair set-up, back-up details in case of bad weather), and the banquet manager should also be on the floor during the meal service to direct staff

accommodate

and ensure any special dietary requirements are accommodated.

WHAT CAN A VENUE DO TO A WEDDING WITH LOTS OF YOUNG CHILDREN?

Having a lot of children at a wedding can make for some tricky logistics, which can be accommodated in a number of ways. At Bridges, we have a private loft room which can be used a kid's sanctuary, where we provide them with kids friendly meals while keeping them entertained with board games, movies, and video games. We do recommend that the couple be responsible to bring in certain items, including a babysitter of some kind. If you prefer to keep the kids in sight but somewhat out of mind, we’ve worked with the couple to set up tables in the banquet room for kids only, complete with colouring books, toys, and so on at their place settings. Another thing we always recommend is making sure the kids are fed first as we begin the dinner service for the adults—kids just can’t wait as long and the last thing you want is a room full of whiny voices! THE BUDGET

P H OT O BY luckygirl photography T E X T BY Lauren Wiebe

BUDGET PLANNING: HOW TO BUDGET FOR YOUR RECEPTION MOST COUPLES WILL SPEND UP TO 50% OF THEIR WEDDING BUDGET ON THEIR RECEPTION. YOU KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS, RIGHT? IT MEANS THAT WHEN IT COMES TO PREPARING YOUR BUDGET, YOU’LL HAVE PLENTY OF OPPORTUNITIES TO SPEND OR SAVE YOUR MOOLAH. DECIDING HOW TO BEST DO THAT CAN BE

challenging.

B E F O R E YO U S TA RT LO O K I N G AT V E N U E S ,

put together your must-

have list. This should include enough space to accommodate your estimated guest list, what area of town you want to host the wedding in, specific menu selections (specifically for ethnic foods), whether you want the ceremony and reception in the same space, accessibility to parking, and so on. Depending on when you are planning your wedding, it is best to keep an open mind when it comes to wedding dates. Many venues book up 12-24 months in advance, so you may need to sacrifice a specific date in order to get the venue you want.

It’s important to know what is included in most reception

packages. While you are touring different venues and meeting with banquet coordinators, be sure to get a complete listing of their packages, menus, and pricing, and ask plenty of questions. This is the only way you will learn whether a venue is the right one for you, and of course, whether or not you can afford to host the type of reception you want to.

HOW TO SAVE ON RECEPTION COSTS Everyone knows that receptions are expensive, and no one will fault you for wanting to save a little coin here and there. One of the best ways to reduce costs is at your bar. Anita Wong, Assistant General Manager at Terrace in the Park, suggests getting creative with when your bar is open: “Reduce the length of time your bar is open, such as during cocktail hour and after dinner.” This will allow your guests to feel they are drinking freely, while minimizing costs as well as foot traffic during the dinner hour. Laura Wiebe, Marketing Director for The Fort Garry Hotel. Not every reception venue is created equally, and some items will be standard at one venue but an add-on at another location. For example, not all venues have dance floors, projectors and screens, a podium, or a sound system—and finding or paying for these items is certainly not what you want to do at your rehearsal dinner! At the same time, not taking advantage of items that are included in your venue’s package can be the same as throwing money out the window. It may

from Vancouver wasn’t the easiest, but with a few plane tickets and plenty of email and phone conversations with her vendors, Kate made it work—and managed to find the time to DIY many of the décor elements of the wedding, tying in touches of Tiffany blue and silver throughout. EXPERTADVICE TAKE PHOTOS There are lots of great ideas and designs at wedding shows—all the vendors are going out of their way to show off their style and impress you. This makes the show the perfect opportunity to get inspired, and find great ideas and vendors to connect with! If you see something that you would love for your wedding day, take photos and make a note which vendor created it. Later, bring these images to your consultations with florists, linen and décor companies, and stationery designers to make sure everyone is envisioning the same concepts.

BRING A BUDDY To help make decisions and avoid getting overwhelmed, bring someone along to the show whose opinions you value but won’t be pushy, like your fiancé, mother, future mother-in-law, bridesmaid, sibling, or friend! To avoid getting overwhelmed choose carefully who you bring—the more people, the more opinions.

SKIP THE BOOTHS YOU’RE NOT INTERESTED IN With plenty of different vendor categories displaying their product, there may be vendors that you may have already booked. There is no need to go visit their competition if you are satisfied with who you have hired. There will also be vendors for items you have decided not to go with. Don’t second guess the choices you have already made—you probably had a good reason in the first place.

CHEF SIMON RESCH T E R R A C E I N T H E PA R K

Chef Simon Resch’s dishes are the perfect mix of Quebecois flavour and British Columbia environmental concern, with a healthy dose of prairie comfort. Born and raised in Winnipeg, Simon trained at the Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts on Granville Island in Vancouver, where he was first introduced to the Ocean Wise Program. “This is a wonderful program dedicated to helping restaurants make ocean-friendly buying decisions. Terrace isn’t an Ocean Wise participant yet, but we will be soon,” says Simon. After sharpening his talents in kitchens all across Vancouver, Montreal, and even Mediterranean France, Simon moved back to Winnipeg and took the position as Executive Chef at Terrace in the Park. “Terrace is an unforgettable venue, and we serve some of the most contemporary food in town. When a couple sits down and creates a reception menu as iconic as the building itself, then I’m a happy man,” says Simon.

IF A GUY YOUR FIRST DATE BECAUSE HE JUST CAN’T WAIT TO GO OUT WITH YOU, IT’S PROBABLY A SURE SIGN YOU’LL END UP MARRIED—AND THAT’S JUST HOW MICHAEL AND MEGHAN’S BEGAN.

love story

F R O M L E F T Meghan's textured bouquet included garden roses, spray roses, Star of Bethlehem, cymbidium orchids, silver brunia, scabiosa pods, and succulents;

low profile boutonnieres coordinated with the bouquets using pink spray roses; the beautiful couple posed for pictures throughout the Fort Garry Hotel.

O N T H E I R F O U R Y E A R A N N I V E R S A RY, Michael proposed to Meghan while walking through a garden in Las Vegas.

For their fifth anniversary, they planned another walk—down the aisle. The couple’s wedding day incorporated both of their personalities and a blend of antique and modern details. After a first look with the bride in Vera Wang, the couple was wed in a traditional Catholic ceremony, followed by an elegant reception at the Fort Garry Hotel. Lush hydrangeas and pink roses were held by the bridal party and placed at the center of each table, a chocolate Hershey’s Kiss at each place setting represented the donation made to CancerCare in lieu of favours, and antique frames held the tables numbers made from scrapbook paper. The evening carried on as planned and finished with a late night snack of cupcakes and a choreographed dance by the wedding couple to “Hold On” by Michael Buble.

REAL WINNIPEG WEDDING

THE COUPLE STARTED WITH THE PLAN TO KEEP THEIR GUEST LIST VERY INTIMATE: “We realized that just because you see people, doesn’t mean they actually KNOW you. We chose to celebrate with people who have shown us the most support.” Thought it was a difficult decision, it made following through on the details quite simple. They selected a small church (that has been redeveloped into a close friend’s home) to host both the outdoor ceremony and the reception, planned a short candlelit ceremony with a cappella singers, and created mismatched centrepieces using white roses, baby’s breath, candles, and birdcages. An elaborate buffet of homemade baking served with cold milk came after dinner, the perfect way to end the romantic evening on a sweet note.
